Sign Up – Breaking Bread, Fall 2021

It’s that time, fellas. It’s time to show that we have the metal to match words with actions. Who will help carry the load?

This message is about asking for your help to make a real-life Impact – both in time and effort – on behalf of a group of people who F3RVA has sponsored for the last ~5 years.

Most of you are aware that F3RVA helps by feeding residents in the Medical Respite facility at the Southside Health Center. This is on the Q sign-up sheet as, “Breaking Bread.” F3RVA chose to expand in 2020 to help out TWO nights per month. We need your help to meet this commitment.

Many guys took up this charge in the past quarter – YHC thanks you. Great work.

We are now taking sign-ups for this fall (sign-up on the Q sheet). Pick an evening. Grab an F3 buddy, or your spouse / significant other, or your kids, or all of the above, make a meal for some folks going through a challenging time, and change their lives (and YOUR life) for the better. We usually feed 7-13 people per evening. It’s pretty easy – make some good food (or buy some good food), bring it to 180 Belt Blvd., drop it off, and experience the thankfulness of a room full of good people. If COVID calms down, you might even be able to cook on-site in their kitchen.

Many of you all have done this in the past. We cover 24 nights per year, so YHC encourages you to sign up again. And, YHC thanks you.

Here are the dates (again, sign up on the Google Sheet – link below).

    September 25 (Saturday)
    September 26 (Sunday)

    October 23 (Saturday)
    October 24 (Sunday)

November 27 (Saturday – Thanksgiving weekend)
November 28 (Sunday – Thanksgiving weekend)

One final note, which YHC hopes is inspiring. YHC was recently on the west coast and had the opportunity to roll by NAB Coronado. Over one of the doors, the following was posted: “Choose to Carry More.” That’s what each man and each family does when they help at Breaking Bread. Please, sign up. And, YHC thanks you in advance.

  • Pre Blast: Q School Coming

    Pre Blast: Q School Coming

    This is a pre-announcement.

With all of us excited about F3 and an on-going push to headlock new guys and pull other guys back from the Fart Sack, F3RVA will be hosting a Q-School later this year. This is an invitation to each PAX member to provide input on what they suggest we cover.

Recall that one of F3’s five core principles is a two-part statement: workouts are led by a rotating Q who participates in the workouts. Rotating Q. Participates in the workouts.

Some of the following may (or may not) be topics and / or instructors:

    1. “Counting to Three or Four,” by Mr. Holland (aka, F3RVA’s Resident Choral Instructor)
    2. “Appropriate Use of the Single Arm Circle,” by Hardywood
    3. “I Have a Question,” by Saab
    4. “Pills: Red, Green, Blue and Q,” by EF Hutton
    5. “Touch a Tree: Why It’s Worth Doing Every Q,” by YHC

Q-School is a fantastic opportunity for guys who are newer to F3RVA or PAX looking to sharpen their Qing skills to hear about the Q from guys who have years of experience. This will cover everything from having access to the Q sheet (on Google Docs!) to techniques for managing the workout. And, remember, there are many types of Q’s. Beat downs can be different from regular runs which can be different from Sunday Funday or Dirt Church. One size does not fit all.

More details to follow. In the meantime, pass the word. And, for those who have specific ideas, specific topics, or a particular experience you would like to see covered or shared, feel free to send them this way.

    SYITG!

  • 3rdF Service Opportunity: Historic Evergreen/East End Cemetery Cleanup

3rdF Service Opportunity: Historic Evergreen/East End Cemetery Cleanup

Gents – after Dogpile this Saturday (4/3/21), I’m heading out to the East End with the 2.0s to do some heavy lifting for a good cause. The community service organization that oversees the event offers volunteer slots from 9-10:30 and from 10:30-12. Please join if you can! Here is a description:

Historic Evergreen Cemetery is a historic African-American cemetery, created in 1891 and located in Richmond’s East End. East End Cemetery was established in 1897 next to Evergreen Cemetery. These cemeteries are the resting place for many of Richmond’s African-American leaders of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Maggie L. Walker, Hezekiah F. Jonathan, John Mitchell, Jr., Rosa D. Bower, and Rev. J. Andrew Bowler. There are an estimated 23,000 plots in Evergreen and East End, most of which have become overgrown after over 40 years of neglect. Clean-up activities have been conducted at Evergreen and East End Cemetery for several years. We are walking in the footsteps of some amazing volunteers – including family members who gave their time to hold the line for years. Thank you!

  • Breaking Bread – Spring/Summer, 2021

    Breaking Bread – Spring/Summer, 2021

Gentlemen, we put out the call to the PAX this fall, and you all answered. Thank you a ton.

Now, we are onto this Spring and Summer. This message is about asking for your help to make a real-life Impact – both in time and effort – on behalf of a group of people who F3RVA has sponsored for the last 4+ years.

For those not familiar, F3RVA helps by feeding residents in the Medical Respite facility at the Southside Health Center. This is on the Q sign-up sheet as, “Breaking Bread.”

    Openings (as of today):

    Sign up! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Dx2qsu9vXun_NFgeD0GDKwQ6G2f5a-AKQq4IYk2eAJY/edit?ts=57713453#gid=1389235370

    March 27 (Saturday)

    April 24 (Saturday)

    May 22 (Saturday)
    May 23 (Sunday)

    June 26 (Saturday)
    June 27 (Sunday)

The Thang: The PAX (sometimes multiple PAX and/or with their family/kids) sign up to bring dinner to 10-15 people recovering from injuries or illnesses at the Medical Respite Clinic on Belt Blvd. This is a place for those who have no other place to recover.

Most of us will never need Medical Respite. That’s one more reason to be grateful for your position in life. Due to COVID, other groups have stopped providing meals. That is F3RVA’s reason to step-up. In 2020, a surge of PAX spirit moved F3RVA to take TWO nights per month instead of one (fourth Saturday and fourth Sunday). Your F3RVA brothers have challenged you to step-up. Many PAX have volunteered to take on the extra load (t-claps; you know who you are). YHC & Company ask that you do the same. Look for the sign-up slots on the Q Sheet. Look for reminders from YHC, who thanks you in advance. And, for those of you who have a Q during the week, please make an Announcement that we need PAX to commit themselves to making an Impact. Sign up.

For those who believe that making a group dinner sounds hard, it is not.

    1. You choose the menu.
    2. You make dinner for 10-15 humans.
    3. You deliver it at 5:30 p.m. (even the time is perfect for F3). Note: due to COVID, we simply deliver the food – we are not allowed inside the building to serve.
    4. The residents will open the door to take the food.
    5. The residents will thank you profusely.
    6. You are done.

Boom. It’s far easier than a Spit Q, a DTH 8-count exercise, keeping up with Gypsy on a run, posting as often as Handshake, Hitch, or Swirly, any CSAUP, doing SSH’s with The Carpenter, or birthing an anything that lives on Hardywood’s farm.

These people need F3RVA’s help (meaning YOUR help). As YHC has said many times, if you want to impress your M or your 2.0s, all the muscle-building workout stories are a paltry second place to making and delivering dinner for Breaking Bread. Tell them about that experience. Don’t get me wrong – doing your own rendition of UpChuck’s Rules for Touch-a-Tree can be riveting. But, this activity will impress the Mrs. or Girlfriend.

Sign up on the Q sheet. Reach out to me with questions. Make an Impact.
