  • In lieu of Counting Sheep

Johnsonville’s pre-blast instructions re construction in process at CM helped guide some of the PAX to the correct alter AO this morning near the gridiron at Godwin HS. For Chum and Krue, their savvy served them well. It was a beautiful morning for the following:

SSHs, arm circles, and slow low squats

    The 300:

X25 APDs, X25 KB Right Snatches, X25 Merkins, X25 KB Left Snatches, X25 APDs, X25 KB American Swings, X25 Merkins, X25 KB American Swings, X25 APDs, X25 KB Right Presses, X25 Merkins, and X25 KB Left Presses

    The 200:

X25 APDs, X25 KB Pullovers, X25 APDs, X25 KB Tricep Presses, X25 APDs
X25 KB Pullovers, X25 APDs, and X25 KB Tricep Presses

    The 100:

X25 KB High Pulls, X25 KB Squats, X25 KB High Pulls, and X25 KB Squats

Hoops’ pick: X10 KB Merkins each side
Cletus’ pick: X15 KB Bent Over Rows each side
Krue’s pick: X5 KB Bottom Half TGUs each side
    White Deer’s pick: Boat/Canoe
    Chum’s pick: X15 KB Figure 8s/RTWs

Mosey KB Carries – right hand suitcase, right hand waiter, left hand suitcase, and left hand waiter

KB tracers – racked kaorokes and fwd/rvs triceps extensions

COT: Numberama and Namearama; Announcements re D’Ville Frisbee/COTU gathering and Toga sendoff; prayers for Cheech’s family, J’ville’s friend and his family, WD’s father, travel mercies, and unspoken.

Moleskin: Cletus and Hoops ganged up on WD the moment the three left the car this morning – Attila would have been pleased had he posted. J’ville’s text informing of sleep malfunction sufficed as YHC’s wake up alert. Touting the proven health benefits of somnambulism was not effective to prompt a J’Ville posting. There being no willing VQ candidates, YHC took the Q on the fly and kept it fast and simple. Chum and Krue – with their heavier KBs – impressed by hitting the called reps.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
    Psalm 19:1 (NIV)

  • Ludus West End

Six Gladiators broke the bondage of sound sleep, drove through driving rain, and posted to seek the rewards of Circus Maximus. YHC served as this week’s lanista and we trained as follows:

    Thang:

X10 SSHs; X5 Forward Arm Circles; X5 Backward Arm Circles; X5 R Curtsy Lunges; and X5 L Curtsy Lunges

    1st Quarter – 10 Minute EMOM
Odd Minutes: X8 R KB Lunge Curl & Press
Even Minutes: X20 L KB Swings

    2nd Quarter – 10 Minute EMOM
Odd Minutes: X8 L KB Lunge Curl & Press
Even Minutes: X20 R KB Swings

    3rd Quarter – 10 Minute EMOM
Odd Minutes: X12 R KB Snatch
Even Minutes: X12 KB High Pull

    4th Quarter – 10 Minute EMOM*
Odd Minutes: X12 L KB Snatch
Even Minutes: X20 KB Pull Overs

COT (inadvertently undertaken in reverse order):

    YHC closed us with prayer

Announcements: Convergence at 0630 on Monday at Belle Island (Park at Tredegar)

    Counterama and Namearama

    Moleskin:

Proper execution of the LCPs was elusive – with some more reps we’ll master this compound movement that promises to pair nicely with TGUs.

*We fell short on 24 L KB Snatches today – homework for the amusement of your neighbors.

Unspoken were the thoughts that EMOMs are the stock and trade of the unimaginative Q – mea culpa.

Great to have Kru out for his sophomore showing at the CM – even brought two KBs. Those Gloucester boys are strong.

Speculation was rampant concerning WhiteDeer’s impressive punch at the top of each snatch: was he one of those kids constantly raising his hand in class to the annoyance of his less eager classmates? Johnsonville’s conversion to a heavier KB is a success based on his strong efforts today. FlipPhone ripped through the EMOMs begging the question: does he need a heavier KB? ChumBucket stepped out from the protection of the bus lane cover and commanded the rain to stop – and it did, with the rain yielding to a dry and pleasant morning.

Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

COT: Numberama and Counterama and Takeout Prayer by Cecil. Refreshment (fellowship) at Einsteins.

MoleSkin: No blood, but plenty of sweat was deposited at the Grassy Noll.

Somehow the PLTs seem easier with a Portuguese count – thanks to DarkHorse who the PAX welcomed back from his home by the Fountain of Youth. He arrived in RVA at nearly midnight but scoffed at Cecil’s offer to sleep in. Now having no choice but to post, Cecil celebrated being on the cusp of GrandFatherhood by behaving beastly on the Four Corners. Blessings to and TClaps for DarkHorse, MDarkHorse, Cecil, MCecil and Sully.

The other guys – each with his unique KB panache – pushed through a second KB workout in 49 hours. FlipPhone, in particular, threw weight around this morning with laudable efficiency – strong work. MumbleChatter quickly yielded to the quiet of heaving breathing punctuated by the all too familiar cacophony of disturbing emissions from WhiteDeer and Attila. Johnsonville was very quiet – angry, hurt/injured, both?

Following his strong VQ at Circus Maximus, ChumBucket informed the PAX that he would be absent from the GridIron; not so NightCrawler to whom WhiteDeer and Johnsonville called via FaceTime to learn that NightCrawler and MNighCrawler were driving north on I95 for a day at the Preakness. Not properly attired for Burpees at the Rest Area, NightCrawler promised to perform The Black-Eyed Susan curl AMRAP at Pimlico, and MNightCrawler wisely agreed to be the SouthBound DesiginatedDriver.

Two of YHC’s nephews were commissioned as 2LTs over the last two weeks, the most recent yesterday at UVA. Both ceremonies were joyous and sobering. Welcome are prayers that my nephews will be blessed with the spirit of courage, strength, and determination. And, of course, please pray for God’s watch care over all the young men and women heeding their call to duty in our Armed Forces.

Matthew 14:27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”.

COT: Numberama and Counterama and Takeout Prayer by YHC expressing gratitude for the blessings we enjoy. Einstein’s for 50% of the PAX.

MoleSkin: He who is named for a melanin pigment deficient ruminant mammal believes he is entitled to know the number of reps before the 8-count exercises – not sure that info was either well-received or faithfully executed by the PAX for reasons ranging from injury to stiffness. In any event, the PAX ruled that the chronic requests for this intel showed poor form. On a lighter note, participation ribbons were earned by all on the KB toss. Frankly, the competition was even less impressive than the thud of the KBs landing at the end of their (short) flight in the soft ground off the Grassy Noll. Thankfully, the PAX persuaded J’Ville to keep his tight shorts on under his kilt for the remainder of the workout. FlipPhone regaled the PAX with his command of US History, this time extolling Marquis de Lafayette’s contribution to the Continental Army – good stuff. Some discussion concerning a once monthly diversion post-GridIron to Metro Diner – J’Ville raved about the impressive Gluton-free menu (offerings in number to implicate the “Paradox of Choice”). Attila was away which means per WhiteDeer that he will be well-rested for his Q at GridIron next week.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

  • Rising Up

The PAX (#17) celebrated Easter with their 2.0s (#26) and Ms (#7) by gathering at the GridIron for a Scripture-inspired treasure hunt and workout. A beautiful morning — sunny and about 60 degrees — greeted the PAX and their families. After circling up around the ShovelFlag, a disclaimer was made and a brief introduction provided concerning the ten stations comprising the the morning’s celebration. J’Ville served as the Sphinx by offering the clues and leading the workout.

Quick warmup with SSHs, Merkins, etc. IC

Clue #1: Easter is about hope and rebirth, a stash can be found where touchdowns have worth.

Mosey to Station #1 – the WildCat Football Field
CrabWalk sideline to sideline (or as far as you can go)

John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

Clue #2: Before his arrest, Jesus ate with his friends, the next stash is hidden where the running track bends.

Mosey to Station #2 – the Track
    Run 1X the Track

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Clue #3: Jesus was betrayed for a mere 30 bucks, the next stash of eggs is where teachers park trucks.

Mosey to Station #3 – Middle School Parking Lot area
Touch ten different trees, return and do 25X sit-ups OYO.

Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Clue #4: They made Jesus wear a thorny crown that was sharp and cruel, the next place to look is an old, one-roomed school.

Mosey to Station #4 – the One Room School
Triple check with wall sits, push-ups, and bunny hops around school (X2).

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Clue #5: Although Pilate was not able to find any guilt, he bent to demands of a mob’s ugly will. You can find the next stash of treats on a nearby grassy hill.

Mosey to Station #5 – the Grassy Noll
    10X Burpees OYO

Mark 8:35-36 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?

Clue #6: Jesus was beaten and sentenced to die, a nearby small hut is where colored eggs lie.

Mosey to Station #6 – Mosey to Pavilion
    20X Squats IC

Matthew 16:15-16 “But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Clue #7: They nailed him to a cross, and there he did die, go look in the sand, for a stash there does lie.

Mosey to Station #7 – the Sand Volleyball Courts
BearCrawl from end to end and sideways one leg hops end to end

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Clue #8: His body was set in a tomb sealed tight with rock, another stash is placed near the bridge on the walk.

Mosey to Station #8 – the Bridge
    25X PLTs

Luke 23:46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Clue #9: After three days, the tomb was found bare, search the playground nearby with the utmost of care.

Mosey to Station #9 – the Playground
    20X Mountain Climbers OYO

Mark 16:4-6 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.”

Clue #10: Jesus rose from the dead, a miracle many say, the flag marks the very last stash of the day.

Mosey to Station #10 – shallow CF at the Diamond
    25X Hillbilllies IC

Luke 24:36-40 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts
rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.

    COT:

Numberama and Namearama in giant circle in shallow CF at Diamond

    Mosey to the ShovelFlag:

Breaking Bread: MEarthWorm provided Resurrection Buns symbolizing the empty tomb and the promise of eternal life.

Closing Prayer by Attila offering gratitude for the resurrection of Christ and the promise of life eternal.

Einstein’s for many for some excellent fellowship.

Moleskin: A nice gathering of PAX and family, marking a dark day but anticipating the glory of the Easter morning that follows. Special Easter Blessings to our wives and 2.0s!

  • UnderWeight

Three of the PAX ripped open their spinach cans and gulped down the contents for an ambulatory KB workout, heavy emphasis on the arms below the elbows.

    Thang:

x25 SSHs IC and x10 8-Count BBs Pan Pax IC

2 Mile Circuit of KB Carries between 25 and 55 lbs. (mobile transition handoffs encouraged and necessary) and with multiple x10 L and R KB Presses and L and R KB Curls in motion and interspersed with, among other things, the following respites:

x25 IWs IC, x10 8-Count BBs Pan Pax IC, x25 DQs IC, x10 8-Count BBs Pan Pax IC, x50 KB Pullovers IC, x25 Small Fwrd Arm Circles IC, x25 APDs IC, x10 8-Count BBs Pan Pax IC, x50 KB Pullovers IC, x25 Seal Jacks IC, x12 KB R Snatches OYO, x12 KB L Snatches OYO, x10 APDs IC, x5 APD L Extended IC, x5 APDs R Extended IC, and x10 APDs IC.

COT: Numberama and Namearama and Prayer of gratitude and supplication at Einstein’s.

Moleskin: We missed some of our regulars but WhiteDeer was determined not to spare the absentees from his good-natured disparagement. To be fair though, flames were fueled the evening before when WD apparently endured the derision of Mrs. J’Ville during a chance encounter at a local south side dining establishment. Being far more articulate (and acerbic) than her lesser half, Mrs. J’Ville succeeded where J’Ville has repeatedly failed – she left WD feeling less like a 12 point buck and more like an albino field mouse. J’Ville, NightCrawler, Cecil, Attila, and FlipPhone would be pleased to know that WD’s 8-Count BBs resembled convulsions defying medical explanation. On the other hand, CB posted with his usual quiet and efficient strength and fluidity, and brought his customary thoughtful observations to the fine dining we enjoyed at Einstein’s. Our numbers were modest, but the fellowship suffered not – thanks men!

    Stand Firm!

  • A Mélange @ GridIron

A foggy morning greeted five of the GridIron Faithful who brought their KBs to the AO for a Three Period contest that went something like the following under a Tri-Q:

    Thang:

    First Period (EW) —

Three sets of 2-hand KB Swings, right-hand cleans, left-hand cleans, right-hand snatches, and left-hand snatches (40 secs/20 secs off).

Eight sets of Curb KB Pullovers (Tabata 20 secs on/10 secs off).

    Second Period (WD) —

Three sets of Dips, KB Goblet Squats, Merkins, and LBCs (alt. APDs) (40 secs on/20 secs off).

    Pole Smokers and other

    Third Period (Attila) —

Split into two teams – alternating KB Farmers’ Carries and LBCs, Crab Cakes, APDs, and IWs.

Four Corners – run and karaoke medley with Merkins, APDs, Monkey-Humpers, and LBCs.

    Sudden Death —

    x25 Curb KB Pullovers IC

    COT:

Numbers & Names; announcements; division of duties: another Tri-Q next week with NightCrawler taking a Third for his VQ as a F3RVA RedWood. Closing Prayer by YHC – supplication for guidance, discernment, and wisdom.

    Moleskin:

Glad to have NightCrawler back in the fold – the FlyOver during COT impeached NC’s claim to have taken down all lawful fowl in the Old Dominion. In the Curb KB Pullovers NC found relief for his Buttstock-induced upper body pain. He dedicated himself to selling F3 as a tonic for other Elmer J. Fudds.

FlipPhone spoke what every KBer has asked at least once – exactly how does one avoid the KB wrist smack – consensus among the PAX: avoid the death grip. We’ll miss you next week while you’re away camping – hope you select better camping weekends than J’ville who seems partial to extreme cold, winds, and fire.

WD and Attila, as per the norm, verbally jousted for 60 minutes for the hearing pleasure of the GridIron audience. Attila thought he had the last word but WD finished strong – real STRONG.

Terrific workout this morning – thanks to all!

    Solid 2F at Enstein’s.

Then sings my soul, My Savior, God, to Thee, How great thou art, How great thou art!

  • Light

Three of the Faithful rolled into the Godwin parking lot early and eager for the Drum Beat of the CM. The Gloom was a forced imagination; the sky was brilliantly illuminated with the Luna Plena and the air comfortably crisp.

After a jaunt around the school via the Appian Way the Pax engaged in a quick warmup of DQs, IWs, and SSHs followed by a Kettle Bell version of:

COT: Windmills, Squat and High Pulls, Goblet Squats, Goblet Alternating Leg Lunges, 2-hand Swings, R Rack and Presses, L Rack and Presses, Goblet alternating side Presses, R Snatches, L Snatches, Halos, Pull-overs and Presses, Alternating Single Leg V Ups, and APDs, all IC with a few exceptions. Rinse and repeat in reverse order. Four Minutes of Atlas consisting of Tricep Presses Tibata style.

    Counterama and Namerama

Announcements: 2.0 Friendly GridIron on December 24 – J’Ville has the Q; Attila has the Q for this Saturday’s edition of GridIron.

Take out prayer by YHC – the Great Gift.

Moleskin: Blocking and Tackling day at CM this morning – most moves performed at a deliberate pace to strengthen form. Surprising amount of fatigue, especially following the Atlas.

And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

    John 1:5 (NKJV)

  • Stretching the AO

Two became three Pax when NightCrawler used his best recon skills and joined Attila and YHC to push the AO boundaries on a run well outside the GridIron turf. It was a beautiful and crisp morning but the coldness quickly disappeared during the course of the following:

X25 SSHs, X25 IWs, and X10 Merkins all in 4-ct cadence.

    Thang:

Admittedly, what YHC calls a run the Pax would call a mosey. In any event, the run/mosey took the Pax from the Pouncy Tract parking lot to the front of the school, to the back of the school and down past the newly-surfaced Battery, onto the heretofore undiscovered foot/bike path and through the tunnel under Twin Hickory Lake Drive. The Pax turned around and headed back with stops that included a couple hundred Merkins IC, a hundred APDs IC, fifty reverse partnerless leg tosses IC, a hundred Dips OYO, twenty-five fence press ups, a smattering of wall seats for time, fifty step ups OYO, fifty shoulder-elevated single leg/hip thrusts OYO, and fifty shoulder-grounded single leg/hip thrusts OYO. Back at the parking lot we concluded with three minutes of Mary of Hello Dollies, Rosalitas, and Dead Bugs. We covered a couple miles of ground all told.

    COT:

Counterama and Namerama – nice 30/40/50 mix

    Announcements

    – 3rd F push in Hanover reported by YHC. Thursday at the Rise & Shine at 0630: super solid group of HIMs ready to tackle all subjects in quest for spiritual growth and discernment; and

    – J’ville away this morning at his second posting of six week launch of F3 Hampton Roads; T-Claps for his terrific leadership in organizing the support for DreamLiner and the F3 HR Pax. T-Claps also to all the F3 RVA Pax who Qed and/or posted at Mt. Trashmore these last six weeks. Nicely done.

Closing communal prayer – thanksgiving, gratitude, and supplication.

    Moleskin:

After a brief warmup Attila observed “it looks like we’re it” so we set out to bust the AO limits. A determined NightCrawler eyeballed us from afar just as we were about to hit the woods and we were grateful to have him join us. Attila seemed to enjoy the run/mosey, kindly retreating a couple times to keep the Pax together on the return trip.

Very little MumbleChatter this morning, largely attributable to the unanticipated absence of the garrulous WhiteDeer.

As usual, a very fine conversation and 2nd F at Coffeeteria.

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.

    Isaiah 9:2 (NKJV)

  • Sharpening the Sword

Five men gathered in the Gloom for a 0645 PreGame under Cecil that illuminated an otherwise overcast morning. Having added the Sword of God’s Word to our spiritual armor, the Pax re-grouped in the Pouncey Tract parking lot eager to boost their physical condition, loosely (very, and unordered) as follows:

    Thang:

    X25 SSHs
X10 Eight-County Body Builders Pan Pax
    X25 DQs
    X25 APDs

    Dips and KB Pullovers Tabata-style
    Pressups and KB Halos Tabata-style
Merkins/CDDs and KB Standing Rows Tabata-style
    X25 CDDs

    Sideline to Sideline Kettlebell medley:

    – KB carries (single, double, and triple), including suitcase, rack, waiter, and 360s
    – Karaokes, shuffles, backwards, high skips, bounds, lunges, crab walks, bear crawls, combat crawls, sprints, etc., with mid-route flavorings of merkins, burpees, forward rolls, etc.
    – Planks

    COT:

    Counterama and Namerama

Announcements – 3rd F Armor of God PreGame next week — Power of Prayer (part 8 of 8) — Attila double-dipper Q for 0645 PreGame and 0700 GridIron.

Thanksgiving spoken and gratitude expressed; concerns shared.

Closing prayer by YHC – X365 Thanksgiving, travel blessings, medical procedures, and Matt’s family

    Moleskin:

Some GridIroners were traveling and a couple more regulars are on injured reserved. All were missed.

Virgin posting of Cecil’s son-in-law visiting for Thanksgiving. No surprise that the former college varsity tennis player and soccer player – 26 years the junior of the youngest posting Pax – smoothly executed this morning’s offerings. The material for the naming was ever so rich, but alas the Pax settled on one of many fitting nom de guerres. A warm welcome to DarkHorse – we look forward to your next visit north.

Cecil’s suggestion of adding forward rolls to the Sideline to Sideline KB Medley was not appreciated, at least not by YHC who now counts vertigo among his burgeoning maladies. ChumBucket’s inclusion of Burpees in same appears to have achieved more widespread grievance. Credit to Johnsonville for not seeking refuge in GridIron’s 5-Star facilities and, instead, pushing the pace.

In sum, a good morning begun with solid 3rd F (query: how does God’s Word shape you and how are you edified by it?) and capped with a fine 2nd F Coffeeteria.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

    Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
