Mosey to field for disclaimer and no COP.

    Mosey to tennis courts.

Wilt Chamberlains – run length of all four tennis courts and perform 100 LBCs.  Run back for 100 squats.  Run back for 100 flutterkicks (2 count).  Run back for 100 lunges (50 each leg)

Merkin Ladder-perform 10 merkins and run length of all 4 tennis courts to perform 9 merkins.  Repeato until PAX reaches 1 merkin.

Run to field for Tunnel of Love until audibled due to time.  Mosey back tot he flag for 90 seconds of APDs and Freddie Mercuries.

Numberama, Namearama, and YHC took us out with a quick prayer.

NMS: Not much mumblechatter this morning.  During the Wilt Chamberlains, a broom was passed down the line while everybody was doing the LBCs.  Not sure where the broom came from but it was pretty funny.  As we lined up on the field for TOL, Bleeder asked YHC if YHC saw the Field Closed sign.  YHC replied what sign and he pointed out the sign that was right in front of the PAX.  It was dark.  During the COT, YHC mentioned the many blessing all of us have in our lives.  The verse of the day on my Bible app today reads:

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.  James 1:17

Announcements-Wanna play Disc Golf-See LR.  Opus M is having surgery, throw some prayers his family’s way.

NMS: As YHC was watching the CFP Championship game last night, YHC realized YHC did not have a plan this morning.  SO YHC showed up to the AO Swirly Early and rucked for 30 minutes to think of what kind of beatdown YHC would deliver.  As we finished the PAX moseying as group with burpees, YHC realized YHC had completed the palnned exercises.  YHC then remembered that Bulkhead mentioned during the running that he needed to increase his cardio work.  All you had to do was ask.  Your welcome for the 4 corners.  It was great having the PAX stay together for some mumbelchatter about various items.  LR had a a Jeep that he spent more to repair in the first year than he paid for the vehicle was how we started the morning and it went from there.  Great work by the PAX this morning.  It was a pleasure and an honor to lead this morning.

14 F3RVA regulars and 1 visitor from the South entered the morning gloom for a beatdown in perfect weather.  It went something like this:

Ascending-1 incline merkin on 1st step. 2 on second step all the way to the top.

Descending-18 dips on top step and decrease by one rep all the way to the bottom.

Pax lined up BTTW on amphitheater stage for Chicken Pecker Line of Fire.  1st pax performs 3 Chicken Peckers and passes along to next Pax until all Pax have completed 3 Chicken Peckers or until all of the blood in your body is in your head and you pass out.

Mosey back to Shovel Flag (Yes LabRat I remembered my Flag and now you have made the BB)

Numberama, Namearama, and YHC took us out.

NMS : YHCs Qs are usually a little more run oriented, but YHC wanted to mix it up a little today.  The Quaterpounder was just what the PAX needed to get the blood moving for the main attraction of the day. ARMS.  The entire PAX crushed the Rusty Cage exercises and great attention to form was displayed in the amphitheater.  Note to the PAX – Chicken Peckers after 171 incline merkins and 171 dips will cause complete failure of arms and shoulders.  Great job by all this morning.

As always, it is an honor to be associated with the men of F3RVA.  Thanks for letting me lead today.

Welcome Grady.  Please join us anytime you are in town.

NMS: Last year on what would have been my father’s 81st BDAY, YHC introduced The Hard Way to the F3RVA PAX.  The Hard Way is a Thank You from my father for F3RVA honoring him at all the workouts the day after is death.  The Hard Way is also a way for YHC to say Thank You to the F3RVA PAX for the friendship, fellowship and support during the time YHC was dealing with my father’s Alzheimer’s and death.  As 7-11 said during the prayer, it is important for us to not seek the easy way of accomplishing a task.  We need to approach our lives knowing that there is only The Right Way regarding our families, parenting, jobs, friendships, etc.  I still draw much inspiration from my father, and last year I posted the eulogy I wrote and delivered at my father’s funeral.  Sometimes, when I am having a bad day or face a tough decision, I re-read The Hard Way to settle my thoughts and realize the correct path to take.  See below.

    Happy Birthday POP.

    Circle K

    The Hard Way

Pop, Dad, Coach, Friend, Cadet, Marine.  These are just some of the names Dad answered too.  The operative word here is “Answer”.  Every time and for any reason, Dad would always answer a question or address a need.  Sometimes, you might not have liked the answer you received, just ask some of the umpires during his time coaching or I can certainly attest to not liking some of his answers to my questions.

Everybody knows that Dad had his “own” way of doing things.  His “own” way was very particular and structured.  Some people may have the idea that Dad was stubborn or bull-headed.  Just like the rest of us, Dad may have been a little stubborn, but when it came to accomplishing a task, Dad knew only “The Hard Way”.

Let me tell you a little about “The Hard Way”.  If Dad identified a task, or if a task was assigned to him, Dad would always approach a task the same structured way:

    • Every task was treated with the utmost seriousness. No matter how small or large the task.  Each task was tackled with complete Commitment.
    • The accomplishment of every task started with precision planning. This included what materials were needed and who was responsible for completing the necessary steps.  The plan was always adaptable depending on the situations that would develop during the course of the plan.
    • Carrying out the aforementioned plan was always performed with maximum effort. Half-hearted effort was not tolerated.
    • Upon successful completion of the task, Dad displayed a humble pride. Dad never boasted of his accomplishments.
    • On occasion, Dad would not complete a task successfully. While that was not part of the plan, Dad would always learn from his mistakes and try to ensure that others would learn from his mistakes as well.

While I could further describe “The Hard Way”, I think everybody gets the picture that “The Hard Way” could also be described as “The Right Way”.

Now that I have described “The Hard Way” a little, where did Dad learn “The Hard Way”?  Dad learned “The Hard Way” partly from the era he was born into and “The Hard Way” was definitely instilled in him at an early age through his family.  But Dad was absolutely exposed to the principles of “The Hard Way” in a formal fashion at The OLD John Marshall High School.  It was here as a member of the Cadet Corps, Company ‘F’, that he was enveloped in a setting that espoused, expected and demanded attributes such as : Duty, Honor, Country.  The young men of The Cadet Corp are expected to learn and incorporate attributes such as these in their teenage years.  A perfect illustration of what Dad learned as a member of the Cadet Corp is contained in the words of The Cadet Prayer.  A portion of The Cadet Prayer contains the following phrase:

“…Encourage us in our endeavor to live above the common level of life.  Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never be content with a half-truth when the whole can be won…”

After high school, Dad enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  It was here “The Hard Way” was literally drilled into every fiber of his being.  While in the Marine Corps, the following values were ingrained into Dad’s “The Hard Way”:

    • Honor This is the bedrock of our character. It is the quality that empowers Marines to exemplify the ultimate in ethical and moral behavior: to never lie, cheat, or steal; to abide by an uncompromising code of integrity; to respect human dignity; and to have respect and concern for each other. It represents the maturity, dedication, trust, and dependability that commit Marines to act responsibly, be accountable for their actions, fulfill their obligations, and hold others accountable for their actions.
    • CourageThe heart of our Core Values, courage is the mental, moral, and physical strength ingrained in Marines that sees them through the challenges of combat and the mastery of fear, and to do what is right, to adhere to a higher standard of personal conduct, to lead by example, and to make tough decisions under stress and pressure. It is the inner strength that enables a Marine to take that extra step.
    • Commitment This is the spirit of determination and dedication within members of a force of arms that leads to professionalism and mastery of the art of war. It promotes the highest order of discipline for unit and self and is the ingredient that instills dedication to Corps and country 24 hours a day, pride, concern for others, and an unrelenting determination to achieve a standard of excellence in every endeavor. Commitment is the value that establishes the Marine as the warrior and citizen others strive to emulate.

The integral part of the Marine Corps Values is that each and every Marine is expected to possess these values.  Not for the benefit of the individual Marine, but for the betterment of the Corps as a whole.

After Dad’s active duty service to our country, Dad continued serving through the Marine Corps Reserve.  In addition to that, Dad did what was expected of a Marine, he gave “The Hard Way” away to those he associated with on a daily basis.  How did Dad give “The Hard Way” away?  By raising Michele and I in a caring, loving and demanding fashion.  By mentoring countless numbers of youngsters through coaching baseball and football in a manner that pushed us to our limits, all while teaching us valuable life lessons along the way.  By exhibiting dedication to his family and showing others the definition of support, as his wife battled cancer.  By demonstrating loyalty and adaptability by working for the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond for 37 years.  I could continue for hours about how Dad exposed others to “The Hard Way”.

It has been said that I am as strong-willed as Dad.  It took me many years into adulthood to realize that “The Hard Way” really is “The Right Way”.  In closing, I would like to share an anecdotal story.  Occasionally, I may make a smart alleck comment to Kay or I may act with a mannerism that resembles Dad.  Kay usually responds with “that sounds exactly like something your father would say” or “you are acting exactly like your father”.  May standard response is always the same and consists of two simple words : THANK YOU.

  • Wife’s D@#$ Dog

Eight men cut through the tropical humidity for a beat down that went something like this:

Mosey to the new service road for Invisible Jumpropes, Lunge to first speed bump for LBCS, bear crawl to next speed bump for Squats, lunge halfway to next speedbump and bear crawl to next speedbump.  Mosey to elementary school bus loop for Dora.  Both partner perform the exercises and then both run the bus loop together.  Exercises included 100 merkins, 200 LBCs, and 300 squats.  Mosey to the playground fence to look for kick balls that the kids have kicked over (Helix’s M request).  Did not see any kick balls over fence and determined this may be an opportunity better served to complete in daylight hours.  Mosey to front of elementary school for ascending curb crawls up to 5.  Mosey to track for four corners, 10 WWII, 20 Freddie Mercuries, 30 Flutterkicks, and 40 APDs.  Mosey to middle school parking lot for touch a bus.  1,3,5 buses while partner holds six inches.  Mosey back to flag stopping twice for 5 burpees OYO.

Numberama, Namearama, YHC took us out.

NMS-LabRat must have gotten a good night’s sleep as he had the mumblechatter in full gear this morning.  The morning started with LR getting out of the car and the first thing he says “My wife’s d!@# dog” referring to the puppy great dane (that is now 100lbs) taking up the entire bed.  This led to the story of acquiring the dog and much discussion.  LR has a new favorite show-Jack Ryan.  Wheelie and LR both enjoy the show for entirely different reasons.  Great work by all this am.  Thanks for letting me lead

NMS:  Three weeks ago, YHC had the Q at WDOG, just returning from the beach.  Unfortunately, YHC overslept and YHC had to place a call to Swirly for some coverage. YHC is thankful for the PAX stepping in with a Hot Potato beatdown.  Today’s beatdown was what YHC had planned then and some of the exercises YHC gleaned from the 7 gymnasts and 1 field hockey player that YHC had the privilege of spending a week with while on vacation.  Stealing exercises from the 2.0s is not something new for YHC as YHC has introduced the PAX to Chicken Peckers (I still like saying Chicken Peckers), Self Destruction, etc.  Today the PAX was introduced to Fire Hydrants (think of a dog at a fire hydrant) and 4-3-2-1.  It is commonly thought that 2.0s learn from parents, but YHC is constantly learning from YHC’s 2.0s by observing how they interact with their friends and teammates, discussing what it important to them and asking questions about how they would approach situations.  As Swirly perfectly said this morning, this F3RVA group challenges us to be better men, but not be better for ourselves.  F3 is about being better for someone else such as your M, 2.0s, PAX members, co-workers and some stranger you may meet.  Sometimes being a better father includes learning something new from the next generation and I learned some new life lessons about myself from a great group of girls while on vacation.  YHC encourages all PAX members to go give your 2.0s a kiss, listen and observe your 2.0s, challenge yourself and your family, and you may become a better father.

As always, I consider it a privilege to lead the finest men in RVA.  Thanks for the opportunity.

    Announcements – Crickets.

NMS : YHC was enjoying a couple of chilly pops last night while watching the RedSox (best team in baseball) beat the Phillies in 13 innings and YHC was pondering about what to include this morning.  YHC made the decision that the PAX would complete Old Glory this am.  Well, when YHC arrived at the AO at 0510, YHC went to plant the flag and discovered YHC had taken his Shovel Flag out of the Jeepster over the weekend. Can’t do Old Glory without Old Glory. Therefore, YHC decided we would move to the other end of the spectrum and instead of completing an out of the box beatdown, the PAX would perform a lot of YHCs favorite exercises.  Mission accomplished.  The PAX pushed through the humidity this morning and crushed everything.  Quiet group this am until after the suicides.  The must have got the blood flowing as the conversation shifted to Yadsale’s high school football days.  Yardsale mentioned that all of the plays had to be run on the 1 count, as they always jumped offside if the play was called on the 2 count.  There were many barbs about the academic prowess of Yardsale’s teammates.  It was great to have Swiper join us Davillians as the Summer AO tour continues.

  • Guatemalan MumbleChatter

YHC woke up at 0520 to some extremely loud noise outside of window.  YHC knew he was going back to sleep so YHC woke TYA for a run.  We covered a little over 4 miles and experienced some of the craziest weather.

NMS : YHC still does not know what the loud sound was, but it made sure YHC was up for the last run of the week.  With the long work week complete, YHC and TYA knew we would not much time for another workout, with plans for criss-crossing Guatemala to explore ancient Mayan ruins, zip-lining, and travel home.  As we left our home base, the PAX took a left at the main road and continued uphill for a little more than 2 miles.  As we progressed up in elevation, we experienced running through the middle of many clouds, causing increased difficult visibility conditions.  Additionally, the temps dropped dramatically to the point where YHC wished he had gloves and long sleeves.  Upon seeing two crazy men, some of the villagers asked the PAX jokingly if we were hot, as the villagers were bundled up in winter coats and caps.  Guatemalan mumblechatter from the natives.  Not to be outdone in the mumblechatter, TYA responded in kind.  TYA responded in Spanish, so YHC assumes he was being a smart ass.

  • Super RollerCoaster

TYA, YHC and FNG (JoAnne) shook off a little cemento (that is not a misspelling) dust for a Wednesday evening hill run.  2.5 miles in one direction with multiple path and street changes.  Return same route with slight modifications due to some directional difficulties attributed to TYA.

Total Elevation Gain – Approximately 100 feet.

NMS – Upon arriving back at home base after a day TYA acting like he knows what he is doing when it comes to masonry and YHC acting like he knows what he is doing when it comes to speaking Spanish, YHC and TYA were sitting on the front steps covered in dirt, dust and mud.  YHC knows that TYA loves his Wed. Hill run, so YHC delcares we are going for a run.  YHC informs TYA that we are going to take the path across the street from the house and take a left up a mountain and see where we end up.  What could go wrong with a plan like that?  It turns out that we ran uphill for 2.5 miles.  Along the way, we traversed through a patch of pine trees that were completely engulfed in clouds.  Very eerie.  As the run progressed, the PAX got plenty of looks from the villagers, as YHC is sure they have not seen many white men or women run through their streets before.  The kids directed many snickers our way.  What is great about running in high elevation, is after you have climbed the elevation and head back down the mountain, your lungs clear themselves and your breathing is extremely clear and efficient.  YHC thought he was going to have to tackle TYA, as the man was a beast this afternoon pushing the limits on the inclines.  YHC threatened sever injury if TYA did not give YHC enough time to catch his breath and get rid of his light headedness after an especially difficult climb.  TYA obliged by giving YHC exactly 3 seconds.  A#$&^%.  All in all, it was a great run and no better way to end of day of hard work than with a buddy and some fun.
