  • Slipping and Sliding

A PAX of three slid (literally) into the gloom and this is what we did:

20 LBCs OYO to wait for Phonics.  Mosey to Chickahominy MS parking lot for Invisible Jumpropes, merkins, LBCs, and DQs all IC.

Mosey to Cool Spring ES bus loop for Dora 1,2,3.  100 merkins, 200 squats and 300 LBCs as a team.

Mosey to middle school track area for Jacobs Ladder.  Run to other side and perform 7 LBCs and run back to perform 1 WWII situp.  Repeato until 1 LBCs and 7 WWII situps.

Repeat Jacobs Ladder with the exercies Squats and Lt Dans.

Mosey back to flag.  Numberama, Namearama, YHC took us out with a quick prayer.

NMS: YHC was sitting in the parking lot at 0525 by himself this morning.  This is a rare occurence as YHC is usually one of the last PAX to arrive.  At 0528, Opus slides into the parking lot, so YHC does not have to count IC to himself.  With the black ice and last night’s college national championship game, many PAX chose to stay off the roads and nestle in the fartsack.  Phonics arrived right on time (for Phonics) and we tried our best to mosey on the icy sidewalks.  YHC anticipated the fields were going to be a sloppy mess and the original plan was to stay on the sidewalks and parking lots.  Running on the fields provided much more traction than the pavement.  Glad everybody stayed safe and avoided any injuries.

Enjoyed the company of Opus and Phonics.

  • Quarter Pounder with LBCs please (and a side of Chicken Peckers)

16 F3RVA regulars left the comfort of a warm home to push themselves in 70 and sunny weather.  This is what we accomplished:

Mosey to first circle for COP.  Exercises included Invisible Jumpropes, DQs, LBCs, and Copperhead Squats all IC.

Mosey to Carillon field for the Quarter Pounder.  Run to 25 yd line for 25 merkins.  Run Backwards to the start line.  Run to 50 yd line for 50 squats.  Run backwards to the start line.  Run to 75 yd line for 75 2-count Mountain Climbers.  Run backwards to start line.  Run to 100 yd line for 100 LBCs.  Run backwards to start line.

Quarter Pounder on steroids.  Run to 25 yd line for 25 merkins.  Run backwards to start line.  Run to 50 for 50 squats, stopping at 25 yd line for 25 merkins.  Run backwards to start line.  Run to 75 yd line for 75 mountain climbers stopping at the 25 for 25 merkins and at the 50 for 50 squats.  Run backwards to the start line.  Run to the 100 yd line for 100 LBCs stopping at the 25 yd line for 25 merkins, at the 50 yd line for 50 squats and at the 75 yd line for 75 mountain climbers.  Run backwards to the start line.

Mosey to the outdoor stage for Touch a Tree.  Partner up.  One partner performs Chicken Peckers while the other partner runs to touch 3 trees.  Switch.  Repeato for 6 trees and 9 trees.

Mosey back to the first circle for LBCs Ring of Fire.  Each PAX perform 20 LBCs while the remainder of the PAX holds feet at six inches.  Repeato until all PAX has completed their 20 LBCs.

Mosey back to flag.  Numberama, Namearama.  YHC took us out with thanks for the warmth of our houses, while there are many in out communities, nation and the world who go to sleep in the cold every day.

Announcements – Too cold for announcements.

NMS : More PAX than degrees again this morning for F3RVA.  YHCs thought is that if you are going to post in the cold, you better be moving the entire time to build up some heat.  For this reason, we had an abbreviated COP and got straight to work running the field.  Not much mumble chatter this morning due to everyones teeth chattering maybe.  You would not have been able to understand anything Offshore said anyway as he donned the ski mask.  Dude sounded like Mushmouth or Charlie Browns teacher during Namearama, but his face was warm.  Flipper took a tumble during one of the backward runs, but dude made it look graceful as he completed a backwards roll (sort of) and popped right back up to continue.  BTW, that is a long way to run backwards.  Chicken Peckers during the Touch a Tree might have been a bit much, but the PAX pushed through with much groaning.  A small key fiasco averted as Pucker somehow lost his key out of pocket and then more amazingly found it around the AO.  390 LBCs for the morning (Good start for the day)

Side Note : TYA is looking to Ice Skate this weekend.  Somebody tell him this is not Boston and get him a life jacket.

  • Merry Christmas – The Hard Way

38 redwoods decided to start Christmas weekend in the best fashion.  This is what we accomplished before most people had even started their day:

Begin in Plank position.  46 merkins for YHC’s M’s (Mrs. Kay) 46 BDAY.  I also hear that it is Gumbo’s M’s BDAY.  Happy Birthday Mrs. Gumbo.

    Run 1 mile.

The Hard Way-Combination of Old Glory, Beast and Lucky Horseshoe.

Round 1- Run length of Carillon field stopping at 25, 50 and 75 yd line.  Perform 6 merkins at each stop.  Complete length of field and stop at same spots to perform the same exercises.

Round 2- Repeato with Merkins and Squats.

Round 3 – Repeato with Merkins, Squats and Carolina Dry Docks

Round 4 – Repeato with Merkins, Squats, Carolina Dry Docks and Lunges.

Round 5 – Repeato with Merkins, Squats, Carolina Dry Dock, Lunges and WWII situps.

Round 6 – Repeato with Merkins, Squats, Carolina Dry Docks, Lunges, WWii situps, and Burpees.

    Run 1 mile.

Numberama, Namearama, we closed with a Christmas Carol.

    Announcements – Merry Christmas

NMS : YHC got the word earlier in the week that Wilson wanted something special for his out of town guests.  Mission Accomplished.  The Hard Way is a workout that YHC devised to honor F3RVA for the respect everyone paid to him the day after his death this past summer.  This workout is a serious beatdown that requires the entire PAX to push one another to completion.  It was great to start Christmas weekend with 37 other F3 brothers and the mumble chatter was on full display.  DK had the one liners at the ready, LabRat was his usual Chatty Cathy and Rosie knew the Burpees are the only way the finish The Hard Way.

  • DJ Ground and Pound

Nine F3RVA regulars made the decision to enter the gloom and make themselves better.  Weather was a balmly 45 degrees (70 and sunny) and this is what we did:

Mosey to center of AHS parking lot for COP.  Invisible Jumpropes, SSHx1(for THE Carpenter), DQs, Hillbillies all IC.

Mosey to curb for Step-up Timers.  1 minute of quick feet step-ups followed by 30 seconds rest.  Repeato x 5 with decreasing amount of recovery time.

Mosey to edge of parking spaces for some bear crawls and lunges.  At first parking space, perform 10 WWII situps and bear crawl 2 parking spaces to perform 10 American Hammers, Lunge two parking spaces and repeat until PAX has crossed entire parking lot.

Mosey to opposite edge of parking lot for Love Hill without the hill.  PAX partner up.  One partner perform exercises across parking lot while other partner runs to opposite side and back to partner.  Switch until team has crossed the entire parking lot.  Exercises included lunges, Broad Jump Burpees, and Crabwalk.

Mosey to side of school building for Chickerpecker Ring of Fire.  All PAX assume BTTW position.  First PAX member performs 5 chickenpeckers, then next PAX member performs 5 chickenpeckers until all PAX have completed.

Mosey past YHCs Jeepster to retrieve phone and bluetooth speaker and circle up in center of AHS parking lot.

Sally – To the song Bring Sally Up, PAX performs squats.  When the words Bring Sally Down are heard, PAX performs squats and holds in down position (Helix form) and PAX brings the squat up to Al Gore when they hear Bring Sally Up.

Roxanne – PAX on six with feet at six inches.  Everytime the name Roxanne is sung, PAX performs LBCs x Q counts.

Thunderstruck – Everytime PAX hears Thunder, PAX performs merkins and holds plank.

    Length of parking lot suicide.

    30 seconds of Burpees.

Numberama, Namearama, YHC took us out with a prayer.

NMS : YHC is usually known for including a lot of running during his Qs, but YHC decided to change it up a little.  Ground and pound it was as the PAX never left the AHS parking lot, except for a few feet for the Chickenpecker Ring of Fire.  Which, by the way, I still like saying Chickenpecker and the entire PAX crushed these, with only one of two members passing out after being upside down for that long.  The exercises to the songs were not new to the PAX, but I do not think we have ever included all of them in the same workout before.  What better way to liven up a ground and pound, (and get the day going), than to hear Thunderstruck at 6am.  Definitely got YHCs day off on the right foot.  Great job by the entire PAX this morning.  Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to lead.

  • Breaking Bread – Skins vs Cowboys

Two F3RVA regulars and YHCs M spent a Sunday evening in fellowship with some football fans.  YHC prepared enough lasagna, salad, and garlic bread to feed many.  LabRat provided some tea and we were ready to have a Sunday Dinner (my favorite meal of the week) with some new friends.  Unfortunately, LabRat has some issues at the house and could not attend but the tea was still delivered to YHC residence.  (Thanks LR).  As we arrived, we were informed there were not many guests at Breaking Bread this week, but the ones that were their were very appreciative of the food and fellowship.  As YHC walked in carrying food and drink, one of the guests was watching the Skins v Cowboys.  YHC was pleased to see this, as he would have somebody to converse with about football.  This particular guest was a joy to sit in front of the TV with, as he had a comment (mostly good) on every player for each team.  YHC asked him who is favorite team was and he proudly said the 49ers and immediately retreated to the 80s and 90s with Montana and Young at QB.  While a proud 49ers fan, he freely admitted the 2017 version of the 49ers has a lot to be desired, but hopeful for a successful rebuilding.  Winklevoss is a Rubiks Cube savant as he demonstrated to the guests multiple strategies for solving the puzzle.  The only way YHC could ever solve the challenge was to remove the stickers and place them were needed.  Great job Winklevoss.  YHC learned something very important during this dinner, YHCs M was in the kitchen with the Breaking Bread staff member helping to serve the food onto plates.  The entire time YHCs M and staff member were constantly talking.  On the ride home, YHC asked M what their conversation was about.  Turns out the staff member has lived an incredible life on both sides of the law.  Currently she holds three jobs (all involving social work) in which she helps many people including opiod addicts, prostitutes, and children.  The stories that were relayed to me were amazing.  What was more amazing was the amount of information YHCs M gathered in a short period of time.  What was even more amazing is the realization the impact that can be made on other peoples lives, when you have discovered your Purpose and you act accordingly.

  • Chicken Peckers

15 men entered the gloom and this is what happened when they got there:

    Started off with 25 merkins.

Mosey to second circle for COP.  Exercises included Invisible Jumprope, DQs, and Armcircles all IC.

Mosey to far side of field to retrieve Holland Family Chiropractic Success Donut from trailer.  Circle up around Success Donut to bear crawl to center of circle and perform 5 Booyah merkins.  Crawl bear back out to perimeter.  Repeat x 3.

PAX splits in half and flips tire from line to line.  While 1 PAX flips tire, the rest of the PAX performs called exercises.  Exercises included were merkins, LBCs, WWII situps, Flutterkicks, Freddie Mercuries, and other stuff.

Holland Family Chiropractic Success Donut Beast – Two PAX carries tire stopping at 25, 50, 75 yard line to switch arms.  Rest of PAX runs the length of the field stopping at same points to perform called exercises.  Repeato until all PAX have carried tire.  Exercises included – merkins, burpees, WWII situps, LBCs, squats, sprints and other stuff.

Mosey to stage for Chicken Peckers x 15 IC.

Mosey to Rusty Cage for 3 sets of pullups x5 and jerkins x 5.

    Mosey back to VSF.

Numberama, Namearama, YHC took us out with a prayer thanking God for the strength He gives us and to use that strength throughout the day.

Breaking Bread this Sunday 10/29/2017 – See Circle K for details.

Moleskin – YHC was a little foggy in the brain this morning after staying up way too late watching the World Series.  With that in mind, YHC was happy to make it to the start just in time to work up a sweat and clear the cobwebs.  The Holland Family Chiropractic Success Donut has not made an appearance in a while and the PAX greeted the Success Donut with great enthusiasm.  After flipping and carrying the Success Donut, the Chicken Peckers (I just like saying that) were a great success.  The Chicken Peckers were a suggestion from my gymnast daughters and they were a hit.  (It is amazing to watch gymnasts perform Chicken Peckers without the assistance of a wall.  The original plan for this morning involved an entire segment devoted to Chicken Peckers, but the Carillon walls were fenced off and there just was not enough room for the entire PAX.  The Chicken Peckers will definitely make a return.  Great job by the entire PAX this morning.  Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to lead a great group of men.

  • The Hard Way

22 men escaped the fart sack  to gather at Mary Munford for a beatdown.  Pre-beatdown, YHC informed the PAX there would be no COP.  Little did the PAX know, we were about to conquer The Hard Way.

The Hard Way (combination of Old Glory, a Beast and The Luck Horseshoe)

PAX ran a mile.  (Followed by a quick disclaimer and introduction to F3 for the FNGs)

PAX lined up on soccer field.  Run across the field stopping at the 25 yd line, 50 yd line and 75 yd line to perform six of the called exercises, run to other end line and return stopping at same spots to perform same exercises.  Round 1=PAX complete six merkins.  Round 2=PAX complete six merkins and six squats.  Round 3=Pax completes six merkins, six squats and six Scorpion Dry Docks.  Round 4=PAX completes six merkins, six squats, six Scorpion Dry Docks, and six WWII situps.  Round 5=Pax completes six merkins, six squats, six Scorpion Dry Docks, six WWII situps and six Lunges.  Round 6=Pax completes six merkins, six squats, six Scorpion Dry Docks, six WWII situps, six lunges and six BURPEES.

Mosey back to the VSF.  Numberama, Namearama, and YHC took us out with a quick prayer.

10.5.1936 is my father’s BDAY.  With his passing this past summer, the F3RVA PAX paid tribute to him the day after his passing at each AO across F3RVA.  The Hard Way is his way of saying Thank You.  The Hard Way was inspired by the eulogy that I wrote and delivered at his funeral.  (See below)  There are many times in life when we are tempted to take the easy path and not conquer the hard tasks we face.  That is another way of taking short cuts and not putting forth our best effort.  My father always challenged me to face the hard tasks to ensure the task was completed the RIGHT way.  This mornings beatdown was definitely a challenge and the PAX greeted the challenge with enthusiasm.  As YHC was catching his breath while chasing Rosie, YHC thinks most of the mumblechatter came from LabRat (imagine that) and Saab pertaining to brewing beer.  Tclaps to TYA, Bleeder and Swirly for running 3 miles pre-beatdown.  Great job by the entire PAX.

Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to lead this morning.  As always, YHC is honored to associate with the finest group of men in RVA.

    The Hard Way

Pop, Dad, Coach, Friend, Cadet, Marine.  These are just some of the names Dad answered too.  The operative word here is “Answer”.  Every time and for any reason, Dad would always answer a question or address a need.  Sometimes, you might not have liked the answer you received, just ask some of the umpires during his time coaching or I can certainly attest to not liking some of his answers to my questions.

Everybody knows that Dad had his “own” way of doing things.  His “own” way was very particular and structured.  Some people may have the idea that Dad was stubborn or bull-headed.  Just like the rest of us, Dad may have been a little stubborn, but when it came to accomplishing a task, Dad knew only “The Hard Way”.

Let me tell you a little about “The Hard Way”.  If Dad identified a task, or if a task was assigned to him, Dad would always approach a task the same structured way:

    • Every task was treated with the utmost seriousness. No matter how small or large the task.  Each task was tackled with complete Commitment.
    • The accomplishment of every task started with precision planning. This included what materials were needed and who was responsible for completing the necessary steps.  The plan was always adaptable depending on the situations that would develop during the course of the plan.
    • Carrying out the aforementioned plan was always performed with maximum effort. Half-hearted effort was not tolerated.
    • Upon successful completion of the task, Dad displayed a humble pride. Dad never boasted of his accomplishments.
    • On occasion, Dad would not complete a task successfully. While that was not part of the plan, Dad would always learn from his mistakes and try to ensure that others would learn from his mistakes as well.

While I could further describe “The Hard Way”, I think everybody gets the picture that “The Hard Way” could also be described as “The Right Way”.

Now that I have described “The Hard Way” a little, where did Dad learn “The Hard Way”?  Dad learned “The Hard Way” partly from the era he was born into and “The Hard Way” was definitely instilled in him at an early age through his family.  But Dad was absolutely exposed to the principles of “The Hard Way” in a formal fashion at The OLD John Marshall High School.  It was here as a member of the Cadet Corps, Company ‘F’, that he was enveloped in a setting that espoused, expected and demanded attributes such as : Duty, Honor, Country.  The young men of The Cadet Corp are expected to learn and incorporate attributes such as these in their teenage years.  A perfect illustration of what Dad learned as a member of the Cadet Corp is contained in the words of The Cadet Prayer.  A portion of The Cadet Prayer contains the following phrase:

“…Encourage us in our endeavor to live above the common level of life.  Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never be content with a half-truth when the whole can be won…”

After high school, Dad enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  It was here “The Hard Way” was literally drilled into every fiber of his being.  While in the Marine Corps, the following values were ingrained into Dad’s “The Hard Way”:

    • Honor This is the bedrock of our character. It is the quality that empowers Marines to exemplify the ultimate in ethical and moral behavior: to never lie, cheat, or steal; to abide by an uncompromising code of integrity; to respect human dignity; and to have respect and concern for each other. It represents the maturity, dedication, trust, and dependability that commit Marines to act responsibly, be accountable for their actions, fulfill their obligations, and hold others accountable for their actions.
    • CourageThe heart of our Core Values, courage is the mental, moral, and physical strength ingrained in Marines that sees them through the challenges of combat and the mastery of fear, and to do what is right, to adhere to a higher standard of personal conduct, to lead by example, and to make tough decisions under stress and pressure. It is the inner strength that enables a Marine to take that extra step.
    • Commitment This is the spirit of determination and dedication within members of a force of arms that leads to professionalism and mastery of the art of war. It promotes the highest order of discipline for unit and self and is the ingredient that instills dedication to Corps and country 24 hours a day, pride, concern for others, and an unrelenting determination to achieve a standard of excellence in every endeavor. Commitment is the value that establishes the Marine as the warrior and citizen others strive to emulate.

The integral part of the Marine Corps Values is that each and every Marine is expected to possess these values.  Not for the benefit of the individual Marine, but for the betterment of the Corps as a whole.

After Dad’s active duty service to our country, Dad continued serving through the Marine Corps Reserve.  In addition to that, Dad did what was expected of a Marine, he gave “The Hard Way” away to those he associated with on a daily basis.  How did Dad give “The Hard Way” away?  By raising Michele and I in a caring, loving and demanding fashion.  By mentoring countless numbers of youngsters through coaching baseball and football in a manner that pushed us to our limits, all while teaching us valuable life lessons along the way.  By exhibiting dedication to his family and showing others the definition of support, as his wife battled cancer.  By demonstrating loyalty and adaptability by working for the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond for 37 years.  I could continue for hours about how Dad exposed others to “The Hard Way”.

It has been said that I am as strong-willed as Dad.  It took me many years into adulthood to realize that “The Hard Way” really is “The Right Way”.  In closing, I would like to share an anecdotal story.  Occasionally, I may make a smart alleck comment to Kay or I may act with a mannerism that resembles Dad.  Kay usually responds with “that sounds exactly like something your father would say” or “you are acting exactly like your father”.  May standard response is always the same and consists of two simple words : THANK YOU.

  • It’s Not About You

12 F3RVA regulars and 1 FNG embraced the gloom this morning at DaVille and this is what we did:

Mosey all of 10 feet to YHCs car to start the beatdown watching and listening to Inky Johnson’s motivational speech entitled “It’s Not About You”.  During the workout, YHC called out different exercises that applied to Inky’s life situation.  Exercises included:

Run to light pole and back – Inky and his cousins run to and from light poles when they were kids to train.

2 merkins – Inky lived in a 2 bedroom house.

14 Burpees – Inky had 14 people living in the 2 bedroom house.

7 WWII situps – Inky was 7 years old when he would run sprints after practice to the lights of his mother’s car.

15 LBCs-Inky was 15 years old when he made the decision to stay at the worst performing high school in GA to prove to his cousins they could graduate from the same school and make it to college.

Mosey to soccer field for The Michigan.

10 – 100 yd sprints, 8 – 80 yd sprints – 6 60 yd sprints, 4 – 40 yd sprints, 2 – 20 yd sprints, 1 – 10 yd sprints.  YHC broke the sprints up with some exercises to catch our breath.  Exercises included flutter kicks, LBCs, Monkey Humpers, Merkins.

Mosey back to flag for 30 seconds on Mary.  Exercises included American Hammers.

Numberama, Namearama, YHC took us out with a prayer.

Moleskin : Swirly sent YHC the Inky Johnson video last week and what a better way to get the blood pumping for a beatdown.  If you have not seen the video, I would highly recommend searching for Inky Johnson on Google to learn a little more about him.  At 525am, YHC noticed a train was traveling by Atlee High School and then everyone noticed a line a headlights was filing into the parking lot at exactly 528am.  Turns out that many of the PAX got caught at the train crossing, but everybody made it on time.  After watching the video, the entire PAX was fired up and totally crushed The Michigan.  Not much mumblechatter this morning, as most of the PAX was catching their breath until we got back to the shovel flag.

The message this morning is “It’s not about you”.  As a core principle of F3 is placing yourself Third, YHC thought Inky was a great avenue to stress this point.  The challenge from this morning’s workout is minimal to the challenges faced by so many in our society, even here locally in our communities.  The time is now for each member of the F3RVA pax to make a difference in somebody’s life today.

Thanks for letting me lead the morning.  Welcome to Pitbull, who finally felt the constant EHing pressure from many to post to a workout.  Looking forward to having at many more in the future.

    Mosey to bench at track for 4 corners. Corner 1=dips x 10.  Corner 2=LBCsx10.  Corner 3=Squatsx10.  Corner 4=WWII situps x10.  Repeato x 3.

Mosey to BBALL courts.  Lunge 1 side, bear crawl side 2, lunge side 3, bear crawl side 4.  Repeato x 3.

Moleskin-With two guys that have known each other for 10 plus years, YHC decided on a low impact workout in order to catch up.  Scully and YHC solved all the worlds problems as the discussion topics of the morning were very diverse.  It was great to spend some time in the gloom with a fellow F3 brother.  Great work Scully.

  • Preblast (Final)-Reesestrong 5K

This Saturday, 9.16.2017, is the Reesestrong 5K organized by our very own Phonics.  This is a great race and benefits a great cause, Childhood Cancers.  F3RVA set a goal of fielding the largest team in the 2017 event.  When a challenge is thrown down, F3RVA responds.  As of this morning, F3RVA is the largest team with 59 members.  It is still not too late to register.  Online registration ends at 1159pm tonight, but I am sure Phonics will still take your money the morning of race day.  This is a race for every level of participant.  You can run or walk or you can participate in the 5K The Hard Way (25 merkins and 25 squats every 5 minutes.)  As this is a very family friendly event, there are 2 kids runs as well.  As you can see, there is something for everybody to do at this race.  Kids races start around 830am and the 5K starts at 855am.

After the race, the plan is for everybody to Mosey to YHCs house for some good eats and coldbeer.  The menu will include: Crabs, Oysters, Shrimp, Hotdogs, Lab Rats BBQ, Coleslaw, Baked Beans, Water, Gatorade and COLDBEER.  If you make a side dish that you think everybody would enjoy, feel free to bring to share.

The only thing I would definitely bring is a folding camp chairs, as I will not have enough for everybody.

YHC will also have cornhole (for TYA), Badminton (for the kids), and footballs to toss around (Swirly). YHC will also have a couple of TVs setup to watch college football. This is a great way to experience 2ndF with our F3 brothers families.  Even you are not available to run the race, plan on stopping by sometime (in between kids athletic events) during the afternoon.  YHC will have the food ready sometime around noon and then we can hang out the rest of the afternoon.
