Tuckahoe Elementary

  • Various Ways to Use a Leaf Blower

Twelve Tuckahoegans fought off the frost for a hot potato between Splinter and Fudd.  No one signed up for the Q so YHC took it first and Fudd took us home.  Mosey to the sea of tranquility for COP.  The rest of it went something like this:

    COP – All IC
    27x SSH
    11x Burpees
    27x MCs
    11x DQs
    11x Knee Jumps

    The Thang
Stay on the blacktop ocean for 11s.  Start at one end of the blacktop and perform 10 merkins.  Run to the other end and complete 1 jump squat.  Back to the other end for 9 merkins, etc until 1-10.  Plank-o-rama when complete.

Mosey to the main parking lot for clockwork merkins.  27 merkins on the bernie sanders hill in each of 4 clock directions.  Start at 12, then 3, 6 and 9.  Mix in 11 reps of various leg exercises between merkin sets.  Lt Dans, Squats, Ball Jumpers, Squats.  Various Al Gore positions after leg exercises.

Toss the ball to Fudd for the remainder.  Mosey to the front of the school for tunnel of love.  Partner up and face each other Al Gore style while the pax bear crawls through the tunnel.  Start at the sidewalk and work our way to the school sign.  Audible nixed the repeat back to the sidewalk.  Listen to Honey Do count while Fudd collects his sippy cup.

Slide down the hill to the LED lit parking lot for three rounds of polar bears and bus loop tracers.  Polar bear from one oend of hte parking lot to the stop sign followed by a loop around the drop off loop.  More Al Gores to finish.

Slip on over to the flag for a little mary.  Fudd kept the 27 theme going with 27x flutter kicks, LBCs and box cutters.  YHC took us out.

    Moleskin
Everyone was lively with post turkey day chatter today.  Two Can only gained 1 pound over the weekend and is down to his fighting weight.  Some of the PAX was eager to learn of Fudd’s famous Bridge of Hate.  Two Can is now ready.

Love Seat procured a new backpack leaf blower before Thanksgiving and didn’t take it off the entire weekend.  Various uses include cooling off an over cooked turkey and revving it up to clean off plates post feast.  A man and his power toys are hard to split.

The tunnel of love was the longest single span YHC has endured staring deep into Fudd’s eyes.  Holding hands while in Al Gore position only lasted a split second.

No one figured out the significance of 27 and 11 until the very end.  Fudd was confused but still stuck with the theme.  11/27 is YHCs daughter’s b-day so a tribute felt appropriate.

    Splinter out

  • Milk Run

9 peered out on this rainy school holiday morning for a special edition of Hoedown.  One Hoedown a week just isn’t enough.

Ronnie took lead of the mosey to the front of the school for the COP:

    • SSH
    • Imperial Walkers
    • Merkins
    • Arm Circles
    • Russian Soldiers (or is it Rushing Shoulders?)

Hand off Q to Splinter for mosey to the sea of blacktop.  Partner up – parent and 2.0 – for the following:

    • Round 1 – Partner 1 runs the length of the blacktop and back while partner 2 does Merkins; flip and repeat
    • Round 2 – Partner 1 backward runs the length of the blacktop and back while partner 2 does WWII; flip and repeat
    • Round 3 – Partner 1 karaokes the length of the blacktop and back while partner 2 does squats; flip and repeat

Hand off Q to Lockjaw  for PLT: 25 count three times through for everyone.  Mosey to the back playground field for Triple Check.

    • BTTW
    • Lt Dans
    • Run a lap of the track

Bear crawl across the field and hand off Q to Honey Do.  Mosey back to the school for some People’s Chair.

Circle up for Mary – Flutter Kicks, American Hammers.

    Finish with the Burpee Shuffle.

Da Vinci and Lockjaw took us out.

    NMS:

The rain cleared for a perfect workout this morning.  I am proud of these 2.0s for rising early and ready to go full of excitement and giving it all.  They had tremendous speed, but the form police would have written a few violations today.  In the end, the 2.0s enjoyed themselves as much as their Pax dads.

The title is from a strange half gallon of milk nested in the branches of a tree.  Very odd and the 2.0s confirmed it as smelly.  Science experiment?

Coffee at Shore Dog was awesome; as much for the camaraderie as it is the coffee.  2.0s enjoyed the hot chocolate.

    Announcements:

    • Special Mary tomorrow – 6:00 am start.  Come hear about Virginia’s Thanksgiving history or TYA’s revisionist history of the event.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw

  • Back to Basics

A record tying 17 Pax showed for a brisk Hoedown workout.

Mosey to the front of the school for COP.

Hill Billies, Don Quixote, Copperhead Squats, Russian Soldiers.  Note: 5 adhoc burpees were called to get Pax back to order.

    Number off for 4 Corners:

    • Corner 1 – Merkins off of the bike rack bars
    • Corner 2 – ABCs
    • Corner 3 – Boxcutters
    • Corner 4 – Box Jumps on the front steps

Three rounds with reps of 10, 20, and 30.  ABCs spelled Wahoos, Cavaliers, and University of Virginia in the respective rounds.

Mosey across the street to the lit church parking lot and commence Red Barchetta.

    • Across the lot and 100 SSHs, run back
    • 75% across and 75 Mountain Climbser, run back
    • 50% across and 50 LBCs, run back
    • 25% and 25 Merkins, run back
    • 10% and 10 Burpees, run back

    Partner up for Doras.

    • 100 Hand Release Merkins, 200 LBCs, 300 Flutter Kicks
    • The other partner runs the perimeter of the parking lot
    • Repeato until all exercises performed

Mosey back to the SF and circle up for Merkin Ring of Fire followed by American Hammers and Freddy Mercuries.

    Swiper took us out.

    NMS:

17 strong is an awesome turnout with Pax showing up from across the river and Richmond proper.  Hottest AO in town!

Despite the record turn out, danger awaited the Pax this morning.  A slight rise in the road marked the divider for the bus route.  Slight, but just enough to take Gomer Pyle down on his chest.  With great aplomb, he performed a Merkin, got up and ran like he meant to do it.  Well Done!

Finishing the Red Barchetta with burpees, a trash truck turned into the lot and the Pax was perfectly lined up with the trash dumpster.  A quick shift in location and all is well.  As one of the darkest AOs, Hoedown is also proving to be one with the most tripping hazards as well.

It was great seeing such solid numbers today and on a Monday without rain no less!

    Announcements:

    • Wednesday – Special kid friendly Hoedown for the 2.0s @ 6:30 am for 45 minutes.
    • Thursday – Thanksgiving workout at Mary.  Holiday time at 6:00 am with coffee afterwards.
    • Sunday – Breaking Bread – See Hardywood for details and to offer a hand.
    • Hoedown Pax – Plenty of time to get a VQ in at Hoedown before year end.  Sign up now!

    Time to Taper,

  • Giving Lindsay Some Love….

A Lucky 13 presented themselves at TES under slightly moist and chilly conditions. This is what transpired – more or less…

COP: DQ’s, Imperial Walkers, Arm Circles (front and back), LBC’s (52). Preceded each exercise with 10 Merkins

Lindsay Love: Proceed to near bottom of Lindsay court and partner up. Partner runs to top and back while other runs through 4 exercises: B-Jump Burpees, Bear Crawls, Polar Bears, Squat-then-jump.  Finish with 20 Merkins

Mosey to side of school near (very muddy) field. 26 Donkey Kicks. Bear Crawl to middle of field, perform 26 Merkins, then run to other side and perform 26 WWII’s.  Three rounds.

Four Corners: Merkins, J-Squats, LBCs, American Hammers. Start at 10, 20, then 30 each.

Burpee Shuffle: Person calls out number of burpees (1-3). No successive repeats.

    COT:

    NMS:

Little to report except for the state of the field which was extremely muddy. Given the damage YHC had done to the Mary Munford field on his first-ever Q, YHC called an audible to move to the asphalt.

Thanks to Splinter and Honeydo, Merkin total was tabulated at “225.”

The PAX was joined (briefly) by a nearby resident who was taking a day off from his usual workout group (rhymes with “Peal Seam”). His visit ended after (cordially) pointing out to YHC that our Donkey-Kicks were leaving mud on the TMS brick wall. His observation was acknowledged. (A confounded YHC also acknowledged a couple of other things that were left unsaid.)

Announcements: See Marv for all things VCU – including tickets to tonight’s game (and future games for that matter).

    Saab abides (with exceptions)

  • Saab Is The New Fudd

    MOLESKIN

Note to self and future Qs, don’t go to Hoedown alone carrying a notepad on a Sunday afternoon to scope out the place, you’ll get some looks.  The kind YHC imagines Saab gets on a regular basis.  Speaking of Saabski, either Corporate has granted him sovereignty over the Hoedown domain and he feels the need to vet its Qs, or Saab is the new Fudd with all the questions.  Not a question from Fudd, so it couldn’t have been YHC’s instructions.  BTW (learned that from a millennial, which is anyone born 11/7/80 or later FYI (another millennial term)), where is Corporate proper?  Is it that Tuckahoe Takeover week proved the nanoregion is self-sustaining, or does Corporate fear a similar fate for Batteau as Punisher?  Good to see Singer out tapering, Lockjaw, though absent, would approve.  Those repeated Bernies will not help, unfortunately.  Honeydo is celebrating no shave November and also banned from Hoedown during daylight hours, or he should be.  Lab Rat flew somewhat under the radar today, though he did question YHC’s claim that no head lamp would be required.  Several of the PAX continue to hoof it to the AO, way to get in those extra steps.  Welcome FNG Tosser, not of the salad variety.  Awkward moment of the morning came as YHC was face to face with Fudd when calling out the antithesis of Wilson’s wife.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lab Rat wants 3rd F ideas

UpChuck had an idea the PAX may not ignore

  • Room Numbers

Eight PAX were not scared of a little light rain and showed up at Tuckahoe for the latest iteration of a Hoedown.  Mosey to the front of the school for COP that went something like this:

    COP
    20x SSH
    15x Russian Soldiers
10x Don Quixotes (because Keymaster needed some more stretching)
    15x Copperhead Squats
    15x Arm Circles

    The Thang
Quick mosey to the western most corner of the school for the start of today’s exercise.  Room Numbers.  Every time we get to a room number in the window we stop and do that many of a certain exercise.  Exercises were merkins, squats, and WWIIs.  Alternate between bear crawling and lunging between numbers in the window.  Work our way all the way around the school increasing to number 35 before a slight descent.  Burpees were added for the basement room numbers.

Mosey back to the lighted pathway and partner up for jerkins.  Two sets of 10 jerkins for each partner.

Quick jaunt back to our favorite lit concrete pad for some ring of fire.  10x each starting with Two Can and passing around the circle.

Numberama, Namearama, BOM & YHC took us out.

    Moleskin
A few Tuckahoe regulars were missing this morning.  Must have been due to conflict or watching the World Series.  Other excuses will not be accepted.

Kubota was the only brave sole that went short sleeve and no gloves.  That’s a lot of bear crawling sans gloves.  Well done sir.  Mr. Holland came in a close second for the superlative for best outfit choice with his pearly white half marathon shirt from a few years ago.  Said shirt is still pearly white on the front but now contains a perfectly rectangular brown patch covering the entire back.

All in all, form was magical today.  Toga would have been proud.  Even as the reps increased throughout the workout the PAX kept strong form.  Finishing with Lockjaw’s nose to the ground merkins was a testament to Tuckahoe’s readiness for November.

Ronnie may need to go visit Richmond’s #1 Chiropractor service as he performed about 5 WWIIs on a boulder protruding from the mud.  I hear their granite abstraction service is top notch.

    Announcements
    – November merkin challenge is up.  See the news for more info:  https://backblasts.f3rva.org/2017/10/27/november-merkin-challenge-2017/
    – There is also a breathing challenge
    – Contact YHC if any new Tuckahoegans want to step up to lead a Hoedown.  Any and all can lead.
    – Lockjaw appeared out of the mist with his trademark Turkey Trot shirt.  Sign up if you want to obtain a legendary shirt yourself.

    Splinter out.

  • What would Honey Do Do…

A stalwart 16 descended upon Tuckahoe for light calisthenics.  This is what transpired…

COP:  Helicopters, DQs, Imperial Walkers, Merkins, LBCs

Lindsay: Start at top of hill, perform 30 Heels to Heaven, run down hill and perform 10 Merkins.  Repeato.  Decrement/Increment each by 5 until you reach 10 and 30.

Run to back of school.  Perform x Donkey Kicks, Bear Crawl 10 or so yards, perform x Merkins, run to opposite side of field and perform x Squats. Repeato.    x=10, 15, 20, 25, 30

Build a Burpee:  Perform 1 merkin , 1 Jump Squat, 1 Burpee.  Then perform 2 of each, etc.  Repeato until finish at 7 Burpees.  Do this while running from one end of the court to the other (and back)…stopping in middle for whatever exercise is next.

Minutes of Mary:  Hello Dollys, Flutter Kicks, Reverse Crunches (per Upchuck), and LBCs

    Moleskin:

Most times YHC approaches a workout he asks himself “what can he hack from one of HoneyDo’s prior beatdowns, or at least inflict so as the PAX is similarly smoked.”  While the answer usually doesn’t quite make the bar, it is fun trying.  The following are some brief observations…

    • Upchuck was the first to finish the first set of H-to-H during the Lindsays, which seemed humanly impossible given the count was 30.  He promptly returned to the PAX and continued on…acknowledging he maintains his own special counting scheme
    • Fudd had his share of questions this morning.  Had YHC bothered to listen, he assumes they were all good ones.
    • As usual, YHC was terrible during the instruction period.  Build a Burpee is often met with many questions (Fudd notwithstanding) and today was no different.  He will work on this for future endeavors (or maybe not).
    • KeyMaster introduced our FNG Kubota (he is in sales for John Deere).  Welcome.

  • Proper trimming leads to better results

14 strong gathered at Hoedown to enjoy the properly maintained grassy sections of TES. It only rained when the PAX were facing skyward on the ground. It went down with:

COP – Invisible Jump Ropes, Don Qs, Helicopters, Merkins, Freddy Mercurys. Head up to top field, partner up- 50 Pull-ups between 2 partners.

Face school- Bear Crawl across field, lunge back. Then broad jump across field, lunge back. Partner up – Wheelbarrow across and back. Then Crab Walk, lunge back.

Line up for Human Centipede. 1 time through. Mosey to 3rd Prez Parking lot. Derkins down by five from 20 across lot. Karaoke across. Then 15 Jump Squats each end 4 time.

Back to front of school for 3 sets of 20 PLTs. Fish up with 3 sets of: 20 Donkey Kicks and 5 Burpees. COT and Marv took us out.

NMS – The rain started as soon as we started Freddy Mercurys but stopped and held off until we hit the ground again for PLTs near the end. Otherwise perfect weather. And nice to cover an AO without the need of a machete. The PAX does enjoy a trimmed AO to play with, maybe except Saab who prefers the 70s style he grew up with.

The upper field was plent bright but just dark enough to keep form police at bay. The 50 Pull-ups to start woke the pax up and made for fun as some taller pax had to improvise on the playsets.

The 3rd Prez Parking lot offers a well lit space to play with. The Hoedown AO continues to expand. Abut half the pax ran in to the AO and Marv is dreaming of the day he can resume that tradition.

Announcements – Puppy pile and optional 2nd hour of Dogpile this Saturday.

  • Paradise

A Mighty 12 came out for a wet Hoedown and to see the AO that last week’s inaugural seventeen have been talking about.

It started out in the bus loop with COP:

    • Invisible Jump Rope (bringing a little Punisher to Hoedown)
    • Copperhead Squats
    • Slow Don Quixotes
    • Russian Soldiers

Mosey down Lindsay Drive to Lindsay Court all the way down the hill to the end.  Time for some Lindsays.  Start with 30 merkins and 10 Box Cutters flipping positions and increasing/decreasing count by five til you are at 10 and 30.

Partner up for Catch Me If You Can.  Partner 1 runs up the hill backwards while partner 2 does three burpees and runs to their partner.  Swap roles and repeat until you reach the stop sign.

Cross the road and bear crawl up the hill.  Mosey to the back play ground for modified 4 Corners.  It’s modified in that three of the stations are in a row and a fourth across the track.  At the end of the day, 4 stations and a lap around the track.

    • Station 1 – Derkins with legs suspended by swings
    • Station 2 – Suspend yourself from the monkey bars and leg lifts
    • Station 3 – Dips off the benches
    • Station 4- Box Jumps

20 of each exercise and repeato 3 times.

Finish up with 11s – WWII, run across the field, Scorpions

Mosey Back to SF.  Labrat took us out.

    NMS:

After last week’s total darkness, we had more ambient light even with the clouds and rain.  Headlights aided us in our workout trek this morning.  Saab called the Lindsays “Lazy Lindsays” since we didn’t run between exercises.  Commentary was quickly replaced by grunting and gyrations in the street as the full effect of the Lindsay was experienced.  YHC chose that spot in proximity to a potential EH mark.  Nothing says come out and play like twelve guys in your street working out.

For those who came for the Lockjaw history lesson, as you were running backwards up the road there was a place of significance to your right.  There is an 1830s farmhouse owned by Dr. Patterson named Paradise.  This is where Tuckhoe Elementary held their first classes in the basement prior to the construction of the current school.  Besides being a local doctor, he was a captain of the tobacco industry founding the Lucky Strike brand among others.  As you can probably deduce, Patterson Avenue is named after him since it went through his land.

Finally, the box jumps and derkins were a special challenge.  Derkins off of a moving swing is a good core exercise as well.  The box jumps were on a four cornered spring device.  When the Pax hit is just right it would catapult the Pax on the opposing side like a trampoline.  Timing is everything.

    Announcements:

    • For those driving to Hoedown, do not park in the row of spaces adjacent to the bus loop.  Early arriving teachers prefer these spots.  Let’s keep the peace in our new AO.
    •   Upchuck is starting up a double dog dare monthly workout on October 21.  Come for Dogpile and stay for a second hour.  This month it coincides with Puppy Pile, but ongoing it may not.
    • Puppy Pile on October 21 @ 7am.  Kid friendly workout at the Carillon.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw

  • The Piccolo and a Hoedown

Seventeen Tuckahoeians (Tuckahoegans?) gathered around the bus loop for their first ever Hoedown.  5 arrived on foot, only one brave sole one 2 wheels, the others by traditional means.  The excitement was high this morning.  Mosey to the giant paved ocean for COP:

    COP
    SSH x20
    MC x20
Arm Circles forward / backwards x15
    Copperhead Squats x15

    The Thang
Mosey to the front of the school for some Dora.  Partner up for a combined 100/200/300 of 3 different exercises.  Exercises were incline merkins, box jumps, LBCs.  One partner runs down the sidewalk & stairs to the parking lot & returns while the other performs exercises.  Plankorama when done.

Slide around to the back of the school by the gym for the first iteration of triple check.  Jerkins, Al Gore while third partner bear crawls down the hill and back up.  More Al Gore while the PAX completes.

Pass to Lockjaw for indigenous people pole smoker run.  Everyone grab a pole (virtual or otherwise) and complete flutter kicks.  Person at the end of the line does 5 HTH then runs to the front.  Complete 2 times through.

Quick skip over to the concrete pad by the bus loop.  Second round of triple check including BTTW, elbow plank and lap around the bus loop.

Potporri of exercises to close us out including 25 donkey kicks, ring of fire, box cutters and APDs.

BOM & Honeydo took us out.

    Moleskin
Heck of a great first morning for a Hoedown.  YHC would have been happy with 5 or 6 but in the end we had 17.  Two Can was happy that he could wake up and drive 90 seconds to the AO.  He was still LIFO.

They AO may be small, but there are plenty of areas to explore.  No lack of jungle gyms to use for various exercises.  The back field may be best used during a full moon as it is quite dark back there.

Fudd announced to the PAX the exact location where he learned to play the piccolo.  He may have been by himself while he was learning.  Not exactly sure.

Great to see faces YHC normally sees scattered across the various AOs.  Hoedown is on the Q signup sheet so sign up for weeks to come.

    Announcements
    – RRRC Turkey Trot registration opened.  Registration here.  Great turkey day run.
    – Bear creek registration open also.  First Sunday in December.
