  • Ghost Flag Resurrection

17 HIM’s converged at Satan’s Hill to discover a brand spankin new SOJ GHOST FLAG planted by YHC to usurp the Q. The planned victim was WARBY, but after his recent calf strain he had asked STAE FARM to cover the Q, and as excited as SF was to lead the bootcamp, it was not to be…

    The THANG:

    WARMERAMA:

    • While WARBY left for a walking tour of the neighborhood, the rest of the PAX took off up the Hill, then returned to circle up in the parking lot
    • Welcome & Disclaimer
    • Variable IC Reps to get the muscles warm top to bottom

    COP #1 – GUTBUSTERS

    • Play Ghostbusters Theme Song
    • Flutters to the beat and Heels to Heaven for every “Ghostbusters” lyric

    COP #2 – THE WARBY

    • x20 WWII’s at the bottom of Satan’s Hill
    • AYG Sprint to the top
    • x20 Ranger Merkins at the top
    • Bernie Sanders back down
    • x10 Yurpees at the bottom (YURPEE = Burpee Variation in honor of the Ruskie (Yuri Verkhoshansky) who developed Plyometrics to train Olympians. Merkin at bottom of burpee is a clap-merkin and on up portion there are 2 tuck jumps per burpee.)
    • Bring in the SIX doing ABC’s (…this has now been added as the latest in the long line in WILDCAT’s superpowers)

    COP #3 – HAPPY QUADS

    • Press play on the song “Happy,” by Pharrell Williams
    • Hold squat in Peoples Chair, coming up with every “Happy” lyric, while overhead clapping along to the beat

    PLANKORAMA INTERMISSION

    • Get low and State Farm stated the F3 Mission, push back up
    • Down again and Purple Rain quoted the F3 Credo, push back up
    • Last time down and EF Hutton gave us the 5 Core Principles, push back up

PRO TIP for newer guys who want an easy way to remember the 5 CP’s, use the acronym FORGE:

    • F – free
    • O – open to all men
    • R – rain or shine
    • G – guys rotate the Q
    • E – end with a COT

COP #4 – THE WARBY, Round 2 (insert emoji vomit face here)

    COP #5:

    • Grab a rock and circle up
    • SATAN’S THRILLER
    • Press play on MJ’s “Thriller”
    • OYO choose to wither stay with STATE FARM to do coupon reps, OR join the Q running up and down Satan’s Hill
    • DTH and SF switch half way
    • Return the rocks
    • That’s TIME!

GHOST FLAG CEREMONIOUSLY HANDED OFF TO STATE FARM, AND THEN REVIEWED THE RULES:

    • Bring the Flag to any SOJ AO, plant the Ghost Flag before the kickoff time, steal the Q.
    • Whoever had their Q stolen keeps the Ghost Flag to pay forward the fun at another SOJ AO in the not-so-distant future.
    • Not to be implemented for special/anniversary Q’s
    • Keep the flag in SOJ

    COT:

    • Counterama # 17
    • Namerama
    • Announcerama (see Below)
    • YHC took the PAX out in Prayer

NMS:  Awesome big group of brothers today, and GREAT to have my younger brother Flint (John H) down visiting from Philadelphia. Pretty wild to leave Bon Air in the pouring rain, get to SH where they hadn’t had a single drop, complete a completely dry beatdown, and then return to BA with ongoing pouring rain – hope you Deep South boys get some rain! Special thanks and TClaps for STATE FARM being such a game brother as to embrace the disruption of forfeiting his planned beatdown (which I’m sure would have been awesomely awful) for our inaugural SOJ Ghost Flag Takeover. Shout out to newbie KATNISS getting after it and posting everywhere, and nice to meet LACES OUT (was SO confused when you emerged from the driver’s seat of State Farm’s yellow truck, then we noticed two of the exact same truck.) Also, good to see HUTTON flexing his Summer Tour muscles, and a HAPPY 45th BIRTHDAY to WARBY!  In a nod to the summer tour and during a season of seeing what YHC is physically capable of, this was YHC’s 5th Q in a row this week. #6 will be a Ruck tomorrow AM before POOL BOY’s VQ. The PAX weee encouraged this morning to step up and post/Q more, and HEIST challenged everyone to keep headlocking FNG’s – now’s the time! Very thankful for all you guys, and as always thanks for letting me lead! Yours AYE! ~DTH

    Prayer Requests:

    • WARBY, healing strained calf
    • FLINT, healing foot tendonitis

  • My Quarterback Would Sometimes Twinkle His Fingers

4 ‘Merican Water Dogs jumped in with both feet to the latest edition of The Creek. Water temperatures were 70 and sunny. According to the water moccasins swimming in the Pearson’s Corner Elementary parking lot, the following strokes might have happened:

Mosey from the shallow end to the deep end of the kiddie pool, pick up Corned Beef, and make a flip turn back to the main pool for the COT.

SSHs x40 (4 count). This is DaVille, so many references to our friend The Carpenter and his penchant for SSHs.
    Dead Man Hang
    Fudd’s Wife
    Wilson’s Wife
    Fudd’s Wife
Imperial Walkers x10 (8, Corned Beef’s count was slightly different, but Yard Sale tracked the CB count)
Hillbillies x10 (“This is DaVille; this is our kind of exercise!”) (12, CB count)
    LBCs x20 (18)
    Flutter kicks x20 (23)
    Rosalita’s x10 (11)
    Inverted Scorpion Kicks x10 (21)

Mosey to the Parking Lot Driveway for a Beast. Markers were pole, tree, tree. Flip turn at the Stop sign.

Medley events were ‘merkins, squats, LBCs, monkey humpers, hello dolly, and something else. Free style on the outbound, back stroke (I.e., Bernie Sanders) on the return leg.

10 count to wiggle the water off like a dog coming out of a pool. Whaapaawhaaapaawhaappaawhaaapaa!!! (Add that to the F3 Exicon!).

Mosey to the kiddie pool for Four Corners. (No Running on the Deck!)

    Round 1: 5, 10, 15, 20 reps…
    Round 2: 10, 15, 20, 25
    Round 3: 15, 20, 25, 30

Merkins, WWIIs, Mountain Climbers, SSHs. If it can be a four-count, make it a four count. Do anything you want, but make it a challenge.

Mosey to the water polo court for free-style suicides. 3 burpees at the end.

Mosey to the VSF for one round of Water Mary…inverted scorpion paddles.

Numbers, names, and YHC took us out.

NMS: The Pax decided to get a head (false start/DQ) start on the Pool Boy water exercises by utilizing the deep end of the Pearson’s Corner (YHC feels “Pearson’s Landing” is more appropriate) Elementary parking facility. Visiting for the first time and in the dark, YHC successfully discovered the deepest part of the lot. Jump right in; the water’s warm.

Special thanks to Phelps, Thorpe, and Spitz for joining me this morning. What a soaker. And, if you have not heard about Yard Sale’s football career, many a good line comes out of hearing stories about playing center.

Announcements (Continued dudos to Tryhard for the original list – always cite your sources!):

    • Summer Tour. Oyster / Tryhard posting a ton. Get out there and meet some new men or catch up with old pals. Also, on-going contest to invent the most micro of micro events just to get a ST point.
    • Dry July. Good to hear at from those making solid progress toward their goals.
    • Wet July. Sorry, Hutton, Dry July has nothing to do with not sweating. And, YHC has been on vacation. Not conducive to Dry Anything.
    • 7/11 Thursday (TONIGHT!) 18:30 (or 6:30 “p.m.”). Adults paddle on the James. Huguenot Landing. See Lockjaw for details. Bring your kids, if Lockjaw says that’s ok. Or, bring your neighbor who works out in front of your house. Yeah, she does.
    • Thur AM – 0430 Launch to Clown Car down to Amelia Courthouse (Tryhard Q). Clown Car starting location is a closely guarded secret. Credible sources have uncovered the password… “#SOJ.”  Nope, this happened already. You missed it. The correct answer was “Meet at The Forge.”
    • Fri – RAMM Amateur Bike Ride. 05:30. This is a contest. Bring your most ridiculous ride. YHC’s money is on the “1988 Volvo.” Bring your brelly.
    • 7/13 – Poolboy VQ at The Iron Bridge. Get after it.
    • 7/14 – OTB Swimming Pool Bootcamp. It’s free, it’s open to all men.

    • 7/25 Thursday 18:30 (or 6:30 “p.m.”). Adults paddle on the James. Huguenot Landing. See Lockjaw for details.
    • 7/27 – YHC is leading The Bridge. Clown Car from RVA around 06:00. Workout in Buckingham 07:30-08:15. Coffeeteria. Home by 10:30. Note: YHC has heard every excuse possible to skip out, so make your’s a good one. Or, try this: “Honey, can you take the kids until 10:30 Saturday? I would appreciate it. I’d like to help some men who could use a role model.” Even you can score with a line like that.
    • 8/3 – Homegrown Half. This means run either 10k or 13.1 miles. Most confusing F3 event of the year. Is F3 using Metric or Imperial? No one knows who to ask, so YHC has appointed Boberry to take any questions.
    • 8/6 – Ultimate Crab Frisbee Tournament at the Second AO (Learn some F3 history. Figure it out). Bring your NVGs for the first 15 minutes.
    • 8/11 – F3 Family Float on the James. Starts somewhere between Lynchburg and Newport News. Starts sometime between BMNT and ends sometime before EENT. Someone will provide details sometime. (If you have ever done the BRR, when TYA wants you to know, he’ll tell you.)
    • 8/17 – Pickleball Tourney. This is table stakes for winning the Summer Tour. Skip this, and it’s minus 200 points. FWIW, if Splinter and LJ’s kids show up, this thing’s over before it begins.
    • 8/21 – 100th Birthday Celebration at First Watch 05:00. Come celebrate YHC’s father’s 100th birthday. Roaring 20’s, Great Depression, WWII, Cold War, etc.
    • 8/28 – New AO at Moseley Elementary. Note the spelling has been corrected from previous posts. Google Maps will thank you.
    • 9/20 and 9/21 – 10 Year Anniversary (multiple events). It’s like F3 invited you to its wedding. Friday night there is a dinner / drinks (you’ll need an outfit; no plus 1), Saturday morning is the main event (you’ll need a different outfit and you can bring a friend, albeit not likely “that kind” of friend, yet, F3 is open to all men), and then there is a reception Saturday afternoon (with, you guessed it, a different outfit; feel free to bring a plus 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.).

Breaking Bread….for those new to F3, we have been doing this every month for about 8 or 9 years (for the last 4 years, 2 times per month. Thank you, Rosie, for the suggestion.). We will do this each month going forward. Be a stud – make dinner for a group of 8-12 folks who are in town for medical treatment or recovery and need a hand. Invite your M and/or 2.0s or F3 pals to help. See Oyster for details. LFG!

    UpChuck spits the bit.

  • Just Turn Left. If You Turn Right, You are Lost

6 men of honor pushed aside the lure of The Fartsack to suck the marrow out Da Ville. Temperatures were 70 and sunny. According to the kid who left his bike directly under the sprinkler at Rutland Clubhouse, the following might have been the route (bro-code):

    South on Combs.

Left on Bradcroft Terrace. Take that to Bradcroftshire, then left on Bradcroft Landing, and finally left onto Bradcroft Lane. Left on Combs.

Then, run the Atlee Road to Barnfield Lane to Rutlandshire Drive loop. (Left, Left, Left).

    RIGHT on Combs.

Then, RIGHT onto Oakhamshire. Then, all lefts…Fox Hill Farmshire to Colvincrestshire to Hugheslandfarmsshire and left on Combs.

Then, left on Bradcroftlandingshire until time called and circle back to the VSF.

Ruckers took a slightly different route. As far as YHC saw, north on Combs, then south on Combs, then north on Combs, the south on Combs and so forth.

Numbers, names, and Yard Sale took us out.

NMS: YHC loves hitting DaVille. Good dudes, not too many hills (this is A-Cup Terrain), and lots of friendly folks out in the morning. Mumblechatter was strong with Phonics and YHC on site. YHC thanks Trout for his tolerance. Trail Mix put on a strong show – for a guy working up his stamina, today’s sweatfest was no joke.

Great to catch up briefly with everyone afterwards. We should do coffee soon. How about tomorrow at The Creek?

Lend a hand. Leave no (wo)man where you find him (her). YHC thanks you in advance.

  • Order in the Court!

Three Amelia Courthouse HIM’s provided a warm welcome to two RVA Summer Tourists, and conquered the Jester in high form with a ride on the Pain Train, courtesy of the Beatdown Deck. Here’s what the County Deputy watching from his parked Charger witnessed:

    The THANG:

    WARMERAMA:

    • Mosey loop around the Court House Park and circle up
    • Welcome & Disclaimer
    • Variable IC Reps to get the muscles warm top to bottom
    • Low Plank Review of the F3 Mission, Credo, and Five CP’s

    F3 BEATDOWN DECK:

    • Turn up 5 cards
    • PAX complete designated exercise/reps
    • 2-10 = 10 reps
    • Face card = 20 reps
    • Ace = 100 reps
    • Run park loop following each 5-card set
    • x5 Sets completed

    COT:

    • Counterama # 5
    • Namerama
    • Announcerama (see Below)
    • YHC took the PAX out in Prayer

NMS:  OK, WOW! What an AWESOME new Region and AO that brother Hardywood has established! The AO itself has beautiful old town architecture and landscaping with a huge variety of space and obstacles for every kind of beatdown. We certainly missed the dynamic enthusiasm of the AO’s founder but it was awesome meeting Woodstock & Hey Booboo (YHC already knows Nails from our church). Their FNG didn’t show up but they sure as hell put in the WORK this morning. The F3 Beatdown Deck never disappoints! And for someone who’s Q’ing where they’ve never posted, it’s a surefire solid workout no matter where you are. This was ABSOLUTELY worth the trip! Thank ya’ll for letting me lead. Yours AYE! ~DTH

    • Nails’ daughter is soon returning to the mission field
  • Exercising New Muscles

Seven sets of washboard abs showed up for the latest edition of W-Dog. Conditions were sunny and 70. According to the road runner lashed to the hood of the old Suburban, the following might have happened:

Mosey to the 4 big rocks, then to the port-o-potties, then to the circle, then to the rarely used grassy area near the first traffic circle for…the COP.

    SSHs x50
    Dead Man Hang
    Downward Dog/Fudd’s Wife
    Wilson’s Wife
    Downward Dog
    Imperial Walkers x10
    Hillbillies x10
Hand Release Merkins x10, except Bodo’s, who did, shall we say, fewer than 10, but not more than zero. (If anyone knows how YHC can put an eyeball roll in the Backblast, please DM me.)
    WWIIs x20
    Flutter kicks (4 count) x20

Mosey to the hill on Pump House Drive…for…not the Triangle. Nope. For a Beast.

There are 6 trees on the right. The PAX individually picks 3 trees (push yourself, don’t hurt yourself). Do 6 rounds of exercises with 6 reps per tree per round. Pick the trees based on your willingness or ability to run up and down the hill. But, up the hill, the run is Bernie Sanders-style. Bro-code for the six after each round.

Exercises were squats, flutter kicks, monkey humpers, LBCs, merkins, and snow angels.

Mosey to the near traffic circle. There is a Latin jazz and salsa festival this weekend, so the city has put out plenty of trash cans in groups. Each PAX member was instructed to pick 3 exercises OYO. One ab, one leg, and one arm exercise. Round 1, do 20 of each exercise at each of the 3 sets of trash cans, then run the rest of the loop. Round 2, same number of exercises, but pick 3 new exercises. Round 3, pick 3 new exercises.

Question from the PAX: are Alabama prom dates an ab or a leg exercise? DM EF Hutton with your thoughts, or start a new Slack channel “AborLeg.” Invite Wilson to join.

Mosey BTTVSF, jigging left to the four painted rocks for 10 derkins, or not.

Numbers, names, and YHC took us out.

Announcements (Kudos to Tryhard for the list):

NMS: Awesome group of dudes at WDog today. Great to see some guys who YHC has not seen in a while. Big Tennessee, Slippin’ Jimmy, and Doublemint. Always good to catch up with Bodo’s, Hutton, and the new papa, Hitchhiker. Sweatfest.

Learning Note: do you apologize for your failings? One PAX member reports “exercising new muscles” by taking the time to appreciate his own failings, especially with his M. Nice lesson for all of us.

Last point, great to catch up with Hutton at the WDog Coffeeteria today.

    UpChuck spits the bit.

  • DR at The Galaxy, Marietta, GA

YHC is DR in Marietta because DOD/DOG (Dear Ol’ Dad/Dear Ol’ Grandad) is in the hospital after a bad fall. Prayers welcome!

Being with the PAX this morning was a needed boost. Wideright spoke fondly of ZZQ in Richmond and wishes he could convince his M that it is on the way to Ohio.

Not hard to remember the beatdown today: Long Slow 11s: 11s with chest press and tricep extensions at opposite ends of a long parking lot with a coupon. In between, travel Cusak-style (rifle carry). That was all we had time for – brutal!

  • What is the resting heart rate of a hibernating bear?

5 iron warriors converged at the Old Hundred to tackle the latest madness from the DTH experimenticon. Here’s how the PAX collectively shed about 15 pounds in sweat weight:

    • YHC took the PAX out in Prayer

NMS:  Holy smokefest batman! …it is QUITE clear YHC is out of Kettlebell Shape!  Thanks to the PAX for permitting me the opportunity to lead and for the accountability to push it hard. YHC is thinking Bon Air could use a Kettlebell AO. Our BB title comes from the question raised after Purple Rain shared he awoke this morning with a resting HR in the 30’s. Impressive? Worrying? Well, he is indeed a hairy man but he hasn’t yet reached hibernating bear level, which Siri tells us they have a HR of about 8bpm. Keep pushing fellas! The limits of your ability are where you set them. Yours AYE! ~DTH

Today’s beatdown was much different than last weeks with little much less milage. Tabata and the weights added something a little different.

Those with or close to respect remember many commercials and other things from the 80s.

    • When EF Hutton speaks, people listen.
    • Tonight, let’s make it a Lowenbrau. (Whatever happened to Lowenbrau?)

During the 2nd F at Local Cup, we were discussing past video games. YHC brought up “Combat” which was the free game when you bought the Atari 2600 console. Opus had already left and those remaining had never heard of the game. Combat was a classic Atari game, but if you are familiar with it, it is understandable why it has been forgotten. The game was so frustrating. You were flying a plane and shooting a laser. The laser would go off the right of the screen and then appear on the other side and blow up your plane. It did have other games but that is what I remember.

It was an honor to lead such a great group of men today.

    Announcements

So grab a helmet and your bike or your neighbor’s bike, kid’s bike, whatever, and get out to Mary on Friday at 5:30 AM.

    Prayers to Labrat’s daughter’s boyfriend.

    • FLATTY took the PAX out in Prayer

NMS:  Upon completion of this brutal little sweatfest someone commented “we haven’t had a beatdown like that here in a long time” to which Bootleg said “you mean since last week?” And then Bootleg regaled us on Bodos’ ninja warrior badassery, and we all agreed that Bodos is the most awesome combination of graceful joy and formidable competitor we’ve all ever encountered. The story of his recent cloth-lining accident was also retold, and after Flatty told us all the terrible ways that kind of injury causes certain death, YHC had the epiphany that it was probably Bodos dedication to remaining physically fit (likely the most fit pastor in all of RVA) that saved his life. Thanks to F3, his strong neck muscles saved his life! So, here’s the lesson on PREPAREDNESS for all of us directly from the Q Source – we must maintain the daily disciplines to get ready for the expected, and be ready for the unexpected. Yours AYE! ~DTH

We truly embody FREEDOM – for ourselves, our brotherhood, our communities, our country, and in our faith. Loved seeing so many PAX from all over RVA, and welcome NIGHTSTAND (Hayden Mulchin) – so nicknamed as he spends a lot of time as a caretaker for his elderly veteran grandfather. Looking back it was cool to see that each team won an event! Great effort everyone!!! Brothers, what we have in F3, truly EVERY man needs in his life, whether he knows it now or not. Be FEARLESS in your invitation to join you in F3, and together we will reach every community in RVA. Happy Independence Day brothers! Yours AYE! ~DTH
