  • Batteau Beatdown

Three gloom warriors posted to Bon Air’s gnarliest AO to get their week started right. Here’s how it went:

Warmarama: Mosey to the other side of the Stone House for SSH x 20, IW x 15, Helicopters x 15, DQs x 10, Freddie Mercuries x 20, APDs x 10, mosey to the tree line for:

COP 1: Bear Hike. See that line of five trees? Bear crawl along them and do ascending sets of merkins at each along the way: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.

COP 2: Batteau Ultra. IP run (6 does a burpee) around the path from the playground down to the lake and the base of the Hill of Ill Repute.

COP 3: Triple Check of Ill Repute. Pax 1 runs up hill to wooden bridge (FH 9 marker) and back; PAX 2 and 3 do partner leg tosses. This just sucked. Big time.

BTTF for some old man stretching.

COT: Numbers, names, and YHC took us out. Prayers for Florence’s M/I/L, and for the nurses, teachers and other front line heroes helping us through this pandemic. Make it a great one!

  • BLIMP Ride For One Plz

    BLIMP Ride For One Plz

It was a quiet Monday morning in Forest Hill Park this morning. YHC posted with a fresh head full of ideas from the Exicon. It went down like this. After some brief stretching at the tennis court, the solo beatdown started.

B.L.I.M.P.S. was on the menu today and it goes down like this:

Six rounds, four corners each, with running between each corner. First round 10 Burpees at each corner, second round 20 lunges at each corner, third round 30 imperial walkers, fourth round 40 merkins, fifth round 50 plank jacks, and sixth round, 60 squats. That little routine took up the better part of the time, but there was a few minutes to spare before YHC’s carriage turned into a pumpkin…

So ran on down to the bottom of the hill of ill repute, then ran back up stopping at each light pole for 10 merkins. Back up to the flag for some quiet reflection.

  • B.O.M.B.S. Over Batteau

    B.O.M.B.S. Over Batteau

Two Hot Potato Warriors showed up this morning for a humidity filled 45 minutes of body conditioning. In typical Batteau fashion the hot potato was warming in the oven, and Double Mint put on his work gloves and picked it up.

We started with a mosey on down to to top of the steps near the storage yard for some lite stretching. First order of business was side straddle hops, then Don Quixotes, russian solders, then a few other stretches that are escaping YHC.

YHC picked up the potato having just read the Exicon at the stop lights on the drive over, and had some ideas. Moseyed on down to the bottom of the hill of ill repute for a little modified B.O.M.B.S action. First person runs to the first light pole and back again, while the second person is churning through 100x Burpees, 100x Over-Head Claps, 100x Merkins, 100x Big Boy Situps – which became regular WW2s, and 100x Squats. Finishing all of this in record time YHC and Double Mint had to go back up the hill some how.

Lunges up to the first light pole then 100 flutter kicks, mosey up to next light pole and 50 WW2s, mosey up to the next light pole and 50 LBCs. By that time it was getting close so mosey on back to the flag for a final bit of sweat.

Freddie Mercury’s, Fudskies, and Wilsons, and that is a wrap.

Moleskin: It was a good humid morning and YHC was very glad to have some company. Happy to hear the good news on Double Mint attaining his Black Belt in Taekwondo (correct me if I am getting that right). YHC barely has time to make dinner every night while Double Mint has been putting in the extra effort to attain this amazing accomplishment. Very impressive, so big congrats. I wish him well on his next adventure in Boxing!

Bonus points to anyone who can name the type of boat in the picture!

See you all in the Gloom.

  • Two Keydets, One Hill

    Two Keydets, One Hill

In typical YHC fashion, just a few days late with the BB. Batteau was looking pretty quite when YHC arrived on Monday morning, but thankfully another Keydet showed up to join in the fun. In typical Batteau fashion there was a big steaming hot potato waiting for us when we got there. Flatline picked up the potato to start us off with some warm-up exercises that consisted of… Helicopters, Donny Q’s, reverse scopions, and several other exercises that are escaping YHC’s memory now.

The potato was passed on to YHC, and having just read through the Exicon before exiting the car, the ideas were flowing. Mosey on down to the bottom of the hill, and since there were two of us, a little Burp-Back-Mountain was in store. Burp-Back-Mountain went like this. One of us is at the bottom of the hill and starts doing 100 Burpees, the second person does Bernie Sanders up to the first light pole then runs back down to pick up on the Burpees, while the other is Bernie Sanders-ing up the hill to the light pole, and so on and so forth until we get to 100 Burpees. THEN mosey on up to the next light pole up the hill, rinse and repeat, this time 100 WW2’s if YHC recalls and Bernie Sanders up the hill to the next light pole. Next came 100 Merkins, but no Bernie Sanders, that was replaced with Bear Crawl. Then last but not least 300 air squats/lunges with Bernie Sanders run up the hill. This was more than enough for the two Keydets to get done, so we moseyed on back to the flag after all was said and done.

Flatline took us out with some very thoughtful and calming words. It was a heck of a morning and YHC is probadly forgetting some things. Very thankful to have Flatline join YHC that morning. It was a great start to the week!

  • Batteau By Yourself

    Batteau By Yourself

One lone PAX at Batteau this morning ready to do battle against the fart sack. Thankfully YHC did a quick read through the Exicon and Lexicon and was fresh full of ideas.

YHC started out with some light warm-up stretches, then quickly proceeded to do the first exercise – Burp Back Mountain. This usually requires two but since there was one, it was modified and YHC did everything. Started out at the bottom of the big hill, did 10x burpees then Bernie Sanders up to the first light pole, then run back down, and repeat the run 5x. Do 10 more burpees, then Bernie Sanders hill run 5x, and repeat until 10 rounds are complete – 100 total burpees.

YHC overestimated and it took the entire time to complete the entire thing. Moseyed back up to the top after completion and there was a quick prayer and no announcements 😉

Can’t wait to break out Burp Back Mountain next time to share this great routine.

  • Hey mister, are you lost?!

Out of the foggy gloom a lone runner approached the gathering of dark clad gloom warriors. The lean figure masked with silver shocks of beard and long hair slowed and approached with confidence, joining the circle of men as naturally as any veteran. Not a word was spoken initially, each man asking the same question silently – Hey mister, are you lost?! The dawn of epiphany struck Upchuck first, who welcomed Swiper to the fold, making sure to point out the man’s Covid growth made him nearly unrecognizable. Time struck 0530 and the PAX hurled themselves into humid glory – here is how the creatures living in Swiper’s beard tell the tale…

Between the humidity and the dew we all carried at least an extra pound of liquid in our clothing by the end. Appreciate you gents letting me lead today! SYITG
  • For those about to ROCK ….

For those about to ROCK ….

Two road weary, grizzled old men posted to Batteau this morning to turn it up to 11. Here’s how it sounded..

*YHC picked a rock. Dr. Try Hard got a ROCK. I’ll let him speak to the wisdom of his choice.

NMMS: Sh!t gets real when you’ve got a two man pax, a couple of stones to carry, and some steep-ass stairs. By Round 2, Try Hard and I were getting down to brass tacks about the things that matter most to most of us. Doing hard things together is a great way to start your week and your morning.

  • Two city dwellers, an SOJ, and a down range PAX walk into a park…

4 warriors of the gloom arrived to Batteau looking to explore one of RVAs beautiful parks. Unfortunately (fortunately?) they were distracted by some burpees along the way. Q sheet was empty today so a hot potato was in order for the day!

    COP (EF Hutton)

Mosey to a lower area between two sets of stairs for various excercises including:

    • SSH
    • Imperial Walkers
    • Helicopters
    • Flutter kicks
    • Merkins

    THANG 1 (EF Hutton)

Mosey to the pond for a lap and 2 burpees at each lamp post. Stay there and 2 rounds in cadence of step up/kicks, feelings, and dips on the adjacent picnic tables. Toss the potato.

    THANG 2 (Faceplant)

Conveyor belt type deal with 1 PAX doing flutter kicks at top of closest hill, 1 doing LBCs, 1 doing squats, 1 running hill to relieve the PAX doing flutters. 2 rounds each. Mosey to top of hill by way of lunges to first light pole, pause for 20 merkins. Bear crawl to next light pole, then 10 burpees OYO. Toss the potato

    THANG 3 (Boberry)

Mosey through the woods to near pickle ball courts. Grab a coupon (rock) for various exercises while other half of the PAX runs to light pole and Bernie back to the bottom. Exercises included:

Mosey BTTF for a few minutes of Mary. Numberama, Namerama, EF Hutton took us out.

    NMS
If you have not posted to Batteau before YHC would suggest you are careful of missing bricks on the path and stairs as well as the aggressive curbing in the “parking lot”. Also ask Faceplant about a new way to avoid the gnats.
Enjoyed the conversation with the PAX today. Shoutout to Posse for posting down range from CLT. As Posse said, EF Hutton your day can only get better. SYITG gents!

  • That Was a Prostitute, Not a Ho.

Three chiseled veterans shoved off the lure of the Fart Sack for this week’s version of the Batteau Hot Potato. Temps were sunny and 70. With neither a watch nor a Swirly in sight, the Pax christened the dawn with:

A brief Mosey to the near lawn for an UpChuck Q:

    SSH’s x20
    Swirly’s Dead Man Hang x10
    IW’s x10
    Hillbillies x10 (with flair x5)
    FKs x20
    LBCs x20
    HRMs x10

Mosey to the Tennis Courts to perform a Prostitute (always come back to the same corner):

    Corner 1: 10 WWIIs
    Corner 2: 20 merkins
    Corner 3: 30 Reverse Crunches
    Corner 4: 40 Monkey Humpers

Pax go to corner 1, perform the exercise, then return to home base and perform 1 burpee. Then, restart, but this time go to Corner 1, then Corner 2, then back to Corner 1 and to home base. Repeato and extend by an additional corner on each round.

    Do not touch any trees.

    Flip it to Flatline:

Mosey to the Stone Basin for a Triple Check. 20 step ups (each leg), 40 monkey humpers, and 60 SSHs. Between each round, run up the Hill of Ill Repute (YHC thinks that’s what it’s called) to the lamppost. Circle the lamppost.

Do not touch any lampposts or trees.

    Mosey to the Lake:

Merkin Lake. 5 merkins at each lamppost around the lake. There are 142 lampposts (YHC lost count)

    Flip it to Hardywood:

    Mosey up the stone stairs.

    Triple check:

First man does squats with a stone.
    Second man does dips.
Third man runs to the telephone pole, circles the telephone pole, then runs down the stone steps to the landing, then back to the top of the steps. Rotate.

Do not touch any telephone poles, lampposts, or trees.

BTTF for 3 MOM. Flutter kicks (Vinny style), LBCs, Flutter kicks (regular), and maybe something else.

    Announcements:

YHC would like to have a nice family vacation this week. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

There are some folks in need of healing. Let’s have their backs.

    NMS:

Some days just start right. Today was one of those. Good morning with 2 fantastic friends, a good workout, and an overall good time. Thank you, gentlemen.

  • Vacation is over

Two Keydets showed at Batteau this morning, one coming off a nice family beach vacation, the other getting ready to go into a similar battle in the coming days. in typical Batteau fashion the hot potato had the Q this morning.

YHC moseyed everyone over to tennis courts for some good stretching. It went like this – various reps of Donny Q’s, helicopters, imperial soldiers, right leg over left leg, the reverse, Fuddskies, Wilsons, and some side straddle hops to get the blood pumpin.

Mosey over to the parapet area where we proceeded with three rounds of 10 incline merkins, 15 dips, run to the top of the hill and back. To balance out the muscle groups, next three rounds included 20 WW2s and 30 flutter kicks.

Flatline took the potato and ran us down to the lake. First lap around the lake 3x merkins at each light pole, second lap 5x jump squats at each light pole.

Mosey back up the hill to the tennis courts with time to spare for a little Mary. We did some WW2s, hand release merkins, Freddie Mercury’s, plank at various heights, and some other fun exercises that have escaped my memory.

Back to the flag for names and numbers. YHC appreciated having some quality Keydet time with a fellow alum that he has great respect for. Flatline took us out with some kind words.

Also props to Flatline for posting while on family vacation!
