  • 10 slices of Coping Cake

A couple of days ago my wife was taking pictures for a woman who developed a cake recipe inspired by the grief she felt when she lost her infant son. Cashew cardamom coping cake. Then yesterday I was getting one of my own 2.0s ready for school and we talked about some of the things that happened in Texas; it was heavy. I gave him a huge hug before he got on the bus and I went inside and had a giant piece of the coping cake. A few minutes later my wife got a call from a dear friend in Sweden in the late stages of brain cancer. She said how happy she was to live every moment of this life. Afterwards I went back to the kitchen and had to get a second helping of cake.

We all process our different kinds of grief in different ways. But the most clear to me this morning was that in times of tragedy (especially in times of tragedy) the fellowship we felt out there in the rain and the gloom and in the COT… that is own special recipe. A way through and forward. That’s the kind of energy we respond with, for each other and for our communities. Bad things happen but we have the 3 Fs. For that, I’m grateful. /end speech

    It went like this:

Mosey down and around to the lower entrance. Warmups were SSHs, DxQs, imperial squat walkers, mirkins, LBCs plus a few other things.

Dora: timer runs up the stairs, 5 burpees, then back down the grass. 100 WW2s, 200 dips, 300 jump squats. Ended with some slow breathing exercises.

Mosey up the stairs to the wall for the Pigskin special: 10 people’s chair arm raises, 10 BttW toe taps, 15 donkey kicks OYO. Then 10 people’s chair milkers, 10 BttW Australian mountain climbers, 15 donkey kicks OYO. Then 10 people’s chair Lalannes, 10 BttW hip slaps, 15 donkey kicks OYO.

Mosey to the amphitheater for a quick little triple check: timer goes up the big steps and around, hold elbow planks, SSHs.

Mosey back to the flag for the COT and announcements.

Shout out to Janeway and Comrade for passing through from the wilds of North Georgia. Great to you have you guys out and best of luck to Comrade on his college tour.

    Peace.

Great work by the PAX, and good to see Bedpan.  It was a quieter work-out today with no White Deer, and sans Pigskin, we stuck to one language.

Prayers for Ukraine, Lab Rat, Gypsy and others with unspoken ailments.

No blood drive on June 4th.  See you at the convergence on Monday.

God is good all of the time!

  • World Cup Preview 2022

9 of USMNT soccer studs came out to Mary to get a scrimmage in before World Cup play begins. Hitchhiker led us in some stretching and then divided us into teams. A quick of recap of what transpired….

The Golden Boot was given to Goldberg and Snuff, both delivered an arsenal of goals.

Handshake and Upchuck were the Defensive MVPs with their defensive tactics on the football field translated well on the pitch.

Hitchhiker wins best game plan with not alerting anyone when he decided to randomly switch teams.

TYA wins best play of the game with his beautiful slide tackle on Shiplap. Textbook form and has the bruise to prove it now. It was worthy of being on Sportscenter’s Top Ten. You just can’t coach heart…

With the wet field, many slips and falls were had (some more for others…), but fun was had by all. Luckily no injuries came about!

    Great idea and Q Hitchhiker!

Numberama, Namerama, Hitcherhiker took us out.

  • Balls in the Mist: Reprise

12 warriors and the ghost of Toga gathered in the mist for 45 minutes of Mary. Here’s what transpired:

COP: Mosey to corner of Grove and Westmoreland. Deadman hang // Helicopters // DQs // Acorn Pickers // Imperial Walkers // Ukranian Soldiers // 1 legged APDs // LBCs // Hand release Merkins // Inverted Crabcakes // Elbow Plank to Pickle Pounders // SSHs 21s // 5 burpees

Lindsay: 30 Dips at the Picnic Tables // 10 Merkins at the school entrance. Repeato decreasing and increasing by 5, always total of 40.

Dodge Ball! : Mosey to the Tennis Courts. Teams of 6. When you get hit, run to the other end of the courts and do 3 burpees, run back and then jump back into the game. Headshots allowed. After 5 minutes, whichever team has the most players on the court wins. We played 3 five minute games, Team A (aka “shitheads”) won one game and Team B (aka “awesomeness”) won 2 games.

COP back at the flag, American Hammersx50 IC.

Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out.

NMS: It felt like a reprise of the most commented BB ever with the misty weather and plenty of slippery balls. Many amazing sports-center worthy plays, and many terrible middle aged men throws. Handshake had some highlight moments, TYA is surprisingly wily, and Shiplap likes taking out men nearly twice his age. so much fun!

Praying for comfort, peace, justice and change for the people of Uvalde and for our violent society.

  • It looked good on paper

3 men showed up to help YHC celebrate his post birthday bash at MANNdate. This is how it went down on a pleasant spring morning.

COP: SSH x 52 in honor of YHC’s birthday, LBC’s, alabama prom dates, arm circles, DQ’s, Imperial walkers, helicopters

Mosey with KB to drop off loop for oval time. Four corners/curves, different exercise each spot: lawnmowers, 5×10, each arm, demon crushers, 5×10, American Hammers, 5×10, single leg squats, 5×5, each leg.

Back to start of loop, start walking around the loop, every 20 steps switch to a new exercise, never stop walking. Exercises were: halos, around the worlds, tricep extension with both arms, don’t drop the soap.

Find a curb, time for 11’s, situp press and calf raises, only had time for a few sets of these.

COT, numberama, namerama, YHC took us out.

    NMS

It’s been a while since I Q’d, and very few so far this year. Felt great to come up with something new like walking around the loop while doing exercises, which we all concluded pretty much sucked, so it’s sure to show up in the future at MANNdate. Great mumblechatter this morning, though we did for some reason start off with talk about bank mergers, thankfully moved on quickly to more entertaining topics, though at this hour YHC cannot remember any of them. Prayers this morning for the families in Texas, and our fervent hope is that these tragedies don’t keep happening.

We talked about getting together for a 3rd F event in the early part of June, perhaps for a golfing outing. Let’s make it happen!

As usual, I have No Idea what I’m doing…

  • We found Jessica’s ID

The typical troop of Wdoggers were bright eyed and bushy tailed for a YHC adventure Q. We started with some good stretching because stretching is key to staying limber and loose. Rookie Q mistake, YHC looked down at the wrist to see what time it was on the drive in and sure enough no watch to be found. So phone in pocket it was and thankfully no phone was lost, but an ID for Jessica was found, born in 1981 and lives in Richmond, so if you know her tell her we have her ID. After stretching…

Mosey on over to Love Hill. YHC was in Hotlanta last week and learned a new Exicon, there was no name but YHC thinks Atlanta works. It went like this each round consists of starting at the bottom of the hill and running to a middle point on the hill and doing a different exercise, then run back down and do 10 SSH, then run up to the top of the hill and do 10 more SSH, then run back down to the bottom and do squats until the 6 arrives, once 6 arrives all PAX does 10 squats together. For the next several rounds repeato with the middle hill stop exercise cycling through, one round with 5 merkins, one round with 10 monkey humpers and another round with plank jacks. After that fun, mosey on over to the coupon storage area.

Everyone picks up one coupon, and headed over to the amphitheater where Jessica’s ID was found. So the next exercise we will just call Jessica. Starting at the bottom of the amphitheater, do one block burpee for each step, and continue on up, with one block burpee each. From the top head back down with one block merkin. Then we returned the coupons to their home.

Somewhere in all that working out we lost Hitchhiker, which we incorrectly assumed was tied to his sciatic nerve, but it was quite the opposite, Hitch needed the PortoJohn which he thankfully found nearby. There was a collective sigh of relief when Hitch returned and was not injured but just needed to see a man about a horse.

Next up head to the sunken field with Aerobe in tow. YHC tried this one earlier in the year when it was a bit darker. It didn’t go that well and Bodos chucked it into the woods but it was later found. For this time it was much lighter out. So the way it works. the exercise is timed, and mission is to get the Aerobe down and back on the field within 5 minutes, but you cannot throw it to the person who just tossed it to you and every time it touches the ground the PAX does 5 burpees. Off we went. Lots of dropping, we probably did about 30 burpees when all was said and done but we made it to the finish line with seconds to spare, the catch was if we didn’t make it back before the 5 minute time mark then it was 20 burpees for all.

After that it was a mosey on back to the flag for some more light stretching.

    Numbers, names, announcements, and prayers.

YHC was in need of this, this morning, YHC was in a somber mood due to the recent tragic events, and YHC saw the Q sheet was open and knew that this is something that will be able to lift spirits. As a dad to young children the recent events hit harder, so hug your kids. YHC was happy to see these faces this morning and it was comforting. YHC took us out and took great comfort in Bodos sharing some thoughtful words. Thanks for supporting me everyone.

  • Tour de Tuckahoe

Eight musky gringos took Riverside Drive by storm before the awakening. A dewey mist encapsulated the posh neighborhood. These are the tales that were spread by the engineer of the 527 freighter out of Toledo.

Short mosey to the corner of the parking lot for warmarama that included Invisible Jump Rope, Helicopters, DQ’s, Jazzercise, Dead Man Hang and Arm Circles. Everyone awake, lets roll:

    The THANG:

Indigenous People Run down River Road to Highland. Rear sprints to the front and sets the pace. Luckily only a few motorists out mostly from the opposite direction.

Mailbox Roulette: Mosey down Highland Brocode style. 10 merkins for every mailbox on the right, 10 imperial squat walkers for every mailbox on the left. More residents on the left.

Partner Up on Westham Station: Runner runs to the 2nd no parking sign while partner performs various mobile exercises: bear crawl, lunges with a twist, broad jumps. This was so much fun we did it twice to make it to the corner of Westham and South Ridge.

South Ridge Lindsay: Back to the flag brocode style. At each intersection perform 40 reps of Carolina Dry Docks and LBC’s.

Still time on the clock? Mankillers: Time to get tone for SOJ takeover in a couple weeks. No sissy scorpion kicks or escalating four corners is allowed on the more cultured side of the James.

Time was called. Names, Numbers, Announcements, Prayers – Upchuck took us out.

Convergence on Monday at 7 – Brown’s Island. Ruck begins at 6.

Prayers for those families in Texas. Hold your family and friends today. Tell them you love them just so they know.

NMS: Great mumble chatter today. Good to see Shiplap out and about while House Party really making F3 work for him. Upchuck and Handshake brought both up to speed on First Watch traditions that occur on the regular. Hope to see you both again for the earliest and most entertaining AO. Thank you brothers for the opportunity to lead as it was good to see the happenings of the First Watch neighborhood.

  • WTH-open for business

It was great to see Gypsy (and his dog) walking the bus loop while the rest of us ran 4.25 miles and did some other exercises to slow us down. We missed a WTH regular in Pigskin but I am confident he and Mickey Mouse were doing burpees while we did our thing. Here is how it went:

The group ran to West Broad Village and around the lake before cutting over to Thamesford Way. We then ran to the end and cut over to the Church Run pool parking lot. After some warmups of Imperial Walkers, Don Quixote and Freddie Mercury’s, we tackled some 7’s of WWIIs and Burpees, running back and forth between parking lot islands in between.

While I considered running to Gomer Pyle’s house, I forgot the TP so instead we ran back to Thamesford and hit every cul-de-sac on the left and alternated between 20 LBCs (3 times) and 10 Merkins (2 times). We then went back to the West Broad Village lake and ran to the Gazebo. There we did 20 dips and 10 Derkins. From there we look the long way back to the flag and met back up with Gypsy.

Announcements: Convergence on Monday at 7AM, park near Tredegar/Belle Island. Bridge on 6/4. Next 2nd Tuesday West End 2nd F lunch on 6/14.

Prayers for Gypsy, Pinto, my friend Ryan, and all the Texas families impacted by the terrible tragedy yesterday.

Thanks for letting me Q this morning. Always a pleasure.

  • Triple Hat Trick

8 warriors and 3 runners arrived to a gloom laden morning at SOT to bust the hump in hump day! YHC had several thoughts on this particular workout but settled on the Triple Hat Trick on Mount Midlo. According to the bus driver here is what went down.

COP: Mosey to the front of school 20 each SSH, LBC; 10 Each DQ’s, Jazzercise, Helicopters, Imperial Walkers, Tic/Toc’s, Coper head squat, Dead man hang, Merkins, Flutters, Dollies.

Workout: Mosey to the base of mount Midlo. Grab a partner. Partner 1 runs to top of mount midlo while partner 2 performs a trifecta of 20 squats, 20 merkins, 20 LBC’s. Do this 3 times then multiply by 3 for a total of 9 times. Up hill with lunges, high knees, butt kickers, Bernie. Mosey back to front of school. Wind sprints across the front lot.

School employee was hoisting the flag and we stopped for a salute. Shout out to Bullseye who noticed she was not putting the flag at half staff in honor of the Texas school children and teachers who lost their lives yesterday, she obliged.

Announcements: Convergence Memorial Day 7am Tredegar. 6/4 The bridge charlottesville.

Prayers: To those families in Texas who are grieving a senseless school shooting. YHC took us out in prayer. Some good 2nd F after the workout led by Honeymoon.
