Looking forward to seeing everyone for the Memorial Day convergence!
Details below but first three requests!
Reach out to folks that you have not seen in a while and encourage them to come.
We would love to see the entire PAX for coffeteria afterwards.
If yer on IR, we want to see you. Let me know if you can help with coffee.
Bring your shovel flag.
Rucking starts at 0600.
Beatdown at 0700.
Best parking is at the lot next to the Belle Island access. If that fills up you might need to park up the hill a bit. Plan on extra time to get down there. Anyone coming in hot might be challenged to find parking depending on turnout.
Like in years past we will do an all PAX COP, split into groups, gather back together to move to the war memorial for a moment of silence to honor our fallen brothers, and then back down the hill for Namerama and Coffeeteria.
This is a great time to bring out FNGs so reach out to folks!
12 mighty warriors beat the fart sack for a nice spring run.
Of course, the Pax found their own routes. The published routes look line this
5mi Route4mi Route
YHC took us out Prayers for LabRat and Whitesnake’s pal Ryan
Memorial Dat convergence at Browns Island 7a.
NMS- Thanks for supporting 2 years at Currahee! Some pax are still pining for more sightings of local flora and fauna- saw some bunnies today but not much else. The Deep Run and Brookmont route is a decent test. Good hills along the way and always at the right time for training.
Thanks to all who came out!
Much has happened in the two years since we started this AO. The original Currahee post describes where we got the name:
The lore of the mountain run is “three miles up and three miles back” – much like F3 endeavor. The formation of this unit is pretty well documented in the Band of Brothers episode 1 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1245384/ .
For YHC, Band of Brothers Episode 1 is especially poignant because it illustrates a few things about what it takes to take a bunch of guys, in this case volunteers, and train them to be a cohesive fighting unit. In the show near the end, they give some credit to how CPT Sobel pushed them to come together. During my tenure on active duty, YHC had a commander like this and his replacement was able to take advantage of the dislike of the past commander and redirect it toward creating a solid fighting force.
We dont have anything like 3 miles up in Richmond, but the hills in the far west end can be inspiring. This is the first reason for the AO name.
The second reason is that Godwin’s mascot is Eagles. The “Screaming Eagles”, is featured in the logo of the 101 Airborne.
shoulder patch for 101st Infantry Division (Airborne)
Finally, the grand opening of the AO on May 8, 2020 is on the 75th anniversary of VE day – the end of WW2 in Europe. While the corona virus has damped our ability to remember and celebrate, we have a lot to be thankful for on this side of that most important day in our history.
19 homies made it to DogPile to start the weekend. On the drive in it was rainy – with puddles and rain soaked ground and cool temps: all combine to melt the muffin away. Like Ice Cube tells it: “I gotta say it was a good day.”
Disclaimer: rather explicit.
According to the creepy guy who even Upchuck didnt want to EH, it went somethin more or less like dis and like that and like dis en ah, its like dis.
5 burpee warmup. Mosey route to let the motivated PAX get a little wet.
Rusty cage. AMRAP pullup followed by Triple check: jerkins, Leg tucks, burpee at hydrant. Squats when maxed out
Ha penny stage: 11s + coupons. Climax Dips – three pulses at top, Curls.
Pipe loop triple check. WW2 & squats.
BTTF. YHC took us out. Prayers for WW2 vets – 78th anniversary of VE Day is tomorrow, Lab Rat, Try Hards sister, Upchucks family on the passing of his aunt. Bring one person out this year.
NMS – YHC is finishing up Ozark – one of the last season episodes features some old school rap, so its been on the playlist. Something about this tune reminds me of good times, maybe because it dropped senior year of university, and the year a few of our younger brothers first glimpsed the Sky Q, aka 30 years ago. Likely gonna squeeze a screening of Friday into this weekend.
Looks like US Army removed the leg tuck because a certain demographic was failing the original proposal: https://www.army.mil/acft/ Thats too bad, its a great exercise: https://youtu.be/1Ne6yv2yzRo. 20 is your max gents.
Coffeeteria was enlightening. Thanks all for the convo. If you are not paying attention to the economy and the implications for your long term finances, you are gonna get caught.
F1 Miami is tomorrow at 3:25p. Check it out. https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/formula-1-how-to-watch-the-miami-grand-prix-and-f1-racing-in-2022/

Bridge clown car June 4
NMS – Fun to be back out at GridIron. On the drive over from Dogpile, YHC realized that there are some other great Qs out there that have not signed up and decided on a hot potato. Thanks to the fellow Qs for jumping in. White Deer reminds us that while the Q is in charge he is also on a stage with a spotlight.
Coffeeteria makes YHC seem that some might be interested in a military history / movie watch night where we can go in knowing what we are talking about and avoid building up to a downer. Bottom line: War sucks – the aftermath sucks too. When nations policy goals conflict and diplomacy fails, war is the outcome. No soldier really wants it, and some end up being good at it… regardless, the goal of my military brethren is to make war violent at the precise point of most impact, and therefore quick so that more of the brethren can go back home. We are lucky here that so few of us have needed to be involved – its not like that around the world. This is made possible and we are kept safe by rough men and women “on the borders” that you may never know. If interested, YHC would be happy to get some other veterans together to share what those brave souls go through with those that want to know.
9 DogPile faithful gathered this morning to melt their winter muffin tops. According to Brutus who joined us for the COT, this is what went down:

9 made it out to Currahee for the first temperate run in a while. 5 milers did the Gayton ES route; right on Pump, left on Church, cut across Gayton, left on Kleindale, Right on Poplar Forest, Left on Ridgefield and return. 4 milers same route but from Church, Left on Copperas, Left on Ridgefield. 3 milers, from Church, left on John Rolfe. With two uphills at the end, this is a solid training route.
EF Hutton took us out.
NMS – Fudd got me out to Dogpile 5 years ago. This is after saying no multiple times to Toga, Flipper, and Splinter. What we do together is worth sharing. Keep working on folks and dont give up.
Imagine what would happen if we did 2 things:
Each one of us brought one person on each year.
And then, almost as importantly, as a PAX we made them feel so welcome that they stayed. ‘
>> Starting with YHC, that would be 32 across the last five years.
Twelve terrible thunderbeasts travelled to Timberwolf on a wonderful warming morning. According to that one teacher that always shows up early this is how it went down, more or less.
Mosey to COP all IC, all 4 count; 20x SSH, 10x DQ, 10s hang, 10x IW, 10x Merkin, 10x HRM, 10x Sky Reach Merkin, 11x HRM + Sky Reach Merkin (working title Shazam?), 10x ww2, 51x LBC, 5x Bohemian Rhapsody, 10x Freddie Mercury, Batwings: [20x Arm Circle, 20x reverso, Hands up, Hands down, 10x seal claps, 10x overhead claps, 10x arm circle], 10x APD, 10x Tuscaloosa Trailer Park Twister. 20 min elapsed.
Mosey to the front parking Longest 11s ever: Bro code style. Squats and WW2; 75m movement accomplished by alternating bearcrawl, Lunge, Bernies. Some Polar bears to spice it up but not over flavor. Broad jump burpee for last set until called. This one is hard enough that its tough to stick through the end and complete each exercise / movement properly. Its just elevens. Mosey BTTF.
YHC took us out. Prayers for LabRat and Try Hard. Bring more folks out.
NMS – Really good to be back at Timberwolf and seeing some folks I have not seen for a while. Yes PAX, YHC knows its a big AO, but staying local is all you need at times. Nice work for the runners at Roanoke.
Shazams are continuing to evolve and seem to be a crowd pleaser – this is definitely one that looks easy on paper.
Happy 21st anniversary to Orange Crush. Quite an accomplishment.
Announcements – Breaking bread sign up. Blood drive June 4 at Epiphany Lutheran in west end. FOB benefit
Seven swole studs braved the last cool bootcamp that always starts before anyone else, even if you are late. After some attempted Q disparaging that was handled quite well with appropriate levity, we got to work.
Mosey to COP all IC, all 4 count; 20x SSH, 10x DQ, 10x IW, 10x Merkin, 10x HRM, 10x Sky Reach Merkin, 10x HRM + Sky Reach Merkin, 10x ww2, 51 LBC, 10x Hello Dolly, 10x Rosalita, 5x Bohemian Rhapsody, 10x Freddie Mercury, 20x Arm Circle, 20x reverso, Hands up, Hands down, 10x seal claps, 10x overhead claps, 10x arm circle, 10x APD, 10x Tuscaloosa Trailer Park Twister. So out of shape YHC needed to run to catch breath.
5:20 Handshake arrives. First senior moment? No worries mate, there will be more.
Mosey to the south ridge rabbit warren. Longest 11s ever: Bro code. Squats and WW2; movement accomplished by alternating bearcrawl, Lunge, Bernies. Some Polar bears to spice it up but not over flavor. Broad jump burpee for last set until called. Mosey BTTF.
Handshake took us out. Prayers for LabRat and Try Hard.
Coffeeteria afterward.
NMS – Great to see the First Watch crew. Building up to YHC five year anniversary 4/22 and Earth Day. Sometimes not sure who really goes back and reads BB so YHCs normal method is to catch enough comments that PAX throughout the region build interest. “Guess you had to be there” is likely still the case, but what are you missing? Are we really missing the toothbrush story? YHC does not know.
Oversharing of the week goes the PAX member who will remain anonymous at this point. In brief, expected guests arrived 30 minutes early but were made to wait in the lobby until the previously scheduled meeting concluded discussion, the minutes reviewed, the action items assigned with names and dates, and handshakes finished. In other words, no Rodeo required. Yes Rodeo is a thing. YHC’s fraternity has a story about a similar event where the more confined space of a dorm room should have led to a proper rodeo, but Dr. Zog, our hero, simply waved howdy to the unexpected guest and the bronc continued to provide an epic ride. That’s how we got to know Tex and what is better is that she was cool with that appellation.
For a gold mine of words that could mean something else in the context in which they are used (at this point, Upchuck observes that optimal diction is euphemism) please see Rodeo Terms: Cowboys, Events & More (carodeo.com) – if you know what I mean.

16 west end giants braved the last cool day of spring to get a run in.
Saab said the Q can call this route anything he wants, so YHC presents “Saab’s weaving booties”. Why booties? We dont know. We do know Saab prefers weaving to knitting.
This is the route:

2 Warriors meet in the gloom for a Monday morning Daville to remind everyone else what respect can be all about. According to the couple walking laps in the back parkinglot with way too much seemingly lively and boisterous discussion to be married (to each other), here is how it went down:
Mosey to COP all IC, all 4 count; 10x SSH, 10x DQ, 10x Merkin, 10x HRM, 10x Merkin + sky Reach, 10x Merkin, 10x Arm Circle, 10x reverso, 10x seal claps, 10x overhead claps, 10x arm circle, 10x ww2, 51 LBC, 10x Hello Dolly, 10x Rosalita, 10x Bohemian Rhapsody, 10x Freddie Mercury, 10x APD, 10x Tuscaloosa Trailer Park Twister.
Mosey to pull up bars. 10x pullup to start. 50x tuckup (half pullup, elbows at 90deg+ lift knees to elbows) + 50 squats.
Mosey to tires. Pair up. flip tractor tire. 20x each out and back.
Mosey to benches. 50x dips + 50 squats.
BTTF. Heel raises and Romanian DL.
YHC took us out. Prayers for LabRat, Handshakes’ family, TryHards sister.
NMS – Fun to be in Daville today and talking about leadership and training men for combat with Corned Beef. YHC abs still tight from Sat – will be a fun week. Its amazing how sound carries 150m in the morning gloom and the kinds of things discerning adults will share. You probably had to be there.
Missed seeing the rest of the davilians! Did the GridIron BB scare off the PAX? They might want to get some more than others what to get some. 😉 Til next time when we will flip the truck tires.
