  • Good Morning Buttercup

9 warriors rose to greet the dawn of a new day.  According to legend it went a little something like this.

Mosey down to the Duck Pond for a little COP

IC X 20: SSH, CP, IW, WWII, FC, Merkins

Monkey Humper Merkin Pyramid:  At each light post complete two exercises.  The first is 5 merkins/15 monkey humpers.  At the next light post complete 10 merkins/10 monkey humpers.  Third lightpost is 15 merkins/5 monkey humpers.  Etc until completion.

Hills of Lindsey:  At the bottom of the hill complete 1 burpee.  Run to the second lightpost and complete 10 squats.  Run back to the bottom for 2 burpees and run back up to the second light for 9 squats.  Etc to completion.

Hill of Ill Repute Native American Run:  All the way up to the top…all the way.

What Goes Up:  Complete the following 3 exercises until we get back to the center:  10 lunge, 10 bear crawl, 10 broad jumps.

Mosey back to the flag Nolan Ryan Merkins X 10 and Flutter Kicks X 15.

Numberama, namerama, Sippy Cup led us out.

News:  Puppy Pile is on 1/26 at 7:05am.  Bring your offspring and show them you haven’t lost a step yet.

Rucking is serious business, just ask any middle schooler with a 25lb pack.  There’s a lot of rucking going on at F3RVA.  Ask a grown man with a heavy backpack for details.

Moleskin: Way to work fellas!  9 at Batteau is a strong number and you guys crushed it.  It shouldn’t surprise anyone, but Swirly has gone from Beast Mode to Monster Mode.  This was a really hard workout and to do with with a weighted vest is borderline ridiculous.  Just incredible.  Sippy Cup must have loaded up on some combination of Wheaties and PEDs before coming to Batteau.  He led every single exercise after running to the flipping AO.  Great job to Swinger for hitting his 3rd workout!

Make it a great one fellas.  Thanks for the monster effort today.

  • RIP Dick Clark

Four Time Square Goers hit the city streets of Batteau for a Rockin New Years Eve Beatdown. The countdown:

Dr. Try Hard took us out. Great message. Well said.

Announcements: NYD Convergence tomorrow at HBR. 7:00 start. Honeydo may have Bloodies afterwards. Bring coats for Marmaduke. 100 is in sight.

NMS: Today was an important day for all of us. It signified the completion of the 2018 year. It signified the beginning of the 2019 year. As YHC looks back on 2018, by no means was I unhappy. But by definition, I was a Sad Clown. That all changed on 2/24/18 when I posted at my first F3 beatdown, a Dogpile. I could spend all day on here thanking each of you for all that followed. We’ve shared awesome moments of triumph. Never failure, but many, many moments of pushing through and giving it all, when we didn’t have it all to give. Words do this group no justice, truly. Brotherhood isn’t strong enough. Inspirational isn’t worthy enough. Support is demonstrative enough. YHC is sincerely grateful for each of you, and cannot wait to further the bonds in 2019. Happy New Year men!

  • Is a Punching Bag legit for Christmas?

5 eager and motivated men escaped the fart sack for a beat down in the friendly confines of Batteau.  A Hot Potato is called.

COP: Swirly – Mosey to other side of house under the lights, just in case we see Abba or others, so they can see us.  SSH’s, DQ’s, Helicopters, Imperial Walkers, let’s Mosey!

Thang: Swirly – Down to the Tennis Courts.  4 corners – lunge to 1st corner, perform 20 Copper Head Squats – lunge to 2nd corning, perform 30 Flutter Kicks – lunge to 3rd corning, perform 40 Lt. Dan’s.

Pass to Hutton – Head over to the picnic tables (4).  Each PAX member picks a table, while the 5th is running the large circle.  1st round is step ups on the bench – 2nd round is Pole Smokers, 3rd round is Monkey Humpers.  Each member rotates on the tables as the next up runs the circle.  Completed once each member has finished three loops and all exercises three times through.

Pass to Flange – Mosey over to the line of trees in a straight, declining formation.  Run to 1st tree and perform 10 Mountain Climbers, run back to start and perform 5 Merkins – run to 2nd tree, perform 20 jump squats, back to start for 5 Merkins – 3rd tree, perform 30 WWII’s – 4th tree, 40 LBC’s – 5th tree, 50 SSH’s – 6th tree, 60 single count Freddie Mercury’s – 7th tree, spring to it and back to start.

Back to the circle right on time, 6:15!  Numberama, Namerama, No announcements.  Flange took us out.

NMS: Swirly continues to nurse the bum shoulder back to good health.  It was a leg smoker today and a nice change!

Good to be out this morning and something just felt different about it.  Maybe it was the fact YHC didn’t have to work today, so no rushing off for dogs and kids?  Or, maybe it was being back at Batteau with a good group of men?  Or, maybe it’s just because it’s Christmas and YHC has been really looking forward to this time with family and giving many thanks to God for the ultimate gift of our Savior?  It’s definitely all the above!

The post workout chatter had Swirly looking to the PAX for confirmation that he had bought his 17 yr old daughter the right gift…a heavy bag!  He recognized that it’s not a typical one for a 17 yr old girl, but confident it would work.  After hearing the stories of when she was just a little girl sparring on the heavy bag, while Swirly was cranking out his own work out and then hearing she had recently asked about that old bag, the PAX also felt confident he had chosen the right gift.  May each of you find some comfort on Christmas and the time to reflect on the many things you and your family’s have together, past and present.

  • Swirly’s Kryptonite…

5 studs found the deepest of gloom in Forest Hill Park for a Batteau beatdown that went something like this:

The initial foursome moseyed (carefully) to the  flat concrete area at the bottom of the steps but right before the Hill of Ill Repute for COP, including:

    • DQs
    • Helicopters
      • OH, we see a light, who could that be — the light is too high, so its not Sippy, and then Swirly says “looks like ABBA” … really, from 35-40 yards out in the darkest of glooms, Swirly identified ABBA somehow – from his gate or his scent …how?  Who knows, but don’t sleep on Corporate.  He doesn’t need facial recognition or light.  He knows who you are.
    • SSHs
    • Imperial Walkers

    THE THANG

Modified Sisyphus (thanks Mr. Holland!) (YHC can’t afford the royalties necessary to copy the whole thing)

Time to get the show on the road…short mosey up the steps to the Hill of Ill Repute for a modified Sisyphus.  This Sisyphus went like so:

    • Run down to the 1st lamp-post, bearcrawl back up to the starting point…plank for six.
    • Run to “big tree” between 1st and 2nd lamp-post, do 25 Derkins (facing down mountain), run back up tot he top…plank for six.
    • Run to 2nd lamp-post, 30 WWIIs uphill, run back to the top…plank for six.
    • Run to 3rd lamp-post, do 5 squats, 5 jump squats and 5 2-ct mountain climbers, run to the top…plank for six.  (NOTE: in the true Sisyphus, this stop consists of a triple check or dora…had to modify for time and for lack of IP rights…Mr. Holland is a brutal negotiator).
    • Run to the 4th lamp-post, do 10 burpees and Al Gore there for the six (don’t worry, we will go back up later)

    Mosey Around The Lake

1 lap around the lake, stopping at each lamp-post for an exercise – alternating between 5 merkins and 5 2-ct Freddie Mercuries.  If the lamp-post is out, add 1 burpee as a penalty.  Oddly, the burpees only happened at merkin stops.  Al Gore at the bottom of the Hill of Ill Repute for the six

Mosey up the Hill of Ill Repute

Catch Your Breathe MARY, all IC, including…

    • Flutter Kicks
    • Dolly
    • Rosalita
    • APDs
    • American Hammers

Tennis Court Suck, with Swirly’s Kryptonite…he may have x-ray vision, but he’s no Rocky Balboa with a jump rope…

4 exercise stations spread along one baseline = box cutters, 25lb KB Swings, 35lb KB Squats, Jump Rope.  The rabbit sprinted the long sideline, karaoke across the opposite baseline and backwards lunged back to the exercise baseline.  Rotate when rabbit returns.  Repeato x3

Merkin ROF…and time was up.  Back to the Flag

COT, Number-rama, Name-a-rama and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

    • Rosie’s 12-days of Christmas at NoToll tomorrow.  The Ghost Flag is up for grabs there also.  Extra points for holiday cheer.
    • HDHH at Capital Ale House, Midlothian, Wednesday 5:30 until ??
    • Book signing for Hardywood’s daughter Wednesday at Crossroads

    NMS:

It has been a while, but YHC Q’d at Batteau a while back and brought two jump ropes.  We learned at that time that actual jump ropes might be Swirly’s kryptonite, so naturally YHC vowed to grab another Batteau Q and bring them back…well today was the day. But, we had to put in some hill and lake work first.  Those are my favorite aspects of Batteau.  YHC will be back in 2019 for sure with jump ropes in tow.  No doubt Swirly will be ready!

It became clear that jump roping is a required class at VMI as Faceplant and YHC had 3 clean rounds.  Faceplant was generating some serious noise and energy during his rounds.  Vinny suggested Dominion hook him up to a transformer box and collect that energy.  Maybe next time.

Strong effort by all this morning.  For me personally, the 30 uphill WWIIs on the Hill of Ill Repute took the wind right out of me.  I think I slid downhill about 10 feet during those.

Happily no actual Faceplants this morning while running on slick cobblestone steps or through wet leaves.  Great work men.  Always a pleasure to load up Gumbo’s Food Truck and make a delivery.  See you in 2019!

    No More Gumbo For You!

  • Lone Wolf

As I ran to the AO in complete silence this morning (which was awesome)  I already knew that there were a few regulars that would not be there. Running in boots through a foot of snow I was breathing fairly heavy as I arrived. There was a black truck headlights facing the opposite direction of how we usually park so I could not be sure it was one of us. Come to find out it was my buddy Flange! OK I thought – party of two ! Errrrr… Flange jumped out of the truck an informed me that he had forgot to bring his shoes which fit inside his hunting boots. So the right call was made – dude get back in the truck. After a brief enjoyable cold conversation Flange hopped back in the truck and rolled. So solo Q it is….

Run back the way I came  through the neighborhood( total miles = 2)  – which as you can imagine was no joke this morning…

Clean off two cars – clean off a pathway on the steps = boom ! Nothing too special or creative but I worked up a good sweat. Looking forward to seeing how Spider run will work tomorrow ??

Yes Flange you get Big Data credit – cause you showed up buddy. I know you were willing to stay and plow through but you made the right call – better to keep your toes 🙂

    See y’all in the gloom..

  • Bleeder, Did You Pee?

An even five posted to start their weeks off right, Batteau style. Here’s how it popped off:

Swirly Q: SSHs / Helicopters / DQs / Merkins / LBCs … Mosey over to picnic benches. Round 1: 20 dips + 10 incline merkins and run around the small loop. Round 2: 10 step ups + bear craw from curb to curb. 5 merkins at each curb. Repeato x 3. Round 3: 20 sit-ups with feet on the picnic bench + 10 decline merkins. Repeat each round x 3.

Vinny Q: Indigenous People Run (ground and pound style). Round 1: Rabbit does 20 heels to heaven while PAX does flutter kicks. Round 2: Rabbit does 15 WWIIs while PAX does LBCs. Round 3: Rabbit does 10 merkins while PAX holds elbow plank. … Mosey down the hill of ill repute to the lake for ten burpees OYO.

ABBA Q: Run around the lake. Alternating lit lamps. First lamp 15 squats. Second lamp 5 merkins. Repeato back to the start. Lunges up the hill of ill repute to the first light. Bear crawl to the second light. Audible back to the flag for Mary. 20 LBCs OYO. Hold Helix squat for 90 seconds.

    YHC took us out.

Announcements: N/A Congrats to our Bear Creek 10 milers. Sounds like shoes were lost and man crushes were outed. Way to work fellas!

Moleskin: Another solid hot potato at Batteau. I didn’t really want to run much today given Sunday Funday, but then decided it would be a good idea to run down the hill of ill repute. What goes down, must come up. As we were circling the cold damp lake, YHC noticed a warm spot. Which begged the question, Bleeder, did you pee? To which he promptly responded by blaming Swirly, ABBA or Faceplant.  Which made sense given the flow of the current. (Perhaps you had to be there).

YHC has really noticed how fast the holidays have become. I challenge all of you to remind yourselves daily to view the holidays through the lens of your children, or the young ones in your family. See the joy and excitement they carry. The passion for the moment during this time of year. Stay in it men, it’ll be truly awesome!

  • Hot Potato

3 studs showed up for a Monday morning beatdown and were served a nice hot potato – just what the doctor ordered baby !

  • Sprinting for the arms and legs

It was cool but humid this morning as two PAX gathered for a Bateau Beatdown.

    Sippy leads.

COP–Helicopters, Don Quixote, Imperial Walkers, In Cadence Burpees, Merkins.

    Mosey to the Flag.

    COT.  Sippy closed it out.

    Moleskin.

Cardio kickboxing is kind of like sprinting for the arms, we figured out.  You end up as out of breath as a wind sprint and use a lot of core and upper body explosive movements just like accelerating for a sprint.  So we got sprints in both ways today!

Workouts with 2 lead to some nice conversations when the PAX are not out of breath.  We chatted about 10K times, Faceplant’s upcoming trip to Austria and Eastern Europe, injuries, the impacts of F3 and the like.  It was good to get to know you better Faceplant!

  • Rise and Shine Punk: It’s Monday Funday

5 warriors greeted the dawn of a new day.  According to legend it went a little something like this.

Cool Water: 3 rounds of the following exercises.  10 Incline hand release merkins, 20 dips, run the stairs up to the parking lot.

    Mosey to the tennis courts.

COP.  15x SSH, 10X helicopters, 10x Don Quixote, 10x Imperial walkers, 10 Roman soldiers

Then to the driveway for 3 rounds of Merkins with exercises in between.   In each case do 5x merkins at every tree to the end of the driveway and back (9 trees).  Round #1.  Jog to/lunge back.  Round 2, Roman soldiers to and back. Round 3, high knees to and back.  Total 270 Merkins.

    40 second plank

Round 5. Jab-jab-front elbow, back elbow

    40 second elbow plank

    Round 6. Continuous jab-cross.

Mosey back to flag for 10 burpees.

    COT-  YHC took us out.

Moleskin.  YHC was tempted to skip out this morning, but knew there would be brothers there waiting for me.  It was pretty high on the wetness scale–maybe the highest after a memorable No Toll a few years ago where we were donkey kicking in large puddles.  After a while you just let it soak in and we were moving enough to keep warm.  Swing planks were a nice challenge.  The cardio kickboxing was a bit of an experiment, but everyone liked it, so YHC will have to introduce it again.  It definitely will get you out of breath and gets the upper body pretty wobbly at the end.  Not a lot of mumblechatter today–we were too focused/or out of breath!  300-330 Merkin count.
