  • Weather Does Matter

3 men gathered for a Wednesday evening hill run.

    The Thang: Hillcrest loop x6.

    NMM:

The weather was amazing. The past few weeks have been a scorcher. Mid 90’s and 75%+ humidity. It has seemed more like swimming by the time we finished versus running. Today was a completely different story, it was 81 and breezy, with about 50% humidity. This made for a much easier and quicker run than the past several. Additionally, rather than being totally exhausted after the run, we were feeling good with extra energy to give if needed.

Honeydo slayed the hills today, he did 6 laps plus a run up Charmian on laps 1 and 4. He was moving along at a great clip. Aisle 5 continues to get stronger every week. He came up the hill for the final time with a ton of energy and a great pace going. Inspirational to see the type of improvement in his running over the past six months.

  • Afternoon swim

    The Thang and NMM:

7 Redwoods posted for an afternoon run around Hillcrest. Weather was 70 and sunny, 0% humidity. Perfect weather for a run in the early afternoon.

We did the Hillcrest loop, Q asked for 6 repetitions. Saab completed 8, Splinter 6 with an excursion onto some new territory, Swirly 6 with run up the Charmian Hill, 6 for DK, Circle K, and TYA and 4 for a Lifoing Lockjaw. Upon finishing the run we had some post run water and watermelon at the top of the hill. 2nd F ensued at TYA’s crib post run. A few observations:

    1. Despite the low humidity, we all looked like we had taken a dip in the river mid run. We were all soaking wet.

    2. DK packs heavy at all times. He had a dinner with a pal afterward. He brought a backpack with a change of clothes that would have crippled most Sherpas!

    3. TYA jettisoned his shirt on the third loop because it weighed about 20 pounds. I got lighter and whiter instantly. Apologies to the PAX and neighbors were given

    4. Circle K was deer hunting on his way around the loop. Wildlife as always was in abundance on the run. YHC does not have a keen hunting eye, so circle K helps me avoid the wildlife, but I did come face to face with one of our friends

    5. Splinter was out of commission for a couple weeks because of an old man problem (back problem from tying his shoes) Despite layoff, he was out in front with Saab for the first three laps

    6. I never saw Lockjaw on the loop, he just appeared at the top of hillcrest when I finished. Post workout I confirmed with others that LJ had indeed run some laps

    7. Saab is still trying to figure out when the BRR is. He has it on his calendar along with the Cloudsplitter but I think his calendar may be a bit different from the traditional one we all use.

  • Surface of the Sun

Five faithful gathered on the surface of the sun for a Wednesday evening Hill Run that went something like this:

Start out at Pump House, run across Nickel Bridge up hill on sidewalk to next intersection.  Cross Westover Hills BLVD, down hill to riverside drive all the way to reedy creek parking lot for a quick drink of water.  Hardywood suggests an even steeper hill by his house for the return trip which took us back to riverside drive and back across bridge to parking lot.

Great run by everyone this evening in the oppressive heat.  Hardywood ran to the AO from his and then completed the run.  That is impressive in the 95 degrees heat.  YHC is appreciative of the doubling back to make sure YHC, as YHC was getting a little overheated and had to cut back ont he pace to ensure a safe trip back.

  • Hey TYA, Did you get a Raccoon?

4 runners posted, followed by 3 Gear Heads with bikes to the wednesday evening hill run that is the Hillcrest torturous loop

    THE THANG

Run(bike) the Hillcrest loop in various designs of Jug Handles or Sans Jug Handle Loops

    Moleskin

YHC arrived mid loop with the runners in full motion. YHC had two other cyclist of the younger in age variety(Offspring of YHC) YHC first encountered Saab as was setting a furious pace up the jug handle(Chariman Road) Saab was slightly Shocked to see YHC on a bike. YHC has missed one full week of workouts due to the left knee and YHC’s own stupidity. Today was the first day without limping, so why not try biking up a serious hill, it’s only a circle.

Lockjaw finished several loops and declared that he is all in for the BRR and has not missed a run since July 1, Wait isn’t today the 6th?

TSB was cranking up the final hill just ahead of TYA. TYA looked as if he managed to include a lap across the Rivah when he arrived back at the top of the hill.

Post-Run festivus at TYA’s humble abode included several fine crafted beers, one could only describe as Grapefruit oriented( although pricing was in full debate of said beer) As the group discussed the finer points of Hover-boards, the BRR history, the TYA/Bleeder vs OBT/Dredd BRR mountain Goat battle Royale and TYA family selection of pets or rabid animals.

    Peace out,
Bleeder on TYA’s Machine. No, Bleeder using TYA’s… No, Bleeder pounding on TYA’s Keys.. Damn it… you get the idea.

  • Bambi watches Nascar

Eight F3RVA Pax met at Hillcrest to run some hills on a hot, but less humid evening.  Here is how it went down:

As LugNut had some evening plans, he got to the AO early to conquer three circuits.  The rest of the PAX had plans to circle the Hillcrest neighborhood 6 times.  Saab and Rosie cruised right along leading the PAX.  DK, HoneyDo, TYA and Swirly set the pace for the mere mortals of the group and YHC and TSB brought the PAX home across the finish line.  On the first loop, the PAX startled a group of 3 deer.  The deer must have been impressed with the PAX, as they were still in a neighbors front yard on loop 2.  It appeared they were watching the members of the PAX run past moving their heads with each PAX members as ran down they hill. YHC thought to himself that this is what it would like if deer watched Nascar(not that YHC was setting any speed records).  Great 2nd F at TYA’s office (ETs) afterward with discussion surrounding BRR, upcoming vacations, and DK educating everyone on the proper British term for a pregnant woman.

Great work by everyone this evening.  Consider posting for a Wed.evening run.  Perfect BRR training.

  • Wed Night Hill Run

5 strong posted for the Wed night hill run on Hillcrest and here is how it went down…

    Run the loop – 5 times !

TYA and Southern Bell got and early start on the hills (TYA had an evening commitment) way to go man TYA was not about to not get his run in – especially after  a long travel day – atta baby… Always a pleasure to see Southern Bell out there cruising up those hills nice and easy … Saab, Splinter, and YHC waited to see if Ailse 5 was gonna come rolling in hot right at the bell but there was no Ailse 5 to be seem so we  took off @ 5:30 and immediately broke into a sweat.

After a good strong 5 laps we had a great conversation regarding cold beer. YHC is really looking forward to an F3 Brew which will be called (Corporate) and brewed by our master brewers Lab Rat, Splinter, and Honeydo…

If you have not made yet to a Wed night hill run – come on out – it’s a good hard run and sometimes we do have beers afterwords 🙂

    See ya’ll in the gloom

  • Construction in Progress

5 posted for a Wednesday evening hill run. Weather was cool and breezy, perfect day for a run.

The Thang: 4 or 5 loops around Hillcrest.

NMM: Still a little construction going on in Hillcrest. Made for interesting paths around the route. Luckily this time there was no paving going on.

  • Hillcrest is under construction

3 stalwarts posted on a sunny Wednesday evening.

    The Thang:

Extended hillcrest loop. Run down West Hillcrest, left towards Charmian, Follow Charmian around to East Hillcrest. Back up East Hillcrest to finish the loop. Repeat x3.

    NMM:

When we arrived, the Richmond road repaving crew was already set and ready to roll. That left very little parking and space for the PAX to park. Swirly and I found enough parking and waited for any additional PAX. TSB arrived shortly after having walked up the hill from here house. She refuses to take a ride up the hill because its a two minute walk (cannot argue with her logic).

Road paving operations were underway, so we modified our route to minimize the time on East Hillcrest. It ended up being a good call as the pavement operations were both smelly and hot. Additionally the vehicles were spewing out there diesel exhaust. Made for a hard run…but we prevailed.

Next week we will find a new route so that we miss the repaving….

  • BRR run – “Spidercrawl”

9 Faithful gathered at the home of the Spiders for the first installment of the weekly BRR run training.  Here’s how it went down:

Warmup lap around the lake.  Pause halfway through for SSH’s until everyone caught up.

Mosey up the north hill to the entrance and back down to the lake for run intervals.

4 hill runs on the south side of the lake, with 30 LBC’s at the end of each interval.

Mosey back around the lake and reverse the northside hill run.  Mosey back around the lake to the south side for COT.

Total distance covered = 3.64 miles according to Bleeder’s Nike app.

    Moleskin:

YHC enjoyed leading these fine men for the first BRR weekday run.  Bleeder noted at the start that orange cones in the parking lot adjacent to the lake made parking difficult, although everyone seemed to make it OK.  In addition, the tomatoes working out on the island seemed to have no trouble finding spots in the parking lot.  Some discussion took place as to whether YHC was forceful enough giving direction today…..YHC admits to Q’ing a little looser than usual.  The intent was to focus on the running and to leave exercises in between at the discretion of each man.  YHC figures that the PAX gets enough arm and core work during the rest of the weekly F3 workouts.  If a “drill sergeant” persona is what the PAX are looking for in each Q, then we need look no further than Toga (where was he today?)  I am reminded of Full Metal Jacket whenever I participate in a Toga led workout.

YHC intended to hold the COT inside the pavilion on the island in the middle of the lake.  Conspiracy, however, seemed intimidated by the presence of the tomatoes also working out on the island, and so we continued on to the south side instead.  It was postulated that perhaps there was someone there in particular that Conspiracy did not want to interact with…….???

Next week, Sippy will Q the weekly BRR run on Tuesday at 5:30 at Dogpile.
