  • Battle of Long Island and a little Merlot

14 men, including three FNGs answered the call to report for duty on Satan’s Hill for a Battle of Long Island themed workout. YHC was shocked at the record breaking turnout and determined to give he PAX their money’s worth.

Warmup with discussion of the Battle; some frustration was displayed by the PAX, but historical context was important.

SSH, Helicopters, cherry pickers, ‘murcans, LBCs

Mosey to the top of the hill then 4 corners with 20 each stop ‘murcans, LBCs, CDDs and squats.

down the hill with further discussion of God’s intervention 245 years ago to preserve the fledgling, trapped American Army after the retreat to Brooklyn Heights. In honor of the Maryland 400 holding the line and allowing the others to retreat we did a bear crawl style Indian Run to the top of SH. The mumble chatter among the PAX was getting ugly and a new revolution was in the offing as the PAX took a break with lunges after an FNG spilled merlot on the hill.

After a return to the bottom, in commemoration of the evacuation of the troops across the East River we ran to the top of SH a few more times before heading to the rock pile. We did reps of 8 overhead, curls for the girls, skullcrushers and squats repeato until the PAX begged for more running, so up the hill one last time we went. Finished with a Ring of Fire and time was called.

Numberama -14 Namorama – Three FNGs got some good names.

Prayers for our Marines killed in Afghanistan, Nancy’s friend with COVID, and Dracula’s daughter’s knee surgery.

  • Turning Point

9 alert men turned out in the morning gloom and moist air on the 79th anniversary of one of the landmark battles in American history, the battle of Midway. In the midst of the exercise there was an ongoing discussion of the battle.

    Warm Up:

44 SSH IC, 15 ‘muricans, Don Quixotes, DMH, flutter kicks

Mosey to the rockpile and retrieve the rock of your choice.

While 2 PAX run to the top of SH the remainder does Overhead press, curls for the girls, squats and skull crushers 10 at a time, rinse and repeat. Some of the trips up the hill took longer than others and the rocks got a lot of use.

Second round repeat but the run was only 1/2 way up to head off a mutiny in the ranks.

Next round was suicide runs up and down SH in commemoration of the 15 of 15 planes and of Torpedo Squadron 8 from the USS Hornet that were shot down without a single hit on the Japanese fleet and 29 of 30 men who died in the attack. One of the most heroic actions in American history which served as a distraction for the Japanese pilots who decimated them but missed the dive bombers that swooped down at that moment and in 6 minutes destroyed three Japanese aircraft carriers.

We finished up with a horseshoe workout of 10 ‘muricans, 20 LBCs and 30 squats and run from rock pile to the bottom of the hill as we recalled Admiral Halsey’s comment that he was happy to share the Pacific with the Japanese navy saying we’ll take the top and they can have the bottom.

Circle up and review, count-o-rama, name-o-rama, a hearty welcome back to Beaker who did quite well for coming in off an extended time on the bench, good show!

Good work today men, with minimal complaining! None of us will ever stop an enemy navy in its tracks, but each of us has the opportunity today to halt the expansion of our real enemy. Will today be our turning point, our Midway, when we say no to those websites we know we shouldn’t be on, when we stop flirting with the woman at work, when we get honest with ourselves, our wives and our God about where we really are? Or will today be another day of bowing to our sinful masters and giving up ground? This is what the 2nd and 3rd Fs are all about.

  • Last breath of winter

Three men posted for the April arctic blast at SH.

    Warmarama:

SSH x 47 IC, Helicopters, DMH

    Rockpile for:

20 military presses, 20 Curls for the Girls, 20 Skull crushers, 20 LBC, 10 ‘Murcans, Run to the top of SH or 5 sets of sprints (forward or backward) across the lot Rinse and Repeat a 5 or 6 times, some punches at focus mitts (sort of) thrown in for grins and giggles and back to the (non-existent) flag.

    Prayers in COT

It was good to see Rosetta and Wilson again. If I never feel that arctic breeze running up SH I will be a happy man. You both did a great job getting the job done, a lot of mumble chatter, especially Wilson’s Child rearing advice (maybe you should be re-named Anne Landers?). Also a good number of quick punches were thrown, which is always fun even if Hermes isn’t around. There was no mercy in this dojo today!

  • The Return of Popeye

Popeye return for his 2nd post at Satan’s Hill and was met by a lack of New Marketeers. YHC q’d up 45 minutes of fun in a light rain.

    Warmarama: SSH, Russian soldiers, others

Rock Pile: Curls, military press, squats, skull crushers, run to the top of SH × 4.

Tour of New Market with stops at corners for ‘murcans, squats, other exercises

Return to the flag, one more set with rock, bear crawl and finish with a plank.

    Numberama, panorama close in prayer.

Good work by Popeye, the new War Daddy at SH.

  • 1st Q at SH

YHC was a little worried when he showed up in the gloom and was all alone for my first Q at Satan’s Hill. Fortunately Rosetta, Beavis and Nancy Lopez showed up and later Wilson and POG rounded out the cast for this 70 degree January morning. After the disclaimer was clearly stated this is what happened (as best as I can recall):

    Warmarama:

50 or so SSH-IC – The PAX stopped counting somewhere around 40 and the mumble-chatter and PAX members standing still indicated whatever number we were on was enough. Two laps of the parking lot.

    10 Don Quixotes-IC; 10 Imperial Walkers -IC; 10 ‘Murcans-IC; 10 Cherry Pickers-IC

    The Thang:

Mosey to the rock pile for a “larger than average coupon” as YHC said we would do no more than 10 repetitions of any particular exercise and John Cusack back to the circle. POG reminded us all that he was a toddler when the film was released. (YHC thought it was 1987, but Google says 1989)

At the circle OYO: 10 skull crushers; 10 curls for the girls; 10 military presses; 10 ‘Murcans; 10 LBCs: 10 Rosalitas and then a run to the top of Satan’s Hill -> rinse and repeat OYO. Rosetta set the pace with his gazelle-like gait and led us on six trips up the hill. One last bit of work with the coupons, three sets of wind sprints and finish up with some Suzanne Summers.

Numberama – Namarama – Announcements and Prayer requests

February 28th 5K for a good cause (Nancy or Wilson are your contacts and will give you the proper name).

YHC discussed 18 USC 1344, Bank Fraud and how if we want to be high impact men then we need to be transparent with our wives about everything, no secrets and that includes pornography and whatever else is rattling around inside our brain housing group. Anything less than complete honesty is a fraud against them, God and ourselves. Closed in prayer.

  • The Turning Point

Forgive the delayed post, apparently the G as caught on and now F3RVA is not allowed to post from the work computer so it had to wait.

5 PAX showed up for a morning of variety at SOT.  YHC showed p early for once and dropped off a few toys down by the track then returned to the top so I cold read the historical markers in the parking lot, fascinating!

Tuco had been sitting in the lot waiting, then Vinny, Tobit and Handshake rolled in and suddenly it was 70 and sunny at 5:30 so we moseyed to the lower lot for the warm up:

The first exercise was of course the SSH; the only proper way to start! IC X 41

    Cherry pickers IC x 10

The Hillbilly “YeeHaw!” IC x 13 (extra Credit to Vinny for shouting yeehaw at the conclusion as well)

Moroccan Night club IC x 20

Mosey to track for 8 minute AMLAP run – Tobit of course led the way as he took off like he was shot out of a cannon.  The old dog sauntering around the track probably didn’t even see the flash as he went by.

Retrieve the logs I dropped off earlier and circuit on the track (x2):

one man runs to the top of stairs others do stations:

    Overhead press

    Curls-4-the-Girls

    Rows

    Skull Crushers

    Sledgehammer shoulder raises

Short break for some Catch-me-if-you-can (YHC had to catch Tobit after 5 ‘murcans and I can attest tat he rns almost as fast backwards as forwards)

Return to another speed round on the circuit then mosey to the top lot for the final event: the tug-o-war using an old school rope.  2-on-2 with the odd man rotating in.  The lot was slick from rain so it was a little rough, those of us with newer sneakers had a distinct advantage.

COR – NOR – no announcements – discussion of the anniversary of the Battle of Midway June 4-6, 1942 I knew others would pluck the low hanging D-Day fruit but today we went back two years to a time when the US was out gunned and out classed in the Pacific, and in serious danger until US planes from the Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown found the Japanese fleet and ended up sinking 4 aircraft carriers, forever blunting the IJN’s carrier threat.  All this was possible only with the sacrifice of the American torpedo bomber pilots flying outdated planes – 42 planes found the fleet, only 12 planes returned as 69 pilots and crew were slaughtered.  That sacrifice however blinded the Japanese to the US dive bombers that were high above and destroyed the pride of the Japanese fleet.  Tis was an illustration for What sacrifices will we make to reach the turning point with the sin in our lives?

Prayer requests YHC took us out.

NMS-  Great work this morning fellas, I appreciated the willing to do odd things attitudes from everybody and I hope to bring the rope out when it is dry.

    COR – NOR – COT

    Announcements:

Wilson’s Golf Tournament – Suggestion to get together before that occurs to hit a few golfballs.

YHC was glad to Q this fine group of men on a rainy day.  As the Q YHC instituted a punishment regimen for un-wholesome talk.  Our verse today was Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight Oh Lord my strength and my Redeemer.”  All that was heard was good natured mumble-chatter that was G – Rated, Outstanding.  Tobit corrected YHC about adding an R to his name.  I took that opening to remind folks that Rosco ends in an o not an e.  I really learned “Don’t mess with Gumbo!  He is stout on the pushing and hit the focus mitts like a champ, elbows in, hands up, quick and always on target, nicely done.  It is always a pleasure gents.
