  • Crawlin’ in the Rain

Five of the faithful gathered in the Gloom at Punisher on a rainy Monday morning. Johnsonville (YHC) as a few minutes late on account of a fairly bad single-car accident on 195 by the Woodfin HQ. Praying there were not serious injuries. Chum started things out, and this is how it went down, more or less:

Mosey to west side of school form COP warmup.

Chum led ssh, DonQuiotes, and, when YHC arrived, Hillbillies. I don’t really know what he led prior to the Hillbillies, but I’ve been around long enough to make sh** up.

YHC took over for a slaughter starter a la 10 minutes of burpees.

Mosey around the north side of the school to the bus loop.

Classic descending curb crawl from 8 to 1, or something like that.

    COP 20x Dollies

Line up with hands on curb for plank walks in cadence. 20x left. 20x right.

    COP 20x Freddie Mercs

Edit: Line up with hands on curb for plank walks in cadence. 20x left. 20x right.

Mosey to soccer field. Line up on end line for Dora with 100x pole smokers, 200x crab cakes, 300x nothing (ran out of time). Runner crab walked 20 steps, then ran to end line and back.

Return to VSF in the driving rain. YHC took us out.

    MOLESKIN:

We had a bit of a beaten up, injured crowd this morning. Clavin was nursing a broken rib, so YHC’s lineup of exercises was not idea. He persevered and alternated when needed.

The 10 minutes of burpees seemed light compared to Charles Bronson / wheelbarrows / sand pit crawls last week.

Thanks for letting me lead, Jville

  • Good things come in 3’s, or 7’s

6 old salts and one really old, vehicularly challenged beefcake shook off the chill of an early fall morning to help ol’ BT celebrate his 3rd anniversary with F3.  After pleasantries were exchanged, we all got down to business.

    THE THANG:

Mosey to side of the school for COP:

    Abe Vigodas x 10, SSH x 20, Russian Soldier x 20, Merkin (YHC prefers this spelling) x 10, LBC x 20

Mosey to soccer field behind school for Super 7’s: 7 burpees, sprint across field, 7 merkins/7squats, sprint back.  Repeat x 7.

Mosey to parking lot circle and partner up for 1k/5k:  exercises were 100 merkins, 200 Freddie Mercs, 300 flutter kicks, 400 LBC.  PAX holds Al Gore until everyone is finished.

Gather around parking circle for Burp Dans (Lt. Dan followed by a burpee).  AMRAP but stop when first PAX reaches 10 reps.

Mosey back to flag for COT.  BT took us out.

Announcements:  1yr Hampton Roads anniversary coming up, keep an eye out.  C’ville 4-miler also on the horizon.  Fall is busy, so make sure to get out and post before the dreary winter gloom descends upon us.

    MOLESKIN:

Between work travel and the dreaded man cold, YHC has been MIA for the better part of 2 weeks, so needless to say there was some concern that he would even be able to make it through a workout, much less a Q.  But alas, BT’s name was on the Q sheet and this being his 3rd anniversary with this distinguished group of men it had to be done.  Additionally, an oh-so-subtle drag race between YHC and a certain lead-footed PAX member on the way to Punisher got the blood pumping, and all was right with the world.

The other concern was if anyone would show up.  The PAX has grown impressively, and AO’s have followed suit. So many options, would anyone travel to north side to engage the anniversary celebration?  Luckily, YHC ran into Pucker and Saab Friday evening and planted the seed.  Add a late text to ol’ Swirly Sunday who convinced Bleeder to ignore the pain of a long Indian Princess weekend and we had a PAX!  Goldberg was a nice addition along with Chum as the AO’s resident caretaker.

Speaking of Saab, he met up with us after a COP at the onset of the Super 7’s. Apparently, the LR failed him again, but this time he was able to make it back to the house to shuffle to another mode of transportation from the Crabtree fleet.  Bleeder has said he can fix anything with a “brick and a string,” so we have started a collection for bricks, string and any pocket change you can muster to get the LR in tiptop shape.  Give much, give often.

Fellas, as many have said many times before me, I am extremely thankful for this group.  Three years have flown by and I can’t imagine not being part of this brotherhood.  Many of you I would not have had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know without F3, and that would be a great misfortune to me.  You inspire, encourage, and support without pause or concern, and thankfully you dish out an equal amount of grief and ball-busting ridicule.   And on occasion, the banter is both intelligent and mildly enjoyable.  It is all MUCH appreciated and substantially needed.  See you all in the gloom.

    Aye!!

    -BT

  • And Then There Were Two

Two sturdy timbers sprouted early for a pre-dawn nature expedition, Punisher-style.  Here’s how The Thang went down:

COP: Mosey the “long way” around the school to Hermitage side of school.
    SSHs x50
Calf stretches (’cause YHC was feelin’ tight)
    Hill Billies x15
    Arm Circles x15
    Don Quixotes x15
    Torso stretch
    LBCs x20
    Mercans x10

Mosey 27 feet to the southeast and reassemble at the Picnic Area for Elevens:
    Dips and Donkey Kicks

    Mosey to Laburnum Side of School for Mercan Ladder (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2)

Four-Part Trail of Pain around parking circle and out to Hermitage:
    Mercans x10
    LBCs x15
    Reverse crunches x15
    Squats x15

Mosey to parking circle for COT

Number-rama, Name-a-rama, YHC took us out.

    Announcements:
In-AO Coffeteria Saturday at Convergence (at Gridiron) – NO DOGPILE

    Mumblechatter:
Great to catch up with Chernobyl this morning.  He’s new-ish to F3, so it’s great to introduce him to some of the abbreviations and traditions that YHC learned from others.  Today the following came up:
    FEBA
    Goldberg
Causing a random woman to pause upon seeing us in The Gloom.

Today’s suspicions were supplied by a pony-tailed blonde and her German Sheppard (F3 name Think Twice) who stopped a solid 20 yards from the PAX, while we were just popping off some LBC’s along the sidewalk.  The young lady offered a look that simultaneously conveyed (in a Foghorn – Leghorn fashion), “What, I say what, are you boys doin’?” and yet also, “If you approach me, I drop the leash.”

Graciously, the PAX conceded the sidewalk.  And, YHC signed Think Twice up for the BRR.

  • Stargazing

A dozen dedicated dudes posted for the latest offering of The Punisher under perfectly pleasant, not punishing, conditions.

The Thang:  Mosey along the Hermitage Road side of Linwood Holton Elementary School to a spot between the outdoor pavilion and the street for the startup COP that included 20 x, each, of SSHs, Hillbillies, Don Quixotes, and Russian Soldiers, 30 x LBCs, and 15 x Arm Circles, forward and back.

Stroll back down the Hermitage Road past the parking lot entrance.  Line up on the edge of the sidewalk, facing LHES.  Bear Crawl across the grassy knoll to the second tree line (maybe 15 or 20 yards away) for 30 x Carolina Dry Docks then Lunge Walk back for 30 x WWII Sit Ups and plank until all are done.  Repeat until three rounds are done.

Head to the school gym wall facing Laburnum Avenue for a Triple Check.  Twelve is apparently divisible by 3 four times, so this number of groups alternated between People’s Chair, Six Inches, and runs to the front sidewalk and back and each completed three rounds.  Plank until all are done.

Jog around back to the playground equipment for OYO completion of four rounds of 5 x Pullups and 5 x Burpees.  Head across the field in the direction of the northeast corner of the school yard, pausing to circle up and complete three rounds of 15 Merkins.

Hop up and get to the edge of the sidewalk to start a round of Sidewalk Mary, picking a sidewalk square and completing one of three exercises:  10 x LBCs with right leg extended, 10 x Box Cutters, and 10 x LBCs with left leg extended.  Rise and jog to the next available square for the next exercise.  Repeat, working in the direction of Laburnum Avenue, turning the corner and stopping at the first large tree.  About half way through this sequence, several of the PAX pointed to the International Space Station passing overhead.

Quick stretching sequence in the front school yard, then return to the ShovelFlag.  COT and Lab Rat took us out.

Moleskin: Nice turnout fellas.  Good energy within the group.  The LBCs were incorporated to ensure that all assembled had absorbed a refreshing layer of morning dew, but the morning’s clear sky allowed constellation spotting, so we held the Dead Cockroach position, briefly, afterwards.  Our early morning space observations continued when, about halfway through the sidewalk sequence one of the PAX (Chernobyl maybe) pointed to the overhead passing of the International Space Station.

Announcements:  1) Convergence – September 30th at GridIron AO (Pouncey Tract Park) – more details to follow, 2) Bear Creek 10 Miler sign up open, and 3) Tuckahoe Takeover next week.

  • Is that your pickle pounder?

A mighty four redwoods emerged today for Punisher.

COP – Helicopters, Don Quixote, Hillbillies, Russian Soldiers, LBCs.

First Up – Triple Check – Plerkins and run to the light post in the median.

Mosey over to the picnic table for 11s – Merkins and dips.

YHC missed this event from this past weekend’s longhouse, so we progressed behind the school with “bridges and boulders”.  Finish with a jog to the playground.

    7 pullups and 20 PLT – 3x through

    Lindseys! Scorpions and box cutters.

Honeymoon suite ring of fire – Monkey humpers, diamond merkins, APDs, pickle pounders.

Mosey to the bus loop for fireman carry the long side of the loop.  Repeat.

Make our way to the front of the school for round 2 of triple check.  Finish with what we started, except this time through we did BTTW and flutter kicks, while the runner goes to the far tree line and back.

    Keymaster took us out.

    NMS:

YHC arrived early this morning and secured the AO.  Ten minutes to go and no one was there.  Will anyone show?  Alas, Dexter pulls in with Sabotage behind him and makes a full loop and leaves!  Sabotage almost leaves but parks instead as this is his first time to this AO.  Splinter joins us with Keymaster arriving early in the COP.

A small Pax today with a few others working out on their own in the shadows.  Might be an opportunity to EH in the future.  Our pickle pounders started out in diverse form as we had multiple interpretations.  Splinter set us straight with the official motion.  Seems the pax need more practice with the pickle pounders.

It was great to lead this fine group this morning.  Good to see new faces at Punisher and hope to see Sabotage and Keymaster back soon.

As you go forward today, think of all that you have to be thankful.  Health, friends, and family.

    Announcements:

    • Tuckahoe Takeover – less than two weeks away.
    • Bear Creek 10 miler – sign up is open now

  • Working on Our Ground Game – Volume 1

Five ground pounders represented for the Labor Day edition of The Punisher, a special celebration of the Hoos victory over The Tribe in their tri-ennial match-up (28-10 win for the Good Guys).  Here’s more-or-less how it went down, all in Linwood Holton’s yard (omage to Swirly).

    COP

    3/4 run around building
    Don Quixote x10
    Hillbillies x28
    SSHs x28 (spelling U-V-A)
    Reverse crunches x10
    Mercans x10

    Mosey to the…wait…1 burpee…to celebrate W&M’s one third-down conversion.

Mosey to Bus Circle for Ground Game, Vol. 1, Part 1
One member of our Tribe started each round as the bear, as in, bear crawling around the parking lot loop.  The others were runners making a loop of the circle.  The first man to catch the bear became the bear.  Continue until all 5 men served as the bear.
First round: 3 burpees when bear was caught.
    Second round: 10 squats.
    Third round: 10 LBCs.

Mosey to Wall for Ground Game, Vol. 1, Part 2
3 rounds of personal ground game.
First round: 30 donkey kicks, army crawl, then 5 burpees…burpees AMRAP for the six.
Second round: BTTW to a 20 count, army crawl, then 5 burpees…BTTW for the six.
Third round: 30 4-count Freddie Mercury, army crawl, then 5 burpees…FM’s AMRAP for the six.

    Extemporaneous Team Building Exercise:
One repetition for each letter in the word.  x20 for T, x18 for R, x9 for I, x2 for B, x5 for E.  Frankly, YHC has forgotten the order of the exercises, but believes LBCs, SSHs, mercans, burpees and one other exercise were involved.

Light Post Run for Ground Game, Vol. 1, Part 3

Run from wall to Monticello on a straight line, right turn to Laburnum, right turn to Hermitage, right turn to home.
At each electrical post (lamps, school zone, security camera, crossing sign, etc.), perform exercise.  Include posts on opposite side of street.
    Illuminated light: 5 mercans
    Extinguished light: 5 burpees

    Mosey to Flag
    45 seconds of Mary…10 four-count reverse crunches

Number-rama, Name-a-rama, YHC took us out.

    Announcements:
BRR this weekend…stay safe, stay healthy, and ABT
Reese-Strong 5K (work on 5k the Hard Way)
    Convergence September 30

    NMS

YHC was happy to see a stalwart group post this morning following a neighborhood back-to-school / last-day-of-summer event Sunday night.  The group was split between celebrants and mourners after UVa’s victory over The Tribe.  After a 168 yard W&M rushing performance against a suspect UVa D-line and an equally poor showing by the Hoos rushing attack, today’s sunny and 70 conditions offered just the weather to work on our ground game.

YHC confesses to being somewhat haphazard for this morning’s beatdown.  Not having Q’d in a bit, YHC’s timing was off.  Thank you for your indulgences.

  • Elective sofa sleeping

Sixty degree weather and reduced humidity brought a PAX of 7 for The Punisher.  As I’m sure is true in other F3 households, YHC’s better half appreciates the opportunity to offer advice and counsel in the pre-Gloom gloom as YHC bumps the bed and kicks shoes while feeling in the dark for pre-selected F3 attire.  Not.  So following a 3:30 AM whiz, YHC collected clothing and accessories and headed downstairs to sleep one additional hour on the sofa.  I’m sure M Chum appreciated this.

Clavin, Honey Do, Lockjaw, and Saab were in the Holton Elementary parking lot early and were sporting F3 gear.  Dexter, Offshore, and YHC arrived at the same time with enough time to plant the ShovelFlag in the hard ground and to say a few words to one another.

The Thang:  Mosey across the parking lot and into the front field for COP with Seal Jacks, Don Quixotes, Imaginary Jump Ropes, Helicopters, and Hillbillies – all x 20 – followed by Arm Circles – small and big, forward and reverse.  Honeydo pointed out, mid-exercise, that the Jump Ropes have previously been referred to as Invisible and not Imaginary.  Offshore later argued that Imaginary made more sense.

Off Campus portion of the workout:  Jog south from the school to the grassy median at Wilmington and Hermitage and complete the following sequence of exercises:  Merkins, Squats, Box Cutters, Carolina Dry Docks, Forward Lunges (single count), Flutter Kicks (double count), and Shoulder Taps (single count).  Complete 30 of the first exercise at this stop and 15 of the others.  Wait for all to finish.  Jog down Hermitage to the next grassy median for the same sequence, but with 30 of the second exercise and 15 of the others.  Repeat the sequence, moving the 30 reps through the sequence at each stop – @ Confederate, @ Palmyra, @ Westwood, and back.  Seven stops total.

Return to the school grounds for 5 Burpees and 25 APDs, then COT.  YHC took us out.

TNM:  Nice work fellas.  Hope you are recovering Clavin.

    Announcements:  BRR – September 8th and 9th,  ReeseStrong 5K – September 16th, and Convergence – September 30th.

  • The Great American Eclipse

A lucky 12 + 1 FNG convened this AM at the Punisher for a themed workout of sorts.  Gather around the shovel flag for pleasantries plus a few words with Fudd then off we went.  Mosey to the back of the school for COP.  It went something like this:

    COP
    SSH x20
    Don Quixotes x10
    Arm Circles x15
    Mountain Climbers x20
    LBCs x20

    The Eclipse Theme
The 400.  The sun is about 400 times the size of the moon and is also roughly 400 times the distance from earth.  Simple geometry will tell us that is why the moon and the sun are roughly the same size in the sky.  The PAX honored this magnificence in our solar system by completing 400 exercises.  20 reps of 20 different exercises.  Exercises were all OYO except the last:

Merkin, forward lunge (20 each leg), dips, 4 count flutter kicks
Werkin, jump squat, side tricep extension, 2 count american hammer
Diamond merkin, side lunge (20 each leg), side tricep extension (other arm), 2 count freddy mercuries
Staggered merkin (right hand forward), monkey humpers, pull ups, hello dollys
Staggered merkin (left hand forward), step back lunge (20 each leg), burpees, 4 count LBCs IC

2:40.  If you happen to be in the totality path, the maximum amount of total darkness today will be 2 minutes and 40 seconds.  2 minutes and 40 second plank.

10/22/2134 BC.  This is arguably the date of the first recorded solar eclipse.  If you happened to be one of the two fortunate Chinese astronomers on that date then it was your last day on earth.  Those two were executed for failing to predict the solar eclipse.  We respected their memory with 10 burpees, 22 merkins, 21 squats and 34 WWIIs.

Mosey back around to the front of the school so Viral can see the rest of the AO.

5/29/1919.  Einstein and Newton were at battle.  Einstein won on this day.  His theory of relativity was proven by the May 29, 1919 solar eclipse.  In short, the visibility of stars immediately near the sun during a total eclipse and the visibility of light bending around those stars proved one key component of relativity.  It has to do with the warping of space time.  Read more to find out.  5 burpees, 29 merkins, 19 LBCs, 19 rosalitas.

Circle up  and YHC took us out.

    Moleskin
Despite numerous accusations of #fakenews during the workout, each of these facts are true.  At least if you believe the Internet. Since Al Gore invented it then it must be true.  Welcome Ghosttown.  Good luck in Chattanooga.

There is some dispute as to the distance traveled during today’s workout.  Conspiracy had .54 miles while Goldberg had just over .6.  For a moment there YHC thought the PAX was going to see fireworks a-la the upcoming Mayweather vs McGregor fight.  No scores were settled so you are OYO to log accurate miles for this month’s challenge.

Fudd, in typical #AAF fashion, did not listen much during the workout.  He did manage to make the 2:40 of plank slightly more exciting by bear crawling to the path of the eclipse.  He accurately represented this by hovering his Fudd Jr directly over South Carolina.  Viral followed suit by meandering towards Montana.

Form police was in full effect today.  ‘Nuff said.

Great day for a workout and (recent) record number at Punisher.  According to Big Data, a Honeydo workout from April still holds that record with 14.  Solid work everyone.

    Announcements
GoFundMe sites are available to support education related expenses for the two state troopers that died in last week’s incident.  Viral and Goldberg have details they will share.  The State Police will cover the tuition for the kids but this is for other education expenses.

Be safe out there looking at the sky today fellas.  Contact Honeydo if you need a source for fine quality eclipse glasses.

    Splinter out.

    Ring of Fire

COT with Saab taking us out.

    MOLESKIN:

We started off with a slaughter starter and ended with a ring of fire. The stuff in the middle was not any easier, but it was 100% tried-and-true F3. We were on our hands much of the morning. Offshore forgot his gloves (or maybe his wife finally threw them out). It was a bad day to go gloveless, and I could feel some hate coming my way…

Welcome back Saab, who has been nursing a knee injury. Saab was not 100%, and he modified some, but I glad he made it out. It was good to meet Dexter for the first time. It was good to catch up with men I have not seen in a while.

CHum Bucket did not appear on his home turf this morning. Perhaps he is traveling. I considered moseying the pax over to Chum’s house to give him an 0535 wake up call. A fear of Mrs. Chum led me to shy away from that course.

Great way to kick of the Southside takeover week! Good work, Men.

    Jville
