  • Chap’s VQ: The Hill is Your Friend

6 intrepid F3 veterans braved the mean streets of Bon Air for the latest edition of The Forge. The mood could be described as jovial, as the PAX eagerly anticipated an epic beat down – Chaplain Style!

The Pax trecked to the end of the main road and circled up for COP. YHC fumbled through the intro and was possibly a bit off on the cadence; however, we all made it through the following:

Side Straddle Hops, Don Quixote’s, Arm Circles, LBC’s, Russian Soldiers (approximately 10 a piece)

Mosey to the bottom of the big hill, stopping at every light and completing 5 incline merkins on the curb

    Exercise 1: Partner up
One partner runs up the big hill to our primary parking area and back. In the interim, the other partner completes 20 squats, 20 flutter kicks, and 5 “reach out Merkins,” which apparently are not a thing! Moves are repeated until the runner returns.

Repeat until everyone has done the hill 3x.

DTH gave us a 10 count, then mosey to the next station.

    Exercise 2: Knollercoaster

    Bear Crawl up each hill
10 jump squats at the summit
    Crabwalk down the hill
10 WWII sit-ups at the bottom
    return to start with same.

    Exercise 3: Mount Chaplin
Beginning at the bottom of Mt. Chaplin, run up each hill
At the first tiered parking area: complete 2 burpees, 10 mountain climbers
2nd parking area: 3 burpees, 10 mountain climbers
    3rd: 4 burpees, 10 mountain climbers
    4th: 5 burpees, 10 mountain climbers.

Turn around at the summit and repeat the pattern on descent, starting with 2 burpees, 10 mountain climbers, and working your way up.

Goal was to complete three trips up the mountain, but time constraints only allowed for 2 and change.

Mosey back to the flag .

    Camping trip this weekend
Iron Pax at Twin Team tomorrow
Convergence at Dog Pile on Saturday
Got another VQ on Saturday (did not catch the location)
Fresh Prince took us out in prayer

It was a great honor the lead the group today! I have to admit, was a bit nervous coming in: will the Q be hard enough? will I forget all the exercises? will everything I have planned take 10 minutes? Definitely helped that my son and I did some recon the night before. In the end, everything worked out, and it was memorable experience for YHC. The hills are such an obvious and great metaphor for life: lots of peaks and valleys, but you have to power through. Definitely helps to have the support and encouragement of this group.

    • Announcerama (see Comments)
    • YHC took us out in Prayer

    NMS:

    • Lower numbers than usual due to new school year obligations and some injuries…but what a fine time we few enjoyed today. With such small numbers and high quality of manliness, YHC briefly considered taking back on the Merkin challenge… but already had other plans. We’ll cross that 860 board bridge another day. Keep headlocking your friends, coworkers and neighbors!
  • The Q has full autonomy

The Forge (and the Q) brought a smaller group out this morning, but who showed were six men that absolutely crushed it!

COP: Helicopters, DQ’s, Russian Soldiers, Cooper Head Squats, Merkins, American Hammers, Hillbillies.

Thang: stay in circle for a Deconstructive Burpee routine. 10 squats, down to plank for 10 leg kicks, 10 Merkins, 10 more leg kicks, back up to a jump clap and that completes 1. Repeat for a 9 count and on down to 1.

Mosey to Amphitheater- 11’s with a twist. At the bottom step, perform 1 dip, turn around to perform 1 incline Merkin. Box jump to the top and perform 10 Jump Squats. Run the length of sidewalk and take steps going back down to start area. 2 and 9, and so on.

6 minutes left, partner back up for 3 rounds of 15 each PLT’s and Dying, Boxing Cockroach’s. Back to the Flag!

COT: Namerama, numberama, YHC took us out.

Announcements: Poker night at DTH’s. Text if you can make it and he will send address. Even if you can’t make it, might be good to get the address, since Halloween is approaching…haha. Prayers for those affected by Dorian, Prayers for our F3 brothers and their families.

Great work this morning! It was really humid and tough to manage, but you guys rolled with it! As usual, Fresh Prince crushed the 11’s and made it seem as if he jumped every other step in the box jumps! Also, as usual, YHC had a couple of snags with proper terms and finishing on time, but as DTH so eloquently put it, the Q is in charge!

I’m having to post this by phone, so apologies if I missed something or doesn’t look right.

    Have a great day, Gents!

  • Not a ‘merkin challenge

Extensive mublechatter about a ‘merkin challenge and regaining some sort of tassel but YHC had other plans. As the clock struck 5:30 we moseyed – it was not 70 or sunny.

    • “Nails” took us out in Prayer

    NMS:

    • Comparatively cool morning after recent weeks stifling humidity. Mumble chatter ended quickly with the Bearpee Slaughter Start. Continued the burpee theme with Body Builders in the first COP and 4×4’s at the Amphitheater — DTH was feelin wiped at the end. Mr Roper was noted to comment his ears were sweating. Long Pole brought his father out, FNG “Nails”, so named since his nickname at the Fire department is the Hammer. WELCOME NAILS!!! As always, YHC is honored to lead and serve you men – keep headlocking new guys and trying out new AO’s!

  • Scrooge is Legal

9 mostly young warriors headed out to the gloom of Huguenot High to get a good beatdown. And in honor of Scrooge’s special birthday, we embarked on a 21 themed workout. I was initially disappointed to not see Scrooge at the COP. But right after I made a comment about it, he showed up 30 seconds later:)

COP – Run to bottom parking lot, 21 SSH, 21 Freddy Mercuries, 7 Don Quixotes, 7 Helicopters and 7 arm circles

First Exercise: Four corners with 21 heels to heaven, 21 hand release merkins, 21 2 count mountain climbers and 21 WWIIs; mosey to next parking lot

Second Exercise: Four corners again with burpees, one at the first corner, 3 at the second, 7 at the third and 21 at the last corner (32 burpees in total); mosey to amphitheater (with long pole giving me directions)

Third Exercise: 21s in combination of tricep dips and box jumps. Start with 20 tricep dips and 1 box jump, decrease 3 dips by step, increase 3 box jumps by step. I noticed that I even at 6’1 had more trouble with the jumps than the more vertically challenged guys.

Fourth Exercise: Triple check with wall sits, Carolina dry docks and runs around 2 different medians (Figure 8). The Figure 8 run took more time than I thought making the dry docks quite a challenge.

Last Exercise: 2 sets of 21 PLTs each

    Closed in prayer.

I enjoyed my first SOJ Q. I do feel older with this group but that is all good. I noticed that Fresh Prince is super fast and I am not. I was thinking about making Scrooge drink but while it may be 12 o’clock somewhere, 6:15 in the morning is pushing it.

Prayers go out to Helix’s daughter, Wojo for his sister, and Orange Crush for his son. Hope they all recover completely.

  • Merkin CIVIL WAR

Whistling dixie, YHC gathered 12 studly southern gentlemen around Old Glory to enlighten them of the coming battle. A nation divided against itself can not stand, so terms were set yesterday following WDog that North and South would compete in plank position – the most merkins in 45min wins the day. The SOJ Rebels to be led by DTH while the Yankee Aggressors at 45MOM would follow the flamboyant banner of Hardywood. Here follows the true accounting of how a few good Southern gentlemen gave life and limb for the honorable cause of claiming merkin victory…

    The BATTLE:

Start with x30 standard Merkins OYO

    Mosey to COP #1:

    • Run down Love Hill completing x10 Merkins at each light post, ending up at the culdesac (x140 merkins total) – arm circles for the SIX
    • SSH x15 IC
    • x5 Werkins IC (x10M)
    • DQ’s x5 IC
    • x5 Ranger Merkins IC (x10M)
    • Cherry Pickers x5 IC
    • x5 Diamond Merkins IC (x10M)
    • DR W’s x10 IC
    • x10 Merkins OYO

    Mosey to COP #2:

    • Run back up to the Shovel Flag completing x5 Merkins at every light pole (x70 merkins total) – arm circles for the SIX

Mosey toward the other side of the AO, stopping twice to complete x10 Merkins

COP #3 at the Soccer Field:

    • Modified Merkin Beast — Start with x6 Merkins at each quarter of the field 25/50/75/75/50/25 (x36 per round), then for consecutive rounds add 2nd exercise following the initial x5 merkins:
    • Round 2: x6 M, x6 SSH

    • Round 4: x6 M, x6 2-ct Flutters
    • Round 5: x6 M, x6 Squats
    • Round 6: x6 M, x6 LBC’s
    • Beast Merkin Total = 216

Mosey to Amphitheater for COP #4:

    • Complete x5 Incline Merkins on each step going up, box jump up each step between merkins (x25 Merkins)

    Mosey the long way BTTF:

    • Going around back loop, stop at each light pole to complete x10 Merkins, audibled after x4 light poles to complete x5 merkins each consecutive pole
    • From end of AO on side walk, mosey BTTF stopping every 30 yards to complete x10 merkins (at one point x9 merkins completed to even up the numbers)
    • Lunge the last 50 yards to flag, completing x10 Merkins every x10 steps …ran out of time right after completing x660 merkins total!!!!

    COT:

    • Counterama #12
    • Namerama (all vets)
    • Announcerama (see Comments)
    • FRESH PRINCE took us out in Prayer

    NMS:

    • VICTORY! VICTORY! VICTORY! The North has waved the white flag of surrender having completed an impressive, yet insufficient, 586 merkins in 45 minutes. The FORGE men stand victorious, with arms held limply at their sides, having won the day with 660 merkins in 45 minutes. THIS is what F3, in all its CSAUP glory, is all about!!!  DTH extends the invitation to any other AO that wishes to try their metal against the FORGE men, for a head to head 45 minute competition of their choosing. Or at the very least, attempt to complete more than 660 merkins in 45 minutes, and claim the F3RVA MOST MERKINS banner that the DTH Forge Flag will now be boasting. SYITG! ~DTH

See DTHs preblast for poker night this Saturday

    NMS:

Numbers at the Forge this morning were lighter than usual. Did DTH take many of the regulars over to 45MOM? The Forge Q spot was still empty yesterday afternoon and so YHC threw in a hot potato. …YHC enjoys a good hot potato Q.

One does not see Mr. Roper’s name on the Q sheet (ever) so YHC was curious to see what he would throw at us. Well, Mr. Roper brought it strong with the 4/5 corners ladder and abs focused Mary. Not sure if he’ll actually read this BB, but YHC volunteers to write up the BB for him in the future if he’ll actually put his name on the Q sheet.

Hot potatoes are also great to entice those that have never Q’d before to sign up. After getting a taste, YHC hopes Scrooge and Sea Doo will have their VQ’s soon.

Nice to have Fireman Ed SOJ this morning!

Make today a great one fellas…peace out!

    NMS:

    • Beautifully cool dark morning to stand among real men and get the day started right. YHC was impressed with the fact that Mr Roper & Shakedown maintained Mumble Chatter for the entirely of the Knollercoaster. YHC was not so impressed that none of the PAX kept the count going during the 8-ct Burpees …extra Burpees were rewarded. Some commentary was made that YHC’s routines rarely leave the PAX a moment of rest – which will be taken as a complement, thank you very much! YHC enjoyed partnering up with Fresh Prince and Handshake. Solid work fellas! And it turns out that shooting “Rock” every single time will get you into the final rounds, but not enough to beat out the wiley ways of Last Call & HoneyDo. Strong win boys. Keep posting fellas, and keep headlocking those sad clowns you just KNOW need F3. SYITG!
  • Two burpees…no problem!

Puppy pile next weekend (July 27) at 7:05 at Dogpile

Labrat has the Q for Dogpile this Saturday. He claims it’s going to be laid back. If you haven’t Q’d before and are looking for some cadence action, let Labrat know.

Early risers this Saturday at 4am.

Sugar Sock’s 40th birthday party tomorrow evening 6-10 at Ardent.

    Continued prayers for Helix’s daughter.

    Prayers for Exit Row.

    Flange took us out.

    NMS:

YHC arrived a little early this morning to count some lightpoles and was glad to see EF and Flatline already chatting it up. Flatline recently completed a move to Bon Air and did not have the best experience with his movers. It’s a good story…you should ask him about it.

5:30 arrives with Flange running in and two others coming in hot. Labrat commented something along the lines that SOJ time must work differently than everywhere else.

The lightpole ladder was a crowd pleaser. Starting out with just 2 little innocent burpees, what harm could possibly follow? But Flange (in true Flange fashion) destroyed the ladder with Posh, Flatline, and Fresh Prince right on his heels. As always, the whole PAX persevered. With 10 minutes left, YHC at least wanted to get Love Hill started, but wasn’t sure if finishing was in order…it wasn’t.

Great to have some summer tourists out this morning and to see some faces YHC hasn’t seen in a while.

Nice work today fellas…y’all crushed it! As always, thanks for letting YHC lead.

    Peace out!
