  • Figure 8s

Six strong attended a well lit workout at Batteau on a brisk Monday morning.

    The thang:

Circle up in the field- 21 SSH, 21 slow bending squats, 21 mountain climbers, 21 flutter kicks. Repeat all exercises twice.

    Mosey to parking lot.

Figure 8 Merkin Ladder – run around bigger loop, one merkin, run around smaller loop, two merkins, repeat up to 21.

100 quick feet on curb OYO.

Burp Merk – up to 5, repeat 5 and back down.

5 MOM – hot potato Q – LBCs, Box cutters, Freddie mercury, Hardywood’s wife, Wilson’s wife leg raises.

    Moleskin-

Excellent job today PAX. Props to Hardywood for cruising through the Merklin Ladder. That’s 251 total merkins in the workout for those tackling the merkin challenge, this includes a portion of the burp merk. The Hardywood’s wife exercise consisted of elbow planks and doing a SSH basically, YHC thought this new one deserved a ‘wife’ title.

Good to hear the first Virginia Beach outing went well, minus the interaction with some other locals. Keep up the good work down there.

YHC was reading last week’s Richmond newspaper in the office kitchen this morning and located a story about a gentleman who runs marathons all over the world, he’s in his 60s, and has run every Richmond marathon since 2004. His great-great-great-great (subtract or add one more) grandfather invented the batteau style boating system. Very fitting for a Monday morning read.

Honey Do, you’re tough as a rock, or stone should I say? get well soon buddy.

  • HalloGloom

A frightening four came to Batteau on a warm Halloween morning. 58 degrees and breezy, perfect weather to sweat off the extra candy to be consumed later today. it went down like this:

COP – SSH, IPs, Merkins, Flutterkicks, DQs

Mosey to other side of stone house. YHC demo’ed the newly dubbed Human Centipede:  pax elbow planks in a line, last man broad jumps up then over pax until reaching front, keep going like Indian Run across field.

Team up for Dora. 100 Box Jumps, 200 Dups, 300 LBCs. Add instead of running runner bear crawls to tree and back.

MOSEY to tennis court.  modified beast- 2 stops across court, 8 reps:  Burpees, WWII Situps, Merkins, Flutterkicks, Mtn Climbers ,CDDs.

MOSEY down the hill. Run up hill 5 burpees at light, jog down. Repeato x3. hit 6 for Box Cutters and Heels 2 Heaven. Mosey down to bottom for Box Jumps and Derkins. 10, 15, then 20.

Back to the flag, American Hammers to finish.

    Flipper took us out.

NMS – Although YHC is a horror movie fan he has not seen any of the Human Centipede movies, so some of the PAX were wary of the initial  mention and demo. The exercise itself seemed to work and with more pax than 4 could be even more fun.

The Dora with bear crawl took a lot of time. The audible from incline Merkins to LBCs was applauded.

Hardywood was fighting off a sore hip the entire beatdown. Flipper enjoyed his chance to outrun  him during the hills.

Stay safe tonight, be sure to post tomorrow to burn off the sugar this evening…

5 MOM – Freddie Mercury, Rosalitas, LBCs

    Mosey to shovel flag.

    Moleskin:

Good work this morning guys. YHC needs to do a daytime run through the AO, it’s difficult to determine the workout from the satellite view map and whether or not the terrain is lit up. Mrs. Singer did not think this ‘errand’ was worth it Sunday afternoon.

Normal workouts this week, nothing too new in the near future for announcements except the Virginia Beach AO in a few weeks. Watch out for acorns.

    MOLESKIN

As the PAX assembled at the old Stone House there was a very unhappy pooch lurking in the gloom.  Either the dog was a Seal Teamer or being chased by a coyote.  YHC is guessing the former, but the PAX was undeterred and set off into Cujo’s territory anyway.  BT theorized that Sippy would be late as he passed him crossing the bridge on the way in, but Sippy hit the AO right on time.   YHC has only posted at Batteau a couple of times, and forgot how much that Stair Loop sucks with or without coupon in tow.  Today marked the first birthday of YHC’s alter ego, EF Hutton.  YHC has been truly blessed to be part of F3RVA this past year.  YHC is constantly inspired by the fact that this group has men from all walks of life, doctors, lawyers, CEOs, small business owners, engineers, pastors, accountants, and probably some ditch diggers, but all extraordinary in their own way.  At the end of the day, no matter what we do or where we are from, we are all men in need.  We seek strength, physically, mentally, and spiritually, we seek encouragement, we seek leadership, and we seek fellowship.  YHC has found all of these things thanks to F3.  Only 15 more birthdays before YHC can find some “respect” as well.  Cheers!

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

Bear Creek 10 Miler (Still open?  TYA can get you in?)

HDHH this Wednesday at Zima’s Place aka Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, be sure to drop his name

EH any Hampton Roads guys that you know.

Since all BBs seem to finish with a signoff now, YHC will go with:

    EF Hutton Has Spoken.

  • In 1492 F3 Richmond…

Seven veterans and one FNG posted for a Columbus Day workout.

    The Thang:

Mosey around road, circle up in small field – Merkins (10), Mtn climbers (15), Plank Dips (10), Freddie Mercury (15), repeat all four, Don Quixote(10), Hillbilly(15)

Mosey down stairs to valley of doom (YHC thinks that’s what the area is now called).

Curb crawls Irkins up to 4 and back down using stone benches/wall.

Lindsays – step ups and flutter kicks

Mosey to field near house – Polar Bear crawl to the other end, Polar lunges with squats every 5 steps back.

Triple check – SSH, WWII situps, run around parking lot

Ring of Fire – two rounds burpees, one round merkins (10), one round heels to heaven (10)

    Moleskin:

Great job getting up and out to the early workout today PAX, it’s now always as easy on a federal holiday. Upon entering the neighborhood, a tree had fallen across the road and blocked the path. YHC encountered the same obstacle in his own neighborhood but managed to make it to the workout on time.  Acorns menaced the hands and backs during the valley of doom exercises. This, in addition to the brisk temperature, feels like fall is upon us.

T-claps for T-Swifty, Honey Do’s kid, for making his FNG appearance this morning. PAX had an idea for a mini-melon name but upon hearing he did not like T Swift, and his fast pace in the workout, T-Swift stuck. Never disclose your thoughts on the naming process my friend.

YHC missed the convergence but heard it was a good workout in the rain. 44 strong at both workouts! Great job.

Announcements – keep an eye out for this month’s happy hour, hasn’t been decided yet. Otherwise there’s a couple runs, one that’s full and a 50K in March.

  • Southside Trifecta – Would You Like Rocks With That?

    The Thang:

COP  – 20 X SSH, Imperial Walker, LBC, Freddy Mercury, +10 Merkin

Triple Check – Three rounds of 1 runner with a rock of success to the light post and back, jump squats and pole smokers.

Bob The Builder – Running with the Rock of Success stop at each light post and perform the following:  15 Mountain Climbers, 10 Merkins, 5 Burpees.  5 total light posts.

Ascend the hidden path to the Valley Of Doubt.

Start at the top of the hill perform 5 merkins, run to the bottom perform 5 WWII Sit Ups, ascend the next hill for 5 two count American Hammers and run back to the start.  Complete four rounds add 5 to each exercise per round.

Numberama, Namerama, COT and Swirly lead us out.

This was a good one fellas.  Anytime we can bust out the rocks, it adds a whole other level of fun.  Way to work it.

    See you in the gloom.

  • The Rise and Fall of the Oyster

Five RVA folks rose from their beds to join in on a Monday workout at Forest Hills park.

    The thang:

Mosey to the bottom of the stairs – COT – 20 SSH, 20 dips, 10 leg dips each leg, 20 flutter kicks.

Mosey back to bottom of the stairs – Lindsays- Irkins and WWII situps.

Bear crawl up the hill to the tennis courts.

Four Corners – 5 burpees, 10 slow bending squats, 20 Freddie Mercury, 40 LBC. Repeat but multuply reps by 2.

Mosey to small field next to street. Bolt. Jog around small field, sprint to flag.

    Moleskin:

Good to see everyone in the gloom. Way to push it on a Monday morning. YHC noted it was nice to not be drenched in humidity after a workout. The title of today’s workout came from an ill-advised attempt at bolts on the small lawn near the house. On the very first bolt, the one they call the Oyster was giving it his all, speeding out several feet in front of the Pax. Concurrently, the ever-wise Swirly was moving diligently across the field, throwing caution to us to ‘watch for holes’. This began the fall of Oyster as he found one of said holes, and took a good spill. All was well, laughs were had, and YHC abandoned the idea of bolts across a dark unknown field. Also Flipper provided some good laughs at attempting to bear crawl to the wrong entrance to the tennis courts. You are a fierce bear crawler sir.

Wednesday happy hour is being held by Hardywood at 6:00 PM at Crossroads near Forest Hill Park. Run then coffee I assume.

Best of luck to Saab as he takes on the cloud splitter this weekend. Just remember it’s a long mosey, that should take you through the 100 miles. Arnie Palmer golf claps for BT and Toga completing the Spartan race, heard it was really easy though.

  • Run Silent, Run Deep or Where’s Your Flair?

6 posted for a lovely (not really) RVA morning at Batteau.  The rain had stopped, but the humidity made itself comfy and planned to stay for awhile.  Thang:

Mosey around the big loop for warm-up COP: SSH, merkins, Don Quixote, scorpions, imperial walkers

Pair up for a run around the big loop while your partner executes curb crawls, flapjack and repeato x3.  Staying in pairs, backwards run small loop while your partner crab walks the curbs, flapjack and repeato x3.

Mosey to tennis court for a version of the arc loader with special attention to good lunge form  (Conspiracy would have been proud).  Sprint back and repeato x4.

Line up beside the tennis courts for 10x incline merkins and then run a suicide on the court.  Repeat with 10x derkins and side shuffle suicide.  Finish with 10x clerkins and backwards run suicide.

Mosey to loop for a burpee clock.  Execute a burpee followed by a run around the small loop, and add a burpee for each subsequent lap up to 7.  The PAX finished with flutter kicks and 10 burpees as a cherry on top.

NMM:  It’s odd how you start to look at things after doing F3 for a couple of years.  YHC’s plan to head down to the lake and lug rocks around was dropped after only a couple of the PAX remembered head lights.  Thankfully, everything becomes a workout after you’ve been to enough workouts.  There’s a loop, we have some lines on a court, curbs were made for crawlin’, and hey, there’s a little decline made for derkins.  Give this group a parking lot, and we’ll find something to do!

Re the title, it appears that the new OS on the Apple watch adds a special alert/rape whistle/emergency call feature.  Whilst doing merkins on the warm-up COP the watch decided to start counting down to battle stations.  They don’t show that on the commercial.

It’s no mystery that YHC and BT have a Spartan this weekend, so the PAX was encouraged to include a clap on the burpees.  That’s right, you clap when you put your hands over your head during the jump.  Most of Hardywood’s burpees didn’t count because he didn’t have enough flair in his burpees.  Can’t we all use a little more flair?

    Announcements:

    • YHC will check with Hardywood, but I’m proposing a 20 burpee tax for posting at Batteau without a headlamp.  This would be in place till the Spring thaw.
    • It’s not to late to join the Spartan race this coming Saturday.  The BT bus leaves early Saturday morning, and be sure to join F3RVA if interested.
    • Signup soon if interested in Bear Creek 10 miler
    • 10/1 Rugged Maniac, see EF Hutton
    • Va Beach launch is coming.  Look for more news from our Expansion Q, Johnsonville.

    Stay Classy,

    Toga

  • Follow the lights

Six F3 RVA faithful sailed off into a dark, gloomy morning at Batteau.

    The thang:

Warmup at the tennis court – 20 SSH, 10 Don Quixote, 15 Hillbillies, 15 slow bending squats, 25 freddie mercury.

Mosey to bottom of steps near farmers market – modified Jacob’s Ladder – 1 burpee at bottom of the hill, run to top and do 2 monkey humpers, run down and do 3 burpees, and so on up to ten monkey humpers.

Lindsays – Derkins and two-count flutter kicks.

Mosey to tennis court – 20 WWII situps OYO, backwards run, karoake (2), sprint. 2 MOM – Rosalitas and Alabama prom dates. bear crawl.

Triple check – balls to wall on fence, plank dips, run around house.

5 MOM – ankle taps, Hello Dolly, LBCs

Moleskin – great job guys. YHC took the opportunity to remember 9/11 in prayer and a moment of silence at the end. The events of that day and the ongoing efforts of our country are still very much in all of our thoughts 15 year later.

Props to Swirly for making it out this morning after the BRR, you’re a machine. YHC noticed Batteau was in need of a Q Sunday evening and decided to take the reins. Tried to keep the hill work to a minimal, plus it was so dark it would be difficult to use all that’s available at the AO.

Congratulations to all the BRR participants, YHC enjoyed viewing the ongoing pictures and updates from the weekend. Gold star to Goldberg for breaking a toe and finishing his legs, get well soon buddy.

Flipper showed up a little late as he was heading to No Toll before his brain began functioning. It’s happened to all of us.

  • Death By Donkey Kicks

4 brave and fearless men accepted the challenge at Batteau to break free from the sultry hold of the fartsack.  We took full advantage of this moment.

    The thang:

COP (Hardywood) – 20 X SSH, Imperial Walker, LBC, Freddy Mercury, +10 Merkin.

Indigenous Persons Run Pole Smokers (Swirly) – Line up with post and have your feet six inches off the ground.  The first man performs 5 pole smokers while the other men are holding their feet off the ground.  Once the pole smoker is done, that man runs to the end and the next one goes.

    10 X 2 X 3 (Swirly) – Perform 10 dips and 10 incline merkins. Complete three rounds.

King Bear (Bleeder) – Spaced out among 5 trees each man performs a wall squat.  The first man bear crawls to the next tree and tags that man holding the squat.  That man then bear crawls to the next tree, etc.  Perform continuous sets for 5 min.

Curb Crawl (Swirly) – Bear crawl to on curb and complete 1 incline merkin.  Crawl bear back to the starting curb and complete 2 incline merkins.  Bear crawl to complete 3 incline merkin, etc.  Work our way up to 5 merkins and then back down.

Death By Donkey Kicks (Hardywood) – Start with 5 donkey kicks and start a 30 second timer.  Once the timer goes off complete 6 donkey kicks.  When the timer goes off again complete 7 donkey kicks, etc to 15 donkey kicks in a round.

Indigenous Persons Run Up The Hill Of Ill Regret (Slurpee)

Tenzing Sherpa (Hardywood) – 30 two count mountain climbers, 10 jump squats.  20 MC/20 JS, 10 MC/30 JS

Mosey back to flag, numberama, namerama, Swirly lead us out

Moleskin – At about 2 minutes before we started the collective Pax recognized there was no defined Q.  As good men do, we all stepped up to take the lead.  Today, as are most of the best days was a team effort.

Of particular note was the work we did on the Hill Of Ill Regret.  It is one of the hardest hills in all of Richmond.  Our man Bleeder not only ran up the hill, but he completed every cycle of the Indigenous Persons Run.  I am 90% sure he has a bionic leg that is held together with duct tape, a baboon tendon and pieces from an Erector Set.  It’s hard to have any justifiable excuses when that kind of effort is shown.

Also of note was the run up the hill by Slurpee. Just one week earlier, on the same hill, doing the same exercise he fell off the back and walked the hill.  This week, he came back with a purpose in his belly. Not only did he suggest it, but he dominated it.  This was a beautiful thing to see and a very sold effort.

You guys are the best.  Big cheers to the brave men of Batteau.

    -Hardywood
