  • The Ultimate Saturday experience

14 men looking for a more enlightened F3 experience showed up at Gridiron for a workout full of sprints that are just so much fun because they involve a frisbee!

Mosey to Striker field with cones and frisbees, split up into two teams of 7 and one team sheds their shirts. A quick COP of SSH’s, various yoga stretches & poses, merkins, and burpees to get the blood flowing. Teams take sides and we were off! Teams scoring a goal did 15 2 count flutter kicks while the other team did 4 burpees. Switched excercises halfway through to 2 count Freddie Mercury’s and 15 merkins.

The Skins (Lighthouse, OC, Bennett (FNG), Fudd, Chicheron, Snuff, & Flatty) quickly took the lead, scoring 5 goals in rapid succession. It became evident rather quickly that this was arguably the best Ultimate team that F3RVA had every fielded and OC’s son Bennett (FNG) was the cream of our crop. In an effort to keep the game interesting we “traded” Bennett to the Shirts (Labrat, White Deer, McRib, Pinto, Byproduct, Handshake, & Upchuck) although that team failed to trade anyone back, so at that point it became 8 vs. 6.

Both teams continued to score and the Skins kept a healthy lead until 7:48am when Snuff remarked that the Shirts would have to score one goal every two minutes to catch us (It was 10-4 at that point). And damned if that wasn’t the moment that the Shirts found their mojo and the Skins started dropping passes! The Shirts came roaring back, scoring 5 goals in the last 12 minutes to almost catch the winning team! Thankfully for YHC’s pride, the Skins held out and took home the virtual trophy.

NMS: YHC can truthfully say that I have more fun playing Ultimate than just about any other version of F3. It is a game that admittedly has a higher chance of injury than other pursuits so that’s always something to consider, especially with the typical crowd that graces Gridiron. Despite the risk, we had the perfect number for an awesome match! Notable callouts include Snuff who’s “ups” resulted in many interceptions or blocked passes, Sunkist who probably scored the most goals for both teams, and Flatty who utilized his stellar vocal prowess to test the nerves of any opposing player in his vicinity that was trying to catch a pass. Labrat was also vocal about the fact that this is against the rules (yelling, mumbling, farting, or doing anything to break the concentration of a player trying to catch a pass). Who knew?! White Deer suprised everyone by running quite a bit and did a surprisingly good job at catching & passing! Fun was had by all and everyone was smoked by the end as my iWatch said we ran/sprinted 3 miles during that hour, in addition to the other exercises. Coffee at Starbucks afterwards was great as always.

Thanks for letting me lead gents and for a great Saturday morning!

    Never stop chasing the wabbit!

PS – Ultimate will be played again this week at Heartbreak Ridge!

  • 11 is not an even number

11 warriors arose extra early from the fart sack to see what Fudd had in store. YHC arrived at 4:59:30 and hit the circle on the run to get us started. The owl in residence barely had time to register what happened before we were gone, but here’s what he hooted to his friends….

Mosey around the neighborhood to get our legs loose. Circle up in front of the church for COP: SSH, helicopters, DQ’s, plank, stretches, some ab stuff, merkins, arm circles, and some other stuff…..

Mosey to Kubota’s truck for the 8 blocks left from the original horde that has slowly dwindled due to ill use. Partner up in the corner of the lot for a rotation. One man does exercises with the block while P2 runs a lap around the lot. Block exercises included squats, swings, curls, overhead press, bench press, and maybe some other stuff.

Mosey to the south side of the lot and bear crawl about 25 yards and crawl bear back, lunge 50 yards and Bernie Sanders back, karaoke to the median and then back to the start.

Return to the blocks for a circle of exercises. Off man holds Al Gore while the other man does the exercise…..curls, overhead press, squats, swings…..basically the same stuff we did before.

Take the blocks back to Kubota’s truck and do some more Mary until the bell tolled. Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out.

NMS: Handshake was noticeably absent after lamenting YHC’s choice of a speaker beatdown at Hoedown earlier this week. Mumblechatter was thick today which is always a signature of a Fudd beatdown, and YHC wouldn’t have it any other way. Why post if you can’t talk smack? Things would have no doubt been livelier if our Chief Dissenter had been present, but coffee afterwards was, as always, a welcome and well earned dessert. Glad to have Wojo post again after a long hibernation.

Announcements: Frozen Triangle and 10K training team for the Healing Circle on 2/10 and Oyster wants everyone to do Breaking Bread on their birthday month.

Thanks for letting me lead boys. It’s always a pleasure to ensure that your endorphins are properly released in the gloom. Keep chasing that wabbit and remember that God loves you, regardless of what anyone else says.

  • Tunes in the gloom

Mosey to the blacktop for some tunes and ground & pound.

1st song – Beat It – hold plank and do 1 shoulder tap merkin each time MJackson sings “Beat It”. Not sure how many we did in total but it felt like a lot.

2nd song – The Beast by Sixwire – rotate between 4 exercises, changing with each new riff/song. Squats, forward alternating lunges, backwards alternating lunges, speedskaters.

3rd song – Heroes – do SSH for the entirety, stopping to do 1 burpee every time we hear “We could be”

    4 corners on the blacktop. Rd 1 merkins x 10, squats x 20, 2 ct flutters x 30, LBC’s x 40. Rd 2 add 10 to each set and repeato.

    NMS:

Always seeking to change things up from the usual, YHC decided some tunes would be a nice distraction. The PAX did not seem disappointed and it seems a solid beatdown was enjoyed by all. YHC’s legs are a bit more sore than was expected, and that is a most welcome development. Tclaps to everyone for putting out a great effort. Nice to have Pigskin back from Honduras.

Announcements: Westhoe ShieldLock at Dunkin on Patterson Tues nights at 7pm. We are reading “Heart of a Warrior” by Michael Thompson so if you plan to come you’ll need to buy the book.

Sign up for Breaking Bread in the month of your birthday.

    Frozen Triangle Feb. 10th.

Thanks for letting me lead today fellas. Let’s remember all of the blessings that we have, especially those that we take for granted. And don’t forget the reasons you post in the gloom…..everyday people do everyday things but we can’t be one of them. You are a hero to more people than you know…..especially your 2.0’s and M. Go be the best version of yourself today for them.

And never stop chasing the wabbit!

NMS – Had some good mumblechatter today about some bad past experiences with various spirits, the 4 teams that qualified for the CFP (poor FSU), VCU’s dismal start to the basketball season, and doing burpees until you throw up. It was a great 45 minutes with solid dudes and YHC enjoyed all of it. Thanks for letting me lead today boys.

    Never stop chasing the wabbit!

  • Blocks, Frisbees, & #WeLoveSaab

17 eager beavers appeared in the gloom for a Fudd FW beatdown.

    The Thang:

COP in the parking lot – arm circles, merkins, yoga, SSH’s, flutter kicks, rosalitas, DQ’s, and maybe something else

Mosey to corner of Westham & River – 2 burpees OYO

Mosey to Saab’s house – 5 burpees OYO

Mosey around the front hedge to the meat of Saab’s front yard, line up in a row, face the street and do Monkey Humpers in cadence until Saab appeared, quite unexpectedly, on his front porch and sat down to put his running shoes on.

Mosey to College and down to the corner of Glen Pkwy to retrieve 6 blocks. Mosey to the disc golf course for some fun with discs and blocks. It Pays to be a Winner! Form teams of 3, one frisbee and one block per team. Take turns throwing disc towards basket/hole. Rotate exercises with blocks (murder bunnies, overhead carry, walking curls, & lunges), 2 other PAX bear crawl or lunge, progressing to where the disc landed. Lowest score per hole = fewest # of burpees. Burpees OYO completed after each hole (only had time for 3 holes).

Mosey back to the corner of Glen to stash blocks, run to top of hill at Westham for 5 burpees OYO. Mosey back to the flag for some mary.

Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out.

Announcements: Tuck-a-Ruck for canned food taking place at 7pm on 11/17. Meet at Hoedown at 6:45. Contact Lockjaw if you plan to donate canned food either at the start or to be picked up on the ruck. Estimated time to finish 3 hours followed by a fire and beer at some as yet undisclosed location (Splinter’s house?)

    Naked Mole Skin:

Welcome to Jockey from downrange in NC….the name of his hometown escapes me. Great having him at FW! Also great to have Swirly and NTB in attendance, as they are not FW regulars. The highlight of YHC’s morning was definitely Saab’s sudden appearance on his porch as we were completing the monkey humpers. YHC’s first thought was, how did he get dressed that fast? Maybe he sleeps in his running shorts. YHC’s second thought was one of alarm as he was carrying something in his hand….YHC had a slight moment of panic thinking it might be a weapon and he was there to confront the trespassers in his yard. Thankfully, it was his running shoes and he casually sat down and started to tie them on. YHC wasn’t sure, but thought he could see a wide Cheshire grin on the face of our esteemed colleague. I hope we made your morning sir because you certainly made ours!

Blocks and discs were a welcome change to the usual drudgery of the parking lot behind the church. YHC would have like to have played more holes but 45 minutes doesn’t give us much time.

Coffeeteria at Starbucks was great as always. Thanks for letting me lead today fellas. It was great to see so many familiar faces in the gloom.

Never stop chasing the wabbit. 🙂

  • Timberwolf Takeover Hot Potato

12 studs posted to Tomahawk Creek Middle for what was supposed to be a Boberry beatdown, but 3 Westhoe PAX had other ideas. According to the maintenance worker who pulled in mid workout, this is what transpired:

    The THANG:

    Fudd evolution:

COP – various exercises to warm the body up, the most popular of which seemed to be pigeon pose.

Mosey to the football field & partner up. P1 does an exercise on the 50 yrd line while P2 runs to the end zone to do burpees, rinse and repeat before next round. Rd 1: P1 holds plank, P2 5 burpees. Rd 2: P1 does squats, P2 7 burpees. Rd 3: P1 does monkey humpers, P2 9 burpees.

    Pass the Q to Splinter:

Mosey to the tennis courts, line up on the far eastern side. Run across the width of 2 courts, do 15 merkins, run back, do 30 squats, run back, do 40 LBC’s. Rinse and repeat for 2 more rounds of various exercises that YHC can’t recall, repeating the 15, 30, 40 rep progressions. Rd 2 had us bernie sandering in stead of running, and round 3 was karaoke.

Pass the Q to EF Hutton:

Mosey to the concrete pad by the VSF for solo Dora. Rds 1 & 2, do 25 merkins and run to the garbage bins and back between each set. Rds. 3 & 4 do 50 monkey humpers between runs. Rds 5 & 6 do 75 SSH’s between runs. Rds 7 & 8 do 75 LBC’s between runs.

Numberama, Namerama, EF Hutton took us out.

NMS: The WestHoe boys felt compelled to even the monthly challenge score which now stands at 4-4. Apologies to Boberry but all’s fair when the Ghost Flag is at stake. Mumblechatter was high today and the fellowship was in full display….a great vibe amongst some very solid dudes. What appeared to be a school maintenance worker in a van pulled in as we were doing the Monkey Humper evolution of the solo Dora. He was undoubtedly disturbed by what he was witnessing and turned his headlights off as quickly as possible after parking.

#TClaps to EF Hutton for this monthly challenge as it’s kicked up the competitive notch a bit but it also has brought the 2 nano-regions closer together, which I think is a great thing. Let’s keep praying for opportunities to spot the Sad Clowns in our daily lives and for the courage to ask them to join us in the gloom.

Prayers for Maine following their mass shooting yesterday as well as Israel and that whole region.

    Announcements:

Lunch at Rusty Taco’s (Westchester Commons) tomorrow, 10/27 at 11:45. Oyster may or may not be buying.

SOJ Ruck for food event Nov 11. See Orange Crush for details.

I’m sure I speak for Splinter and Hutton when I say that it was an honor and a pleasure, as always, to lead good men in the gloom. Keep chasing the wabbit fellas!

  • Laughter in the Gloom

8 aspiring comedians descended on Mary Munford to get their sweat on and enjoy a Fudd beatdown. Here’s how things progressed:

The Thang: Mosey to COP at the Northwest corner of the property.

    SSH x 50

Arm circles small forward x 20

Arm circles small backward x 20

Arm circles big forward x 10

Arm circles medium backward x 10

    Merkins IC x 10

    Hello Dollys x 20

    Speed skaters x 20

    Maybe something else

Mosey to the map of the country on the blacktop for various exercises done to the music of Sixwire’s “The Beast” which is one continuous succession of 22 different songs done with instrumentals only (mostly guitars) and ends with…..you guessed it, Free Bird. The PAX did 2 rounds of the following exercises, transitioning at every song: Burpees, SSH, LBC’s, Merkins, Squat jumps, Flutter kicks, Alternating lunges, Speed skaters, Wide grip merkins, Hello Dolly’s, Plank.

Mosey to the pull up bars for 2 rounds of the following:

    3 pullups

    6 hanging leg raises

    9 merkins

    12 Lt Dans

    15 SSH

    18 LBC’s

Partner up for 2 rounds of the following: partner one bernie sanders around the track and P2 does 5 burpees and runs after P1. When they meet, the switch places and P2 does 5 burpees and chases P1. Rinse and repeat until lap is completed.

Mosey back to the SF for various Mary exercises.

Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out.

    NMS:

So many titles could have been chosed for this backblast due to the plethora of jokes and laughs that occurred today in the gloom. YHC couldn’t decide on one so I didn’t. For starters, today was TYA and Saab’s first bootcamp workout since going out on IR, and YHC was honored that they chose today to do so. Saab was quick to return to his cantakerous, contrarian ways by stopping during the first COP exercise, SSH’s, after about 20 and just standing there for a while. Bodos followed suit a bit and the rest of the PAX powered all the way through to 50. During the first round of arm circles, Saab voiced his displeasure with this exercise, which prompted YHC to add 3 more rounds, to everyone’s enjoyment and amusement.

The Beast song/exercise seemed to be well received by the PAX and mumblechatter was high. Watching Saab do the speed skaters was the highlight of my week. Instead of swinging his arms speed skater style, he spread his arms and hands and did a curtsy with each movement. Having two daughters that take ballet, YHC was amazed at Saab’s form. It was as good as these professionals (see link: https://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=mcafee&ei=UTF-8&p=ballerina+curtsey&type=E211US714G0#id=1&vid=45584271313d1c06a3f7a797cf97d7b4&action=click)

The track work was a nice balance to the bootcamp exercises from the first two stations, and everyone seemed gassed by the end. This was one of the most enjoyable workouts that YHC has attended in some time. The laughing started before we even launched and didn’t finish until the end. It reminded YHC of the early days of F3RVA when everything was new and exciting and funny as hell. I wish I could bottle this and take it around to every AO to be opened every morning. Alas, we’ll have to rely on each other.

Given the job struggles that YHC has endured recently, today’s fellowship was exactly what the doctor ordered. Thanks as always men for letting me lead. I love you guys and appreciate you more than I’ll ever be able to put into words.

  • Fog & Fields

3 svelte aspiring Tour de France participants hit the roads of Goochland this morning for a Pedal Powered beatdown. Fog was present in abundance but the cooler temps were a welcome change from summer. The mileage wasn’t too high but it was a solid workout nonetheless. YHC enjoyed the conversation and time in the saddle with these brothers. We missed having No Tools along, as he is never short on interesting conversation, but he was apparently in need of some beauty sleep this morning.

Announcements: the Tour de Midnight is on 10/21 starting at 8am. There are 3 distance options (17, 33, and 60 miles). Find out more at https://www.bikereg.com/tourdemidnight

  • Weakness is Pain leaving the body

A baker’s dozen posted to see what Fudd had in store for Hoedown today. Bodos offered refreshing breath to any takers (there were none) and we were off.

Mosey to the front of the school for COP:

    SSH x 46

    DQ’s x 10

    Helicopters x 10

Dead Man Hang down to plank and then various yoga poses

    Arm Circles

    Flutter Kicks

Mosey to the Lindsay cul de sac, partner up. One partner runs to the top of the street while the other bear crawls. Switch and then take turns doing Bernie Sanders and then broad jump burpees until the team reaches the top.

Mosey to the alley on the side of the school for a triple check. Partner 1 does a wall sit, P2 does squats (with good form), and P3 runs to the front of the school around the lit up sign and back. Rinse and repeat until all 3 P’s have done 3 of each rotation.

Mosey to the bottom of the sloped asphalt next to the parking lot. Face down hill in plank and crawl bear up the hill by intervals called out by YHC, pausing to hold plank until the next interval, until all PAX reach the fence. Then do Heels to Heaven x 20.

Mosey back to the SF for Mary. Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out.

    NMS:

Bodos spent the pre-workout time drinking coffee before popping in a stick of gum just prior to launch. He was kind enough to offer a stick to everyone else although no one partook. YHC would be concerned with aspirating that thing but still appreciate the gesture. Seeing Bodos with coffee was surprising given that after doing the same at a recent Spider Run, he promptly had the urge to take his morning constitutional. This instigated a convo about the best tasting coffee and Bodos apparently has the best brew pot in the world. When YHC admitted that he uses a $30 brew pot from WalMart, Bodos was aghast. Doozy mentioned that he had tried a high dollar pot at one time, which promptly broke, and he was back to the $30 special himself. This made YHC feel a little less shame, however thoughts of expensive coffee continue to dance through my head……we’ll see what Santa has in store at Christmas. Mumblechatter was fairly heavy today which is typical for a Fudd Q, and welcome as far as I’m concerned. If no one’s talking that’s kind of boring IMO. YHC attempted to challenge the PAX in proper form of various exercises, as well as trying to motivate the PAX to maximum effort during the last plank of the Mary session around the SF. At one point, YHC said, “Remember…..weakness is pain leaving the body” which prompted immediate corrections from Upchuck and Splinter. However, the PAX knew what YHC was getting at and appreciation is felt for their tolerance of the occasional mistake. Mumblechatter continued post workout on Slack as there were no merkins performed during today’s beatdown, which was intentional due to YHC’s shoulder PT which is ongoing. Methinks a solid beatdown was still experienced, although I would defer to the PAX that were there for their opinions.

As always, it was an honor and a privilege to lead today. Never lose hope boys, and never stop chasing the wabbit!

  • Food, Fellowship, and unexpected blessings at Breaking Bread

The M & YHC served Lasagna, Caesar salad, Garlic bread, desert and tea to 9 great folks this evening. We also sat down and ate a meal with a couple of great guys. God led me to sit down across from a man who will soon be getting both knees replaced and is also slated for back surgery. He’s homeless but should be getting an apartment soon. He’s in his fifties, his wife died 5 years ago and his son just died recently from Fentanyl poisoning. Despite all of this, this man’s faith in God was remarkable and inspiring. Most of you know I’ve been going through a tough time at work lately and talking to this man was exactly what I needed this evening. We each talked about the trials we’ve had to endure, the ones we are enduring now, and the burden of carrying on even when we don’t see a way through. He reminded me that God can get us through anything, and had always provided a way for him even though at the time he could not see that a way was possible. He made it a point to emphasize that we must give God our burdens…..we must release them in order for our good Father to do His work. This has been very difficult for me recently. It’s easy to get trapped in the cycle of obsessing about how you’ve been wronged, persecuted, and how you don’t deserve it. Well, Jesus didn’t deserve the scourging, beatings, the crown of thorns, or the cross but He endured it all willingly to save us all. The least I can do is try my best every day to give him my cares and worries and let His will be done in my life.

I went there tonight eager to bless others, never knowing that I would be blessed immeasurably more in return.
