  • Breaking Bread – Skins vs Cowboys

Two F3RVA regulars and YHCs M spent a Sunday evening in fellowship with some football fans.  YHC prepared enough lasagna, salad, and garlic bread to feed many.  LabRat provided some tea and we were ready to have a Sunday Dinner (my favorite meal of the week) with some new friends.  Unfortunately, LabRat has some issues at the house and could not attend but the tea was still delivered to YHC residence.  (Thanks LR).  As we arrived, we were informed there were not many guests at Breaking Bread this week, but the ones that were their were very appreciative of the food and fellowship.  As YHC walked in carrying food and drink, one of the guests was watching the Skins v Cowboys.  YHC was pleased to see this, as he would have somebody to converse with about football.  This particular guest was a joy to sit in front of the TV with, as he had a comment (mostly good) on every player for each team.  YHC asked him who is favorite team was and he proudly said the 49ers and immediately retreated to the 80s and 90s with Montana and Young at QB.  While a proud 49ers fan, he freely admitted the 2017 version of the 49ers has a lot to be desired, but hopeful for a successful rebuilding.  Winklevoss is a Rubiks Cube savant as he demonstrated to the guests multiple strategies for solving the puzzle.  The only way YHC could ever solve the challenge was to remove the stickers and place them were needed.  Great job Winklevoss.  YHC learned something very important during this dinner, YHCs M was in the kitchen with the Breaking Bread staff member helping to serve the food onto plates.  The entire time YHCs M and staff member were constantly talking.  On the ride home, YHC asked M what their conversation was about.  Turns out the staff member has lived an incredible life on both sides of the law.  Currently she holds three jobs (all involving social work) in which she helps many people including opiod addicts, prostitutes, and children.  The stories that were relayed to me were amazing.  What was more amazing was the amount of information YHCs M gathered in a short period of time.  What was even more amazing is the realization the impact that can be made on other peoples lives, when you have discovered your Purpose and you act accordingly.

  • Breaking Bread…Pound O’ Pasta – Come and Get It

Gumbo and his 2.0s (Redbird and Snare), a Redibrd classmate, EF Hutton and Hardywod had the great privilege of breaking bread tonight with 8 great folks tonight at The Daily Planet’s Medical Respite Center.  Following in the footsteps of his father, YHC ordered up WAY too much food, but its all good as we left and entire pan of baked spaghetti and meat sauce (probably 3-4 pounds) for the residents to enjoy for another meal.

We enjoyed some great fellowship and conversation with the residents and I hope brought a few smiles to their faces.  These are some great folks, and I would highly encourage any of you who have not had an opportunity to make time volunteer for a Breaking Bread.  It is a small sacrifice of your time and I promise you will get so much more out of it in return.

The residents are incredibly appreciative about the food and the fellowship – probably more excited about the fellowship honestly.  They truly need our help as the weekend volunteer who was there was telling us that groups sign up to bring meals and then don’t show.  I applaud this group for committing to things (serious or stupid) and following through.  My father-in-law always says 75% of success is just showing up.  Well, F3 shows up and brings it baby…Always!  So proud to be a part of this group.

See you men in the gloom!

    No more Gumbo for you!

  • PRE-Blast: Breaking Bread 8/27 – Help Needed

    PRE-Blast: Breaking Bread 8/27 – Help Needed

Gents, I have the Q for the upcoming Breaking Bread 2nd/3rd F opportunity on Sunday, August 27 from 5:15 until about 7:30 p.m. at The Daily Planet (180 East Belt Boulevard, Richmond, VA 23234).  We will be preparing and serving dinner to patients recovering from illness or injury or surgery in the Medical Respite Program.

I’m looking for 3-4 volunteers to attend with me and help out.  Let me know if you plan to bring your 2.0.  They recommend that any 2.0s be at least 10 years old and they ask that we not bring more than 10 people total.

I will plan the menu and take care of the main protein and would be looking for folks to chip in with bread, salad, dessert, drinks (lemonade or ice tea are the two options the program has given us).

We will serve the residents, eat with them and then join them for an activity (Bingo or something like that) until 7:30.

Please respond in the comment or contact me – 804-687-0120 or mgoldman@hunton.com if you are able to help out.

    Thanks!

    Gumbo

F3 was well represented by the 7 PAX members that signed up for the team as well as all Phonics 2.0’s on Team Reese Strong. Phonics lead the PAX completing the race in less than 20 minutes. Badger, Spit, and Mr Rodgers paced together for the first mile. Badger and Spit completed the race just under 23 minutes with Mr Rogers shortly behind just under 24 minutes.

Welcome to Simba who completed the race around 28 minutes. Hope to see you out at an AO soon!

Wild Thing finished around 33 minutes and Psycho decided to take his time came in around 43 minutes

We also had a booth to get the word out in the community about F3. See below (Sorry LabRat no takers on 5K the Hard Way!)

Several PAX Members place in their age groups:

    3rd Place 30 to 39 group: Spit
    1st Place 40 to 49 group: Phonics
    2nd Place 50 to 59 group: Badger

Also Team F3 was the second fastest team just a few seconds behind Team Reese Strong

Thanks to all the PAX that came out to support our community!!

  • Breaking Bread, Mending People

5 posted on a Sunday evening to prepare and serve food to some awesome folks rehabbing from various surgeries and other ailments

    The Thang and NMM:

F3 RVA has committed to supporting Breaking Bread on Sunday evenings every month going forward.  This was at the second time we have been out there and the second outing was even better than the first.

We posted at 530, got dinner ready from folks and began to serve (after an inspiring pre-meal prayer from Toga).  After serving all the patients, we grabbed some food for ourselves and sat down with folks for a meal.  Dinner was pasta with marinara or meat sauce, salad, garlic bread and a cobbler with ice-cream for dessert.  Second F during dinner was awesome.  These are normal everyday folks trying to get back on their feet after some sort of medical emergency.  Great to hear their stories and listen to their optimism.  One gentlemen I spoke with talked about just taking each day to get a little bit better and hopefully in a couple months he will be back to his old self.  These guys are struggling through life with the same vigor that we all put in at workouts.  One day, step, merkin, burpee, or whatever at a time to make yourself a little better than when you started.

Highlight of the evening was the post cleanup Bingo game.  Honestly, I thought playing Bingo was going to be completely lame.  But, whatever the group wants to do, I was up for.  Boy was I wrong.  The amount of smack talk and enthusiasm during the Bingo game was amazing.  The residents were pumped and Toga, Mudface, Chewie and Lab Rat were letting the smack talk fly.  YHC had the privilege of calling the game and when I suggested we pack it in, the crowd begged for at least one more game.  Added excitement for the game was that we were competing for some awesome prizes (provided by the residents).  Candy bars and $1 scratch tickets were the prizes for winning.  You would have thought we were playing for a million bucks.  I can’t wait to play bingo again with folks (Insert your favorite joke about TYA being old).

If you have not had the opportunity to do this 3rd F yet, jump in.  It is a blast and the residents could not be more grateful for the little bit of help we provided.  Honeydo is Q’ing next month, so reach out to him for details for our next outing.  It is 2.0 friendly.  Thanks to Hardwood….Ok, Lab Rat for finding this opportunity for us.  It was a great way to top off my weekend and start a new week.

    TYA OUT

  • F3 Breaks Bread

5 F3 representatives and 1 very awesome Tomato showed up at Medical Respite to serve and share a meal with 7 guests.  Here is a quick summary:

    Thang:

BBQ sandwiches, mac n cheese, green beans (with loads of ham hocks), and brownies for dessert.

    NMS:

Huge tip of the cap to Mrs. Amanda, who got this thing started, and who Lab Rat is lucky enough to work with.  She has an infectiously positive outlook on life, and is the direct cause of F3 being involved in this program.  She also put together most of the meal….the mac-n-cheese alone was worth the trip.

Lab Rat made the BBQ, and showed up barely on time in order to complete the meal.  TYA was there waiting in order to duely give him crap about his tardiness.  TYA failed to recognize that Lab Rat has a long drive, and that the Gamecocks just got done showing Florida how to play some Havoc style defense.  Luckily, he also brought TSB to smooth out the rough edges.  Good to see her again, as she has been on IR for a bit from Sunday runs.  Get well soon, TSB!

Rounding out the group, and sitting at the pro-UNC table for dinner were T-Swifty along with his  papa, HoneyDo.  They were easily put to task, and were slinging food within minutes.

We all introduced ourselves, got some food orders, and happily served our guests.  We each sat at a table and struck up conversations.  Topics naturally drew towards the tournament, but we also heard some stories from the veterans in the group.  Of particular note was “Tip”, who served 15 years in the Navy….in anti-submarine warfare of all places.  Tip was super helpful in getting us set up, due to his unfortunate situation of having been in the Medical Respite for some time while going thru a couple rounds of chemo.

We watched a little basketball and chatted a bit more.  Then we cleaned up, put the leftovers in some tupperware, and were out by 6:30 or so.  YHC thinks that the rewards were huge and the effort was relatively small.  This is a great way for F3 to step up and do some good in the community.  Therefore, Lab Rat will be signing F3 up for a regular monthly slot in the serving rotation at Medical Respite.  I highly encourage the pax to invest in this worthy cause.  Watch for signups on the Q sheet soon.

Apology of the week goes to…..NOBODY!  Yay!

    Lab Rat apologizes anyways.

  • Third F opportunity: Breaking Bread 3/26

Pax, I need a few volunteers to assist in serving a meal this Sunday 5:30 pm to 7 or so.  The meal will be cooked in advance, so it should be a fairly easy couple hours.  We are expected to serve the guests, then sit and have dinner with them.  I am hoping for 5 volunteers, please respond in the comments below if you are IN.  Family members over the age of 10 are welcome to join as well.

Details:  BREAKING BREAD GUIDELINES: MEDICAL RESPITE
Thank you for assisting The Daily Planet in serving a hot, nutritious meal to the patients staying at our Medical Respite Program. Those using the program are there to recover after being released from the hospital due to medical illness or injury. Below you will find information you’ll need as a volunteer and some basic guidelines for preparing and serving food for the residents staying at the Medical Respite Program.
The program is located at 180 Belt Boulevard (23234) in Richmond’s Southside. The location is half way between Midlothian Turnpike and Hull Street beside a Wendy’s. Please go to main entrance of the brick building and ring the doorbell on the left. Let the person at the front desk know you are there to serve a meal at Medical Respite.
Dinner is served 7 days a week. The program can accommodate up to 20 people; however the program is not always at capacity. If you want an exact count, please contact the staff at Medical Respite at least two days before your serving date. 292.3030.
Many of the patients at Medical Respite suffer from diabetes so having meals served at a consistent time is needed. We ask that groups serve lunch at 12:30 and dinner at 5:30 pm (preferred), but no later than 6 pm.
You will need at least 4 people to serve, and no more than 10 due to space limitations.
You will need to purchase food, prepare it, and then bring it to the program and serve it to the residents. There is a full kitchen at Medical Respite, so food can be prepared before or on site. If you choose to prepare on site, please plan on arriving by 5:15 pm. Menu Examples– main entrée, side dish (vegetable), bread and a small dessert. We do have some residents with dietary restrictions. These individuals know their limitations and have alternatives on site when needed. Please limit helpings to 2 per person.
There is a parking lot for you to use at the location. Please stay in groups as the neighborhood does have some crime issues. Coming from the parking lot in back, walk to side of building. You will see a set of stairs going up to 2nd floor. Please take these stairs up to landing and then ring the buzzer.
You do not need to bring pots and pans, serving spoons, plates, cups, utensils or napkins, as they are available on site. You can bring lemonade or iced tea. You are encouraged to bring enough food for yourselves and eat with the residents. Feel free to stay and visit or bring things to have an activity such as Bingo or an UNO Tournament with the residents until 7:30 p.m.
No cameras are allowed. We try to protect the privacy of our residents at all times.
We encourage youth groups to be involved with the programs at Daily Planet. An adult must accompany them at all times. We do not recommend children under the age of 10 participate. Although the program is a safe environment, we cannot always control what our residents may say. Some of the residents are dealing with mental health issues and this is a consideration for parents if they are bringing young children. We would not want to expose them to inappropriate language or behavior.
If you need to contact us, please call the appropriate number depending on the time of your call:
Monday – Friday call Susan Sekerke, the Breaking Bread Coordinator, at 804.783.2505 ext. 241 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. After 3:30 on weekdays or on weekends call 292.3030 and ask to speak to a staff person.
Inclement Weather: Mother Nature may deliver ice and snow to the area or cause power outages. If you find that your group cannot prepare and deliver meals at the scheduled time, please call 292.3030 and let them know as far in advance as possible.
