  • So much for the supposed Snowpacolypse

Six strong were undeterred by the pending ice storm and found the Gloom quite hospitable for an early January morning. Red Baron joined us from PA (pretzeltown region?) again so YHC tried to cover some of the Dogpile favorites for him. We did:

COP: SSH, Don Qs, Imperial Walkers, Helicopters, Merkins, Flutterkicks, Scorpion Kicks.

Mosey over to other COP circle for some Bermuda Triangle. Bear crawl to 1st corner, 10 Burpees, run down to bottom, 20 HRMs, run up hill 30 WWIIs. 2nd round: lunge over corrner, 20 Dry Docks, bottom 30 Heels 2 Heaven, top 40 SSH. Mosey over to Penny stage: Dora 123. 100 Merkins, 200 Squats, 300 LBCs.

Down to Rusty Cage: 3 rounds of 8 Pullups. Then 3 rounds of 8 Jerkins. Over to Amphitheater with stop for 3 sets of 25 PLTs along the way. Bottom of Amphitheater partner up in 3s for Triple Check: Flutterkicks, Dips, & run steps and back. With liquified Sleet starting to fall we moved onto stage for few min or Mary and Ring of Fire. Mosey back to Flag , finish with 1 min of American Hammers. YHC took us out.

NMS: For the predicted poor weather it was warmer than usual and we stayed dry. Red Baron returned for his anniversary weekend in RVA again this year and at 68 can rival our own Pigskin for discovering the source of the Fountain of Youth. It was great that all 6 PAX were SOP and Senor Frog and Mr Rogers were short sleeved as well. Oyster used the beatdown to warm himself up for his Mixed Doubles Pickleball tournament later today. When he pegs a 60 yr old Grandmother with a shot YHC will be happy to take some credit.

  • 3+ miles, the easy way

7 of the hardest PAX around took a wrong turn and ended up at Dogpile for a not so easy 3+ miles.

Warmarama: Mosey to pump house road. SSH, Helicopters, Arm Circles, DQ, Imperial Walkers, Helicopers (YES, we did Helicopters 2x), Copperhead Squats, Carolina Dry Docks, Merkins and 1 Burpee.

  • Tidy Whities Tucked In and Putting on Shoes Before Pants

A Merry Eight, or 7.5 with Fudd’s early departure, kept the Dogpile flame going. A convoy of Pax came in with minutes to spare and we promptly departed on time.

Taking a back ways to the first circle, we formed a smaller intimate arrangement for COP to stay dry a little longer. COP was a bit of the usual plus some light yoga.

Off we went to the Rusty Cage for some Dora. Partner 1 – Run to the fire hydrant and perform 15 V-Ups. Partner 2 – 100 pull-ups/assisted pull-ups on the low bars, 200 box cutters, 300 shoulder taps.

Off to the Haf Penny Stage for an extensive touch a tree session. Started off with 9 tree and BTTW. 7 trees and wall sit. 5 trees and American Hammers. 3 trees and broad jump burpees. 1 tree and arm circles (somewhere Flashdance smiled with approval).

With all of the trees properly cared for, off we went to the big field for Red Barchetta. 10 yards, 10 HRM. 25 = 25 mountain climbers, 50 = 50 monkey bumpers, 75 = flutter kicks, and 100 = 100 LBCs.

Over to the poles for a round of pole smokers 20 in count. Circle up for a ring of fire, but a ring in which we all did the exercises. After 70-80 merkins, we emerged and made our way back to the flag.

Time for a few minutes of Mary and Shavasana.

    Honey Do took us out.

The title of the backblast is derived from a sampling of the strong mumble chatter this am. Coffee was excellent and most issues were discussed, and even some solved.

Enjoy the holidays with family and friends!

  • DogPile VQ – 5 Years in the Making

It has been five years in the making to get to this point, and YHC was so honored to see the 14 studs turnout, even a few that read the weather report wrong. We had everything from full pants to no pants, and everything in between. The deal still stood – if you bring a FNG YHC will take you and your FNG out to breakfast at Libbie Market – no FNGs were spotted today.

    Warmup

We started with a reminder about the mission of F3 then it was off to do some much overlooked and needed stretching. Then 25 SSHs, progressively getting faster, followed by a 10 merkin wave. Handshake said that YHC stole this idea but YHC really was just doing an homage to YHC’s pal.

    Thang

Following the warmup, it was off for a tour of the sites. YHC reminded everyone to mentally mark the flashing crosswalk because it would come into play later. Mosey to a new triangle near the pond for a triple check. Slight modification to the triple check, every time the timer/runner comes back the three of you do 3 burpees in unison. So timer runs while the other two do merkins for the first round and airsquats, second and third round goes from merkins to WW2s.

Finish up then its off to do an homage to EF Hutton, run down the road of pretty houses and at every SUV/Truck 5 merkins, car 5 WW2s, and convertibles 10 air-presses, but there were no convertibles. And for every Woodfin truck it was 20 burpees – no Woodfin trucks today.

At the end of the road take a left down the tunnel street for lunges, crabwalk, and bear crawls. At the end of the tunnel look what we have here but two Frisbees!

YHC reminded everyone to remember the flashing cross walk – the game is this, get the frisbee all the way to the flashing cross walk in under 5 minutes. If the frisbee touches the ground its 5 merkins for everyone. If we don’t get to the flashing crosswalk in 5 minutes its 20 burpees for everyone – race was on. soon everyone stopped catching and just threw the Frisbee as far as one could. We may need to do some ultimate practice. All arrived safely at the flashing cross walk.

Mosey to the valley behind the stage. Count off by 1-2-1-2, and for Upchucks case count off 1-2-1-2-1-2. He certainly followed directions. Once we were all into two teams, we paired up with an opponent for a game of Rock Paper Scissors. You and your partner play 10 rounds in the bottom of the valley, between each round you run back up the hill and meet back down in the middle of the valley. Winner of each game goes into plank and the looser of each game does 3 burpees. Rinse and repeat 10 times. After that the ultimate winner so the person with the most games won on team 1 and team 2 meets in the middle for the ultimate showdown – rest of the PAX is in plank and the Mr. Rogers and YHC faced off in a squat for best 2 out of three rounds. YHC was victorious, and the losing team had to do 25 merkins.

Mosey back to the flag for some stretching. This group means so much and are a great part of my day, thank you all for the opportunity to lead today.

Announcements: Rosie’s 12 days of Christmas on Tuesday, and don’t forget your present!

    YHC took us out!

  • 5th Edition of Magnum P.I.

On this beautiful Saturday morning almost exactly 43 years after the first episode of the original show, 20 HIMs posted for a serving of Gumbo. It went something like this:

Mosey to the COP circle and 2 laps around to warm up, then circle up for COP, including:

    • Higgins (DQs)
    • TCs (Helicopters)
    • Magnum Merkins (Tempo Merkins touching your stache to the ground)
    • Rick’s (six inches – Rick doesn’t do anything)
    • Hello Dollies
    • Copperhead squats
    • Imperial Walkers

    THANG

Mosey to Robin’s Nest (the Amphitheater) for the follwing

Honor the pilot episode 12/11/1980 with

    • 12 merkins – lap around the Amphitheater…audible- come down middle steps to avoid nastiness on the far side.
    • 11 squats – lap
    • 19 WWIIs – lap
    • 80 SSHs – lap
    • plank for the six

Honor the 162 episodes on the 18 stairs – 9 box jumps per stair going up and 9 dips coming down. Al Gore for the six.

Mosey back to the stage for Touch a Palm Tree. 8 rounds – 1 for each season. Round 1 touch 1 tree while partner does some form of merkin. Round 2, touch 2 trees while partner does some sort of ab exercise. All the way up to 8 trees – each partner does each round.

Mosey down to the Golden Triangle for a quick Volcano – bernie up the hill, 1 burpee, then jog around the triangle and back down.

Mosey back to the Flag and complete 78 SSHs for Tom Selleck – or as many as you can until time is called.

Numbers, Names, and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

    • 12 Days of Christmas – Rosie’s special treat to the PAX – NoToll 12/19. Still time to sign up for the gift exchange.
    • Liv has her first post-Chemo MRI on Friday – send those prayers up for some good news.
    • Oyster is counting the days until Pickleball is back at Batteau

    NMS:
Always great fun to put a Hawaiian shirt on and have some fun. A few strong staches out there today, but I think DTH took the crown this year. Well done Doc Holliday! Thank you all for coming out, and thank you to all those who supported YHC’s efforts to raise some money for Sportable (www.sportable.org). Much appreciated.

Lots of great mumblechatter today. But the cherry on the top today was discovering McGruff’s superpower – pickle pounders (hip dips). That boy can go. Look out Shakira. Sorry I missed coffeeteria – had to coach a basketball game.

    No More Gumbo for You!

  • Instructionally Challenged

11 Bootcampers and 2 Walkers met for what was believed for many to be Faceplants Dogpile VQ (5 years in the making) but they were delighted when it was realized it was a Handshake Q.

Mosey over to the Treeline between the 2nd Roundabout and the Hey Penny Stage for a quick COP

Mosey to the street just past the far side of the sunken field. 3 Burpees at every light on the left side of the street to the corner at the dog leg by the Tennis Courts (10 lightpoles total).

Mosey to the far side of the field and partner up (4 groups of 2 and 1 throuple). P1 in the Plank position with feet on the Swings and pull their feet back to their chest and back, P2 runs across the field and back, 3 rounds.

Circle Up. 25 WWI’s in cadence with opposite toe taps then 26 HRM’s, 26 WWI’s, and then 25 HRM’s 51 two-count SSH’s. Burpee Ring of Fire 1, person 1 does 15 total burpees but when they finish their 3rd then person 2 starts. Burpee Ring of Fire 2 the same way with 7 total burpees. Burpee Ring of Fire 3 the same way but with 1 Burpee.

Mosey to the far corner of the lake. Partner up and partners run the opposite direction around the lake and do 5 WWII’s.

Mosey back towards the flag, when at the corner by the former Police statue location stop and do 20 LBC’s in cadence. Continue to Mosey back to the flag and stop and partner up for 20 Boo-yeah Merkins. Mosey back to the flag for a singular round of Burpees. Finish with Upright APD’s.

Announcements – next Saturday 12/9 is the Magnum PI workout, bring your Hawaiian Shirts. 12/16 will be Faceplants official VQ at Dogpile. 12/19 is Rosie’s “12 days of Christmas” at No Toll.

Prayer Request – Snuffs daughter was in the car accident this week. Bone Thugs father is recovering from Sepsis.

NMS – great morning today, 52 degrees was way better than 20. Glad to see all the faces at the workout and then breakfast afterwards. YHC enjoyed the opportunity to lead and thankful the Pax felt they got their monies worth.

  • Touch the Tree the Way You Would Touch Your Wife

7 wily F3 veterans disposed of the lure of The Fartsack and challenged themselves to meet the new day at the latest edition of The Dogpile. Temperatures remained 70 and sunny. According to the lone runner trotting through the parking lot, the following may have happened:

06:00 – Start with a slow mosey around the Dogpile parking lot, first heading south towards the River, then, accepting feedback from EF Hutton, the Q turned right / west away from the cool breezes likely to be found crossing the bridge. Two more rights had the group on the grass adjacent to our parking area for the COP.

With our Nantan present, YHC felt compelled / encouraged to repeat several disclaimers and informational messages regarding our purpose, the rules / guidelines, and anticipated / encouraged outcomes. Hard to remember the whole thing, so we concluded that, whatever else, there are two exercise principles, which are separate. Push yourself. Make it a challenge for yourself. If you are standing still (literally or figuratively), you are regressing. This group does not regress. It’s you against your ability (rather than you against the next fastest guy). Push yourself. Extend yourself. Yet, don’t feel like breaking your body is the goal. All that said, as brevity has never been YHC’s strong point, some PAX (Handshake, Bodo’s) grew tired / cold / bored, deciding on their own to start SSHs. Gomer grew only more engaged / enraptured. YHC can hold a crowd.

So, with the SSHs in full swing, today’s COP began with…

…anything but SSHs. Let’s do Imperial Walkers, call it 3 of them (4-count). Then, SSHs times 10 (4-count). Then, hillbillies, then SSHs, then, so we could all pay attention to Handshake’s story (which was GREAT and only getting better), we did Dead Man Hang. Walk out the hands into Fuddski, then down to Wilson, then right leg high, then left leg high, then hand release merkins x10. Flip it to WWIIs, some flutter kicks, then some other stuff, and we’re off…

…to touch some trees. What has been promised must be delivered. (Appropriate lack of recall or any foreknowledge of the concept was shown by most PAX. Today’s barriers de excellence were, in no particular order, a) having a prime number of men (7), and b) the concept of having 2 people perform the same exercise simultaneously. Onward. The Q practiced his eyeball rolling.

Rounds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. YHC forgets, but at some point, we decided to touch trees. This is a delicate exercise, done appropriately, in the words of Handshake, “like you touch your wife.” Also, touching Bodo’s car counts. References to the stiffness of the wood abounded. There was also a surprising bang during the event. No pastor’s or their wives were injured in the incident. We finished with a round of burpees.

Mosey to the closer giant circle. Dora 1-2-3. Team up in 2s (or 3s). One man runs to the light post (yeah, the one that is on). Each man does his own count of 50 “worthless” Gomer-Pyle dry docks. Then, the team of 2 or 3 completes the remaining 200 squats and 300, 4-count SSHs. Griping about SSHs abounded.

While catching its breadth, the PAX did 30 of the littlest baby crunches.

Mosey to the top of the Amphitheater. Not Quite Self Destruction. Start with 18 v-ups and 18 incline merkins…then 17, then 16, and so forth. YHC put a governor on both ends, with the Six skipping a step to close the gap and the Zoomer repeating a step for the same purpose. Push yourself. Make it a challenge. Make it hard.

Mosey back to the VSF, ahem, actual shovel flag. Quick ring of fire, 10 merkins of your choice.

Numbers, names, and Handshake took us out.

    Announcements:

YHC is pretty sure there were some announcements. Please add them in the comments.

Grow Ruck coming next year. Apparently, it’s under new management. Might be worth giving it a whirl. And / or, perhaps a locally-grown, environmentally friendly CSAUP with a more cost effective price point. TBD.

NMS: Touch a Tree continues to be a rousing success with nary a hiccup in the process. Smooth like buttuh.

    Mumble chatter did not disappoint.

  • Be the bear

Seven men materialized from the gloom looking for a personal challenge and hoping it would involve lots of bear crawls. According to the bears at Maymont evaluating the techniques on display this is how it went down.

COP – SSH, Helicopters, DQ, IW, Copperhead Squats, Merkins, LBC, APD all IC

Matriculate from the circle around to the far corner of the “temporary” construction fence and divide up for a triple check: LBC’s, plank, touch 5 different trees

Shuffle to the rusty cage: Another triple check! Pull ups, American Hammers, timer does 30 jump squats

Ease into a light job and head to the bottom of Death Valley behind the Amphiteather: 11’s with WWII’s at the bottom and Merkins at the top. Traverse between the points channeling your inner bear, rotating a quarter turn for each trip. Bears frequently move sideways and backwards up hills according to Mutual of Omaha. QIC called a couple audibles on this one – moved the whole thing to the bottom of the valley traveling the length of the brick building, then switch from merkins to lunges, then end a bit short. That’s a lot of time spent in bear position.

Slide over to the Amphiteather: Take a few minutes to do some stretching…. then climb the rows, doing two step-ups on each bench, turn around and do two dips on each bench coming back down.

Hustle back up the steps over to the field for a single round of Four corners: 10 merkins, 20 arm circles, 30 single count lunges, 40 SSH.
