  • An even dozen run to Cary Street Road

A dozen strong and fleet posted on a Tuesday morning at U of R.  Mid 70’s , medium humidity…not terrible for an August morning in Richmond.

    The Thang:

Run past the commons, take a left and follow the road to the main UR entrance.  Take a right onto Boatwright, right onto Three Chopt access road,  left on Grove.  4 milers turn around at Rosslyn Rd.  5 milers take a right on Oak and run to intersection of Oak and Cary (Street Road) and turn around, 6 milers continue on to Hillcrest, run the Hillcrest loop and then everyone reconvene at the lake.

    NMM:

Ok, no real reason for this rant, but what the hell.  What is it with Richmond and its naming of Roads.  The actual name of the roads are fine.  Cary, Broad, Hull, all acceptable names for roads.  But the Richmonders could not just leave well enough alone. For some unknown reason, they could not settle on whether it was a street, road, boulevard, lane, avenue, or whatever.  So, they picked two and called them Street Roads.  WTF is a “street road”.  You only get to choose one.  No cheating and picking two, it makes no sense  What are we going to have next, a “lane boulevard road”.  Honestly, there is absolutely no justification for this.  It was probably started by the same people who name their daughter with the same name as the mother or the people that give their children two first name ala Mary Dutton.  Mary and Dutton are two separate names.  You can’t just add them together and make one name out of it. Lets get back to reality folks.

Renaldo joined us for the Tuesday run for the first time.  Renaldo is joining us of the BRR and it was good to have him out there today.  He had a little bit of a problem finding the starting point (he was probably on boatwright ave road instead of boatwright road).  Lug walked him into the lake area and although he was a few minutes late, the regulars waited for him to start.

Theta joined us for the beginning of the run and was absent at the end.  When she was less than a mile from her house, she decided to continue on and go home.   Honeydo took the opposite approach and ran to and from the AO this morning.

  • Back to the gloom for BRR training

Four BRR runners emerged in the gloom for a Sunday trail run.

    The Thang:

Southside to T. Pottersfield bridge to northside and back to the pump house.  A little over 7 miles for the loop.

    NMM:

Weather was sticky but not overwhelming the morning.  Temps in the mid to high 70’s to start and given that the days highs were only in the low 90’s things were tolerable.  Even so, most runners ended the run shirtless (Oh, the humanity).  Shakedown lost his glasses somewhere after the finish of the run.  He was explaining this to us at the second F at Ellwoods, then he reached down to his shorts and found the glass tucked in his waist band.  After he discovered them missing when he was on his way to ell woods, he returned to the pump house to see if he could find them….Glad he found them, but pretty funny.

Once a month there is a group that runs from the pump house at 8am.  For some reason, they guy who leads the run finds it necessary to brink his gas powered blower to the parking lot and blow the rocks.  It honestly does not seem to accomplish anything, but he brings it everytime.  One thing he does accomplish each time is to completely piss off Lab Rat.  For some reason, this one mans obsession becomes another mans pet peeve.  I am no Freud, but Id love to find out what happened to lab rat as a child that caused this reaction.

Nice smooth run this morning for YHC and all others.  Nothing really of note on the trails.  Looking forward to the weather turning and the humidity leaving.

  • Wilson’s Wife Approved Workout

7 stalwarts emerged from the fartsack despite being out of town and having had many col-beers the night before.

    The Thang:

Run to south paddock around the parking lot, back down the main road, past the hotel, up the hill near the go kart track, back to the main road, right to the north paddock around the parking lot, and back to the Villas.

    NMM:

Ok, Wilson, we hear you, big data is important and we don’t want folks posting ficticiouos backblasts to manipulate the data.  Ultimately, Splinter is the boss when it comes to declaring what is a valid workout and what is not.  If he approves it, it counts, if he doesn’t, it is out.  He is the one judge of this and he can over rule anyone on this issue (even if he uses it to his advantage…membership has its privileges) However, corporate has outlined a few rules of thumb for the PAX.  A backblast is valid if 1) there are more than 2 folks out of town together and they put in a normal F3 workout.  It has got to be as close to a regular workout as possible and just doing it yourself doesn’t necessarily count (see rule 2).  2) You are out of town and you post by yourself for an F3 type of workout (yes, a run of 45 minutes or more counts).  If you are by yourself, you are allowed one post per trip.  You can’t post every day and get credit for the workout  Just once per trip.  3) Corporate is good with you getting credit for a workout when you post at another F3 workout in another region.  Its a little tougher with the split websites now, but I am sure the PAX will figure things out.

Back to the workout at Virginia International Raceway.  A bunch of us did the route outlined above (Bleeder, TYA, Lab Rat).  Swirly did a majority of the route, but forgot one part so added a few extra hills at the end.  Lug nut posted early and ran a modified route.  Circle K opted for the 4+ mile route, preserving his body for the BRR and Saab did a fast walk while he is rehabbing his knee.

I am amazed at guys who can drink more than 3 beers and still get up and post for the workout in the morning.  TYA has no capacity to pull this off and seeing guys be a little tipsy the night before, post and kill the run is insane.  I honestly don’t know whether to be amazed or horrified.

  • Zero Miles on the odometer

17 Studs emerged from the fartsack into the gloom for a morning beatdown.

    The Thang:

Mosey to other side of parking lot for COP.  SSH x 28, LBC x20, Superman (thanks to Saab), Don Quixote x 10. Mosey to curb (5 feet).  Curb crawls ascending and descending to 9.  Labradors with merkins, copper head squats, side straddle hops, and WWII setups, Lindsays with dips (your welcome Hardwood) and LT. Dan’s. Mosey back to the flag (15 feet) for 3 minutes of mary, flutter kicks x28, rosalitas x 20 and american hammers x 15.  COT and out.

    NMM:

YHC had two plans today.  One with a lot of running, the other with no running at all.  In the end, we chose the one with no running at all.  My guess is that we had less than a 1/10 of a mile today.  A very Saab friendly workout.  Some were happy about the lack of running, others not so much.  One PAX member who was disappointed with the lack of running opted to run his own workout and went for a run while the rest of us stayed with the ground and pound.

DK tried to pay YHC back for his last Q.  When I started the initial COP,  DK began a conversation with me .  In my humble opinion, I did a great job or keeping cadence and having the conversation.   Lots of mumble chatter from the PAX today.  Hardywood particularly liked the dips on the curb. Not a ton of good feedback for the curb crawls.  Given the negative feedback, I decided to repeat the 9 on the way out up and on the way back down.

PAX was also not too happy doing the COP in the parking lot.  Since they liked the parking lot so much, I decided to do an early morning superman….a real crowd pleaser.

  • Running on a different kind of track

530 am arrived and the alarms started sounding.  4 Pax emerged from the gloom for a Friday morning run.

    The Thang:

Leave the condo at Virginia International Raceway and sneak into the track (around the maintenance building, through the fence and then to the track itself).  Take the raceway south course up the “S” curves (whatever the hell that is), around the oak tree (which no longer exists because if fell a few years), an onto the windy and hilly south course (with zero feet of non cambered road).  Repeato if desired.

    NMM:

Awesome to run on the race track.  Really cool experience having been on the track before as a passenger and as a driver (very bad driver, but driver still the same)  Explicit directions by Bleeder that if we heard a car to immediately exit the track…not mosey of the track, but get the hell off the track as soon as humanly possible.  Probably a good piece of advice given that the cars are hitting close to 150 MPH on parts of the track.

Had the opportunity later in the day to again experience being passenger on the track.  First with Swirly as the driver (in Big Blue) and then with Bleeder as driver (in a Porsche racing car).  Surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly I was more nervous (much more) in Big Blue going 90 MPH than in the Porsche going 145 MPH.  Truth be told, both the car and the experience level of the driver played an important role in my level of comfort.  Despite the nervousness, it was awesome to see Swirly drive over 20 MPH.  He really pushed himself out there today.  Swirly also rode in the car with Bleeder today.  Never saw a man so nervous at the start of something and so shell shocked afterwards.  Probably did not help that Bleeder took the car through he grass for a short stint on his last lap on the track.

Ok, finally, I have to go back to the alarms going off this morning.  I did not actually set an alarm to get up.  The condo has very limited bed space, so Bleeder and I shared a King sized bed.  Weird to rely on your bunk mate to get you up for an all male workout.  I was very nervous when Bleeder pulled the cucumber from the fridge pre-bedtime, and much more relaxed when he placed a pillow in the middle of the bed to separate his side from mine.  Swirly and Lug shared the downstairs suite, but fortunately had separate beds….

  • Hill run with friends

8 studs posted for a Wednesday evening jaunt on the hills

    The Thang:

3 big loops on Hillcrest, one counterclockwise, one clockwise and the last one counterclockwise.

    NMM

What a treat.  Dreamliner and Screen door made the trip down from Hampton Roads for the Wednesday evening run.  Awesome to see those guys and enjoy their company on a run.  As usual, Dreamliner, slayed the run, Screen door kept pace with him the entire way and was really pushing himself.  To make the trip from Hampton Roads to RVA for a workout shows what type of heart and dedication these guys have!!! Kudos to both of you.

Great having Wedding Singer out there as well.  Not sure if it was his first Wednesday hill run or not, but he did great.  His running prowess has grown immensely over the past 4 four months.  Nose to the grindstone baby!  I love it when someone commits to something and then throws themselves into it and gives it their all. It is truly inspiring!  From the minute he committed to the BRR (or more accurately when his M committed him to the BRR) he was all in.  No doubt he would be prepared or if he would go, he was ALL in.  Great job Singer.

2nd F was had at the end of the run.  One thing you can count on when Circle K posts for a post noon time workout is “cold beers” (and cold water for TYA).  Dude is consistent.  The Silver bullets were flowing post run and when YHC had to go pick his daughter up more than an hour after the workout, the second F (and cold beers) were still flowing strongly.

BRR is 5 weeks away….I am pumped.

  • The magnificent 7

Seven stalwart posted for a Wednesday evening hill run.

The Thang: 1 big loop, 1 small loop, 1 big loop and 1 small loop.

    NMM;

Weather was a bit better than normal July/August weather.  90 and humid, but thats the best you can get this time of year.

YHC got a new outfit.  Look for it at an AO near you.

  • Sweaty Sunday

3 Regulars posted for a Sunday run.  Weather was 70 and sunny, beautiful day for a run.

    The Thang:

North to south.  Over the T. Pottersfield bridge.

    NMM

Started the day a little bit early today at 6:30.  Not sure if anyone else posted at 7, but I did not see any F3 stickers on the cars and didn’t see any Pax on the trail.  Given the likely weather for the next month, I am going to make the call and move the Sunday run to 6:15 until after the BRR.

It was sticky out there today. YHC went through 2 full camelbacks full of water.  Thats 120 ounces of water in 7 miles.  Seems excessive, but I was not over hydrated afterwards.  YHC also started a new trend with the Sunday runners.  I started shirtless with a camelback and by the end of the run all of the other PAX members joined in.  Not a pretty sight, but a lot cooler.

  • Sunday morning 8

A group of 8 posted for a Sunday morning trail run.  Weather was sunny and 70, 0% humidity.  Perfect for a run.

    The Thang;

Over the bridge to Forrest Hill, Forrest Hill loop counter clockwise, then back to the buttermilk and back on the bridge.

    NMM:

Good to have Lockjaw back out there today.  He had been absent from the trail run for some time and he had a good showing on his first time back out.  Welcome to Longhorn (FNG Anna).  She is a Houston native and a non UT fan, hence the name.  She is a strong runner and had great showing for her first run.  She is a neighbor of Honeymoon, who also posted for the first time in a while.  He is starting to get ready of the BRR.  Oh, did I mention, that he is not running the BRR with the RVA PAX.  He is running with his NC PAX. I guess deep down, I cannot blame him, but the inner TYA has a little bit of resentment……maybe next year Honeymoon?

Helix is a machine.  He just keeps pumping in the miles.  I think we might need to rename him cyborg or something similar.  He is so consistent running its a pleasure to view.  Thanks to Saab and Lab Rat for running with me for a while.  YHC had a foot cramp/some plantar issues this morning.  After the first 2.5 miles the running was slow and painful.  Very frustrating.  Maybe the body needs to rest a few days.  Will play it by air.

Looking forward to the run next week.  Should be more and more BRR folks getting out there in future weeks.  74 days to game time.

Great 2nd F at Ellwoods afterwards.  Upchuck spoke about a potential new AO and outreach effort in Manchester.  YHC is fully on board and we are exploring ways to integrate this into the F3 RVA schedule.  Upchuck also loved TYA’s personal hygiene actions while at Ellwoods.  Inappropriate, maybe, did it make me more comfortable, absolutely.
