  • Bias Towards Action

“Mastery requires both impatience and patience. The impatience to have a bias toward action, to not waste time, and to work with a sense of urgency each day. The patience to delay gratification, to wait for your actions to accumulate, and to trust the process.”-James Clear

Three studs fresh of of Father’s Day festivities arose to greet the dawn of a new day. According to legend and the Karens on NextDoor, the hot potato Q went a little something like this.

    Hardywood takes the first shift.

  • A Trip Down Exicon Lane

Feeling like groundhog day, the same three warriors descend upon Forest Hill Park as last Monday. When Hardywood asked what YHC did this past weekend, YHC really had to think hard because every weekend just seems to be the same thing over and over. Where’s the excitement in that. In an effort to mix it up YHC decided to paruse the good ole’ F3 Lexicon and Exicon for some fresh ideas.

What started out as a hot potato quickly became a full on Q and YHC didn’t even know it. In typical Swirley fashion, we moseyed on down to the coupon pick up zone but no coupons for us this morning. Swirley lead us in proper stretching

YHC recalls the following, some bending over and touching toes, helicopters, right foot over left foot and touch the toes and vis-a-versa, merkins, and WW2s. As Swirley went on, YHC decided to try and impress the PAX and volunteer for the next hot potato. YHC took the potato and the PAX moseyed on over to the great valley of Forest Hill Park.

Arriving at the valley YHC introduced the PAX to the run routine called Hindenberg BLIMPS which is modified version of BLIMPS. YHC further modified the routine from 6 rounds to 10, because we just wanted to be extra on a Monday morning. It goes down like this – picked four points, two on either side of the valley to make an approximate square. Round one starts out with 10 reps of an exercise at each of the four points of the square, with of course running in between to get to each corner. Started with 10 reps for round 1, then 20 reps for round 2, 30 reps for round 3, and you quickly get the picture here, on up to 10 rounds. The exercises for each round was as follows:

    1. Burpees
    2. WW2s
    3. Plank Jacks
    4. Imperial Walkers
    5. Side Straddle Hops
    6. Freddie Mercury’s
    7. Group Merkins – PAX split up all 70 (24 each)
    8. Single Count Mountain Climbers
    9. High Knees
    10. Victory Lap – No reps, just run as fast as you can touching each corner

Some of the ones in the middle were a bit fuzzy to YHC due to the extremeness of this workout.

YHC tried to hand off the Q to Hardywood with just seconds to spare to try and get out of writing the BB, but Hardywood was too smart for those shenanigans. YHC moseyed the PAX back to the start and lead everyone in some final exercises that consisted of Wilson’s, Fudd’s, and finished out with the Have-a-Nice-Day in the cool grass while the rain fell on our faces.

    Always a pleasure gentlemen.

  • Sons Of Liberty

“Because a body of men, holding themselves accountable to nobody, ought not to be trusted by anybody.” The original T. Paine

Three freedom loving men exercised both choice and conscience without interference on the rights of others before dawn. They were not reactionary to the whims of the hour, but purposeful in laying the foundation for a life of long service and usefulness. According to legend it went a little something like this.

COP Swirly: Deadman Hang, Cross Leg Hang, SSH, Merkins, Fudds Wife, Wilsons Wife, Flutter Kicks.

Triple Check (Swirly): One partner runs the main circle, one partner does does, one partner does incline merkins.

Mosey to get coupons at the bottom of the hill and pass to Hardywood.

Escalating Four Corners With Coupon For Personal Growth

    Corner 1 10 squats

Corner 2 10 Ground To Overhead Press

    Corner 3 20 American Hammers

    Corner 4 10 Burpees

    Double Dora

One partner stays at bottom of the hill, one partner waits at the top of the hill and one partner starts running up the hill. The men at the top and bottom begin the dora exercise. The change over happens with the runner going up hill switches with the person exercising and they run down the hill to switch with the man exercising at the bottom of the hill.

    200 LBC

    300 SSH

    Mosey back to the flag.

  • Hero Cuts

Vinny Baseball was born at Batteau, so it only made sense for it to depart from Batteau. Was glad to be able to have BT experience what others have so eloquently described:

“F*$^ me! I’m so tired of being sore” – Hardywood (5/5 rotten tomatoes)

“Fun for the whole family” – Upchuck (there aren’t enough tomatoes)

I think ‘Ole BT got his groove back. Hero pitches were thrown. Hero cuts were taken. What a beautiful morning for some calisthenics, infield and BP.

  • Maybe Jerry Was Right

The secret to happiness is freedom. The secret to freedom is courage. Jerry Jones

3 studs rose to greet the dawn of a new day. It was 70 and sunny at Batteau. According to legend, it went a little something like this.

Mosey down to the bottom tennis courts.

    COP: SSH X 20, Dead Man Hang X 10, DQ X 10, IW X 10, LBC X 20, FC X 20, HRM, X 10, Arm Circles X 1

Mosey over to grab a coupon and run back up to the stone house circle.

Escalating 4 Corners – In each round hit corner on the way out and the way back in.

Corner 1 20 squats with coupon

    Corner 2: 20 American Hammers

  • Going Stag to the Batteau Prom …

After eight weeks of rehabbing a pissed-off piriformis, and armed with some gnarly COP fodder from his physical therapist, YHC decided it was time share the love. Rolling up to Batteau in an F3 tux (black shirt, black shorts), and with an F3 corsage (shovelflag), YHC realized at 05:29 that he’d be going to the dance solo. Here’s how it went:

Mosey to the stone circle for:

    SingleOP – SSHs x 20, Don Quixotes x 10, Cherry Pickers x 10, Hello Dollies x 10. Here’s where it gets glute-a-riffic:

    Alabama Prom Dates x 10

4 Count APDs (“Marching Glute Bridge” if you went to PT school. 1: up to APD postion, 2: left leg up to 90*, 3: switch legs, 4: recover) x 10.

Single Leg APDs x 10 each leg

Mosey to the boat house (burpee at each light post) for:

    THE THANG:

    M.I.L.F. Lap [Dance?]

    Merkins x 10; Imperial Walkers x 20; LBCs x 30; Freddie Mercuries x 40; take a lap up the stairs to Vinny’s Coupon Spot™ and back down.

Rinse and repeat for 10 sets. BTTF for:

Hands to Heaven x 10: This one is straight from Dr. TryHard’s mountain-top lab in PNG, where he’s working up some non-FDA approved fat killing vaccines to smuggle back stateside. Here’s the protocol for administering, per DTH:

“- Hands to Heaven (Inverse of Heels to Heaven… so from lying on your six with hands raised, sit up quickly to get weight over feet, then stand, hands remain above head so essentially getting from lying to standing without using hands…then sit and lie back down) “

So DTH must be the child of acrobat parents; or perhaps it was YHC’s beer gut getting in the way, but this Hands to Heaven thing was like a greased tapir getting out of a bathtub. YHC was reminded of some of the ukemi drills from his aikido days, so modified to a rolling Never Surrender. Me vs. me. YMMV

SingleOT: Prayers for strength, peace and courage to all the health care workers on the front lines for us (you too Flatty!); and for those of us on the front lines at home holding together families with so much uncertainty about jobs, bills, school and health.

NMMS: A solo beatdown is a different kind of challenge; but its also a chance to flex the “do what you promised you would do when nobody else is watching” muscle. Also got me thinking about the saying that the obstacle is the way — looked it up when I got back home: Marcus Aurelius; Meditations 5.20 “Now it is true that [difficulties] may impede my action, but they are no impediments to my affects and disposition, which have the power of acting conditionally and changing: for the mind converts and changes every hindrance to its activity into an aid; and so that which is a hindrance is made a furtherance to an act; and that which is an obstacle on the road helps us on this road.” Go get some!

    See ya in the gloom..

  • Picnic For Two

Two Mondays in a row, Swirly posted solo to Batteau. YHC told him yesterday he’d have company today. Away we went.

COP: SSHs / DQs / Helicopters / Imperial Walkers

Young Man’s Game: I saw a neighbor trying this last week, so I decided to BETA test it with Swirly. I doubt we’ll be seeing it again, but it was worth a shot. Broad Jump then six quick backwards shuttle steps to the original jumping point. Repeat x 10. On tennis courts at least, this was very jarring.

Line Tracers: Tennis Courts – out and back, tracing all lines. After each of the three rounds, a 20 set of varying Merkins.

Downhill From Here: Mosey to the rock lockers. Grab a rock. 8 rounds that included sets of 10 of varying exercises: Curls / Standing Presses at the top; Incline Merkins / Dips at the bottom. (Vinny may have called for dinosaurs near the end of this).

Clean-Up: Grab a picnic table. Three sets x 10 each. Incline Merkins / Dips / Step Ups (5 per leg).

NMS: I’m embarrassed to say how long it’s been since I posted to Batteau. It was awesome getting out this morning and hanging with Swirly. Great opportunity to grab a sweat and catch up.

Small group workouts are as much about mental health as physical health. Virtual beatdowns are good for now, but they can’t replace what we truly have. Stay safe and even keeled.

  • Solo

Party of one at Batteau this morning .

It was a windy rainy solo run around the park and neighborhood.

    See y’all in the gloom..
