  • May-Day, May-Day…Man Down

13 men met this morning at Grid Iron, pre summer heat. Some may have wished they stayed home?

After a brief warm up we headed to the fields for some cardio with “Thunder-Burpee”…burpees for every time ACDC’s Thunderstruck said “Thunder”. Unfortunately after one burpee we lost Polly.

Then it was time for core. After sets of 20 of Freddy Mercury’s, Mercury Freddy’s, Crunchy Frog we Bear Crawled our way for another set of 20 of Reverse Crunches, Heals to Heaven, and WWII’s with a twist…and then Bear Crawled for another set of 20 V-Up Roll Ups…followed by Bear Crawl and 20 Side Crunches and Ukrainian Hammers. Gomer injured his shoulder but fought on. Finished core with some 7’s of Get-Ups and Merkins. Lost PigSkin to some unknown injury (get better, my friend).

Time for shoulders with Jacob’s Ladder of Carolina Dry Docks and Air Presses. Then time for legs with a Triple-Check of Squats, Lunges, and Runs. Had to work arms so we did 7’s of Pull Ups and Dips.

Finally ended with a Ring of Fire. It was a good morning with these fine men…and then we got to meet up with our fallen brother, Pinto, for coffee!

  • Grid Iron is never easy

10 posted for a beautiful morning. Handshake and Probation joined us to bring down the average age about a decade. Somebody made a great observation…for the old guys AO, Grid Iron is never easy. 🙂

Warm up, followed by a jaunt to Burpee Hill for only 20 burpees (Q was tempted to start with 10 mins of burpees). Mosey to field where a new exercise was introduced (Bear Crawl 1-2-3) with 100 Merkins, 200 WW IIs and 300 Squats…with Bear Crawls in between. Gave the arms and legs a break with a modified Ab-Beast of WW IIs, Heels to Heaven, Crunchy Frog, Side Crunches, and American (renamed Ukrainian) Hammers. 10 count and off to jogging the 100 yard field, with 10 yard steps of burpees (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 5, 4, 3, 2, 1). End of the field we did 3 sets of 10 Big Boy Sit-up-Ups, jog to the top of the hill for 10 Merkins. Another 10 count and time to jog back, but pause for 10 burpees at midfield. Wrapped up play time on the field with 25 two count Ukrainian (F-Putin) Hammers. Stretched, mosey back, and ended with 20 Merkins.

  • CarFax

Strong showing at Heartbreak Ridge and we may have deadlocked a FNG (CarFax) in to joining going forward.

After a mosey (as I was told a fairly quick mosey) to warmup, we headed to the upper parking lot for some leg workouts( Dora of 100 Lunges, 200 Calf Raises, and 300 Squats). Then a mosey to the bottom of the hill for a chest workout (and definitely Homer’s favorite), Clockwork Merkins. Mosey to lower field and exercise equipment for a modified arm workout (Triple Check of 30 dips, Jerkins, Pull-ups). Mosey to the big field where we met a FNG (CarFax) working out by himself. So we brought him along for a modified Ab Ripper X (25 each of Crunchy Frogs, In and Outs, Bicycles/Reverse Bicycles) then a Bear Crawl 25 yards for (25 of Heels to Heaven, and V-up Roll Ups), followed by a Bear Crawl of 25 yards for WW II’s and American Hammers. The Pax seemed like they had more energy so we went for 3 runs up Heartbreak Ridge. It was a good morning!

  • 50-50

YHC forgot to cancel last week for his 50th Bday Q and the Pax had to improvise with a hot potato. My bad. But this week, we had all sorts of fun with plenty of 50 counts. 13 of us posted and we even had an appearance from Water Wing for 1 exercise during warm ups.

After warmup we went to Burpee Hill for 10 burpees, followed by a mosey to the soccer field for another set of 10 burpees. We then worked on legs with a Dora of 100 lunges, 200 squats, 300 heel raises. Next up was a modified Ab-Ripper X25 Crunchy Frogs, 25 Bicycles forward and back, 25 In and Outs…Bear Crawl to the 18 yrd line for 25 Heels to Heaven, 25 Reverse Crunches, and 25 Flutters…Crab Walk to 50 yrd line for 25 V-up Roll ups, 25 Side Crunches (each side) and 20 Leg Climbs. Having worked legs and abs, it was time for a Clockwork Merkin on the hill. Then a Jack Web of 1 Carolina Dry Docks for every 5 Air Presses. Of course we did 10 sets (it’s a 50 theme). Did another 10 burpees before heading to the exercise bars for a Quadruple Check (Pull-ups, Dips, and Jerkins while the 4th group did 5 burpees). If the math was correct, that’s 20 burpees…for a total of 50 for the day.

Took a mosey back to parking lot to finish off with what else, but 50 American Hammers.

  • Mini-convergence at GridIron?

The Spring weather brought out a whopping 18 men (1 of whom was a FNG) this morning and many questioned if we were having a convergence. After a brief warm-up we moseyed over to Burpee Hill for, you guessed it, our first exercise 10 mins of burpees. Fortunately the Pax didn’t revolt so we moseyed to chin-up bars for a modified 11’s of pull-ups and step-ups (just did odd numbers after that first exercise of 10 mins of burpees).

Striker Park’s soft, comfortable, dry, turf field was in use so we moseyed to the wet, muddy, smelly Grid Iron for an all ab workout delivered in the format of a Beast (36 WW II’s, 36 LBCs, 36 Heels to Heaven, 36 Flutter Kicks, 36 Side Crunches, and 36 American Hammers. Finished off with a Triple Check (Balls to the Wall, more WW II’s, and a mosey around the loop). As we circled up before numberama, we were able to squeeze in just a handful more burpees because…why not?

Great day with the Pax. Good to see long lost brothers like Feather, who posted after a year plus, and brought out FNG (Nathan Jr).

  • GridIron Hot Potato

Another beautiful Fall morning at Grid Iron, but time for something different…Hot Potato. This happens when YHQ forgets he signed up months in advance for the Q on back to back weekends. Fortunately we had a group of 10 men who all contributed as Q.

So, after a warm up in the parking lot we headed to the comfy soccer field for a modified Beast including Burpees, Merkins, WW IIs, and more with Pinto, Blue Moon, and Bi Product taking the lead. Attila completed our time on the soccer field by leading a modified triple check.

FireMan Ed then took the Hot Potato and led us to the exercise bars for a Round of 11’s (Pull Ups and Dips). Chum Bucket then took charge with Carolina Dry Docks…4 rounds of 25, and threw the Hot Potato to White Deer for 3 rounds of Leg Lifts at 6″, 45 degrees, and Heels to Heaven.

J’ville took us home with repeated Crab Walks, followed by a Ring of Fire.

Good team work by all who contributed as the Q.

  • Grid Iron Ad Lib

Beautiful fall day for a workout and fortunately a great group of men posted that morning. Even had a FNG, (thanks to Hand Shake for recruiting Mittens).

Began with a warm up in the parking lot and then 11’s at the pull up bars (Pull up and Dips). Short mosey to the soccer field for an ab workout of 4 Corners (5 Heels to Heaven, 10 LBCs, 15 Flutters, and 20 WWIIs), followed by a round with an incremental 5 of each. Was thinking a third round, but after our recent Convergence at Grid Iron…we didn’t need more abs.

On the mosey to the football field the Q called an audible (it’s what happens when you get old and your body tells you to stop), and decided not to do Attila’s favorite, The Beast. Went to picnic tables for 3 rounds of 20 Abyss Merkins and Step-Ups and then to the playground for a Ring of Fire, and American Hammers (after all, it was recently Sept 11th). Then a mosey to the building for 3 rounds of 20 Donkey Kicks and Chicken Peckers. Ended with some stretching.

Happy to welcome Mittens to F3 (snow gloves to an F3 workout in Sept gets you that name).

  • 2020 workout

Having just dropped off my son at college, I thought today’s workout would be a tip of the hat to the graduating class of 2020…with you guessed it, lots of 20 counts. Also good to see a member of the high school class of 2020 joining us this morning (Cheetah).

After a warm up in the parking lot of plenty of 20 counts (Side-Straddle Hops, Arm Circles, Reverso, Merkins, and Suzanne Somers, ABD, we moseyed to the grassy knoll for 10 Burpees. Lighthouse astutely noticed it wasn’t 20, but fear not, we go the extra 10 in later, with plenty more to come. 😉 A mosey to the turf field allowed us a break to finish the other 10 Burpees and then two rounds of 4 Corners with 5 WW IIs, 10 Reverse Sit-ups, 15 Flutters, and 20 two-count American Hammers. Moseyed back to the exercise set for two sets of 10 pull-ups and 10 Merkins (yep, that’s another 20). Then 20 Dips and 20 Squats, followed by 20 Copperhead squats and 20 Step-ups.

Relocated to the building next to the Grid Iron for 20 Donkey Kicks and 20 Chicken Peckers. Eased our way on to the Grid Iron for a set of 20 pace Bear Crawls and 20 Crawl Bears, followed by Karaoke across the field twice, 20 WW II’s, and 20 Bench Kicks. Moseyed to the comfortable padded playground for a Ring of Fire, Stretching, and of course to end the morning…20 Burpees.

  • Captain America (Grid Iron)

Apologies for the delay, but posting Grid Iron’s July 4th Q. A patriotic group of: J’ville, Chum, Blue Moon, Biproduct, Pinto, Fireman Ed, Lighthouse, and Atilla joined me this fine morning.

After getting our hear rate up with some basic stretches in the parking lot we headed to the hill for 10 Burpies, followed by a mosey to a more comfortable turf field while on our six for a 15 minute Ab workout (25 In and Outs, 25 Bicycles forward and then backward, 25 Crunchy Frogs…bear crawl to the next station for 25 Heels to Heaven, 25 straight leg sit ups…karaokoe to the next spot for 25 V-up Rollups and 25 hip rock and raise…bear crawl to the next spot for 50 American Hammers.

Mosey back to Henrico County’s finest outdoor exercise park (strangely painted in Univ of FL blue and orange), for a Captain America (1 Pullup and 4 WWII’s, 2 Pullups and 8 WWII’s, etc. until 10 Pullups and 40 WWII’s). Follow that with a few rounds of alternating 20 dips and 10 step ups. Bookend the morning with a mosey to the hill for 10 more Burpies. It was 10 or until J’ville puked. Needless to say, we did 10. Good job J’ville. Finished with a 5 minute stretch in the shaded section of Henrico County’s newest playground in the West End. Fortunately no children were in the area to witness 9 old sweaty guys trying to hold yoga poses.

Happy Birthday America. Glad to have spent that morning with those men.

  • Santa and his 8 reindeer

Santa and his 8 reindeer all posted at Gridiron this beautiful spring-like day. After a warm-up we moseyed over for our first exercise of Triple Check (Dips, Derkins, and a Mosey/Burpee). Then to the soccer field for a Quarter Pounder (25 Heels to Heaven, 50 WWIIs, 75 Flutters, and 100 ‘Merican Hammers). With Prancer (aka J’ville) injuring his calf again, an audible was almost called for an hour of Merkins…but he persevered. Well done J’ville.

After a well deserved twenty count, it was off to 4 Corners (5 Merkins, 10 Mountain Climbers, 15 SSH, and 20 Carolina Dry Docks) with a Bear Crawl for the last leg. 2nd round was an increase of 5 at all corners but modified the Bear Crawl for a Blitzen (aka Earthworm) favorite, the Bernie Sanders for the last 25 yrd leg. All 8 reindeer earned a 20 count before we went back for another round of Triple Check (Step-up, Crab Cakes, Mosey/Burpee).

A mosey to the parking lot for the last 10 minutes with the reindeer balls to the wall for 3 rounds of Chicken Peckers and Donkey Kicks. Finished the day off with a Ring of Fire. Dasher (aka White Deer) showed why he’s Santa’s lead reindeer and brought some impressive Hitchhikers.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
