  • Loops and Lariats

Hard to say, but something like 6 showed up for this week’s version of Sunday Funday. Temps remained at exactly 70 with sunny skies. According to Anthrax’s dog, PETA, the following all happened approximately 2 minutes before Anthrax showed up.

    06:57 : Saab launches.

07:00 : Shakedown, Sippy Cup, Lab Rat, and UpChuck launch. Route was Buttermilk (+Lariat), Forest Hill, then fire road with Shakedown and Lab Rat returning via North Bank.

07:03 : Anthrax and PETA launch. They ran what they ran.

Sippy and YHC circled, numbered, named, and COT’d thinking others were going much further. YHC apologizes for under-estimating the speed of the remaining PAX (or over-estimating our own speed).

NMS: Great to catch up with Sippy Cup for today’s run. YHC always learns something with Sippy; today was no exception. Thank you.

  • Another Anniversary

12 men braved the perfect weather to post on Satan’s Hill for a special anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Q by YHC.

Warm Up – SSH, Hillbillies (Yee Haw!) and Stretching

Wilson was offered the option of A or B; he chose B so the PAX broke into three lines for a bear crawl Indian Run to the top of Satan’s Hill. Back down and repeat because it was so much fun (the 2nd time was actually a little easier).

At the top again the PAX broke into 2 groups for 4-Corners – Murcans, Carolina Dry Docks, LBC, Squats

Finish and head to the rock pile for Military Press, Curls for the Girls and squats – Rotate to the left with each set, so we could all enjoy the rock Parker chose (Honeymoon commented it was larger than Virginia).

One more trip to the top of SH in the bear crawl Indian Run (that last one put a whole lotta hurtin’ on most of us).

Circle for some focus mitts training, without the mitts, where we learned that Vagabond has some boxing skills inherited from his grandfather and heaven help anybody trying to return a car to Kelly’s lot!

Numberama, Name-o-rama, YHC took us out in prayer.

October 25, 1944- in a segment of the largest naval battle in history, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, known as the battle off Samar a superior Japanese force surprised an overmatched American Task Force. The Japanese had 4 battleships, including the largest battleship ever put to sea, the Yamato, and a number of cruisers and the Americans had 3 destroyers, a Destroyer Escort and some vulnerable Escort Carriers. It looked like the Japanese would have an easy time of it when the USS Johnston (Destroyer) led by Commander Ernest Evans (posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor) turned toward the Japanese fleet to attack. The largest gun the Americans had were 5 inch guns. The Yamato had 18.1 inch guns that weighed more than the entire Johnston. I encourage you to look the battle up as it is one of the most courageous chapters in Naval History.

  • Vichyssoise

When no scheduled Q showed up, YHC decided to get the PAX started. Vagabond suggested a hot potato Q; but I decided to just take over and serve up some vichyssoise.

Warm up – SSH, Murcans, Other stuff

Up the hill in a bear crawl Indian run.

4 Corners – Murcans, LBC, squats

Back for rock work – Military press, curls for the girls, squats, murcans, planks etc.

    MOLESKIN

YHC took off early to get day 25 of the mile-a-day challenge knocked out. Apparently Splinter was lurking somewhere in the bushes ready to ambush as YHC forgot whether to turn on Lakewood or Sunset.  Pre-workout mumblechatter centered on William and Mary and if the schools’ athletics were ever good enough to have a true rival. Jon Stewart doesn’t like UpChuck’s line of questioning. Honeydo, chime in.  Solid work today Gents, fences are merely a suggestion.

COT : Sharpening conversations took place. YHC is getting weary with a teething baby and a three year old that won’t go to sleep until 9:30 pm. Asking for prayers for that and YHC’s left knee not doing so hot.

NMMS : The Dab is no joke. If we would have went to Round 3, YHC’s form would have taken a serious hit and wouldn’t have maintained the 10 burpees per minute pace. Serious Question : Is Doozy really 50 years old? YHC is suspicious and thinks he might be in his 20’s.

  • Ziti Sensation

First off, we made a mouthwatering, cheesy, elegant baked ziti with ground beef. Next, we made a breathtaking, colorful salad topped with all sorts of vegetables. Finally, there was crispy, golden garlic bread from the finest grain. And lastly we made crunchy, gooey chocolate chip cookies. All in all, this meal was a success and was for a great cause.

    THE THANG :

Combine all the sauces and seasonings into the slower cooker then stir them together

Put pork shoulder into slow cooker and season it all over with salt and pepper then roll it around in the seasoning mix

Cook on Low temp for 8 to 10 hours

YHC encourages any PAX who haven’t Q’ed Breaking Bread to sign up for the future. You’ll love it. For the time being, the meals are drop off only due to COVID but maybe sometime in the near future it will return to sitting down with the residents for a meal together

  • All Hail the A Team

    COP:
Arm circles, Cherry Pickers, DQs, SSHs, Mt Climbers, WWIIs, & Merkins.

    The Thang:

    Bermuda Triangle –
Bear crawl, run (past a dead squirrel), 5 Burpees, Burnie Sanders, 20 LBCs.

    7 of Diamonds –
Handshake pointed out, quite expertly, that it appeared that I wanted everyone to get into 2 groups, instead of groups of 2. It was an appreciated point. At each corner we did 7 Merkins, then 14 Mt Climbers, 21 American Hammers, 28 Side Straddle Hops, 21 American Hammers ,14 Mt Climbers, & lastly 7 Merkins. We ran the length of the field and moved across the width in any manner conceivable with the exception of walking or running. This one looked shorter on paper. I think the new name for this exercise is The Clock Burner.

    Coupon Fun –
Plank and Pass – Everyone grabbed a coupon. As a bunch of coupons lay scattered about, we used exactly 2 of them. With little time remaining, we broke into Team A and Team B. We planked shoulder to shoulder. P1, at the 1st position, passed a coupon to P2, and so on. The man at the end of the line picked up the coupon and ran to the 1st position. We Rinsed and Repeated until P1 was back in the 1st position. Team A won.

We kept our team and lines, all stood and faced the same direction. P1 passed the coupon over their head to P2, who was behind them. P2 passed it behind them, but b/w their legs. P3 did an overhead pass to P4, and so on. The final man ran to the 1st position. We Rinsed and Repeated until P1 returned to the starting position. Team A won again. YHC was not on Team A.

    Native American Run BTTF.

COT: Numbers, names, announcements (the shoe drive is still on), prayer requests for a couple of the gents’ mother-in-laws regarding physical and mental health concerns. YHC took us out in prayer.

I’m truly grateful to be given the opportunity to lead this group of men in the strengthening of our bodies and spirits. May we all continue to push each other to grow and to develop into the men we are intended to become.
