  • My Apologies to Poe

Once upon a midday dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

Over many a quaint and curious Backblast of forgotten lore

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,

As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

“There’s a white animal”, I muttered “tapping at my chamber door—

    Only this and nothing more.”

    Ah, distinctly I remember it was 2 months past December;

And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.

Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow

From backblasts surcease of sorrow, my Backblast, the task before

For the rare and radiant Backblast which one would say was not a bore

And so, we’ll do 5 Burpees at each schoolhouse door!

We did SSHs, Imperial Walkers, Don Quixotes and stretched a little more

The lights were still off, before we approached the first schoolhouse door.

Where’s Lighthouse and Offshore? No Fudd or ByProduct! We did 20 KB exercises but before

We traveled to the next schoolhouse door, we did 5 Burpees more

    Atilla said, “5 Burpees more”

And so it went. We circumnavigated the school stopping at each schoolhouse door to do the following:

    20 Swings

    20 Curls

    20 Upright rows,

    20 Triceps

    15 Sit and Press

    20 Overhead press

    20 Goblet Squats

    20 Renegade Rows

20 Situps with feet anchored by bells

    20 Lawnmower pulls

    20 Overhead pulls

    20 Halos

20 Step ups (10 each leg)

    20 Swings

    20 Curls

    15 Upright rows,

Each time Followed by 5 Burpees

Between the doors, Rifle carry, waiter carry, around the world and Lunge walk.

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,

    “Whitesnake” said I, “or White Deer”, truly your forgiveness I implore;

If I had Fart-sacked I’d still be napping, and so gently you came rapping,

And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door

That I scarce was sure I heard you, here I opened wide the door

    Darkness there and nothing more

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,

    In there slid a stately Whitesnake of the saintly days of yore;

    Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;

But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door—

Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door—

Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

And the Whitesnake, tongue is splitting, still is sitting, still is sitting

    On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;

And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,

    And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;

And my body from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

Quoth the Whitesnake “5 Burpees More”!

  • Mythology of White Deer

The Chickasaw story “Ghost of White Deer” is one of the most well known Native American legends.  I am going to tell it terribly and wrongly.

A brave young Circus Maximus warrior, Atilla, fell in love with Bright Moon, the daughter of a chief (possibly a F3 runner with recent knee troubles). The chief did not like the young man, so he created a price for the bride that he was sure Atilla could not pay.

“Bring me the hide of White Deer,” said the chief. The Circus Maximus believed that all white animals were magical. “The price for my daughter is one White Deer,” the chief laughed. He knew that an albino deer was very rare and would be very hard to find. White Deerskin was the best material to use in a wedding dress, and the best White Deer skin came from the albino deer.

Atilla went to text and then went to his beloved, Bright Moon. “In one moon’s time, I will return with your bride price and we will be married. This I promise you.” Taking his best bow and his sharpest arrows, Atilla began to hunt.

Three weeks went by. Atilla was hungry, lonely, still gassy and scratched by briars. Then, one night during a full moon, Atilla saw White Deer, who seemed to drift through the moonlight in a weird side straddle hop. White Deer walked around the school, leading Atilla, a down range Garden Nomad and the other six Circus Maximus band of brothers on an upper body focused workout.  At each red door, they did 10-20 reps of either curls, halos, lawn mower pulls, high pulls, sit and press along with some lunges, step ups and death crawls.

At the end, when the deer was very close to where Atilla grunted, he shot his sharpest arrow. The arrow sank deep into the deer’s heart. But instead of sinking to its knees to die, White Deer began to run (which has not been seen for years). Instead of running away, he charged straight toward Atilla, with his red eyes glowing and his horns sharp and menacing…

Time passed and Atilla did not return as he had promised Bright Moon. But Bright Moon never took any other young man as a husband, for she had a secret. When the moon was shining as brightly as her name, Bright Moon would often see White Deer in the smoke of the campfire, doing his weird side straddle hop, with an arrow in his heart. She lived believing White Deer would finally fall, and Atilla would return.

To this day White Deer is sacred to the Circus Maximus people.

  • Pre-Snow Festivities

Great work from the PAX today.  Fudd tried to sabotage the 5x; he just started making up his own routine.   Great work by Offshore.  There is no better way to comfort an ailing back than a 45 pound cannonball.  Pigskin continues to be a marvel.  A great way to start the day.

God is good all of the time!

  • White Deer you missed Homer

So, finally, Homer came to Circus Maximus and White Deer missed him.

After some initial confusion about who is Qing, we did a warm up. After warm up, we did Lucky Loop: 20 Lawnmower Pulls (each hand), 30 Curls, 20 Overhead Pulls (30 for overachievers), 20 Skull Crushers, 20 Squats, 20 Lunges, 30 Swings, 10 Burpies (to welcome Homer back), 20 Around-the-World, 20 Sit and Press, 20 Flutter Presses, 20 High Pulls.

Great to see Homer back, but too bad White Deer could not come. We missed a lot of his jokes.

  • Repeating is not a bad Q strategy

I came on the relatively warm confines of MGHS (AKA the bomb shelter) to find the temperatures approaching a non-sunny 50 degrees, not bad for 1/19. 5 others joined me in a KB workout. I decided due to limited brain capacity to replicate the coupon workout I led yesterday but with kettlebells. I made a couple modifications.

COP: DQs, DMH, HRMs, FMs and arm circles. I don’t vary the COPs very much. The FMs did drive a couple of backblasts. Mosey to bus loop.

Triple check (we had 6 – awesome): Coupon bench presses, coupon flutters (switched to LBCs) and run around the loop. Mosey to run parallel to Pump.

Elevens with sit and presses and merkins. Mosey back to bus loop.

Four corners with 10 burpees, 20 2 count mountain climbers, 30 squats and 40 curls for the of age girls. Mosey to home base.

Rifle carry across parking lot, run back, bear crawl back for coupon, rifle carry again.

Ended workout with American hammers and DQs.

Prayers for Attila’s family, Offshore’s friend, Corned Beef’s mom and anyone on the mend physically or mentally. There is the Frozen Triangle this Saturday where there are details a plenty on Slack. Also, Crucible is going to start 10K training on 2/11. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to lead.

  • Wear Red

Sometimes, life is fragile. We had a Pax member in Knoxville, Cardinal, who lost his life, at an F3 workout, on his virgin Q. There is a “go fund me” set up. See 2nd F on Slack for more information (Look for Greenbow, today at 7:30AM). People are asked to Wear Red is Cardinal’s memory.

Also, an F3 brother in Richmond, Jon Michael Freeze lost his life after a run at Christmas time. This is a reminder to appreciate those around you.

And please bring phones with you at your workouts. You never know if you’re going to need them.

The workout went like this. First, Music Maestro!

20 SSH, 20 IWs, 10 Don Quixote, Arm stretch, hamstring stretch

Countdown: 20 Upright rows, 18 Deep Mountain Climbers (single count), 16 Upright rows, 14 Deep Mountain Climbers, etc. This is a favorite quicky workout for me!

    20 Swings

    20 Hammer Curls

    20 Upright Rows

    20 Triceps

    15 Sit and press

    20 Press

    20 Squats Goblet

    Run around the island

11s Squats and Sit and Press with Rifle carry between locations

    Run around the island

11s curls and swings with Rifle carry between locations

    10 Burpees

8s: swings and curls (single count)

20 Dollies, 15 Crunchy Frogs, stretch (right hand/right foot, left hand/left foot)

Elbow plank to count of 60

    Number-rama

    Name-o-rama

    Frozen triangle

Prayers for those going thru a time of grief., even when the loss has been expected.

  • Break on Through to the Other Side

The joggers too out of breath to say “good morning” caught glimpses of the following as they ran away before Fireman Ed could sentence them to burpees:

COP: SSHs, IWs, DQs, Merkins, Pickle Pounders IC

Mosey to Godwin HS door #13 for 13 Tricep Presses. Proceed around the school, completing a variety of exercises, with the reps matching the red door numbers. For example, at door #9, PAX did 9 Overhead Pulls, at door #8, 8 Overhead Pulls, at door #7, 7 Overhead Pulls. At one door, Lighthouse requested Curls which he would later regret.

The PAX asked about the brown doors and their numbers. YHC assured them he would keep a running total. The PAX completed all 23 red doors.

PAX took a lap around the bus loop, and YHC announced that the brown doors totaled 400 and challenged them to check his math. The PAX split into partners and dropped the lighter heavier kettlebell. One PAX walks around the bus loop performing Curls while the other runs the other way around, relieves the partner, and flapjack. Partners completed 400 curls total.

    BTTF for American Hammers IC.

Announcements: Gypsy is still collecting shoes. Frozen Triangle 1/21. Prayers for the Freezes, Cobles, and Hunns.

    NMS:

YHC believes this is the first time that all of the red doors were completed at Circus, thus the BB title. The sneaky part about a doors workout is staying under weight the entire time, but the PAX crushed it. YHC intended a “full glam” arms-only workout to preserve the legs for the Snowy Owl, but lapsed by calling Step Ups at door #11. Credit to the DR PAX at The Galaxy for the “stupid” 400 curl exercise. Nobody wanted to be YHC’s partner, and then everyone wanted to be Pigskin’s partner.

Fudd and Pigskin discussed plans for their upcoming trip to Honduras along with Gomer. Necesitamos practicar mas espanol en Fin Oeste.

YHC requests our (non)resident grammarian Vinny to check the capitalization in the backblast – the internets can’t seem to agree.

  • 12s and 29s

Four eager beavers including me took a tour of the roads around Mills Godwin high school.

COP: DQs, helicopters, HRMs, FMs, DMH run the bus loop.

Exercises: There were two dice and six exercises for each dice. First dice was for 12 reps. Second dice was for 29 reps. Dice 1 – burpees, sit and press, lawn mower pulls – 2 count, overhead pulls, sumo squats and halos. Dice 2 – bicep curls, bench press, flutter kicks with coupon – 2 count, LBCs – no coupon, SSHs – no coupon and dips – no coupon.

We would mosey to different areas around the school sometimes having to lunge, sometimes rifle carry and sometimes just carrying the da#n coupon. We had the tendency to pick SSHs which made me ban SSHs. We also seemed to like sumo squats and lawn mower pulls. We made the estimated half mile trek around the school and still had time for a mountain climber, American hammer, DQ and DMH cool down.

Prayers for Attila’s mother n law and Florence’s in laws. Convergence is at Dogpile at 6 a.m. (that is early) on 12/31. There is a run to different AOs in January. I forget the name of it because I sometimes am a bad listener. Just ask my M. It was great seeing Florence make the trip up north and I continue to be amazed at what Pigskin can do with a bad back at Triple Respect. And it is always good to see our site Q Attila.

Hopefully Mike White can bring the Jets back to their winning ways this weekend. Do great things.
