  • Swirly’s Kryptonite…

5 studs found the deepest of gloom in Forest Hill Park for a Batteau beatdown that went something like this:

The initial foursome moseyed (carefully) to the  flat concrete area at the bottom of the steps but right before the Hill of Ill Repute for COP, including:

    • DQs
    • Helicopters
      • OH, we see a light, who could that be — the light is too high, so its not Sippy, and then Swirly says “looks like ABBA” … really, from 35-40 yards out in the darkest of glooms, Swirly identified ABBA somehow – from his gate or his scent …how?  Who knows, but don’t sleep on Corporate.  He doesn’t need facial recognition or light.  He knows who you are.
    • SSHs
    • Imperial Walkers

    THE THANG

Modified Sisyphus (thanks Mr. Holland!) (YHC can’t afford the royalties necessary to copy the whole thing)

Time to get the show on the road…short mosey up the steps to the Hill of Ill Repute for a modified Sisyphus.  This Sisyphus went like so:

    • Run down to the 1st lamp-post, bearcrawl back up to the starting point…plank for six.
    • Run to “big tree” between 1st and 2nd lamp-post, do 25 Derkins (facing down mountain), run back up tot he top…plank for six.
    • Run to 2nd lamp-post, 30 WWIIs uphill, run back to the top…plank for six.
    • Run to 3rd lamp-post, do 5 squats, 5 jump squats and 5 2-ct mountain climbers, run to the top…plank for six.  (NOTE: in the true Sisyphus, this stop consists of a triple check or dora…had to modify for time and for lack of IP rights…Mr. Holland is a brutal negotiator).
    • Run to the 4th lamp-post, do 10 burpees and Al Gore there for the six (don’t worry, we will go back up later)

    Mosey Around The Lake

1 lap around the lake, stopping at each lamp-post for an exercise – alternating between 5 merkins and 5 2-ct Freddie Mercuries.  If the lamp-post is out, add 1 burpee as a penalty.  Oddly, the burpees only happened at merkin stops.  Al Gore at the bottom of the Hill of Ill Repute for the six

Mosey up the Hill of Ill Repute

Catch Your Breathe MARY, all IC, including…

    • Flutter Kicks
    • Dolly
    • Rosalita
    • APDs
    • American Hammers

Tennis Court Suck, with Swirly’s Kryptonite…he may have x-ray vision, but he’s no Rocky Balboa with a jump rope…

4 exercise stations spread along one baseline = box cutters, 25lb KB Swings, 35lb KB Squats, Jump Rope.  The rabbit sprinted the long sideline, karaoke across the opposite baseline and backwards lunged back to the exercise baseline.  Rotate when rabbit returns.  Repeato x3

Merkin ROF…and time was up.  Back to the Flag

COT, Number-rama, Name-a-rama and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

    • Rosie’s 12-days of Christmas at NoToll tomorrow.  The Ghost Flag is up for grabs there also.  Extra points for holiday cheer.
    • HDHH at Capital Ale House, Midlothian, Wednesday 5:30 until ??
    • Book signing for Hardywood’s daughter Wednesday at Crossroads

    NMS:

It has been a while, but YHC Q’d at Batteau a while back and brought two jump ropes.  We learned at that time that actual jump ropes might be Swirly’s kryptonite, so naturally YHC vowed to grab another Batteau Q and bring them back…well today was the day. But, we had to put in some hill and lake work first.  Those are my favorite aspects of Batteau.  YHC will be back in 2019 for sure with jump ropes in tow.  No doubt Swirly will be ready!

It became clear that jump roping is a required class at VMI as Faceplant and YHC had 3 clean rounds.  Faceplant was generating some serious noise and energy during his rounds.  Vinny suggested Dominion hook him up to a transformer box and collect that energy.  Maybe next time.

Strong effort by all this morning.  For me personally, the 30 uphill WWIIs on the Hill of Ill Repute took the wind right out of me.  I think I slid downhill about 10 feet during those.

Happily no actual Faceplants this morning while running on slick cobblestone steps or through wet leaves.  Great work men.  Always a pleasure to load up Gumbo’s Food Truck and make a delivery.  See you in 2019!

    No More Gumbo For You!

  • Ice Cold Potato at SOT

3 jugglers posted and finally emerged from their warm vehicles right at 0530 for an Ice Cold Potato beatdown that went like this:

COP (Gumbo) including SSHs, DQs, Helicopters, Imperial Walkers, Merkins and Freddie Mercuries

    THE THANG:

Burp in a Box (Gumbo) – 5 parking lot spaces and an ice-free (relatively) loop around the parking lot.  1 burpee in the first space, run a lap, 2 burpees in the second space, run a lap…repeato until 5 burpees in the last space and a lap.

toss the snow ball to Bullseye  and mosey down to the far bus loop for some crawlbear line tracers – crawl bear halfway down the bus parking line (longer than the car space line), then sprint back to the starting point and do 10 jump squats. Repeato x3.

Somewhere in here we did some plank work led by Bullseye – moving from plank to elbow plank and back.

Rosie is up….Triple Check with lunges, alternating shoulder taps and a run around the large parking lot…watch for ice patches…no spills.

Back to Gumbo for Love Alley – 1 runner 2 men doing the exercises, working our way down the alley to the ice slick and back.  Exercises were broad-jump burpees, Russian Soldiers and Polar bears.  We all found ice, but still no spills!

Back to Bullseye and we headed to the front door of the school to find the snow and some benches for 2 rounds of 25 Dips and 10 backwards lunges (raising the knee up on the front swing) each leg.

Rosie closed it out with the following:

    • 30 second wall sit – 1 snow burpee — must get snow on your chest!
    • 30 second wall sit – 2 snow burpees
    • 30 second wall sit – 3 snow burpees
    • Mosey back to the parking lot for Rando-rama, including (among other things):
      • Peter parkers
      • Diamond merkins
      • Werkins
      • Raised leg APDs
      • Monkey Humpers
      • Pickle Pounders
      • LBCs
      • side elbow plank with some hip raises
      • Superman
      • and more…

COT, Number-rama, Name-a-rama and some fellowship because after all of that it didn’t feel so cold.

    NMS:

It was great to get back out int he gloom after a couple days off for me.  After the first blast of cold and after we started moving, it felt great.  Lots of ice patches discovered but  no spills so that was a success.

We discussed DK and his back issues – hopefully he is on the mend.  Get well soon brother.

I hope everyone has been safe on the roads these last few days.  Great to see folks posting but safety first…or at least second!

Happy Hump Day — oh, HDHH, next week 12/19 at Capital Ale House Midlothian!

    No More Gumbo For You!

  • Sunday Funday Five-Pack

4 men who just have not have not had enough Gumbo this week posted to the Sunday Funday run this morning.  Vinny even came barreling in with the Stache still in tact – that thing should have its own side-car.  The consensus was that the trails were likely muddy, so instead we opted for the roads.  We crossed the bridge over to Riverside Drive and worked our way down to Pottersfield bridge and across, up the big hill from Tredgard up toward the Va War Memorial, then weaved our way through Oregon Hill and back to the Pump House.  By YHC’s watch it was just under 7.5 miles.  Great run.  Better Fellowship.

Thanks for indulging me all week.  It has been awesome.  Have a great rest of your Sunday men!  I hope Bear Creek is going well for all the F3RVA participants.

And, there really is No More Gumbo For You…for a while.

  • Inaugural Magnum PI Appreciation Day…And a tip of the cap to Bush 41

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR9WJToFsTs

31 fired up men posted to Dogpile to start their weekend off the only way us F3 men know how…with a beatdown that went like this:

Start with a few pre-launch STACHE photos of YHC and Vinny looking strong with their Magnum PI shirts and dirty upper lips.  Glorious.  0530, ok, let’s roll…

Mosey to the circle in front of the amphitheater and around then circle up for a S.T.A.C.H.E. COP, including:

    • SSHs x12
    • Tempo Merkins x11
    • APDs x19
    • Copperhead Squats x80…in theory…no idea how many were actually done (NOTE to future Qs, don’t announce a number of exercises, unless its Arm Circles, unless you want the PAX to completely screw up the counting)
    • Monkey Humpers (for Wilson) x10
    • Eight Burpees

[NOTE: 12/11/1980 was the debut of Magnum PI.  It ran for 8 years.  The 10 Monkey Humpers were irrelevant (other than just to get the “H” and a little extra leg burn]

    THE THANG

Mosey down to the Golden Triangle for Lindsays with an Ode To Bush 41 – Typical Lindsays (40s) starting near the circle with 30 LBCs and 10 2-ct Mountain Climbers + 1 Burpee (to add up to 41), then run down Rugby Road hill to the bottom and do 25 LBCs, 15 Mountain Climbers and 1 Burpee…continue until you get to 10-30-1.  Plank for the six.

    Alternating Shoulder Taps IC x20

Mosey to the lawn for Four Corners, including 10 merkins, 20 box cutters, 30 jump squats and 40 SSHs…Al Gore for Six.

    • 3 rounds of 10 jerkins

Indigenous People run back to the flag…jail break near all the potholes

COT, Number-rama, Name-a-rama and YHC took us out

    Announcements:

    • Marmaduke is collecting winter clothes.
    • Fudd is leaving..no really, he’s leaving…well, at least he is starting his new job in Denver on Monday.  We wish him well.  Show those F3Denver guys how we do it here.  See you next Saturday at Dogpile!
    • Good luck to the guys running Bear Creek tomorrow…TYA, Shakedown, Gomer, Circle K and others?

    NMS:

It was a beautiful morning and Dogpile is always a blast.  The PAX is large, energetic and full of mumblechatter (and full of some noxious 4th F this morning too).  We ran a lot and kept it moving form the launch this morning.  Way to push guys.

Welcome to 2 FNGs as well – FNG-Recall (Jason – a Toyota Technician and the latest New Market addition to the PAX. He even rucked a few miles before the beatdown…Respect!) and FNG-Jump Street (previously Brown Water) (Doah – an intern with VDOT who Shakedown brought out.  He is 22 and his spirit animal is a Kangaroo, he likes to climb trees…occassionally and he kind of looks like Johnny Depp or like he could be an undercover high school cop…ergo, Jump Street).  Welcome guys.  You killed it today.  We hope to see you back out soon and often.

Also, Vinny and YHC have conspired to challenge the PAX to bring back the STACHEs next year and have dubbed the first Saturday in December (consistent with its 12/11/1980 debut) Magnum PI day, so treat your lip follicles properly for growing in 11 months and get a hawaiian shirt – we will see you with staches and shirts on 12/7/19.  We may even make it a fundraiser while we humiliate ourselves (errr, I mean look freaking AWESOME!).

6 days, 6Qs in the books.  1 more on the trails tomorrow.  Thanks for indulging me all week and sorry to those of you have had some redundant workouts.  I’m not that creative.

A couple other guys (Vandalay and Dr. Tryhard) also had birthdays this week…HBD guys!

    Have a great Saturday guys.

No More Gumbo For You…until Sunday Funday tomorrow.

  • Gumbo was finally served at the Creek

9 awesome men and boys posted to the Creek this morning for a serving of Gumbo and it was worth the wait…at least for YHC.  The age differential in the PAX was 52 years with Wild Thing at 62 (RESPECT, RESPECT) as the War Daddy and Recess and Ewok at 10 (HATE, HATE, HATE, RESPECT!) bookending the PAX.  What an awesome sight.  I am humbled at the strength and determination of these men and boys.  Very inspiring and motivational to see men and boys working together to motivate each other and push each other.

The serving went something like this:

Mosey 1 recon lap around the church to warm up for COP, which obviously included:

    • SSHs x20
    • Tempo Merkins x20
    • APDs x20
    • Cooperhead Squats x20
    • Hillbillies x20
    • Eleven Burpees OYO

Lindsay – LBCs and Jump Squats with a run across the field in between.

Plank-o-Rama for the Six then 10 Alternating Shoulder Taps IC

Triple Check – Exercises were Dips and Derkins while the third member bearcrawled to the end of the line of trailers (about 30 yards I would say…on rocks..oops!) and then ran back.  Three times through.

The Suck – 8 exercise stations and 1 rabbit who ran around the church (or if you are Chewy, around the Church and parking lot for extra credit.  Well done young man!).  When runner returned, everyone bearcrawled to the next station.  Exercise stations were:

    1. Jump ropes…actual not invisible
    2. 25lb KB Swings
    3. 35lb KB Squats
    4. SSHs
    5. LBCs
    6. Flutter Kicks
    7. Carolina Dry Docks
    8. Elbow Plank

ROF – everyone started in plank and when it came to you, do 10 merkins, then 10 box cutters, then pop up to Al Gore – next man starts when the 10 merkins were finished.

    3 MOM:

    • Freddie Mercuries
    • Hello Dollies
    • American Hammers

COT, Number-Rama, Name-A-Rama and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

    • Good luck to the fellas running Bear Creek on Sunday – Gomer, TYA, Shakedown, Circle K…others?
    • Restoration Church First Noelle tomorrow at Honey Meadows Clubhouse – 0930 – see Spit or The Carpenter for details
    • Spit has stepped up for December Breaking Bread (well done!) – let’s make sure he gets some helping hands.
    • Chewy, MudFace and No Idea are doing the local Rugged in May – let them know if you want to join the team.

    NMS:

A beautiful morning for a drive and a beatdown.  I am thankful for no last-minute or early morning surprises this time, so I was able to finally make it to the Creek.  It is a great AO, and I was looking forward to seeing the 2.0s and the age disparity, and Wild Thing and Chewy, Recess and Ewok made that happen.  Gumbo will be served at the Creek again!

Thanks for letting me lead.  It was a pleasure.  Sorry, again, about the bearcrawls through the rocks.  I thought about and audible, but you guys are too tough for that!  There wasn’t even any complaining…at least not out loud!

    Have a great Friday everyone.

No More Gumbo For You…until tomorrow at Dogpile.

  • The Bottomless Bowl of Gumbo…the gift that keeps on giving

The Gumbo was packaged up for a trip across the Rivah this morning to be served, COLD, to 18 other fine gentlemen (mostly), including 1 FNG, at 45MOM, here are the side dishes that were served with the Gumbo:

Mosey to and around the basketball courts to get the blood flowing…wait, still cold? Ok, 25 Burpees OYO to match the initial reading on YHC’s car this morning at 0450.  Now the blood is flowing.

Continue with a S-T-A-C-H-E COP, including:

    • SSHs x20
    • Tempo Merkins x20 (good thing the number of the day today was not 40 – YHC is still sore from 40 TMs on Tuesday)
    • APDs x20
    • Captain Thors  – 5 rounds OYO
    • Hillbillies x 20
    • Eight-count Bodybuilders  x10 — counting needed work here but we got the gist.

    THE THANG:

    Lindays Across the Field

Six-inches/Heels to Heaven Ring of Fire

2 MOM, including box cutters and hello Dollies until Wayne and Garth yelled “CAR” and time was up!

COT, Number-rama, Name-a-rama and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

    • Marmaduke is still collecting winter clothing.  Bring it to Dogpile if you can.
    • Several PAX members are doing Bear Creek this weekend.  Good luck to all – let’s hope nobody gets lost and the trail isn’t too muddy.

    NMS:

The sight of HoneyDo strolling into the group 4 minutes prior to launch with the guns and knees out was fantastic.  At the 1-minute call, Hardywood lost the coffee mug and a few layers.  There were several other SOP folks too.  Well done guys.

LOTS of mumblechatter this morning, which was great. The energy was high and the true slaughter starter got the blood flowing quickly and I think made everyone forget the temperature in a hurry.  Strong work on the Lindsays and the Dora.  Conspiracy was rolling solo and killing the sprints…nice work.

It is always great to grab a Q at a location where you don’t often Q, and 45MOM in particular is a great one because there is always a great and lively PAX.  Great work this morning guys.  And, welcome to Snip-It (Brian).  Look forward to seeing you back in the gloom soon and often.

Continue to crush the rest of  your Thursday men!

No More Gumbo For You…until The Creek tomorrow.

    No new announcements.

    NMS:

YHC arrived early – maybe 0508 or so to find an empty Rosie mobile – he had to leave a few minutes early so he arrived early for a few frosty miles.  Well done sir!  Roper, Wedding Singer and Tobit rolled in before the bell and we had 5 so off we went – no triple checks or partner work so perfect for some SUCKage!

It was damn cold out there today, so YHC tried to keep the group moving.  Everyone was appropriately layered up – we might have even broken a sweat.  YHC’s core was hurting after the American Hammers and the LightPole Row got me also.

    Great work today fellas.

No More Gumbo For You…until tomorrow at 45MOM!

  • The Number of the Day…40

    NMS:

It was a bit chilly this morning but we got the blood flowing and the sweat rolling – especially with the 40 Tempo Merkins…OUCH!  That was a lot of work just to get a “T” in the rotation.  Total of 180 Merkins today for those keeping count.  That ship sailed for YHC long ago.

Another extra credit morning for the New Market Rucking crew.  Great job guys.  Honeymoon even found $20 during the 4 corners….that extra credit pays off!

Great to have a good crowd out at NoToll.  Sorry to not take advantage of the lovely fields.  The parking lot seemed like the right size for the 40s.

Strong work by all this morning.  See you all in the gloom – I’ll be here all week!

No More Gumbo For You…until tomorrow at SOT.

  • This 40-year old Gumbo will give you the runs…

9 turkey stuffed (and Disney overloaded) warriors of the gloom posted to River Run this morning to get a few miles in (6 to run and 3 to ruck) and to help YHC enter the silent decade.  Being YHC’s 40th birthday, I decided to add a little present along with every mile – 40 merkins.  As a group, the 6 runners headed to the track about a half-mile away. At the track the instructions were to run a mile, do 40 merkins, then repeat as many times as possible.  Most got 3 to 3.5 miles.  Rosie I think got a full 4 on the track.  Then a half-mile back to the flag and a final 40 merkins to top off the celebration.

The 3 Ruckers, got an early start then joined the PAX just prior to 0530 for the send off.  They headed up Twin Team and around for additional miles and rejoined the PAX at the flag at 0615.

COT, Number-rama, Name-a-rama and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

    • Marmaduke is still collecting coats.  He made the first drop-off of about 50 coats and jackets to a shelter this past weekend.  Let’s fill him up with 50 more!
    • YHC is still growing the beard and mustache for No Shave November to fight cancer in honor of my dad – see here if you are so inclined:  https://no-shave.org/member/GoldmanMP

    NMS:

It was great being back in the gloom.  Thanks to Kubota for making the trip SOJ to help YHC celebrate the end of Hate.

    Have a great day men.

    No More Gumbo For You…

  • Gumbo’s Last Post with Hate…

9 SOJers (or SOJers at heart…Handshake) broke the warm hold of the bed and posted to Twin Team this morning for warm bowl of Gumbo…sort of.  This is  how it went:

Back to the flag for COT, Number-rama, Name-a-rama, Announcements and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

    • Marmaduke is still collecting coats and jackets – any kinds, kid’s, men’s, woman’s.  Bring them all.
    • A few prayer requests for some families at St. Edwards that Radar and I know who are going through some tough times or illnesses.

    NMS:

YHC really had no plan.  I briefly thought about some track work – maybe The Suck, maybe The Cooper.  In the end, YHC wasn’t feeling like that much running this morning.  Had a case of the Wilson’s!  Instead, we stuck close to BWES and stuck together.  Almost a ground and pound but we got a little running in there for some cardio…or for some relief from merkins and monkey humpers.  No doubt the school cameras got their fill of grown men doing monkey humpers and APDs.  Yep, we are on a list somewhere.

By my count, we did 75 merkins in the tour of the Doors.  Another 20 in COP and 10 in the ROF – so that is 105 plus however many you did individually during the Triple Check.

YHC is heading out of town to take the kids to Disney for the week.  I hope everyone has a great week and a wonderful Thanksgiving…and hopefully TYA gets some dry weather to drain the moat in my backyard!!  The next time YHC posts in the gloom will be Monday, November 26 – YHC’s 40th birthday.  YHC will be spending time this week looking for an interesting loop to run 40 times for River Run…be ready!

See you fellas in a week and without any more HATE.  Happy Thanksgiving men!
