  • Breaking out the Christmas Dumplings

3 men took some time during this Christmas season to a meal a to some of those that could use some good comfort food and solid conversation.

We pulled out at 5:10 with food ready to be severed. YHC had some trouble with following directly but after a quick detour to the front of the building we made our way up the stairs.

We were greeted with a friendly welcome and got to work setting up.

On the meal today was some chicken and dumplings, apples, mashed potatoes with gravy, salad, and finally a Richmond staple Ukrop’s cake

We had the honor to sever and speak with 14 individuals who all have great stories to share.

YHC was truly humble by this experience. During this Christmas holiday season we get so caught up in the present we “have” to buy for our kids or making sure that we don’t get the wrong thing for our wife. We forget there are those that can’t be with their families during Christmas. Also there are those that don’t have a family and a simple act of kindness like bring a warm meal and means more than you can ever image.

Thanks to Bulkhead and our newest F3 RVAer (Surge) for helping out tonight. Surge is YHC best friend since the two of us were in the 3rd grade. Glad to finally have him and out.

    Stay humble and kind F3RVA!!

    SPIT ON THAT!!
  • Breaking King Hawaiian Rolls

    Breaking King Hawaiian Rolls

3 thankful Pax descended upon 180 Belt Blvd. for the latest installment of Breaking Bread.  According to the loitering customers next door at Wendy’s, here’s how the evening went:

Seymour and Malcolm arrived first to scout the AO.  Swirly would be proud – 40 minutes ahead of start time (ironically, start time for dinner actually is 5:30, only this event is “p.m.”).  UpChuck pulled in about 5:12.  Pax unloaded and set-up ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, King Hawaiian rolls, and cookies. What was the world like prior to Costco quantities?  Add to the food a quick set-up of plates, cutlery, etc. – all provided on-site.  Simple, fast, elegant.  Some 2-liters of lemonade and iced tea were placed on a table.  Easier than calling cadence, for sure.

A short prayer of thanks for the bountiful harvest, and 15 patients filled their bellies, some coming back for 2nds, 3rds, and a snack to squirrel away for later.

Seymour and UpChuck did a little clean-up.  Easy-peasy.

The Pax then ran a 6 mile loop.

    NMS:

Every Pax member should put this event on their calendar.  First, it’s easy (which YHC recognizes is not typically the F3 approach).  Second, it’s rewarding.  You will learn about yourself through this event.  But, most important, these folks really appreciate someone coming to provide them a decent meal.

All in all, another fun evening sharing the 3rd F with a couple of my F3 brothers.  What a treat to get to know Seymour a little better, meet Malcolm, and share a meal and some conversation with some folks recovering from various medical ailments in a safe environment.  YHC was humbled to chat with a woman who described how she became homeless.  Wow.  She shared that, once she is back on her feet financially and medically, she realized how important it was for HER to be more humble in the future.  Good lesson for YHC as well.

Have a wonderful last few hours of the weekend and a solid week fellas.

  • Pre-Blast: Breaking Bread, Sunday, November 25 – Need YOU!

Pre-Blast: Breaking Bread, Sunday, November 25 – Need YOU!

    Thanksgiving Quiz

Question 1: Where was the first Thanksgiving in America held?

Answer: Virginia.  That’s easy.  As early as 1610.  9 years before some Massachusetts Pilgrims scraped up their new Plymouth by crashing into a rock on their way home from a baahhhh.

Question 2: What is a HIM?

Answer: High Impact Man.  This weekend, it’s YOU!

Question 3: Who will be a HIM for 2.5 hours on Sunday, November 25, 2018.

    Answer: You

    Question 4: What is needed?

Answer: F3 RVA sponsors Breaking Bread one Sunday evening each month.  This month, it falls on Thanksgiving weekend. As of Tuesday, no one had signed up, so I jumped at the opportunity.

Isn’t this a hassle on a Sunday?  Only if you let yourself think that way.

If you have not done this, it’s not a burden – it’s a reward.  You will have the opportunity to serve dinner to roughly 12-15 people.  These are folks who incurred injuries or other medical conditions in their lives.  They found themselves homeless in the process.  The Daily Planet is their chance to recover safely and, at this time of year, in a warm, welcoming environment.  Your help pulls them through.  And, having done this 2 times already this year, I can tell you there will be no one at your family Thanksgiving tomorrow more thankful than these folks will be for your help on Sunday.

Also, for anyone who is thinking, “But, I like to watch football on Sundays,” your prayers have been answered.  They almost ALWAYS have football going on Sundays in the fall.  EVERYONE watches.  No burdensome M’s or 2.0s to ask you to be a husband or Dad** – just you, football, and helping the homeless.

I need ONE brother (two would be fine, but I NEED one), one HIM, to step up for Sunday.  I’ll do most of the cooking.

    Who’s in?

Respond to the Pre-Blast or text me (804 307 6765).  Help a brother, help some homeless folks, but most of all, help yourself, F3RVA Thanksgiving-style, by lending a hand.

**Bring your kids, if you wish.  Daily Planet recommends that they be 10 years old to attend.

  • Cliffhanger Hangs out @ Breaking Bread

2 dads and 2 sons met up with pots, pans and other assorted cooking implements to feed some folks at Breaking Bread on a Sunday evening.  This is how it all got eaten:

-Warmup:  lug all Lab Rat’s crap up the steps.  Let Cliffhanger know that he’s cooking.

-THANG:  The Chicken Bog:  Saute some onions, garlic and sausage and warm up the broth.  Combine above with fresh pulled chicken and rice.  Cook for 20 minutes.  Load up bowls and serve with butter bread.

Mary:  mint chocolate chip ice cream (plus some other kind, who cares?) plus chocolate chip cookies.

NMS:  Young Cliffhanger got handed the reigns of tonight’s dinner right out of the gate by the Q, and there was no turning back.  He handled it like a pro though, kid’s got game.  Also, he’s just about as tall as daddy now too.  Toro did a great job of guarding the chair by the door.  To his credit, a room full of strangers is not his wheelhouse.  He complained minimally.

Somehow, we ran out of food, with BARELY enough to feed the guests (everybody got some, a couple folks got seconds).  Rosie, Toro and Lab Rat took one for the team and skipped the meal.  No worries though, there was plenty of ice cream and cookies for us to calm the rumblings enough to get home and make an alternate supper.  Next time 3 chickens.

As always, these are some down on their luck folks trying to get by and are super appreciative of a meal.  Thanks to Rosie and Cliffhanger for lending support and knocking dessert out of the park (did I mention the mint chocolate chip ice cream?!?).  Rosie, you should be proud of such a grounded young man you are raising.

    Announcement:

-November 25th is the last Breaking Bread that needs a Q for the year.  Get some.

Apology of the week goes out to Rosie for no dinner.

    Lab Rat apologizes…

  • Breaking Bread with the Kiddos

YHC and his 2.0’s took several warm pizzas over to Breaking Bread this evening.  My kids were able to help serve dinner while engaging in conversation with some of the residents.  What a beautiful thing to see as a parent coupled with the invaluable experience for the children.  Labrat, thanks for putting this program together, we love it!

  • Breaking Bread with 2.0s

Gumbo and his 2.1 and 2.2 (Redbird and Snare) and two 2.0 friends filled up the Gumbo-mobile with Chicken Fiesta and headed to The Daily Planet to “break bread” with the folks there.  We dished out some delicious rotisserie chicken, rice, salad and, of course, some fried Yuca.  It was a great time.  The 2.0s all took orders, served plates of food, and engaged in great conversation.

Just like the first time I Q’d Breaking Bread, this is a wonderful opportunity for 2nd F and 3rd F and to meet and share some food and fellowship with some great folks who have hit a rough patch.  One woman tonight got sick and had to have heart surgery.  Throughout the process she was hospitalized for about six weeks and ended up losing her apartment.  Talk about being kicked when you are down.

It turns out that another couple from Grove Ave Baptist Church came tonight and brought Domino’s pizza, so there was a lot of food to go around, but the Chicken Fiesta was hit.  The patients were extremely thankful – it sounds like last Sunday was quite the opposite – not enough food to really make a meal.  But, they got creative.

Certainly makes you feel grateful for all the many blessings we have been given.  I encourage any of you who have not posted to a Breaking Bread to look at your calendar and try to block out a few hours on the last Sunday of one of the upcoming months.  So worth it.  You will get more than you give.

See you in the gloom, brothers.

    No More Gumbo For You!

  • Breaking Bread This Sunday – Looking for 1 or 2 volunteers

    Gents –

If you have not been to a Breaking Bread, or if you haven’t been back for a while, consider coming with me and my 2.0s this Sunday.

I have the Q for the upcoming Breaking Bread this Sunday, 8/26.  It is a great 2nd/3rd F opportunity from 5:00/5:15 until about 7:30 p.m. at The Daily Planet (180 East Belt Boulevard, Richmond, VA 23234).  We will be preparing/bringing and serving dinner to patients recovering from illness or injury or surgery in the Medical Respite Program.  I’m looking for a couple volunteers to attend with me and help out.

Not sure what the menu will be, but if you are able to help out contact me at 804-687-0120 or respond in the comments.

    Thanks!

  • Breaking Bread

The following showed up for Breaking Bread this evening:  Kubota (and his 2.0 Husky), Mr. Roper (and his 2.0 Charlie), and YHC (2 out of 3 of my 2.0’s = Ellie and Charlie).

We had the honor of serving some bbq and fixings to a group of Richmond’s less fortunate this evening, what a great experience.  YHC enjoys exposing his 2.0’s to these experiences as often as possible…. Needless to say, YHC’s daughter (Ellie, 7 years old) and son (Charlie, 5 years old) had lots of questions about the wonderful folks we were able to serve, what a great learning experience for them.  It was fun to watch Kubota’s 2.0 along with the rest of the kids brighten these folks day, as they were able to interact and even play some rubix cube with the residents…

Best part:  YHC’s daughter said to Kubota at the end, “that was cool, I’d like to do it again.”

Great to meet one of Mr. Roper’s 2.0’s (Charlie, age 15), he’s a good kid!

Thanks for the assistance guys, and I look forward to doing this again.. Thanks also to Labrat for coordinating this effort from the get go!

  • Breaking Bread and BBQ

YHC along with Oyster and Spike visited the Medical Respite this evening and had a bit of fellowship and faith with some of the less fortunate among us in RVA.  There were eight wonderful people there that we blessed and fed a meal of BBQ (beef and pork), coleslaw, baked beans, rolls, dessert and beverages.  Everyone enjoyed themselves and we had great conversations with them.  YHC’s 2.0 asked him if he could go help, but due to age restrictions, he could not.  I’m just glad that my 5 year old son knew that I was going to help feed some people that have been down on their luck and that maybe one day he would do the same.  It was also nice that most of our nano-regions were represented tonight!  If you have not helped with this program before, please be sure to volunteer.  The Q sheet is blank for the next few months, so please be sure to sign up.  You will not regret doing this!!

    Thanks!
