  • HB#14: All Hail Heavy Bells!

Six iron wielding luge riders braved subzero temps and breakneck ice to start the week off with a nod to Rod. Bottom line: Everest has nothing on Mt Chaplain. Here’s banana shenanigans for ya:

    The THANG:

    WARMERAMA:

    • Mosey lap WITH bells and circle up
    • Welcome & Disclaimer
    • PLAY “Heavy Bells” by RVA’s own J.Roddy Walston and the Business (3:53). For the duration of the song the PAX squat to the beat with KB racked in front, then complete a KB burpee for every “Heavy Bells” (x24) throughout the song. Super warm.

    COP #1:

    • Mosey over to Love Hill for TURKISH LIGHT POLES
    • At each light complete a T.Getup, but once the KB is overhead, mosey/walk to the next light to complete the TG going to the ground, and then start the next TG with other hand to get the KB back overhead, to then carry agin overhead to next light, etc
    • Down to bottom of Love Hill, freak out the skid-steer driver, and back up to the top

    COP #2:

    • Pull off Love Hill onto a lovely patch of ice and plank it up in line for THE FROZEN TUNNEL OF LOVE. Last PAX belly slides with his KB to the front to plank.
    • x2 Rounds completed

    COP #3:

    • Mosey around to mid-way slope of Mt Chaplain for the PAX to penguin slide down the slope. (while most KB’s survived the journey, Snip’s Trans-KB shattered the plastic handle after a beautiful launch over pavement. Good thing LWoods came prepared with a 2nd KB)
    • PAX were then directed to use their KB’s to ICE-CLIMB MT CHAPLAIN – slam the KB ahead of you through the ice to create a purchase for hand/foot, and ascend the sheer ice face to the top. Phew!
    • Lawnmower Pulls for the SIX

    COP #4:

    • Mosey BTTTaco for a few rounds of PASS THE KB
    • Standing, Side lift to Overhead press, then pass, x10 IC then repeato other direction
    • Seated, Side lift to WWII Press, then pass, x10 IC then repeato other direction
    • Plank, Pull Through pass, x10 IC then repeato other direction

    GRAND FINALE:

    • Using KB as ice-breaker and anchor, PAX ascended topmost knoll of Mt Chaplain, which is quite steep and required great intestinal fortitude to achieve the summit, which all PAX (eventually) did!
    • KB and Belly slide to bottom. FUN!

NMS:  Is it possible to get a great workout while keeping everyone safe on lethal ice AND have a ton of fun doing new stuff?!? YES. This was another one for the all-time favorite F3 memory bank. And if you haven’t started your week with the image seared into your mind of a starkly nude Snuff, hard and white as African ivory, timing his perfect-form pullups for his M to walk in on him… well you just ain’t livin! The NOS sauce is getting good, REALLY good. Keep posting gents. Yours AYE! ~DTH

NMS:  Solid numbers out for a surprise jaunt around the neighborhood with coupons. Mumble chatter was strong, most of us overdressed for what turned out to be almost balmy 40 degrees compared to other mornings in the 20’s. Belay and Machismo got in some extra credit miles beforehand and Snuff served up some delicious coffee after while regaling us of his nighttime waffle hunting escapades. You had the be there… Pullups on the mobile bar were accomplished and another fine day at (near) The Forge was fully honored. Thank you permitting me the honor to lead gentlemen. Yours AYE! ~DTH

  • Creek Hopping & Hill Crawling

11 gloom studs tackled an off-trail adventure this morning that was perfectly suited for our favorite boy scout Doner Kebab, but perhaps the joke about ruck pull-ups thwarted his attendance. The all new 2.7 mile route (see pic on Slack) redefined the “outer loop” of Larus Park and started with a tiny jaunt trespassing around the Sabot School grounds, then back onto the North end of the park trail system, and then followed along Chippenham with quite a few steep decents, creek crossings, and incline bear crawls up steep leafy slopes. Akin to a gaggle of boy scouts on their first woods adventure, the PAX were in high spirits to conquer these little challenges, and in honor of our Credo dutifully completed squats (or other reps) for the SIX on many an occasion. TClaps to Sable and Doublemint bringing in the SIX. Been a LONG time since we enjoyed Doublemint’s fine company, and was also great to have his 2.0 Spinal Tap with us before he heads back to Colorado State this weekend. The PAX completed the Larus loop via off-trail woods between a couple houses and a small development, regrouped at Sneeds Nursery, then a final jaunt on trail back through to Trader Joes. COT included prayer for LWoods paralegal who lost her father yesterday, and for YHC’s church friend battling depression/suicide. Dealer and YHC decided ruck-wearing pull-ups would be a solid CSAUP challenge, and Snip, Sable, Bromance and L Woods joined the pull-up fun. YHC proudly completed two chin-ups carrying 40 pounds, but foresees great gains with a full year of pull-up strength training. The mobile pull-up station attached to YHC’s truck now proudly sports the numbers 1-26 on one 2×4 and 27-52 on the other, with those PAX completing the 2026 pull-up challenge able to sign the boards next to each week/number they complete. You versus you. GET SOME, AYE!!! Yours, DTH

  • Phone Time!

10 HIM’s arrived to the sound of Reacher’s chainsaw preparing the implements of woe, and this PAX put in some serious “Phone Time,” which Reacher tells us is what his drill instructors called BUDS-style telephone pole PT. Here how DTH & Reacher welcomed the FNG “Romeo” and delivered the PAX a healthy dose of sanctifying pain:

    • Namerama – welcome ROMEO!
    • Announcerama (see Below)
    • BOM Prayer

NMS:  Solid larger PAX tonight for a combo-Q courtesy of YHC and Reacher. We had all thought he was joking about bringing some “toys” for his part of the Q – we now all have a very different level of expectation with Reacher, and a very new definition of “toys.” The PAX will be glad to hear we decided after the workout to chainsaw that behemoth 10’ pole into two 5’ pole segments. Reacher invited any/all Crossing Q’s to feel welcome to use the pile of poles anytime. Yaaay. A big warm welcome to William Sutton who attends our church and has been riding the fence about attending F3 for quite some time, but he is ALL about coming back! Nickname came from his name William —> Shakespeare —> Romeo. Super solid dude and great addition to our PAX! Also great to see Slider back out after a long hiatus – welcome back brother. • ?what does the oreo say in German? NINE!

A grand 11 HIM’s RSVP’d “Hell Yeah!” to Oreo’s 9th Birthday Bash, which coincidentally also celebrates NTB’s 9th wedding anniversary. By the minimalist attire of ROSIE temps were 70 and Sunny (as always), but LWOODS’ impersonation of Randy from the Christmas Story movie (stuck in puffy snowsuit) suggested true temps may have been in the 20’s. Here’s how we celebrated YHC’s firstborn:

A handsome 8-PAX rolled into a balmy 50’s and breezy Huge Bells to follow a sleeveless Q into the gloom rockin out the top songs from 30 years ago. Key Takeaways:  Dealer likes to hold small things to make his hands look bigger. Machinehead’s side hustle is a messenger angel. Blank Space admiringly noted he’s never been to an AO with both hot coffee and music to follow. Snuff can’t be beat at KB rep speed. And here’s the meat of the story:

    The THANG:

    WARMERAMA:

    • Breathless run around the knollercoaster
    • Circle up an put on the music – top hits from 30 years ago (1985)
    • Welcome & Disclaimer
    • Warm-up Reps – a few IC without KB’s, then not IC but with the KB’s – completely randomly made up by YHC on the fly

    LIGHTPOLE ALLEY:

    • Mosey down to the Culdesac stopping at each of 12 lights to complete reps. Alternate every other light doing x5 reps of Side Swings (ea side) and x5 reps of Racked Side Lunge (ea side).

    CULDESAC RING OF FIRE:

    • Circle up for variable KB reps called by each successive PAX around circle
    • Long mosey back to the base of Love Hill

    LOVE HILL C.M.I.Y.C:

    • Partner up, each partner completes each round exercise before moving to next round
    • Round 1 – P1 walks backwards up hill holding KB overhead while P2 completes x10 KB swings then runs to catch up and switch
    • Round 2 – P1 lunges up hill with KB racked in front while P2 completes x10 WWII Sit&Press then runs to catch up and switch
    • Round 3 – P1 bear crawl drags KB up hill while P2 completes x10 Squat Thrusters

    25’s:

    • Stop at each lightpole to complete x25 reps, first to 25 calls it quits for all – basically Snuff finished first every time…

NMS:  Awesome group this morning for a very unseasonably warm workout. YHC was gonna play the top hits from 2025, but was so disgusted by the playlist we went back 30 years instead – ended up reminiscing about an hilarious movie from 2012 “Rock of Ages” – gotta see it. PAX got a decent swolt by the end of lightpole alley, and the other COP’s were a decent challenge as well. Snuff takes home the prize for finishing first on all the 25’s – just grateful we didn’t do 25 KB Burpees! Dealer’s lumberjack hands look massive holding the tiniest Yeti coffee mug you’ve ever seen. Bring your kids to New Years Convergence – maybe we’ll set up a 2.0 fight club after. Yours AYE! ~DTH

NMS:  MERRY CHRISTMAS F3 RVA! YHC is truly thankful to these fine few brothers who broke from festive fartsack tradition to start the day right. This was also YHC’s first F3 workout on a Christmas morning, and as a gift to myself, we just repeated the musical beatdown YHC gave the NoToll PAX on last year’s Christmas Eve. Might just have to become another F3 holiday tradition! Just like last year the PAX movement produced a lovely wrapped Christmas gift (see picture on Slack) but this year was a lot more hills. These fine brothers also went home laden with delicious cold smoked venison loin for their holiday charcuterie boards or frying pans. Keeping the Christ in Christmas, YHC closed the morning with a bit of a testimony during COT. Bottom line, Jesus is my Lord and Savior and He works through me every day to love and serve others, and it is a supernatural exchange wherein He gives me incomparable peace and joy in exchange for my obedience. My prayer is each of you finds the same miraculous life transformation and eternal purpose in turning your lives over to Jesus. Yours AYE! ~DTH
