2.0 friendly workout at Rock & Roll

  • Ruck-N-Slide

16 HIM’s & 2.0’s assembled at Rockwood Park for a School of RUCK. The DTH Tacoma was heavy laden with extra rucks, bags, and bricks, and all warriors were loaded down before setting off into the woods. YHC found a couple nice cabers in the woods for the kids to take turns carrying. On our 1.5 mile trek we made it down to the lake and back, and there were a couple brief COP’s for squats and lunges along the way. We even attempted teaching and implementing the GrowRuck exercise of a thee-man team carrying one wounded warrior. It was challenging for the kids to grasp but we gave it a solid effort. We also had some kids loaded up on shoulders along the way for Dad’s to win a little extra 1st F. After about 45 minutes the PAX returned to the start for COT and we named our single FNG, Caleb (Ponch’s son) who loves baseball. Welcome OHTANI !!! We concluded our time with a lot of fun on the slip-n-slide and yummy watermelon. TClaps to all these victors for choosing the hard thing today. Yours AYE! ~DTH

  • The Kids Are Alright

It was a teenage takeover at latest edition of School Rock. Touchdown made his eagerly anticipated debut on the Q sheet. I witnessed the events, and was able to transfer the data into backblast format.

Gather the PAX together for F3 intros and Warm up:

    SSH’s, Imperial Walkers, LBC’s.

Mosey to hill for Exercise One: Pain Tag
One person is “IT” – if you get tagged, 10 merkins and you are also “IT”
Subsequent rounds included Squats, Side Straddle Hops, and WWII Sit-ups. Steamer and I were worn out from the prior workout and tended to be targeted early and often.

Mosey to side of the Big Parking Lot for Exercise Two:
Bears and Crabs: the F3 version of sharks and minnows. OJ was definitely dominating during these rounds. My triangle defense idea also proved fairly worthless

Mosey to the playground for a Quintuple Check; Runner goes around the playground. Other exercises included Merkins w/feet on the swing, Dips, Step Ups, and Balance Beam Dips

Low on time, so back to the flag to name the two FNG’s. Cookies and Gatorade followed.

IMHO Touchdown did a great job with this workout. Solid cadence and creative ideas. I think Pain Tag has a lot of potential for future School of Rock events, or even for the adult PAX. With all the young guns participating in workouts and leading, the future of F3RVA looks bright.

  • So much for this being easy

11 dads and 2.0s hung around after Rocknroll for what us dads were hoping was going to be an easy workout. YHC thought a game of Simon Says would be a good idea to let the kids do a little leading. Turns out they were about as tough as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (Full Metal Jacket)

We had calls of 10 burpees, then 11 burpees, and 50 SSH just to name a few.

Next we moseyed over to the baseball field where we kicked a ball around and every time the ball changed hands that PAX got to call out an exercise or to walk like an animal. Various animals such as T-rex, cheetah, snail, and possibly coming to a Florence Q near you, the flea!

I’ve been to several Schools of Rock, but this was my first time leading. Great to lead these kids, who have such bright futures, and I hope it was as much fun for them as it was a blessing for me!

  • Flamboyant Skipping, Puddle Splashing

10 rain lovin puddle jumpers assembled at Rockwood for the first 2024 School of Rock. Here’s how these champs tackled the suck:

    WARMERAMA

    • Welcome, Disclaimer
    • Variable IC reps to stretch a bit

    RUN&BEAR

    • Mosey down to the bottom of the grass hill and bear crawl back to the top

    LUNGE ALLEY

    • Indigenous peoples lunge down the paved path with last PAX doing x3 mericans then run to the front

    “FUN” WITH BRICKS

    • Bear crawling, etc
    • Sorry I can’t recall what else we did with bricks…

    TUG-O-WAR

    • Princess Peach and Oreo quickly teamed up on one end, soon to be joined by Flounder
    • Buckets and Banjo on the other end, later joined by Guppy
    • The girls won and earned x5 mericans
    • Boys did x3 burpees

    2.0 RUCK

    • DTH loaded up Banjo on shoulders & Oreo on his back
    • Heist front carried both Buckets and Guppy
    • Sable hoisted Flounder on shoulders, which made her quite tall
    • Big Rig finally convinced Princess Peach to climb aboard – she was not a fan
    • Kid Ruck around the big parking lot, with a stop to switch carriers half way around
    • Buckets and Banjo both took a turn carrying Oreo

    SKIPPING & SPLASHING

    • Follow the leader, DTH doing the most ridiculously girly skipping across the last couple parking lots, splashing in all the puddles

    BTTVSF for COT:

    • Counterama # 10
    • Namerama
    • Drinks, Oreos, and Melon

NMS:  Banjo and Oreo were already soaked and smoked from doing the men’s bootcamp but Buckets brought the big boy A-game energy, Princess Peach brought OG experience, and FNG Flounder (Sable’s daughter Isabella) was quick to break out of shyness to join the silliness that only a Pediatrician knows how to inspire. Heist’s little, re-named Guppy since we don’t recall his former nickname mostly rode the Dad train, but was finally lured into action for the boys versus girls tug-of-war. Well done to all, and thanks for giving the Henderson Clan some company embracing the suck on a drenched morning. We’ll pray for some finer weather for the June School of Rock and get an even bigger crowd! Yours AYE, DTH

NMS:  Solid mini beatdown for the kids today with a sprinkling of silly fun and a slip-n-slide to boot. Style points go to Banjo rocking out the air guitar while sliding on his knees down the slide. We’ll shoot for one more of these the first Saturday of October. Lead by example in the way you desire your child to go! Yours, DTH

  • Banjo’s Birthday Bash

15 hyped up party goers with 11 PAX dad’s and a gaggle of M’s and babies all circled up in Rockwood’s main parking lot to chase DTH around for 30 minutes, celebrate Banjo’s 5th birthday, and generally have FUN!

  • Airborne FNG school

25 RockStars including multiple FNGs made this convergence style AO half of a Fourth of July attendance. With Band of Brothers and the 101st airborne prescient there were verbose instructional introductions and brotherhood references. Nonetheless we made it through a long Warmarama. Soldiers, Merkins, ssh, shoulder taps, WW2S, and Don Qs were done and the 6-year-olds locked in on the core principles and mission statement of F3.

Following the rough start YHC tried a relay race but with 25 unawares and prickly grass modifications became necessary.

Parachute for the win. With nothing to lose we went on a parachute filled excursion with alternating exercises under the canopy. I think there’s something there but again it’s hard to organize 25 with no gaps.

Final try was with dodgeball on top with called exercises for the first losers.

YHC got the pleasure of introducing my neighbor to the group and Puff did great. Gume left the workout with no new name but we named quite a few others. What a testament to our first level of leadership commitment, in our families. DTH thanks for organizing.

  • Back to School, you Filthy Animals!

A small hoard of eager 2.0’s and exhausted Dad’s (20 total!) assembled following the Rock&Roll COT. With a handful of M’s on standby, here’s how we had some “fun”…

    The THANG:

    WARMERAMA:

    • Mosey and circle up
    • Welcome & Disclaimer
    • Variable IC Reps to get the muscles warm top to bottom

    COP #1:

    • ?WHO CAN CATCH THE Q? …mad scramble to tag YHC, then watch him terrifically wipe out in the wet grass…
    • Variable animal movements across grassy area (bear crawl, kangaroo hops, etc)

    COP #2:

    • Mosey to tennis court
    • CRABS & BEARS – like sharks and minnows but the crab walkers are in the middle truing to catch the bear crawlers as they traverse the court
    • Pro Tip – you’ll win if you just run instead of bear crawl!

    COP #3:

    • Line up for BATAAN DEATH MARCH
    • Last man does 2 burpees while the rest of the PAX lunge walks
    • BERNIE second half of the way
    • Parking line hops OYO with the Q goving a slow 20 second countdown

    COP #4:

    • With a beach ball found in the bushes, split PAX on either side of the fence for a spontaneous game of BURPEE BALL
    • Like volleyball, with a burpee completed by the team who let’s the ball touch the ground or go out of bounds

    COP #5:

    • TRIPLE CHECK:
    • P1 – Swing Pumps
    • P2 – Incline Merkins
    • P3 – Run around picnic table and back

    COT:

    • Counterama # 20 (+2 tots not quite participating yet)
    • Namerama (x5 FNG’s)
    • YHC took the PAX out in Prayer
    • WATERMELON & COOKIES on the Playground

NMS:  In the words of House Party “bro! that’s not a kid’s workout, that was a REAL workout!” Yes my friend – the name is Try Hard, remember? Haha. That was a great kick-off for the School of Rock and I expect we’ll have even more kids next time. Currently we’re scheduled for once a month at Rockwood Park but it would be GREAT if anyone wants to put on another F3 event for the kids this summer like a hike or river float – just holler and we’ll get it set up! SYITG, DTH

  • Killer Kangaroo

A couple PAX and their gaggle of 2.0’s converged for the June edition of School of Rock. After surviving the HPVQ, here’s how YHC cooled down:

    The THANG:

COP #1:  Mosey to a lush outfield and set up for a soccer scrimmage – x5 merkins earned each time a goal scored.

COP #2:  Classic Game of Tag, then Oreo introduced “Kangaroo Hunter” where everyone’s hopping around like a kangaroo except the hunter who had easy pickings (fairly realistic actually).

COP #3:  WWII’s called in cadence to the song “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes”, getting faster each round. Also a couple other IC exercises.

COP #4:  Basketball court suicides, then another round of tag, this time called “Killer Kangaroo” wherein the kangaroo was it and everyone else was bear crawling to escape the hopping tag.

Mosey BTTF for an informal COT over cold Gatorades & Granola Bars. NMS:  Fewer numbers today with some SoR regulars vacationing, but as you know “where two or more are gathered” was still a great time. Turns out when you let the kids come up with exercises, they’ve got some great (exhausting) ideas… all the more challenging when a certain (ahem Banjo) 35lb 2.0 wants to be a ruck the entire time. See ya’ll for a Boberry Q next month. ~DTH
