Ok.  4 lines of Indian Runs was a little ambitious.  It got a little crowded as we worked our way down Commonwealth with a few of the PAX switching lines on accident.  YHC got a little excited with our numbers and decided to divide into 4.  Lesson learned.

YHC was impressed with the speed and cadence of 11s along the trees, especially the two of the regular’s daughters leading the group.  Job well done.

Everything ran fairly smoothly until the breakdown in instructions during Triple Check.  The confusion likely started when YHC instructed the PAX to “pair” up for triple check.  YHC has taken note and will bring handouts next time the instructions get past a 7 word description.

YHC had under-estimated the distance of the run from the fence to the trees but everyone did well.  Bleeder is a machine when it comes to sprints.  For the record, YHC beat Conspiracy on the last leg of triple check.  You know it Conspiracy.  Keep working on your form and you’ll get there.

Loose Goose has signed up to lead Dogpile on Saturday but may need to leave town.  He is requesting a backup just in case a sub is needed.  In case you were wondering TYAs extra spots in the Rugged Maniac are still available.  Bleeder leading RAMM mañana.

Thanks to the PAX for a great turnout.

  • Everybody loves a field trip!

Welcome to FNG, Shakira (the hips don’t lie) who represented well in his first appearance at Source of Truth. It was great having you join us, I hope to see you next week.
The PAX moseyed into Wilson neighborhood hoping to find M.Wilson cooking up a fine breakfast. Unfortunately the PAX instead found a long steady hill with a steep finish. Maybe we’ll try that one day with a little more notice for Wilson.
All represented well today on what was mostly a jog/run event. Estimated distance is approximately 2.5 to 3 miles.

TYA & Wilson were fast, Oyster has a shiny new car, Wedding Singer & Shakira can bond over not very cool names but cool dudes, and YHC is still pretty darn slow.
Have a good one guys, See you next time!

  • RVA takes on the North OBX, round 2

2 PAX arranged to meet at the Currituck Lighthouse in Corolla for an 8am beatdown on a beautiful July morning (no breeze).  Here’s how it went down:

    The Thang:

Mosey to the point on the Currituck Sound beyond the Walehead Club.

COP: 25 SSH, 13 Merkins, 25 Russian Soldiers, 20 Slow Bending squats, maybe some others?

Mosey loop around Walehead Club back to the point.

    4 corners: 5 burpees, 20 LBCs, 20 monkey humpers, 10 Box cutters. (10 minutes)

Lunges around perimeter of 4 corners.

Mosey loop around Walehead Club back to bridge in front of Walehead Club.

Ascending, Descending Bear Crawl over bridge + 5 Merkins on either side…rinse and repeat.

Mosey across bridge to taller portion of wooden walk for dips: 25, 20, 25

Mosey back to cars for COT, where Singer took us out.

    Moleskin:

Lovely morning, but hotter than with Sippy…no breeze.  Brutal.

Meeting up on vacation is easy…let’s do this more often!

Great to be with Wedding Singer away from RVA, both of us pushing the other to perform to our best.  Singer and his wife are expecting their first child in October…and it made YHC happy to think he and his wife are enjoying one of their last beach holidays without little people.  Equally as special are holidays with little people, as both of mine learned to ride their bikes without training wheels today…my 6 year old because it was time and he was ready and my 4 year old because she is a determined younger sibling who couldn’t stand that her brother might take the spotlight….

  • The Week After Shark Week

A great group of 8 showed for our Monday morning offering.

Jog to the soccer field for the Merkin ladder – high knees for the length of the field for 20 Merkins, butt kickers back for 19 Merkins, rinse and repeat the runs and Merkins, reducing the count by one each time, until all have climbed down the ladder.

Stroll to the bus circle for Plank Indian “Run”.  Line up in Plank.  Guy at the back completes Bear Crawl to the front.  Repeated until PAX reached the end of the bus circle.

Hit the grass for the Dirty MacDeuce.  Twelve Carolina Dry Docs followed by 12 Flutter Kicks and 12 Mountain Climbers – all in cadence – constituting one set.  Completed 4 sets total – 12 second countdown between sets.

Mosey to the edge of the front parking lot for several Minutes of Mary plus some stretching.

    Moleskin:

Good to jump back in following vacation.  Bleeder was just back from a trip as well.  YHC failed during the cadence count a couple of times, though, and appreciates the gentle reminders from the assembled PAX.

    Moleskin:

It was a pleasant morning as the weather goes. No Toll turf continues to be soupy and to be repectful of the AO we stayed off the bulk of the field today. Plus YHC did not wat to smell like we did last week with J-Ville! There was some chatter during COT on the start time. Bleeder corrected TYA and the chatter stopped. Bleeder was sporting the kakhi shorts today and Oyster seemed upset as he did not get the memo! Have a great day!

Fitness: F3 offers more than just workouts for men

By MARIA HOWARD Special correspondent | Posted: Saturday, July 11, 2015 10:30 pm

Matt “Sippy Cup” Hartman offered words of encouragement to the 20-plus dripping-wet guys he was leading.

“One more hill, guys. One more hill.”

The group was three-fourths of the way through an hourlong boot-camp-style workout that had taken them up and down the hills of Byrd Park. In between running the root-laden trails, they had dropped for dozens of pushups, pullups and planks in every direction.

The words of encouragement came from not just Hartman, but from all the guys as they huffed and puffed through the drills.

    “Way to go, Conspiracy.”

    “C’mon, Viral.”

    “There you go, Honey Dew.”

This is F3, where nicknames are part of the culture and the leader is just one of the guys.

F3 stands for Fitness, Fellowship and Faith. The workout group was founded in Charlotte, N.C., and started in Richmond last September with a small group of men, some of whom had friends in the Charlotte group.

Jack “Bleeder” Woodfin helped kick off F3 in Richmond.

“I wasn’t working out at all,” he said with a grin, still drenched from the trail runs.

This was the first time leading an F3 workout for Hartman, who joined the group after intersecting them several times one day during a random run in Byrd Park.

“I was running a loop and I kept seeing these guys,” he recalled. They asked him to join in, and he’s been a regular ever since.

Hartman likes to run, and was dubbed “Sippy Cup” because he always carries a large water bottle. It was no surprise that his workout took the group back in the woods for some rough-terrain running.

“Part of my goal was to introduce these guys to those trails,” Hartman said.

F3 workouts are held at multiple locations throughout the Richmond area. This particular one, called “DogPile,” meets at Dogwood Dell in Byrd Park at 6 a.m. every Saturday.

F3 is free and open to anyone, which prompts some interesting questions from outsiders.

“It makes people a little skeptical,” said Paul Salvucci, who has been working out with F3 since it started here.

“They ask if it’s some kind of cult or something.”

The only payment you’re expected to make is leading the group when your name comes up in the rotation.

“It’s not hard to get people to lead a workout,” said Salvucci, who was nicknamed “The Yankee Aggressor” because he grew up in the Northeast. The group posts online workouts for all to see, and newcomers can simply pick one that’s been used before or come up with a new one.

F3 was created in Charlotte in 2011 by a group of guys who had been meeting at a park for several years to work out. Now, more than 3,000 men participate in more than 30 F3 groups throughout the Charlotte area. Once a group grows to 20 to 30 people, an F3 group is spun off so that none gets so large that people don’t know one another.

There are about 80 guys participating in seven F3 workouts throughout the Richmond area. All are early-morning time slots, and all are held in any kind of weather.

“We were out here in the snow in the winter,” Woodfin said.

Salvucci said the Richmond F3 groups are seeing six to seven new guys a week.

“It’s very word-of-mouth-fed,” he said. But it seems to work.

“People come for the workout,” he said. “They stay for the fellowship.”

At the end of each F3 workout, no matter how sweaty the participants might be, they gather for the “Circle of Trust” where they introduce themselves and the leader says a prayer. All faiths are welcome to the group, as are all ages.

But if you’re on the young side (20s or 30s), be prepared for the group to say “hate” when you state your age. If you’re in your 40s, they’ll stay quiet. If you’ve reached the 50s or 60s, they’ll say “respect.”

Salvucci, who gets some “respect” every time he shows up because he’s in his early 50s, said the mission of F3 is to cultivate strong community leaders. He joined because he likes the camaraderie and the team-like atmosphere. He’s a former ice hockey player.

Now he understands the influence of strong values-based support, which has led to F3 expansion across the country.

“We all hold each other accountable for a lot of things in life,” he said.

  • Back to Monument Avenue

8 strong and eager PAX set out on this humid Richmond morning.

    The Thang:

Following Marv’s lead, we ventured back to Monument Avenue to hit one on the better running routes in Richmond.  4 Loops mapped out, 3, 4, 5, and 6 miles.  All loops head North on Commonwealth until you reach Monument, turn right on Monument.  Turnaround points are Thompson for 3, Sheppard for 4, Davis for 5 and Allen for 6.  After turning around head back to Commonwealth, turn left and back to the shovel flag for the finish.

    Moleskin

Great run today, but two strange things at the beginning of the run.  First, when YHC turned the corner onto Commonwealth, I did not see the familiar car of Swirly.  He is always the first one to arrive and is usually warming up on the track before the run.  A vacation has him out of town this week.  Second, since we knew Sippy was also out of town, we were not looking across the street for that familiar headlamp moving towards the start of the run.  Gentlemen, we missed you both out there this week.  Look forward to you being back in the fold next week!

Toga was a FIFO this week.  Toga needed to get his long run in this morning so he arrived at the AO at 445 to start his run and joined us at the flag for 530.  He put in a total of about 10 miles but had to leave before the COT so he could get home to allow his wife to get out and exercise.

Three PAX had the same Brooks running shoes on this morning.  Marv, Circle K, and Fudd (I think), all had the same brand, style and color of running kicks on.  Given the number of brands, styles and colors that is highly unlikely.  I am sure Splinter can do the math on how likely that would be in a random selection of runners?

Circle K was a FRNG today.  He and The Scream opted for the four mile loop.  Both acquitted themselves well making it back to the shovel flag first.  YHC was in hot pursuit of BT and Toga on the way back to the flag, but could not make it before we got to the flag (I am not sure If I had another 50 miles i would have caught them…but hope springs eternal).  Fudd and Saab ran together today.  I think Fudd is trying to replace himself on the BRR.  Would love to have Saab on the team, but I will be sorely disappointed if Fudd is not part of the team.

COT and out into the day to take the world on….

  • Pre-Blast — BRM Training Run

Aye, Tomorrow is Sunday, and TYA are organizing another fun-filled trail run for the BRM crew, F3 guys, and any friends/family members they want to bring along.  We are planning do the buttermilk/north bank loop + rinse and repeat.

Please meet a the Pump House parking lot at 4p.  Bring water.

    Johnsonville

  • Just hangin’ around…

5 faithful convened at Dogpile in the Gloom for a solid weekend beatdown.  The weather was 72 and breezy with a light rain.  It couldn’t have been any better.

    The Thang:

Mosey from the shovel flag towards the Nickel Bridge and circle back to grassy area for COP:

    25 x SSH

    20 x Copperhead squats

    20 x Don Quixote

    10 x Merkin

    20 x Flutter Kicks

Mosey over to the front of the Carillon for a merkin/lunge circuit.  Partner up:  one runs up the steps to top of Carillon and lunges to other side, down steps and back to start while the other one does Merkins x 20 and planks.  Repeat 3x.

Mosey to pull up bars for Hangs:  Overhand grip, hold pull-up position for 10 count, move to full arm extension for 20 count without letting go of the bar.  x 2.  Then, same thing with underhand grip. x 2.

Mosey to amphitheater for Ladder Climbs of the squat and incline merkin variety:

Squats: ascending reps to 15 up 15 steps, then 15 steps back down with descending reps to 1.

    Incline merkins:  same as above

Mosey to grass between Carillon and pull up bars for 6 MOM:

    Freddy Mercury x 20

    Box Cutter x 20

Crossed Leg Lifts x 20 (10 on each leg)

    LBC x 20, then x 10 double time.

Mosey almost back to flag for Ring of Fire:  merkins x 15, repeat

Mosey to shovel flag for COT.

    MOLESKIN:

The light rain and cooler temps today were perfect.  Summer vacations are in full swing (or fartsacks are exceptionally comfy on rainy weekends), and while we missed some of our brothers we were able to persevere.  It seemed ironic that the first thing we passed this morning was a funnel cake trailer #funnelcakesandsadclowns.  YHC noticed that mumblechatter is much more focused in a small group, and everyone participates.  Taking a page from Fudd, YHC worked this AO on the fly, which indeed facilitates some divine inspiration. You can continue to set your watch to Conspiracy’s arrival time, who joined us just in time for the last two Hangs.  Wilson read about the Hangs in a magazine while trapped in NYC (turns out he can read) and YHC got his blessing to give those a shot.  After 4 rotations it was apparent that the PAX needed to move on to the next exercise, as evident from the fact that I could no longer close my hands. #needtoworkonthegrip

The Squat and Incline Merkin Ladders were considerably more difficult than YHC had thought they would be.  (Those hard bodies don’t come easy, boys!)  Totals for today (including COP) squats=  245, merkins/incline merkins= 335.  Strong to quite strong!

Wilson was feeling especially chipper for the Ring of Fire and went with an ambitious 15 count x 2 despite the previous merkin load, then continued to push the rest of the PAX by overlapping reps.  Our pecs thank you, Wilson.

Announcements:  GET A SUNDAY PAPER TOMORROW.  The article on our F3 PAX will be in there, and given that the writer had a camera I’m sure we are going to have some fun at the expense of someone’s poor form.  Also, we need a Q for August 1 at Gridiron as J’ville and Earthworm will not be available.  They have been generous in keeping the original AO alive and kicking.

    I enjoyed it men.  Aye!

    -BT

  • Quivers and Drool

Five of the PAX, including a DoubleDipper, gathered at the GridIron in the rainy and refreshingly cool Gloom.  In light of the recent F3 RVA emphasis on running it seemed appropriate to audible to a ground and pound. So the PAX hit the dirt as follows:

    The Thang:

COP (1st half):  Five six minute sets of x10 Burpees, Merkin ISOs with intervening regular and side planks, and core medleys (eg. x25 Dead Bugs, x50 LBCs, x25 Dead Bugs Erectus, x25 Alabama Prom Dates, etc.) with some random slow deep squats, deep squat ISOs, and Downward Dog based stretches adding flavor to the playbook.

Mosey over to Pillars for x25 SSHs, x25 Don Quixotes, and x25 Partner Leg Tosses.

COP (2nd half): Four six minute sets of x10 Burpees, Merkin ISOs with intervening regular and side planks, and core medleys (eg. x25 Dead Bugs, x50 LBCs, x25 Rosalitas, Protractor Penmanship, x25 Alabama Prom Dates, etc.) with some random x25 Carolina Dry Docks, Carolina Dry Dock ISO, Dips and Dips ISO, and Al Gores adding some change of pace to the ground game.

Lunge Walk and then mosey back to parking lot

COP (OT):  x5 Burpees – “wave” style; Merkin ISO finale

    COT:

Announcements – (1) Earthworm and Johnsonville out of town August 1 – GridIron will need a Q that day; (2) F3 RVA celebrates its 1 year anniversary on September 20, 2015 – GridIron calling for convergence on September 19 at Pouncey Tract – all Pax posting challenge (and perfect “bring an FNG” time)!

Prayer concerns – spoken – father and family, friend, and coach – and unspoken.

BOM – collaborative prayer – the Pax expressed gratitude and thanksgiving, and appealed to the Great Physician for healing and peace amidst the storms.

Moleskin:  A fair bit of blood and saliva DNA was deposited at the 63 minute GirdIron this morning.  Certain of the PAX – those suffering from sensitive knee skin syndrome – prefer grass over asphalt – suggestion: man up or next time bring cushioned knee pads.

Unlike the grass-loving J’Ville and Loose Goose, Lugnut expressed ambivalence on the turf versus tarmac issue; he did confess, though, to enjoying the restfulness of moseys and runs.  YHC prefers slow countdowns.

Who didn’t achieve a quiver on the Merkin ISOs?  Just a little?  And was J’ville the only one who marked his ISO hold with a puddle of drool?  Loose Goose would know as he demonstrated exemplary form in his holds at the Merkin bottom – chin up and NSA eyes on (Conspiracy would be proud).

Brain Tumor Q’d the DogPile beat down that reportedly included a Merkin smokefest – he was primed for the Merkins ISOs after dashing over to double dip at GridIron for the 2nd Half.  TClaps!

Two of the PAX enjoined the 2ndF at the Daily Grind – probably planned a run-centric beat down under J’ville’s Q next Saturday.
