  • Free For All at Sunday Funday

None of us really knows how many guys showed up to do the “come as you are when you are ready” event that is Sunday Funday. According to local legend passed among the campers in the park, 2 started at 6:15, 4 started at 7, one or two started at 9, and someone went biking. For all involved, temperatures remained constant at 70 and sunny.

The 7 a.m. launch included a near millionaire, and near billionaire, a guy with a fever, a guy with 50 direct reports, and 150 bikers. Route: Bridge, dog poop, Buttermilk, Belle Isle (top loop), North Bank (note the Oxford comma), and BTT (watch out for the super fast mountain bikers!!) VSF.

    7-ish miles.

NMS: Tons discussed…Kristi Noem’s sweet heart, no-bid $150MM contract to friends, worshiping dead racists, waterfront preservation work, stains magically appearing on a very specific part of your shorts, Jamaicans being detained by ICE at 2:30 a.m. in the hospital (ok, that one involved an old lady tripping on morphine). But, never a dull moment.

Race results: Confusion reigned on the podium. UpChuck DQ’d for taking the hiker route, but managed to slide past Shakes / Offshore on the home stretch courtesy of a well-timed rendezvous with a friend of Shakes’ (note the apostrophe) on the trails. Somehow, slowest guy crossed the finish line first. Definitely not pretty…we’ll call it a draw.

    Announcements:

Kubota has the Q at First Watch, the AO with the best mumblechatter in all of F3-dom on Wednesday. That kicks off Seazn of Giving. Then, K-man has the Q for The Bridge on December 27. Clown cars forming now.

Couple of races coming up…Snowy Owl in early January, and Bel Monte in March. LG!

  • If You Can’t Do It, Don’t Q It (Just Write the Backblast)

5 guys split into 3 and 2 for a Sunday Funday loop fest. Temperatures were 70 and sunny. According to the lady showing her hip high hornet stings (true story), the following might have happened.

3 ran a loop. YHC didn’t Q this, and he has no idea what happened.

2 rucked a different loop. YHC didn’t Q this either, but is sure it happened. North through the park to Floyd, then right, then on Arthur Ashe Blvd. Then, we looped the lakes, and BTTVSF.

Numbers, names, and off to coffeeteria for an hour-long circle of trust.

    Announcements: None

NMS: Hornets are out on the trails, apparently. This includes last weekend, apparently. It’s not every Sunday that a fellow runner lifts up her shorts to show off hornet stings on the top of her hips. But, my friends, it happened. F3 can be prone to some crazy hyperbole, but this brings weird to a new level of odd. Oh, and, in case once wasn’t enough, she did it again.

  • RFK Jr. Thinks Social Security Causes Autism

8 9 8 5 of F3’s veterans formed up at the oldest continually operating F3 Sunday workout in Virginia. Temperatures were sunny and 70 and generally incredible. According to the Marathon Training Team talented runners jerkish mountain bikers good lookin’ lady running with her dog jogger who clapped for us on the loop today, the following might have happened:

5 4 guys ran North South Bank (watch fixed the hole in the bridge!) to T. Pottersfield Belle Isle Bridgeeither T. Pottersfield Bridge or Belle Isle Bridge Forest Hill Park to Buttermilk NorSouth Bank (skip oh, yeah, we did the lariat twice). About 6.5 7.7 miles, or so says YHC’s Apple Watch (feels not quite that long).

One guy plus Gloom rucked a loop.

2 1 guys rode from Elwood Thompson’s. Rumor has it…45+ to Ashland 50 miles and back. Yeah, baby. Impact.

1 guy ran 10 OYO on roads.

Numbers, names, and YHC took us out. Remember, it’s Sunday Funday, so the COT is thorough and throughout.

If you show up for coffeeteria, YHC counts you in the workout, unless the workout was go-carting last night.

NMS: exceptional morning to chat and run with Shakedown Offshore, Shakedown, Sippy Cup, and Helix. Excellent discussion with Salt Lick over coffee. Solid way to spend the morning assessing our fitness, our faith (in many things…each other, society, a higher being, the benefits of scientific learning, and the oddity of those few Christians who oppose scientific learnings), and fellowship (never a lonely or dull moment building friendships).

So, yes, F3 does have regularly scheduled Sunday workouts…always has. If that’s new, time to educate yourself (and YHC would encourage you not to take someone else’s word for it…come out and meet some men whose friendship will be new to you…Sundays, 07:00, Pump House parking lot).

Announcements (literally the same as the last 3 weeks):

Reminder: Being a HIM is about doing things for others, not yourself. Third F is not about church or religion – it’s about doing something bigger than yourself (if this sounds unfamiliar to you, make sure to read “Freed to Lead”). Help in the community. Volunteer. Put your time and effort into making other people better. Can you do that reading a book? Sure, though it’s most likely that helps you. And, let’s be honest…if something was written in Aramaic, how literal can the meaning be, unless you speak Aramaic? (Fun fact: YHC’s counsin does speak Aramaic.)

F3RVA has multiple opportunities that are 3rd F focused – doing things that are bigger than yourself. Breaking Bread brings meals to people who are struggling. Healing Place leads men and women struggling with addiction down a path to better health through exercise (sound familiar?). The Bridge helps men fighting the habit of committing low level crimes by giving them structure, role models, a profession, and hope.

Each of us has limited time to give. With all the challenges of being a man in your 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, etc., what can you offer to others that is designed to put that person in a better place?

Doing the same Backblast 2 3 4 5 weeks in a row is super efficient. This is the way to do it.

Home grown half marathon, quarter marathon, ruck-tastic mile or two, or just a few blocks. Get out there and get some exercise. See Don Draper for details. 2.0, Ms, and friends all welcome.

  • The Corporate Challenge – 2016 vs. 2025

Ten runners posted on Sunday at the Pump House for preseason training to prepare for the fall when temperatures and humidity should feel drastically different.

    The Route

Most runners did the Buttermilk to North Bank loop for somewhere close to 7 miles. They forgot to do weigh-ins before and after the run.

COT: Numberarama, Name-O-Rama, Announcements, Helix took us out.

    NMS

Back in 2016 when YHC first posted with F3 RVA, the Corporate Challenge had been established. The Corporate Challenge was to post at the following locations in one week:

    • Monday – Punisher
    • Tuesday – No Toll
    • Wednesday – Source of Truth
    • Thursday – 45 Minutes of Mary
    • Friday – RAMM
    • Saturday – Dogpile (6 AM), then get head out to Gridiron (7AM)
    • Sunday – Sunday Funday

Travelling is what made the Corporate Challenge challenging. By the time that YHC started F3, Spider Run, DaVille, Circus Maximus, and WDog had started meaning there were now multiple options on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to post everyday. Within a few years, other workouts had started. Now, less travel was needed to complete the Corporate Challenge.

Fast forward to today, there are as many as 8 workouts per day in F3 RVA and three 7 AM bootcamps on Saturday. This potentially makes it much easier to complete Corporate Challenge.

Can the Corporate Challenge still exist today with so many options of workouts and little travel required to complete it? YHC asks this because he did the following this week.

    • Monday – DaVille (3 miles from YHC’s house)
    • Tuesday – Raider Run (3 miles from YHC’s house)
    • Wednesday- Manndate (1.5 miles from YHC’s house)
    • Thursday – Tomato Run (3 miles from YHC’s house)
    • Friday – The Creek (1.5 miles from YHC’s house)
    • Saturday – Dogpile (6 AM), then DaPile which ordinarily starts at 6:30 AM but started at 7 AM on 7/26 due to a Puppy DaPile workout. (DaPIle is 3 miles from YHC’s house.)
    • Sunday – Sunday Funday

Does almost an entire Nano-Region Corporate Challenge meet the requirements? Is it completed as long as the following are met?

    1. Post 7 straight day
    2. Post at Dogpile then head to another AO for a 7 AM bootcamp.
    3. Post at Sunday Funday either to start or finish the week.

    Announcements

    • Interested in running the Richmond Marathon? See Gecko. After much discussion during the COT, we believe the date of the marathon is close to November 12.
    • Homegrown Half/10K – August 16 at 7 AM at Robious Landing.
    • Breaking Bread – Sign up for August

YHC really enjoyed his annual journey to Sunday Funday today. It was great meeting and running with Gecko and Big Wheel. You guys had already run 4 miles before YHC got out of the car. Well done Gentlemen! Much respect today as well today with 7 of the 10 PAX members in their 50s.

    Gotta Run!

  • The List is on My Desk

A healthy six pack of dedicated runners sauntered forth in the sweltering humidity to take on the latest revelations made available during Sunday Funday. Conditions remained sunny and 70. According to the Jeffrey Epstein files not yet released, the following might have happened:

North Bank, Belle Isle, some did the Belle Isle loop, all did Buttermilk. Anthrax did all of most of this, albeit backwards and likely at least twice.

Gecko also did some pre-game and post-game running OHO.

    Numbers-ish, names-ish, and we done.

NMS: Condolences continue to roll in for Sally, Offshore’s dog, on her untimely and unexpected passing…for those not in the know, Sally was a regular at Sunday Funday.

    UPC spits the bit.

  • Assistant Regional Manager or Assistant to the Regional Manager?

Three studs awoke to steamy conditions ready to examine the age-old question, “What’s my title?” Temperatures were 70 and sunny. According to the guy going out for a THIRD round this morning (21 miles!), the following might have happened:

Route: South bank, Buttermilk, Forest Hill, reverso, and back to the virtual shovel flag. 7 miles. In today’s temperatures / conditions, this was like running 7 miles in a simmering soup.

Numbers, names, and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

Prayers for PAX members and their families, Breaking Bread, and Whitesnake leading The Bridge on July 19. Happy Father’s Day.

NMS: Offshore is now officially the Assistant to the Traveling Secretary or the Assistant to the Regional Manager or the Associate Dean to the President. Or, something. Discussion today rotated among hockey playoffs, promotions, and crazy people trying to tear down institutions.
