  • F3RVA 3rd F AO

    F3RVA 3rd F AO

PAX, clear your calendars for this time next week. An online 3rd F AO is opening up on Zoom. The first inaugural will be led by Kubota on “Joy Comes in the Morning”.

Time: Biweekly, Tuesdays, beginning May 26th at 8pm

Location: Zoom (Meeting ID: 822 7005 7337, pm for the password or check Slack)

The purpose of this AO is to push the PAX along their journey in developing the 3rd F – Faith.  We recognize that PAX are at their own place on the journey and proceed at their own pace.  PAX are encouraged to share.  It is not required to share (wise men learn by listening), but there is a requirement to allow others to share.  What is shared in this 3rd F stays with the 3rd F; it is a COT.  None of the PAX has a monopoly on the truth, though we are all truth seekers.  It is fine to disagree.  If there are not disagreements, then we are probably doing it wrong.

    This 3rd F event:

    • Is free of charge,
    • Is a discussion based on the Christian faith, but is open to all men,
    • Is peer led by volunteer Qs who may or may not be certified/ordained.

  • Movie Review: Extraction as an embodiment of F3 values

Movie Review: Extraction as an embodiment of F3 values

This weekend I watched the new Netflix-produced film Extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth. It has gotten a lot of good press, and I’m always up for a great action movie. In some ways, it was a classic macho hero action flick, and it did all the right things very well. Probably one of the best action movies I’ve seen in years. But in other ways, it was really different than a typical action film in some pretty important ways, and discussing it over a 5 mile run with Swirly and EF Hutton this morning, it occured to me that it is a film that embodies many of the best principles of F3. Hutton encouraged me to write about it, so here we go. Also, warning, major spoilers here. Probably don’t read this until you’ve watched it.

Chris Hemsworth plays Tyler Rake, a retired special forces soldier who now serves as a mercenary for hire. We can tell he has some kind of serious death wish, as evidenced by his impetuous jump off a 30 meter cliff in the beginning of the film. We learn that he is prone to take missions that will most certainly end up with him dead, yet he somehow keeps living. We also learn he is an alcoholic and addicted to oxycontin. Clearly there is some dark stuff in this guy’s past.

He and his team get hired to extract a middle school boy who is the son of a very powerful druglord in India, and who has been kidnapped by a rival druglord in Bangladesh. The beginning of the mission goes swimmingly, with Tyler killing like 50 druglord guys with his pinky and a handgun, resulting in him securing the boy, whose name is Ovi. But then things go south real quick, as he and his team get ambushed. It turns out that the entire police force and military forces of Bangladesh and every kid with a pocketknife are all in the pocket of the druglord, and they’re all after Tyler and Ovi. The rest of the film is basically Tyler evading getting killed and killing everyone that is trying to kill him, all the while trying to keep the boy safe and get the hell out.  This involves some crazy shooting and fighting scenes that ensure you should not watch this film with your small children.

If that was the whole film it would be really entertaining. But what makes it a really great movie is what is behind all the action. In the midst of this crazy mission, Tyler discovers he has a purpose. We learn from a tender conversation he has with Ovi that Tyler was married and had a son, but his son had cancer and died at the age of 6. Tyler confesses that he could not face the suffering of his own child, so he signed up for a third tour to Afghanistan. His son died without him present and his marriage fell apart. Tyler now lives for nothing but himself, addicted to substances and violence, drowning his pain, his life an emblem of his selfish abandonment of his family. Throughout the film, he sees fuzzy images of his son in his imagination, but he can never see his face.

But in the midst of the firefights, Tyler comes to care for Ovi. Ovi is a sweet kid with a bad father himself, and in a weird way Tyler becomes his father and Ovi becomes Tyler’s son. Tyler begins to realize he has a reason for living other than his own selfish appetites. He is confronted with several opportunities to bail and even capitalize financially on Ovi’s surrender, but he commits himself with the most impossible passion to keeping Ovi alive and getting him safe. And at the end of the film, when he has one final opportunity to escape, Tyler instead turns straight into the fire and takes a literal bullet in the head for Ovi. As he wavers on the edge of life, about to collapse in death, he gestures to Ovi to run to safety. In one final vision Tyler sees his son again, but this time he sees his face. He is a father again. Through his act of love and surrender, his purpose is restored, his life is whole. He dies, but his death is not a dark fulfillment of his selfish choices, it is redemption.*

What does this have to do with F3? I love F3 not just because of the exercise but because of the purpose that our shared exertion embodies. Sure, we work out and make our bodies strong, and sure, we all secretly want to look like Chris Hemsworth and Swirly and be badasses. But the point is not being a badass. The point is love. The point is to claim our purpose, which is to no longer live for ourselves, but to live to give ourselves away. The selfish darkness inside of us all will always threaten to kill us and harm others around us, but true life comes when we surrender our self-centeredness and live for love.  Specifically, to live for substitutionary love, love that sacrifices self that others would gain life. In the end we are not saved by violence but by surrender. As Someone really important said, “He who seeks to save his life will lose it, but the one who loses his life will find it.”

The end of the film is purposely ambiguous, the director admitted, as you get a glimpse of a shadowy figure of Tyler watching over Ovi. The credits roll, and you’re asking, Did he somehow survive? Was that in Ovi’s imagination? Is this just a set up for a money-making sequel?? But it’s left in the mind of the viewer to decide. I like to believe that Tyler is really dead and this was a vision of him in Ovi’s imagination, his father-figure who has now imprinted him forever and given him his own purpose to live for.**

In this time of so much fear and division and uncertainty, let’s live to give ourselves away to others. (And being badasses is ok too.)

*The ending, at least to me, plays off the title of the movie. Ovi is successfully extracted from his kidnappers, while Tyler is extracted from his internal imprisonment and finally achieves freedom.

** I admit that as a pastor, the end made me think of Jesus, who after substituting himself for us actually did rise from the dead, and then promised to be with us always, to the very end of the age.

  • TRON: Going Digital Part Deaux

    TRON: Going Digital Part Deaux

Starting Monday the 20th at 5:30am there will be a second weekly virtual AO. This way there will be Monday and Wednesday virtual options. TRON will be held live from inside the computer (or phone). YHC will be Q to start out with. All PAX are welcome. Bring a coupon if you have one.

After going to several virtual beat downs, YHC feels going digital can be less complicated or daunting than it might seem. Also excited to bring a few new or less used exercises to the routine.

This is easy to do with a laptop, tablet or smartphone. I’ve done laptop and phone and both worked pretty well.

Info to join in is below. SYITG!

Boberry is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting:

Zoom meeting ID is: 822-7005-7337. The password will be posted to Slack (or message YHC or Offshore).

  • Virtually F3RVA’s Newest AO

    Virtually F3RVA’s Newest AO

On Wednesdays beginning April 15th, F3RVA will have an online AO and virtual beatdown via Zoom.

Location? Your yard. We do this outdoors.

The name? Smell Like Your Own Dog’s Piss for a Change. YHC will accept suggestions for revisions. Perhaps Davillians can provide a one-syllable revision.

    More logistics:

The Zoom meeting number is 822-7005-7337. The password will be posted to Slack (or message YHC).

Identify a chair or some other surface in your yard for Dips, Decline Merkins, etc.

An ideal setup is probably wireless earbuds with a tablet or phone on a stand. Next best (YHC’s boat) is a phone in your pocket with wired earbuds. Otherwise, you can call the number from a home phone. Consider a ziplock bag for the phone if moisture is a concern.

Install the Zoom app on your device. On a phone, swipe right to switch to gallery view to view more PAX at once. Do not put yourself on mute – the point of this is to let the other PAX know you’re there.

Check the wifi around your house. If it doesn’t reach, consider switching to cellular data only.

  • Introducing a New AO: The Last Resort

Introducing a New AO: The Last Resort

    Gentlemen,

In the midst of gyms closing, sheltering in place, work from home, and a sense of the unknown, the 2nd F we get from working out together in The Gloom becomes even more important. And there are lots more men around us who don’t yet realize that they need what F3 offers!

YHC has decided to start a new AO centered in his own neighborhood and focused on inviting neighbors into the PAX. Flyers have gone in mailboxes and I’ve gotten the blessing of the Longdale Elementary School principal.

Monday morning at 5:30 (March 23), come check out The Last Resort at Longdale Elementary School, 9500 Norfolk St in Glen Allen. It’s about 15 minutes or less from DaVille, Dogpile, and Hoedown, right off of Brook Rd & 295. We will need some seasoned Redwoods to show these FNGs what it is we do. I’ll take the first Q – If it turns out there are more than the recommended 10 who gather, we might split into two groups.

“The Last Resort” is both a reference to the community of F3 being one of the only places for fitness and fellowship these days, as well as the 1,000 accre resort and six-story hotel from the 1880s called Forest Lodge, located just up the road from the AO.

  • Breaking Bread and Enjoying the Fellowship

Breaking Bread and Enjoying the Fellowship

Representative’s from three of F3RVA’s nano-regions, converged on Belt Blvd this beautiful evening to serve up some food and fellowship with our brothers. After Husky blessed the food, twelve Medical Respite patients were served:

    Pork BBQ w/ buns

    Beef BBQ w/ buns

    Cole Slaw

    Baked Beans

    Cookies

    Lemonade

    Tea

The twelve were very appreciative and very hungry, but there was a somewhat somber mood with the TV blaring the news of Kobe Bryant’s passing (may he Rest in Peace).

If you have never participated and experienced Breaking Bread, please sign up on the Q sheet (every 4th Sunday of the month.) It is very rewarding and humbling. Any questions, please ask Lab Rat as he is the head of this great charity.

  • PreBlast: Breaking Bread

    PreBlast: Breaking Bread

A few of the newer PAX have asked about Breaking Bread and what it is and a few of the older PAX may need a refresher on what it is. The following is a short description of one of F3RVA’s service projects:

Breaking Bread is a program by the Daily Planet and is located at the Medical Respite of Richmond which is located on Belt Blvd in Richmond’s Southside. F3RVA has been signed up for years to serve a hot meal, on every 4th Sunday of the month, to a group of 5 to 20 homeless individuals who are recovering from a stay in the hospital for various reasons. The Medical Respite gives them time to recover in a home-like setting before being released to other housing or, more than likely, back on the streets 🙁

Here is the link to the program: https://dailyplanetva.org/get-involved/breaking-bread/

You can bring anything like pizza, BBQ, Fried Chicken, Lasagna, etc., etc. along with sides, drinks, and desserts. This is a great time to give your time to these more unfortunate people and show them you care. I have taken my 7 year old son with me a couple of times and other PAX have taken their whole families and friends to help. It usually takes about 4 to 5 people to serve this meal and to spend time with them in fellowship and prayer.

Breaking Bread is a great way for you and F3RVA to practice your 2nd and 3rd F’s! Sign up now on the Q sheet! Plus, this is extra credit for the Winter and Summer Tours!

YHC and my 2.0 Husky have signed up for January’s Breaking Bread, but we will need help. Please let me know if you would like to participate.

    Thanks and SYITG!
