  • Dogpile

5 grizzled veterans joined for this weeks dogpile. The crew was ready for a beatdown and we crushed. YHC has to work this weekend so no time for the details but we all left exhausted.

  • A Chotchkie free beatdown

Eight eager PAX found their way to Dogpile on a muggy July morning. After the Q put down some cough drops we did:

COP: SSH, Don Qs, Imperial Walkers, Merkins, Flutterkicks. Over to Amphitheatre: Increasing dips on the way down each step. PAX were thoroughly covered in grass clippings so off we went to penny stage: Dora 123: 100 Derkins, 200 WWIIs, 300 Jump Squats. Instead of run Bear Crawl to lamppost and run back.

3 Rounds of 20 PLTs, then down to Rusty Cage. 4 rounds of: 6 Pullups & 10 Dips. Back to Carillon field: Few rounds of lunge, Bernie, & sprints. Introduce Gambler to Pickle Pounders. Finish up with some step ups & dips on steps then back to flag for 2 min of Mary.

Announcements: August Ultimate and Pickleball tournaments. Sign up and practice.

NMS: Good mix of PAX this morning with some Vets and some newbies. YHC was worried with a van-ful of PAX headed to the Bridge today with some Dogpile regulars it might be a smaller PAX, but 8 allowed us to have some fun. Choo Choo got after it and Swoop was setting the pace today. Coffee after was a blast and Gomer joined us there.

  • Welcome Estrogino!

COP: Arm Circles, Cherry Pickers, DQs, SSHs, Mt Climbers, WWIIs, Merkins.

Mosey to the nickel bridge.  5 merkins at odd posts and 5 AHs at even posts.  Coming back, 2 Burbees at each odd post and 2 Heels to Heaven at each even post.  Faceplant then led us in a little plank work.

Mosey to the Pipeline.  Triple check.  P1 ran the pipeline.  P2 did LBCs.  P3, shoulder taps.

Mosey to the Rusty Cage.  OYO, Pull ups to failure, 5 hanging dips, 5 jump squats, 20 SSHs.  3Xs.

BTTF.  FMs, Box Cuters, Little Baby Side Oblique Crunches, WWIIs, LBCs, 6 inch leg raises for 60 seconds and finish w/ Merkins to failure.

Numbers, Names. Great to have Stinger (he met his M on Bumble) visiting from Tuscaloosa. Senor Frog EHed his Brother-In-Law (Respect SF!). This FNG hung right there with us for the full hour, had many notable positive qualities, but as a father of 4 girls, he walked away with the name (wait for it) Estrogino, which just might be Italian for manly man with many daughters, but we will probably never know.

Announcements: Pickleball Tournament Aug 17 (no Dogpile this day). 6am. Find a partner. Doubles only. Sign up. Ask Hitchhiker if you have questions. Pickleball practice on Mondays at Batteau. Someone will always have an extra paddle for you.

Check out Dark Helmets State of the Nation address. Learn where F3 is going and changes to look out for.

Machismo, quite eloquently, shared from Fudd’s recent 3rd F post that as men get together to lean on each other and help each other – it can be seen as weakness, but we see it as strength.

Prayers: Please pray for Purple Rain’s friend who is battling liver failure, esophageal and stomach cancer with kids under 7. Pray for Bootleg’s Brother-In-Law who may have liver cancer. And pray for Offshore’s father after a recent fall. God, we ask that you bring healing to all of these men.

Very enjoyable coffeeteria. We soaked up an F3RVA history lesson from EF Hutton and Bootleg. Great to hang w/ y’all!

Thank you for the opportunity to lead. SYITG!

  • And the winner is…

Five men emerged from the gloom in search of bright sunshine and a balmy 70 degrees under which to engage in scholarly analysis of online dating evaluation criteria. After careful deliberation and cases made for evaluating political compatibility, alignment in progress through life’s accomplishments, fiscal responsibility, and accounting for quality of character it was agreed that when it comes down to it, go with the one that’s more physically attractive. Literally never fails. These studs also worked in some exercise during lulls in the debate. That part went like this:

COP: SSH, Helicopter, Dead Man Hang, DQ, IW, Copperhead Squat, Merkin, LBC, APD, Box Cutter all IC

Mosey to the Amphitheater: incrementing dips on each row starting at 1 at the top ending at 18

Amble down to the pipeline: a group of three and a group of two – one group runs the pipe loop while the other does exercises: Exercises were WWII’s, American Hammers, plank

Ascend the hill to the rusty cage: individually perform a cycle of two exercises and run to the hydrant and back: Round1 – 5 pull-ups, 5 jerkins; Round 2 – 5 Jerkins, 5 dips, Round 3 – 5 dips, 5 pull ups

As the rain picked up migrate to the triangle: First round – Bear crawl, 10 carolina dry docks, run down the hill and do 20 WWII’s, run up the hill and do 10 merkins. Second round – lunge, 10 jump squats, down the hill and do 10 double count american hammers, up the hill and do 10 merkins. Third round – lunge, 5 lieutenant Dans, 20 LBCs, up the hill and finish with 10 merkins.

After making sure Mr Rogers had both contact lenses still implanted someplace his head, saunter back to the flag and fill the remaining time with part of a round of 11’s between the light posts: start with 10 squats and 1 SSH. Called when time was reached.

    Count off and identify yourself.

Announcements: Some voiced and some pulled from other backblasts – there’s a lot going on!

  • F3 Saves Lives

A small band of firework-weary HIM’s gathered at Dogpile to shake off the holiday. YHC was surprised to see the Q sheet empty yesterday, so stepped up in honor of our Summer Tour. Here’s what the creepy doll watching from the ancient beater suburban witnessed:

    • FLATTY took the PAX out in Prayer

NMS:  Upon completion of this brutal little sweatfest someone commented “we haven’t had a beatdown like that here in a long time” to which Bootleg said “you mean since last week?” And then Bootleg regaled us on Bodos’ ninja warrior badassery, and we all agreed that Bodos is the most awesome combination of graceful joy and formidable competitor we’ve all ever encountered. The story of his recent cloth-lining accident was also retold, and after Flatty told us all the terrible ways that kind of injury causes certain death, YHC had the epiphany that it was probably Bodos dedication to remaining physically fit (likely the most fit pastor in all of RVA) that saved his life. Thanks to F3, his strong neck muscles saved his life! So, here’s the lesson on PREPAREDNESS for all of us directly from the Q Source – we must maintain the daily disciplines to get ready for the expected, and be ready for the unexpected. Yours AYE! ~DTH

5 aspiring martial artists gathered for a test of strength and agility at 0600. The first 30 minutes was a slow mosey through the whole course, stopping at various stages for COP. The final 30 minutes was a timed run through the whole course. The course was as follows:

    • Start at parking lot

Finished up with Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out.

NMS: This is the third time I’ve attempted this workout, the first at Dogpile. It was a good course but more demanding than any of us expected, likely because of the 100% humidity. Thanks guys for giving this a go on my birthday, was a lot of fun. Great conversation at Coffeeteeria afterwards, mostly about the very interesting if not somewhat bizarre stuff that Bootleg is reading. SYITG!

  • The Return of Vinny’s Poison Ivy?

Eight pathfinders jumped into the Gloom in the latest edition of The Dogpile. Temperatures were 70 and sunny. According to the couples admiring our form on the Vita Trail, the following might have happened:

Mosey towards the normal circle, then veer 90 degrees to the small field in front of the green / muraled storage unit for the COP.

Little baby crunches (to start!) x20
    Flutter kicks
    WWIIs
Hand release / Da’Shawn Watson Merkins (no hands!)
    SSHs

Let’s mosey to the small triangle where the road into the park meets the small parking lot next to the Grand Field. Not a place we usually use. Partner up for Touch-a-Tree.

Rounds of 4, 6, and 8 trees. Ab exercise while the runner runs.

Mosey to the Street of Despair. 5 merkins at every lamp post. Unless you want to do them on the sidewalk, in which case 6 merkins. On the grass, 20 merkins per pole. Circle up at the former Police Statue circle. Find a different partner for an oldie, but goodie.

    Partner 1, WWIIs.
Partner 2, climb the hill adjacent to the water storage pond (under construction).

The grass was cut, and therefore only 3-5 inches deep, much deeper than it looks. PAX will keep us informed on whether Vinny’s Poison Ivy makes an appearance.

    Mosey to the VITA Trail.

Bro-code run, stopping at each exercise apparatus. Actual equipment only. Birdhouses and just-a-sign do not count. 3 finger-tip or diamond merkins plus 3 WWIIs at each stop.

Halfway through, the PAX found some shade and an audience for fire-hydrants (look it up). Much fun was had by all.

Continue the circuit, but switch to 3 Chuck Norris merkins and 3 V-ups.

Trot across Park Avenue to the four yellow boulders along the entrance driveway. The PAX moseys past these regularly, but rarely uses them. Today, we did. Partner up (with a new partner):

Partner 1: Mosey to the tree / port-o-potty.
Partner 2: Alternating rounds of either 10 incline merkins or 10 decline merkins plus a Dealer’s Choice ab exercise until Partner 1 returns. PAX felt like this was 10 rounds. Close.

Mosey BTTVSF. 50 burpees called, but time, so sadly, no burpees.

Numbers, names, and Oyster took us out.

    Announcements:

Hopefully, a successful launch at The Iron Bridge today. Looking forward to hearing how that went.

Monday, The Alamo, 5:30 a.m., our Brother Wildcat will run us ragged in advance of his next doctor’s appointment. Be there for the man.

Summer Tour continues. Let’s do it.

July 4, Convergence, Batteau (meet at the Stone House), 7:00 a.m. City Proper hosting?

August 21, First Watch, join me in celebrating my father’s 100th birthday. River Road Church, Baptist. 05:00.

Late September, F3RVA’s 10th Anniversary workout. Convergence. Dogpile. Please reach out to Gomer or Rosie. We need guys to contribute their time and energy for this effort. Lots of options for helping. Turn off your phone, put your clipboard to the side, and lend a hand. Let’s go!

NMS: YHC arrived to an unexpected sight – a lone Kia abandoned at Dogpile by a grey-bearded 45/6ish year old gone for a pre-run. Nice work, Rosie.

James River Heating / Cooling showed up, and promptly did nothing to make the temperatures more pleasant.

The US Army showed up to explain how 2 really equals 4. Go figure. But, always nice to have an actual shovel flag, so boom. Board shorts, flip-flops, and a shovel flag. Nice start.

Honeymoon brought another Kia, so now we have two.

Nancy brought a beast of a car. Vrrrooom, vrrooom.

Oyster arrived thinking YHC had tossed him the Q, and Hitchhiker quietly rounded out the PAX after dropping off his mother in law at the tanning salon.

Prayer Request: Hitch is becoming a parent again (x3!) sometime this week. MIL in town for 3 weeks. 3 weeks. THREE weeks. Prayers for peace, patience, love, kindness, etc.

Prayers for Wildcat, his family, and every PAX member who attempts to keep up with him on Monday. LFG!

    Happy Father’s Day

  • Sleep Mask On – Ready Position Move

According to LOTS of cyclists in the park today, w/ at least one hittin’ some wacky tobaccy before embarking on a 100 mile trial ride (like the Frog suggested, perhaps this is the recruiting tool we’ve been missing), this is what went down:

COP: Arm Circles, Cherry Pickers, DQs, SSHs, Mt Climbers, WWIIs, Merkins.

Blimps (burpees, lunges, imperial walkers, merkins, plank jacks, and side strandle hops) then run a loop after each exercise.

Line up across the carillon – 100 yard sprint followed by 100 merkins (1st one completing 100 calls it). Slowsy back to the starting point. 75 yard sprint – 75 squats with a slowsy back. 50 yard sprint, 50 LBCs, slowsy back. 25 yard sprint – 25 Monkey Humpers, slowsy back. 10 yard bear crawl, 10 burpees OYO.

Eye of the Tornado: 10 Markers (a couple trash cans, a bucket, & some cones) set out in a circle, each with an exercise written on it. 3 Burpees at the Eye and then pick an exercise.  Repeato, until all 9 exercises done  (markers & exercises were 0= 10 AMs, 1 = 1 Burpee, 2 = 2 Burpees, 3 = 10 WWIIs, 4 = 15 plank jacks, 5= 15 mt climbers, 6= 20 Monkey Humpers, 7= 20 flutter kicks, 8= 20 box cutters).

To the triangle- bear crawl the short side, 20 CDDs, run, 20 WWIIs,  feel the Bernie up the hill, 20 merkins.

    SSHs Plus –
Form a circle.  Do SSHs OYO.  A member of the pax, when called on, initiates a core exercise.  15 are done.  Then return to SSHs.

Indian Bear Crawl carrying bucket of cones. All bear crawl.  Man at the back carries bucket to the front, drops bucket, and resumes bear crawling.  When the man at the back gets to the bucket, he grabs it and runs to the front, then bear crawls.  I didn’t communicate this well and it was a LONG way to crawl.  Therefore, this was a train wreck.  Borrow this idea at ur own peril.

BTTF.  FMs, 6 inch leg raise/hold for 60 seconds and a finish w/ merkins to failure.  Numbers, Names, Announcements:

Summer tour (great to see some tourists today!)

    2nd F at Firehouse Subs on the 2nd Tuesday (6/11 @ 12pm)

    July 4th Convergence

Beware of the SOJ Takeover next week

Pickleball, Monday, Forest Hill Park, 5:30am.

New AO, Iron Bridge, launches with Posh on 6/22.

Prayers for Fudd’s sister Mary and Splinter’s mother. Prayers for Hitch’s M, who’s ready to introduce that baby to the world.

Final Thoughts: BB title from my headband looking like a sleep mask and the correction I needed on my exercise introductions. Even after 4 years with yall, I”m still learning and working at this thing. Crabgrass, well done today after only being in the gloom for 3 months. Great to meet you, thanks for the visit to Dog Pile and congrats on your 8 month old. Lots of folks out there are going through it. Let’s all strive to compare ourselves to who we were yesterday, not to someone else today – so that we may continue to grow to be strong for ourselves, for our families and our greater community. Go do something positive today fellas!

  • Pool Epip is possible

A fiesty five faithful PAX came out Dogpile to find mid 50s temps to start out June. We did:

COP: SSH, Don Qs, Imperial Walkers, Squats, Merkins, Reverse Crunch, Scorpion kicks

Head to Amphitheater: 5 Derkins each step all way up. 5 Squats each step on the way back down. Mosey to open stage and take advantage of picnic tables there: Rounds of dips, bear crawl to lamppost, and Heels2Heaven. 3 rounds.

Mosey down to Rusty Cage: 3 rounds of 5 Pullups & 10 Dips. Head down to pipe loop. Since Bodos threw off our numbers we did: Run Pipe Loop backwards, then APDs and Freddy Mercurys. Repeato. Mosey to bottom of Love Hill. Alternate way up with Lunges, Crab walk, Bernie Sanders. Stop a few times along the way for some Ab work and a few more dips on the steps. Back to flag for 2 min of Mary. YHC took us out.

Prayers for Splinter’s family (especially parents) and YHCs good friend’s dad who is in Hospice in his final days.

Announcements: See Slack for Rucks in memory of D-Day 80th anniversary on Monday and Thursday. June monthly challenge is Run a Mile a Day. Sign up.

NMS: Solid smaller veteran group at Dogpile. Lot of regulars likely at R&R for Rosie’s 9 year celebration beat down. Ample mumblechatter covering Sex-Wine, Bodos weekly injury updates, and AI is going to kill us all. Great way to start the month off. Reviews of running the Pipe Loop backwards were unanimously positive.
