  • 12 Days of Christmas—Grid Iron Style

It’s that time of year. Time for 12 Days of Christmas. After a brief warmup (including 10 Burpees), we headed to the soccer field.

First stop was pickle ball courts (which were shockingly empty at 32 degrees) for 12 Dips, 12 Step Ups (each leg) and 12 Dips.

Soccer field for 12 Days of Christmas (1 day at a time, repeating the prior days…just like the song…you get it): 1 Freddy Mercury, 2 WW IIs, 3 Merkins, 4 Crunchy Frogs, 5 BURPEES, 6 Side Crunches, 7 Sumo Squats, 8 Hello Dollies, 9 APDs, 10 Forward Lunges, 11 Pickle Pounders, 12 American Hammers

After a well deserved 10 count, it was time for 4 corners (prostitute style). Attila seemed to want 4 corners of Burpees, but we decided on 5 Burpees, 10 WW IIs, 15 Squats, and 20 Merkins.

Back to play ground area to finish out with Abs (12 Heals to Heaven, 12 WWIs, 12 Irish Hammers, 12 American Hammers in Cadence…and finished with 12 Burpees (for a total Burpee count of 92 for the day).

  • Is Lighthouse Still Alive?

At my 10 yo son’s request, we played some Simon Says. After an introduction and disclaimer we launched into some SSHs, but only because Simon Said. Then arm circles and DQs, after Simon told us to. Fudd then arrived, so I took advantage of the situation. The pax was told to plank up. Not a soul moved, but when Fudd just barely headed towards a plank, I took the opportunity to call him out and a group punishment of 5 burpees was called b/c Simon didn’t say nothin. Now that Fudd was in on my shenanigans, no more missteps were made as we wrapped up w/ Mt. climbers, WWIIs and Merkins. Recover.

Next up, 11s w/ a twist: Mike Tysons and Jump Squats, with running across Gridiron’s gridiron b/w exercises. The twist: when doing 10 MT’s run 100 yards, 9 MTs run 90 yards, and so on. Recover. A 10 count was called to catch our breath. Enough of that. Let’s roll. Mosey to the center of the field.

Somewhere around this point in the work out, I considered how Lighthouse rarely misses a workout and he’s missed 3 this week. Unheard of. I questioned if he’s actually still alive. Apparently, he’s allowing work to interfere with F3.

For a little Leadership Development, we broke into 2 groups. Each group needed a team leader. Those who don’t Q much were encouraged to step up. Polly and Piglet stepped up. Each team needed to knock out 100 burpees, 200 LBCs, 300 SSHs, and touch 10 trees. Leaders were told to lead and all others were told to follow instructions. Leaders, nice work delegating, planning and communicating. Team members, nice work humbling yourselves and following instructions to accomplish a common goal. Despite the successes all around, someone had to lose. Team 2 won and did monkey humpers a little too close to Team 1 while they did a 5 penalty burpees for losing.

Next up for this group of middle-aged manimals, a procession of animal movements. Bear crawls, duck walks, crab walks, bunny hops and lunges (not sure what animal lunges).

Then we petted the friendly dogs of a random woman passing through. Enough messin around: Let’s move!

SPMS’s parking lot served as the spot for Eye of the Storm. 5 Burpees in the eye of the Storm and on the 4 edges of the Storm we did Mt climbers, plank jacks, AHs, and heels to heaven. Return to the Eye b/w exercises. GP modified with some stretches. After we ensured he was still alive, we headed over to the bleachers…

…for a Lindsay of bench kicks and dips. After a very secular convo about religion, we ran to the main parking lot in a vain attempt to warm our now frozen 6s.

With 12 men, a triple check was the obvious go to. P1 ran. P2 did Crab Cakes and P3 did WWIIs.

    BTTF.

Thank you Fudd for leading the Pax in some Mary while I grabbed my phone.

Final 60 seconds: Merkin contest. Go to failure. Good effort given by most (ha!). Our young gun, Piglet, was going strong and seemed to be an obvious favorite, but he started to lose steam when out of the corner of my eye was a man of a respectable age that just wasn’t stopping. Pinto, very impressive display of strength and perseverance. Congratulations on your victory sir!

    Numbers. Names.

Announcements: 2nd F on 2/9 at 12pm at Tres Machos (Pigskin can’t make it this month). Pinto will host a Xmas Party at his place on 12/20, I believe from 5pm-10pm. Fireman Ed will host a Remission Party on 12/27, come over around 4pm. Fudd has stepped up and snagged Breaking Bread on 12/27. Who’s gonna get 12/28? The Bridge is also on 12/27. See Kubota for deets.

No prayer requests. YHC took us out.

Moleskin: Today, try to think a little less about yourself and a little more about others.

Excellent Coffeeteria with this crew afterwards. I’m so freakin’ grateful to have you dudes in my life. Thx for letting me lead and I’ll see y’all in the gloom!

  • 4,000 Steps

In honor of those running the Richmond Marathon, Grid Iron paid tribute with a mini marathon of 4,000 steps, plus some boot camp activities.

1 lap (1/4 mile) of Indian Runs, followed by 26.2 Merkins and 26.2 WWIIs (OK maybe not .2).

2nd lap at your own pace. Followed by 26.2 Merkins and 26.2 WWIIs.

3rd lap…1/2 went forward, and 1/2 Bernie. Meet half way of track for 13.1 Burpees. Flap Jack to go the other 1/2 of track and finish with 13.1 more Burpees.

4th lap and finishing our 1 mile: Combo of Ukrainian Soldiers, Karaoke, Bear Crawl, Bernie, Sprint…with pauses of stretching, Merkins, Carolina Dry Docks, and more stretching.

Break Time with Abs: 8 sets of 26.2 and 13.1 count: WWIs, WWIIs, Side Crunches both side, Crunchy Frogs, American Hammers, Heals to Heaven, and Irish Hammers.

Jacob’s Ladder: 1 Merkin: 4 Air Press. Up to 10 sets. Mosey to benches for 26.2 Dips and 13.1 Dirkins.

    Stretch again, and we’re done.

  • Don’t prepare a 45 minute workout for a 60 minute AO

13 PAX showed up to Pickleballville expecting a beat down and they got one, slightly improvised.

COP: Helicopters, Jazzercise, arm circles, HRMs, MCs and LBCs. Hey I have 5 coupons. Let’s Mosey.

Elevens of diamond merkins and jump squats with a little moseying with coupons. For some reason, the passing of the coupons was not understood until they saw me take the coupon one way, see me pass it to Byproduct and then viola!!

Triple check: Derkins, coupon curls and run around the field goal post. Mosey to playground.

Another triple check: Flutters with coupon presses, heels to heaven and run to second lightpost on left.

Mosey to home base/bathroom wall: wall sits with pass the coupon after a press, donkey kicks, 5 burpees (because White Deer started b%^ching) and 10 HRMs. Repeato.

That was my workout and it was 7:45. Need to fill up another 15 minutes. Curb crawls to 5 down to 1 and then one set of 25 PLTs. Then American hammers, Freddie Mercuries and some stretches.

Bridge on 11/15 – see EF Hutton for details or let him know if you are interested. Thanksgiving workout 7 a.m. at Mary Mumford. Make sure you know where the closest AED is located at each AO (located at the building next to the main football field) and have someone with a phone on them (thank you Pigskin). Prayers are with Fudd’s sister, Handshake’s neice and others looking for work or going through health issues. Go Jets (is the over under on the Cleveland matchup 15). Also was nice that everyone that worked out went to coffee! Thanks for letting me lead!

  • Was that Chicharron?

File this in something I have not seen before at F3. Nine of us were enjoying a morning at Gridiron, and while we were close to wrapping up and doing some final stretching in the parking lot, Chicharron comes sprinting from the football field, runs past us, says nothing, does not look our way and then runs toward the original pickleball courts. He is wearing his orange F3 shirt so there is no doubt who it is, but he either was so focused he missed us, was being chased by an invisible bear, or was rescuing someone at the pickleball courts. This is what he missed:

Warmups started in the parking lot. We moved to the soft playground after Attila shit himself. Did some more warmups. Then did the first of many triple checks. This one was swing pumps, step ups and a run to the blue shed and back. After that we went to the the pull bars memorial site. They have been permanently moved to Twin Hickory Park. In remembrance, we did a triple check of dips on the pretend plastic edge border (now named crab dips), jump squats where you reach for the pretend pull up bars and the timer runs the path around all the courts.

We then took to the high ground and visited burpee hill. We did ten, nine and then eight burpees (with a ten count in between) and then moseyed to the new pickleball lot. There we continued the burpees but like the high school kids who were likely in our same spot last night, we did were fire and did 6 7.

This group of champions took over one of the champion courts and did five and then four burpees. Then we did a four corners of ten merkins per corner, bear crawling the entire way. That was a bad idea. We then finished with 3,2,1 (6) burpees.

We went back to the lot and did one last triple check. WW2, Flutters and a run to the track and back. After that we moseyed back to the original lot, did a little stretching and then Chicharron flew by. Hope he enjoyed his run.

Guessing many of the regulars were at the Bridge this morning. Next chance at the Bridge is 11/15 with EF Hutton. Reach out to him for more details.

Welcome back to our resident pharaoh, Pigskin.  Good to see you brother!

WTH with our pull-up bars?  County of Henrico has removed any evidence that they once existed!   I guess real workout equipment for real men in the middle a punch wimpy pickleball courts was too much for the that segment of the population.  The whereabouts of our pull-up bars will likely remain a mystery.

Prayers up for those looking for jobs, dealing with cancer and others dealing with the greatest of losses.

God is good all of the time!

  • Square, Circle, Triangle

Henrico County has gone too far…they’ve removed the monkey bars from Grid Iron. (Probably needed room for another pickle ball court). Never fear, the 10 of us headed to the soccer field for other elementary (Squid Game) exercises:

Square: 5, 10, 15, 20 exercises in every corner. Started with Merkins. Did a round of Carolina Dry Docks, a round of Staggered Arm Merkins and a round of Sumo Squats.

Triangle: 5 Burpees in 3 corners of the soccer field, and end back at Circle for more of a break (abs):

Circle: Took a break around the midfield circle for 100 abs: 25 WWIIs, 25 Side Crunch (each side), 25 Heals to Heaven. Later, between other rounds of Square and Triange we hit: 10 Irish Hammers, 15 Rollups, 25 Crunchy Frogs, 25 WWIs, 2 sets of 25 PLTs, and 50 American Hammers. Ended with Jack Web of 1:4 Merkins:Air Press

Cool down, stretching, and off to Starbucks after COT.
