  • Gloom Daylight

    Weather forecast showed a nice cool morning for this first Saturday where we should have some morning light for most of the workout. We had an FNG and someone from NOVA for this morning and here is what went down:

    COP

    We mosey to the 1st crop circle to scoop up some potential latecomers as there is the Richmond Marathon, 1/2 marathon and 8k happening today. We start with 20 SSH, 10 DQ’s (in Spanish), 10 Russian Soldiers, 10 Imperial walkers, 10 Helicopters, 15 armcircles 10 small 5 big, reverso, 20 4ct American Hammers, 10 4ct LBC’s, 10 Scorpions, 20 merkins. We are ready to roll.

    THANG

    We do a long mosey to the Cage for a partner routine. Partner 1 (P1) – Runs to hydrant and back as the timer and P2 – performs 5 pullups, 10 merkins and 15 squats. We flap jack this 3 times.

    We then mosey to Ha’ penny stage and pick up a coupon, partner up with different partner. For this routine P1- touches 5 trees as the timer while P2 performs curls with coupon. Then P1 Curls while P2 touches 5 trees. The second round P1 performs sit up press with coupon while P2 touches 5 trees, rotate then for the last rotation we perform Kettle bell swings with coupon.

    Daylight has arrived and we mosey past the cage and down the hill to the Pipe loop. We divide into groups of 3 for a triple check and P1-runs the loop as the timer, P2- performs LBC’s and P3 lunges. When P1 returns to LBC’s, P2 – Lunges and P3 runs the loop. When P3 returns to LBC’s, P1 – Lunges and P2 runs loop. We repeat this rotation two more times for a triple check.

    We then begin to mosey back to flag going on the road by the nickel bridge. During the return we perform 10 merkins as light pole, sprint to the second light pole perform 20 merkins, walk to next light pole 10 merkins, sprint to next pole for 20 merkins, walk to next pole perform 10 merkins Bernie Saunders to next pole perform 15 merkins. We then mosey to the flag.

    COP

    Numberama and Namerama. We welcome Ross Wydowski FNG(Captain Obvious). We had a prayer request for Hitchhiker’s Father-in-Law who has COVID-19 and Marv’s Father who is in the hospital. YHC took us out in Prayer.

    This how it went down

    Slaughter Start – To celebrate YHC’s team winning the World Series for the first time in 26 years we did 26 Merkins followed by 4 Burpees for their total of 4 titles

    Mosey “off campus” over the Lakes onto a field next to Shields Lake.

    COP (ALL IC) – Since The Carpenter was visiting us, YHC called him up to lead in some SSH (50 IC), YHC took back over and we completed: DQ, Hillbillies, LBC’s, Scorpion Kicks, Alternating Shoulder Taps, Hand Release Merkins, Arm Circles

    THANG

    Mosey over to Amelia St

    Love Hill Workout – Partner up, just like going up or down love hill one partner ran to the other side of the lake the back while second partner does an exercise down the road. Lunges, Broad Jump Burpees, and Polar Bears were completed

    Mosey over to hill and some railing next to Swan Lake

    Railing Smokers (Aka Pole Smokers): PAX lined up down the railing and “planked” on the first level. First person in line prop their feet up to the top of the rail and completed 10 Carolina Dry Docks then run to the end of the line. Rinsed and Repeat for one round

    Mosey to the far side of Swan Lake

    Touch a Tree – Partner up, first part touches 5 trees while second partner does exercises. Rinse and Repeat for 3 rounds make sure to touch different trees each rounds. Completed American Hammers, Heels to Heaven, and SSH’s

    Mosey to the other side of Sawn Lake and down the hill

    Jacobs Ladder – Run and down the hill completing escalating Merkins each top up starting with one and finishing with six

    Mosey to Westover Rd

    Native American run (with optional Burpees) back to Shirley Ln

    5 MOM – While still on Shirley ln found a brink wall where we did 10 Dips IC then LT. Dan up the run and short mosey back to the SF

    Numberrama, Namerama, Announcements, YHC took us out

    MOLESKIN

    It felt good to finally be back out at bootcamp workout. YHC didnt post the whole month of October first due to an ear/sinus infection then to many late nights watching playoff. Also great to have Carpenter back down from NJ for weekend. YHC couldn’t allow him not the lead in SSH while visiting

    The PAX seemed to have the mumble chatter turned up to 11 which not suprising considering the fellas in attendance

    For some reason the Native American run turned into how fast we could get to the end.

    As YHC shared this morning, I couldn’t be more thankful for this group. This past month has been rough one and one of the things that made it easier was haven’t fellas from F3 reach out and check on me. This a great remember that we should all think about someone we haven’t seen in while then reach out to make sure they are ok. Showing someone you care can go a long way

    We took off the opposite way than usual which made Oyster question YHC’s authority and sanity. NBD.

    COP — IJR, crab cakes, LBC’s, IW’s, dirty dogs, flutterkicks, copperhead squats, lunges, slow V-ups, some other stuff

    Head to the Bridge.
    Fast guys first. Run the bridge all the way to Riverside Drive. Each light either do 2 burpees or 5 merkins. REturn when the first people come back and pass you.

    COP:
    Arm circles, Cherry Pickers, DQs, SSHs, Mt Climbers, WWIIs, & Merkins.

    The Thang:

    Bermuda Triangle –
    Bear crawl, run (past a dead squirrel), 5 Burpees, Burnie Sanders, 20 LBCs.

    7 of Diamonds –
    Handshake pointed out, quite expertly, that it appeared that I wanted everyone to get into 2 groups, instead of groups of 2. It was an appreciated point. At each corner we did 7 Merkins, then 14 Mt Climbers, 21 American Hammers, 28 Side Straddle Hops, 21 American Hammers ,14 Mt Climbers, & lastly 7 Merkins. We ran the length of the field and moved across the width in any manner conceivable with the exception of walking or running. This one looked shorter on paper. I think the new name for this exercise is The Clock Burner.

    Coupon Fun –
    Plank and Pass – Everyone grabbed a coupon. As a bunch of coupons lay scattered about, we used exactly 2 of them. With little time remaining, we broke into Team A and Team B. We planked shoulder to shoulder. P1, at the 1st position, passed a coupon to P2, and so on. The man at the end of the line picked up the coupon and ran to the 1st position. We Rinsed and Repeated until P1 was back in the 1st position. Team A won.

    We kept our team and lines, all stood and faced the same direction. P1 passed the coupon over their head to P2, who was behind them. P2 passed it behind them, but b/w their legs. P3 did an overhead pass to P4, and so on. The final man ran to the 1st position. We Rinsed and Repeated until P1 returned to the starting position. Team A won again. YHC was not on Team A.

    COT: Numbers, names, announcements (the shoe drive is still on), prayer requests for a couple of the gents’ mother-in-laws regarding physical and mental health concerns. YHC took us out in prayer.

    I’m truly grateful to be given the opportunity to lead this group of men in the strengthening of our bodies and spirits. May we all continue to push each other to grow and to develop into the men we are intended to become.

  • No Q….No problem

    YHC arrived to see two PAX members ready and eleven more followed. The shovel flag was placed and the mumblechatter lead to no official Q so a hot potato was announced and you know the drill. YHC took lead at 0600….mosey to ampitheater.

    COT-some exercises and of course, YHC goofed one exercise. YHC quickly called 11’s. Up the ampitheater and down, alternating from dips and merkins. Q given to Helix.

    Helix called a ring of fire with V ups and holding 6 inches while waiting your turn. Q handed to GP

    GP took us to rust cage, using our nightvision goggles, and called for 20 pullups, 20 dips, and 20 jerkins. GP decided to find some light so off we went to the Penny Stage. 5 exercises with 20 reps=100….GP’s favorite number! Q handed to Wilson.

    Wilson took us back to ampitheater stage for a triple check. One ran around top of ampitheater, one sat in the invisible chair, and third PAX member balls to the wall. Q handed to Bone Thugs.

    Bone Thugs wanted to work on our core. Two lines and PAX alternated bear crawls down the line in concrete-both feet and both hands on the line….each PAX member attempting to walk the line, twice! Q handed to Corned Beef.

    Corned Beef took us back to the flag where we stretched and yoga’d for the last 5 minutes.

    Beer Mile was a success except for Gypsy. Handshake represented with a time of 8:35.

  • Dogpiles hottest Potatoes

    With no Q on the sheet a Hot Potato was Launched. YHC has to admit he was doing the exercises but not paying enough attention to remember what exactly transpired. 

    Tryhard – COP and Triple Check in the Amphitheater 

    Gomer – A couple of Triple Checks at the Jerkin Gym

    EF Hutton – Various Bear Crawl/Crab Walk/etc exercises in the circle

    Handshake – compounding Triple Check and a mosey back to the flag before time expired. 

    Announcements – 

    Gomer leaves next week for Honduras on a scouting mission for his upcoming January Mission Trip. Prayers for safe travels and for the Mission Trip itself. Gomers typical crew of 16 is only at 2 currently, so prayers they can get more people to support the upcoming January trip. 

    Freed to Bleed. Pigskin is coordinating a Blood Drive and he needs morning/afternoon volunteers and Donors. 

    Beer Mile – Faceplant is coordinating the 10th annual Shawn G Hogan Memorial Beer Mile. Faceplant will be hosting this year at his home in Ginter Park. Provide your own 4 pack of Light Beer. Friday, October 15th. Launch time at 7:30. 

    NMS – it was a great morning. Lots of people were busy and had to roll quickly, but several of us had the opportunity to gather for Breakfast at ET’s. Swiper and Shakedown weren’t at the Bootcamp but they ran together during the beatdown. We also saw TYA, he had just finished running with his Dog Doppelgänger.

  • Birthday Q

    YHC signed up to celebrate for his upcoming birthday. Mosey to the field of the Virginia War Memorial Carillon Tower for some warm-ups.

    • COP:
      • Deadman hang x 10, arm circle x 10 (both direction), DQ x 10, helicopters x 10, American hammers x 20, LBC x 20, merkins x 10
    • Exercise# 1
      • Do an exercise on 25 yard, 50 yard, and 75 yard each direction for four rounds.
      • 1st: 5 burpees, 2nd: 10 merkins, 3rd: 20 LBC, 4th: SSH
    • Exercise# 2
      • Moseyed to “mixing bowl” behind the Amphitheater. Total 11s. 1 burpees and 10 WW2 on one side, run into and out of the mixing bowl to the other side, repeat the same exercise, and ran back to the other side, did 9 burpees and 2 WW2.
    • Exercise# 3
      • Moseyed down to the middle of the road right behind the Amphitheater. “Love Hill”.
      • Partner 1 ran up to the gate and back while partner 2 do an exercise.
      • Exercises are bear crawl, lunges, and frog jump and repeat until both partners reach to the gate.
    • Exercise# 4
      • PLT (Partner Leg Toss) x 25
    • Exercise# 5
      • Moseyed back to the flag and did a ring of fire with 5 each person’s choice of merkins

    17 men met in the morning gloom. We made fun of each other. We encouraged each other. It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

    COP: Warmuparama started with arm circles, then cherry pickers, don quixote’s, side straddle hops, mt. climbers, WWIIs and rounded out with some merkins.

    The Thang:

    Quarter Pounders – Jog to the 1st quarter of the field, do 25 merkins, then sprint back. Jog to the center for 50 squats, sprint back. Then 75 LBCs at the 3rd quarter mark…100 side straddle hops before sprinting back the length of the field.

    Valley of Ill Repute for 11s – It might have more aptly been named the Valley of Ill Communication. Apparently, the instructions were super clear-ish. 17 men strong, in mostly dark clothing, before the sun was up, ran into the valley and up the hill for 10 burpees and some of us then went to the other side for one 2-count lunge, then 9 burpees and two 2-count lunges, etc. Wilson, what could go wrong?

    Coupon Sit Up Pass – Partners sat facing one another in the sit up position, one did a Coupon Sit Up while his partner did a WWII, then the coupon was passed between them, as they then switched duties.  Each man did 25 WWIIs alternating with 25 Coupon Sit Ups.  Bodos and Bacon Bits seemed to crack the code on this one by locking feet.  But then they went and (I believe) did double the amount.  They’re gonna feel that.  

    Triple Check – Murder Bunnies was the timer while partners Flutter Kicked and Monkey Humped.  Also, GP taught us the proper way to Murder Bunny.  I’d share his method, but it’s inappropriate.  

    BTTF:
    Native American Run – The Pax paid homage to the original Americans while moseying in unity BTTF.  

    2 min of various Merkins, selected by each man, around the shovel flag, wrapped it up.  

    COT:
    Numberama. Namearama.
    Announcearama: There was a GP-led Sit & Sip last night (hope it was a good time), Upchuck shared that there is an opening spot for Breaking Bread after Thanksgiving that needs filling and DTH informed the group of the passing of F3 member Joe Ferguson, known to F3 as Chisel.  
    Pigskin was not present, but please be aware of his announcement on Slack: “I set up a new channel, Freed to Bleed, for the next blood drive.  
    1 We need donors. ?
    2 We need people to announce at the AOs about the blood drive.
    3 We need volunteers the day of the blood drive to setup, sign people in and to return the site better than we found it.
    Details: Wednesday, October 20 at Good Shepherd Lutheran in Midlothian (off 288). The same place as back in the spring. (FYI edited to correct the day of the week.)

    I left the AO feeling grateful to be a part of this brotherhood, grateful for another day of life and grateful to get through my VQ without completely embarrassing myself.  This F3 thing is truly special and I’m honored to be a part of it.

  • Back To School (Night)

    Thirty Four perennial 4th graders posted for a Back to School version of Field Day. Bus after bus after bus pulled into the parking lot (in the case of Hardywood, it’s a true statement) to bring the heat and feel the pain. The uniform machine was strong, with West Enders dawning their usual and respected popped collars. D’Ville stepped up their game in a big way, bringing a Mechanicsville sponsorship into the fold. Well done men! Free oil changes, or something, for everyone!

    7:01 – Let’s mosey to the field. Four teams of 8/9 were establishe.

    Crab Soccer opened up the games. Eight minute games. Tight matches on the pitch ensued, with Team Southside (including YHC on a borrowed contract from City Proper) took both matches in style. There were no controversial goals.

    Olympic Relays were next: Wheelbarrow out to the cone, BooYah Merkins x 10, switch and wheelbarrow back. Team City Proper won the podium. Sack Races were next. Form varied, and there were surprise performances. Mudface showed serious agility and speed, while TYA and Bone Thugs showed neither. Handshake took a Matrix dive in slo-mo in a valiant effort to cross the line in front. To no avail, he came up five feet short. Once again, City Proper took the podium.

    Marathon: COVID appropriate Tunnel of Love across the field. For a third time, City Proper took Gold.

    Merkin Egg Toss: Several rounds. After each round, distance got greater and Merkins got more difficult. Merkins x 10 / Chuck Norris Merkins x 10 / Diamond Merkins x 10. Team D’ville took the entire podium, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Competition is now fully on.

    Tug Of War: Gladiators came together in epic battles of muscle torque and gusto. Not really, but it sounds good. In the end, Mudface and company were too much to handle.

    BTTF:

    Announcements: 1st Inaugural 3rd Annual F3RVA Retreat is next Saturday at Gomer’s family farm in Amelia. Contact me or Gomer for the address. Gates open at 1:00. Cornhole will commence around 2:30. Sign up in Google Docs, Monthly Challenges. This is a bring your own everything event. We will provide a grill, you bring the rest. There are no formalities other than corn hole. There is plenty of room for yard games. Have a baseball catch, play birdie ball, Try Hard may bring his ropin’ station – who knows. Do bring a dish for the group to share.

    COT: Let us be ever mindful to remember where we came from. For me, I come from F3RVA in many ways. I miss you all dearly, and am always grateful to be with you, my brothers. Today was a special honor for me to lead. As we grow and separate from various phases of our lives, let us not forget where we came from. Embrace your heritage, embrace your upbringing. Hold them tight and never allow them to be forgotten.

    On this 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack, a handful of non-BRR studs joined YHC for a remembrance Q. Here is how we honored the fallen:
