  • Just 45 Minutes

Consistency and discipline builds strength.  Three loyal members of the PAX linked arms for another Thursday morning of clanging KBs, and here is how it went down:

    • COP
      • 25 SSH
      • 25 IW
      • 25 helicopters
      • 10 2x merkins
      • 25 2x LBC
      • 15 pickle pounders
      • 10 burpees
    • Lucky Bus Loop – farmers carry to the four quadrants of the bus loop, perform 15 reps of a certain exercise, adding a new exercise for each quadrant, with a total of 8 at the end
      • Lawnmower pulls – each arm (8x)
      • High pulls (7x)
      • Sit ‘n presses (6x)
      • KB swings (5x)
      • Lunges (4x)
      • Halos (3x)
      • American hammers (2x)
      • Weighted squats
    • Farmers carry the bus loop
    • COT with YHC taking us out

Great work by the PAX today.  A lot of clipboarding/mumble chatter between J’ville and White Deer, but all in all, it was a long 45 minutes.  There was no way YHC was going to get confused and stretch this 1 hour.  Enough pain in 45 minutes of this beatdown.

God is good all the time!

  • The Night We Saw Them All

A PAX eclipsing 40 ditched all common sense for about 18 hours to receive a plentiful helping of each of the three Fs.  This was the F3RVA Century Classic.

YHC has conversed with a number of individual PAX members about their experience, taking notes during the event and thinking about how to transcribe all of these memories into a backblast.  There is no way YHC could do the stories justice by attempting to capture them for the collective PAX.  Then, after chatting with Lockjaw and the (sober) Ronnie, it became clear.  Treat the backblast as a living backblast.  YHC will make no attempt to capture the essence of this workout, only setting the stage for each and every PAX member to capture it for himself.

My memories are collected below.  I encourage everyone to add to this list by commenting with your favorite memory.

Leg 1:  Trying to contain my energy for the CSAUP while stuck in traffic for opening night of the squirrels game
Leg 2:  Praying for Saab on Meadowbridge and Atlee Rd.  Kudos to all that ran that leg, a true game of frogger
Leg 3:  All the Mechanicsville PAX member who were not running, companion running with the actual runners.  Kudos!
Leg 4:  The Creek parking lot is great for fellowship.  This truly felt like a tailgate parking lot.  The energy, games and conversation were all electric.
Leg 5:  The headlamp on my run reflecting all the pollen flying through the air with me initially thinking it was raining.  30 minutes later realizing all that pollen was being sucked into my lungs at an incredible rate.
Leg 6:  Hearing of TYA and Swirly questioning if YHC actually marked his legs of the course and me telling them where they can shove it.
Leg 7:  Realizing how peaceful and quiet the city can be when when you are in it and surrounded by trees.  The new moon highlighted the stars and all their brilliance.
Leg 8:  Showing up to Hoedown and having Ronnie greet us after his enjoyable evening.
Leg 9:  Marv almost taking out another animal with his running shoes.
Leg 10:  Thinking about how comfortable it is to try to sleep on the top of a picnic table.
Leg 11:  Watching the back and forth between Saab complaining about not being able to sleep and Upchuck for waking him up.
Leg 12:  Waving to the UR security guard while sitting in a white van with 4 men laying on the ground.  He waved and continued by.
Leg 13:  Marv learning that Fudd was going to show up only for leg 18 and would still get a tshirt.
Leg 14:  Seeing Lockjaw drive 20 in a 45 on Charter Colony so he could stay between the lines.
Leg 15:  Reminding Marv that Fudd was still sleeping.
Leg 16:  Hearing of a certain individual’s multiple escapades to the bathroom at a singular Wawa.
Leg 17:  Making the van take a 3 mile detour to Wawa so YHC could get a breakfast hoagie, thus missing the final hand-off.
Leg 18:  Pulling into Dogpile, realizing it was almost over and thinking the whole experience was too fast.

This humble correspondent would like to thank everyone involved with making this event successful, especially those listed in the QIC list.  Without it, this would have been a completely stupid and utterly failure of an event.

    Splinter out.

  • Threesome

Johnsonville accepted the hot potato Q and YHC serves as his scribe.  We were joined by the bag of hot air known as White Deer, and here is what transpired:

    • COP
      • 50 SSH
      • 15 IW
      • 15 DQ
      • 15 Hillbillies
      • 10 2x merkins
    • Mosey to bus loop for a series of Triple Plays, aka triple checks
      • #1 – KB presses, weighted lunges, wall sit
      • #2 – skull crushers, rotating wall planks, curb crawl with 5 merkins
      • #3 – lawnmower pulls (left and right), KB swings
      • #4 – sit-n-presses, American hammers, run
    • Mosey to the parking lot for 15 box cutters and 15 APDs
    • COT with YHC taking us out

A faithful PAX enjoyed the fellowship.  Lots of soreness beforehand.  KBs will only exacerbate that issue.  Good luck to those doing the CSUAP.   You are a special breed.

God is good all the time!

  • Spring Broken

It is April, but it was cold.  Numbers were light due to spring break, sickness/injuries and a fearsome Southside fartsack.  A pair of noble warriors still answered the call, and here is what transpired:

    • COP
      • 25 SSH
      • 25 IW
      • 15 DQ
      • 25 FM
      • 10 2x merkins
      • 25 LBC
      • 20 Helicopters
    • Mosey to bus loop for a modified game of catch me if you can
      • 3 stopping points along the bus loop where you do 10 burpees
      • Double-weighted carry between burpees
      • 2 total loops/60 burpees
    • KB beast down/back bus loop (weighted carries between stops)
      • Sit ‘n presses
      • High pulls
      • Overhead shoulder presses
      • Swings
      • Halos
      • Lawnmower pulls (each arm)
    • Mosey to the parking lot for COT with YHC taking us out

This was a workout that the PAX just had to gut through.  Everyone was tired, and we were under weight for the entire workout.  The mid-week malaise as well as the burpees led to a quiet workout.  Solid work though.  Motion to Mother Nature to put an end to this cold weather crap…do I have a second?

God is good all the time!

  • The Silent treatment

4 Kettlebell veterans came to Circus Maximus in search of black ice. With none to be found we did:

COP – SSH, Merkins, Flutterkicks, Hillbillies, Willie Mays Hays.

Line up kettlebell in rows in 4 stations: 20 of each- Swings, Squats, Lawn mower puls, and Lunges. 3 times through. Squeeze in some Mary between roatins: WWII and Freddy Mercurys. Also 50 Reverse Crunches

Curb crawls , up to 8. Then 3 min of Boat-Canoe.  Grab a curb- 2 sets of 20 skull crushers and pullovers.

Head back to flag for rotating dealers choice including Burpees,  merkins, APDs, Curls, and LBCs.

NMS – Either Atilla has taken a vow of silence in order to grieve UVAs loss last Friday or he refused to give any ammunition to WHite Deer by being completely silent the whole beatdown. Jville shared how he was fresh off  litigation weights with his 2.0 at the gym last night. Just don’t forget to log miles for the upcoming  CSAUP.

All pax put in good work. There was no ice around the school and we stayed relatively dry. Always good to know Pax will be there regardless of how bad the weather.

  • Tariffs are Coming

Fartsack be damned!  3 noble warriors fought through the malaise and chill of the midweek.  Here is how the adhoc Q went down.

    • COP
      • 25 SSH
      • 25 IW
      • 10 burpees
      • 10 2x merkins
      • 25 2x LBC
      • 25 Helicopters
    • Lucky Bus Loop – farmers carry to the four quadrants of the bus loop, perform 15 reps of a certain exercise, adding a new exercise for each quadrant, with a total of 8 at the end
      • Lawnmower pulls – each arm (8x)
      • Deep squats (7x)
      • High pulls (6x)
      • Halos (5x)
      • Alternating weighted lunges (4x)
      • KB swings (3x)
      • Sit ‘n presses (2x)
      • American hammers (1x)
    • Run the bus loop
    • COT with YHC taking us out

YHC showed up with a new KB today, bright and shiny.  Put a few new chips and marks on this fine piece of Chinese craftsmanship.  Likely the prices will go up soon as tariffs will be levied on such imports.  White Deer was enthralled with how much bigger his equipment appeared to be.  He would not let it go.  It was as if he had never had the chance to say that to another man before?!?!?  Mumble chatter subsided as the reps grew.  Funny how that happens.  Good work from a faithful PAX today.

God is good all the time!

  • 11s rule Circus Maximus

Three of the faithful came out to Circus Maximus. It was cold and the ground was wet — perfect conditions for gloom. Johnsonville took Q, and this is what went down (sort of):

warmup with ssh, don quiotes, merkins, imperial walkers, arm circles.

11s with donkey kicks along school’s wall and swings by SF.

11s with curb crawls incline merkins / skull crushers

20 lawnmower pulls & run around track <– rinse and repeat for 5 sets.

Moleskin: I am within the 1 week grace period for posting this. That is acceptable, right?

  • March Comes in Like a Lion

Offshore piloted this AMRAP beat down a few weeks back.  Today, March came in like a lion, and only noble warriors could withstand the high reps at high weights.  Here is how it went down.

    • COP
      • 20 SSH
      • 20 IW
      • 10 2x merkins
      • 20 2x LBC
      • 10 pickle pounders
      • 10 burpees
      • 20 helicopters
    • AMRAP challenge – rotation of 5 exercises over a 30-35 second period, with reduced rest after each rotation; rests start at 20 seconds and move down to 15, 10 and 5 seconds
      • Weighted squats
      • High pulls
      • Weighted lunges
      • Halos
      • KB swings
    • Run the bus loop
    • AMRAP challenge/version 2 – rotation of 3 exercises over a 30-35 second period, with reduced rest after each rotation, rests of 20, 15, 10 and 5 seconds
      • Overhead pulls
      • Sit ‘n presses
      • Skull crushers
    • Run the bus loop
    • 20 lawnmower pulls – each arm x2
    • Run the bus loop
    • COT with YHC taking us out

Based upon the mumblechatter, one would think that YHC has a beef with Honeydo.  Contrary to assertions made, I do not hate his arms.  I warned that the last sets of exercises had burnout qualities.  For the lawyers in attendance, appropriate disclaimers were made.

Solid work by the PAX today.  Good pace, and hopefully we will reap the benefits later.  Really fun group.  A blessing to Q today.

God is good all the time!

  • Rock the bells

A PAX of five posted for this week’s Circus Maximus.  We assembled in the pretty parking lot and after some conversation about who might take the Q that morning, we jumped in and started with the following, roughly in cadence:  SSHs, Imaginary Jumpropes, Imperial Walkers, Don Quixotes, Hillbillies, Shoulder Taps, Figure Eights, and Arm Circles.

We grabbed our kettlebells and moved to the covered walkway adjacent to the bus loop.  We completed an 8 minute EMOM alternating Sit and Press and Overhead Press, targeting 15 to 20 reps each minute.  We followed with another 8 minute EMOM alternating KB Swings and Dead Weight Squats, targeting a similar number of reps as for EMOM one.  We finished EMOMs with a third 6 minute version with Standing Rows and Curls, again targeting 15 to 20 reps per minute.

We then completed a Weighted Nine, keeping our bells off the ground for 9 minutes – during which we walked with our weights and completed a range of holds, hangs, and exercises.  We finished with a couple of minutes of stretching and then a COT with Attila taking us out.

Good being with you guys.  Nice mumblechatter, but crappy cadence counting.  Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

Light crowd to this morning to celebrate the impending ascension of UVA hoops to the top of the basketball polls.  Great to have Offshore alongside to ensure that I would not be solo.  This workout was an oldie but goodie, a former favorite of Toga.  We had not done it since he fled the jurisdiction, so good to dig it back up.  No Johnsonville or White Deer.  They were missed, but I do not know if they were missing each other.  Rumor is they could be spooning in the fart sack.  Might need to send out a search party for Johnsonville to make sure he was not a casualty of White Deer’s dutch oven.

God is good all the time!
