  • 9v9 SOJ Ultimate

A solid 18-PAX posted to NoToll in breezy fair weather to play some Ultimate Frisbee. Here’s how 9v9 played out:

    The THANG:

The light colors were down a man briefly until Fresh Prince showed up, and then Light and Dark teams exchanged touchdown for touchdown until they were about 3-3… that’s when the Light team pulled away and despite a couple more worthy touchdowns by the Dark team, the Light jersey’d gents won the day. CONGRATS!!! There were a LOT of highlights for the morning, but the one that stands out was Beaker (Respect) running across the end zone to put the smackdown on a Nancy Lopez touchdown. It was like watching two worlds colliding. Not sure Nancy has had a hit like that in a couple decades. Strong work today fellas. SYITG, DTH

Mosey BTTF for Stretch & COT:

    • Counterama # 18
    • Namerama
    • Announcerama (see Comments)
    • YHC took the PAX out in Prayer
  • Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

A solid Pax of 9 arrived for a muggy morning at Heartbreak Ridge. Here’s what went down, more or less.

Mosey to the side of the school for COP – SSH, imperial walkers, Don Quixotes, arm circles, merkins and LBCs.

Head to the elementary school for a DORA (even though we had the perfect triple check numbers). After some confusion, we did our 100 burpees, 200 reverse crunches and 300 squats.

Mosey back to middle school for a round of AMRAP pull ups, with the rest of the Pax doing sets of dips.

Next we did 3 rounds of Jerkins at the Jerkin gym.

Finally, a triple check at the ridge – merkins, flutters and Bernie to the top.

Back to the flag for a quick 5 merkins.

Numberama, nameorama and Handshake took us out.

Pinto won the award for dressing like the Q. His red shirt was not quite as form fitting as mine, but it was a great effort. Child size medium seems to work best.

  • Ultimate Broga

2 Hardy Broga veterans arrived at the courts of No Toll early for a pregame Broga session. Before the real competition began, PAX went through a series of leg and body stretches that resulted in numerous groans. All was good as no injuries were reported once we stepped back down to the beginner level. Great work this morning.

  • 5 Fingers for 5 Years

18 men of power and commitment shluffed off whatever allure the Fart Sack may still possess and posted with pride to the latest edition of The Spider Run. With conditions sunny, 70, and 150% humidity, the PAX set off precisely at the stroke of 05:30.

BOLO for F3 night at the Diamond to watch the Squirrels sometime this summer.

July 17. Mark it on your calendar. Notify your friends in the Richmond PD. Hitchhiker will be hosting Karaoke Night at his new home.

Prayers for BoBerry’s father as he recovers from one surgery and prepares for another.

Hats off to the VCU Baseball team and F3’s own No Tools. Awesome season and supremely awesome hitting in the post-season.

    NMS:

Today marks 5 years with F3RVA for YHC. Special thanks for HoneyDo for talking YHC into the first workout. You all are the best friends, teachers, mentors, and leaders YHC could ask for. There’s nothing you can’t do if you get a group of enthusiastic people with positive minds and a willingness to help.

    UpChuck spits the bit.

  • I signed up for the workout that would have no running

7 strong showed up to Satan’s Hill. Apparently YHC hijacked the Q from Hermie. We were both sure we had signed the Q sheet and only Hermie was right. YHC emphatically took the Q and away we went.

COP- 20 each: SSH, LBC’s. 10 each: DQ’s, cherry pickers, Helicopters, Jazzercise (And yes you need to put some effort into it ladies), Imperial walkers, Hillbilies, Merkins,

    A Triple Triple:

1st triple Runner the otterdale horseshoe, Squats, Rock curls

2nd triple Runner Dog path horseshoe, Plank jacks and LBC’s

3rd triple, Runner to top of lot for 10 incline merkins, Rock presses and rock triceps.

YHC had started his watch late and thought he had more time but had to call BTF in middle of the 3rd triple check.

Announcements: Ultimate Frisbee at No toll.

Prayers to Duke’s MIL as she recovers. YHC took us out in prayer.

  • Tuckahoe Sweatfest

9 grizzled studs started the week off right for a moist beatdown at the Tuckahoe Elementary Sauna. This is what was rumored to have occurred according to the fully customized golf cart that provided a quick breeze.

Mosey down to Lindsay Ct for COP at the cul de sac. Warm Up included SSH’s, DQ’s, Dead Man Hang, One Legged Merkins, Plank Jack Merkins, Freddie Mercury’s along with some mild Broga to get the relaxation started. Everyone sweating, let’s start…

    THE THANG:

    – Love Hill: Partner up for the trip back up to Lindsay. Partner Runs to the top, returns and switches. Exercises included Bear Crawls, Lunges, Broad Jump Burpees. AG for the 6

    – Triple Check: Mosey down to West Drive Circle to check on Pucker’s house. Find 2 friends – 1 runner (counter clockwise around Circle), Flutterkicks & Jump Squats. Complete 3 rounds, one extra circle for Faceplant. So much fun, lets do it again.

    – Triple Check #2: 2 runner (clockwise around Circle), American Hammers, Carolina Dry Docks. Broga Stretching for the 6.

    – Parking Lot Merkins: Mosey up to teachers parking lot. Bearcrawl Merkins. Bearcrawl across the parking lot with 1 merkin at every line. Short circle in the grass for some Broga and calm the heart down. Return trip with Bearcrawl back across parking lot, this time adding 1 additional merkin at each line.

    – BTTF for minute of plank. Numbers, Names Announcements, YHC took us out.

NMS: Thick morning reduced the mumble chatter. Humidity had everyone sweating at warm up and did not stop. Handshake requested some Broga early on, and YHC happily obliged. PAX had not ventured over to Puckers abode in a while. Much traffic in this area to include a 6 seater golf cart that flew buy. Pucker and Offshore have their models on order to avoid the congested parking at Kuba Kuba Dos. Some light stretching throughout made for an enjoyable morning. Handshake offered grillmaster tips and recipes throughout, because nothing beats a humid morning like thinking of cooking over a warm grill.

Thank you for allowing me the honor to lead this morning. Always great to start the week with good friends.

Humpday Happy Hour at Hardywood West Creek sometime in June.

  • Time to think and reflect

With Winklevoss and Crash Test Dummy getting ready to graduate later this afternoon YHC needed a bit of normal to start the morning. 5:30 and it looks like YHC is on his own for the day. Headed to Twin Team for some repetition. 5 times up and down the hill and back to the flag, mission accomplished. For those of you with younger kids, watch out it goes quicker than you think.

  • Solo Run in Midtown Manhattan

YHC visited Manhattan last month to celebrate his 21 Wedding anniversary with his M who used to live in the upper East Side. Wanting to get an easy 4 mile run in before returning to Richmond and before it was getting hot (was a cool non humid 70 degrees at 6:15am) found that I was running a sub 8 minute average pace for the entire run. If anyone has been to Central Park, there are some hills and it is a BIG park as my route was about 1/2 of the park north and south(about 2 miles (30 street blocks(59th to 89th street) and stayed on the East Drive most of the run.

During the run YHC was thinking of how COVID-19 has severely impacted this area as we were still wearing masks in the buildings and on the streets when not exercising (I jogged to Central Park from the hotel near Lexington and 55th Street which was about .5 miles each way which turned into a nice warm up and cool down for the run), but still had to mask up in the hotel back to the room.

Look forward to visiting again soon….cheers…CB

  • Atrophy

14 stallions entered the paddock for today’s running of The Dogpile Stakes (Probation, soon to be renamed “Rosie Ruiz,” joined later). The clock struck 6, the bell sounded, and temps were 70 and sunny. According to the dobermann pinscher the PAX EH’d today, this is more or less what happened:

Mosey off campus to Shirley, then to the Shields Lake for the COP.

    SSH
    DQ
    IW
    Dead Man Hang
    APD
    Rosalitas
    HRMs

Mosey approximately 30 feet to the southeast for a Triple Check.

Partner 1: run to the fence
    Partner 2: SSH
    Partner 3: Hello dolly

Mosey to the breezeway at the Maymont Nature Center for a Second Triple Check.

Partner 1: run to parking spaces, bear crawl the length of the parking lot, then run the remainder of the loop
    Partner 2: Dips
    Partner 3: Run the stairs

Mosey out the back of the parking to Colorado Ave and then to the Amelia Street School. Use the back lawn for Triple Check Number 3.

Partner 1: run up the hill to the fence
    Partner 2: WWII
Partner 3: Mercans or Carolina Dry Docks (pax choice)

Mosey through some streets, specifically Meadow, then right on Dakota, and left on Hampton. Pull into the parking lot on the right.

Run half the lot (that’s one), perform 10 snow angels (avoid the Dobermann), run back (two), perform 10 squats. Then, run back (three) and repeat the snow angels. Run back (four) and repeat the squats. Run back (five) Repeat the snow angels. Done.

Mosey onward. Hampton to Kansas to North Bank Trail. Run the trail to the stone wall at the bottom of the ramps.

    Double Check:

Partner 1: run to the double fence gates
Partner 2: Balls to the wall.

    Two rounds.

Run the trail to the Pump House parking lot, then up the hill to Park and back to the shovel flag.

    Probation appeared.

Numbers, names, YHC took us out with a reminder of the opportunities available to our generation, if we take them.

    Announcements:

Monday, June 7th (this Monday), The Punisher will start promptly at 18:00 at Lynwood Holton Elementary, perform some exercises, and then migrate to a watering hole nearby for the (usually) semi-annual Fellowship Q. It’s the 1st and 2nd F combined. This somehow counts towards the June Tour Challenge.

Puppy Pile is this Saturday at 07:00. For those not familiar, this is F3RVA’s kid friendly work out (all genders, all ages). YHC believes attendees have ranged from 3 to 18 over the years. Contests, prizes, games, and general hi jinx are expected (DTH has the details). Rumor has it that the contestant who tries the hardest will be entered into a drawing for a 2007 Honda with a “Perfect Service Record.” Of course it does.

Breaking Bread has two openings this summer (Thank you, Garbage Plate). July 24 and August 28 are open. YHC thanks any PAX in advance. Drop YHC a line for a quick overview of the activity. Basically, dinner for 10 or so folks recovering from medical issues, surgeries, etc. They and I thank you.

Please keep YHC’s friend Bam Bam in your prayers. He’s had a tough week following a heart attack on Wednesday. Best for a successful recovery.

    NMS:

Today brought a first rate sunrise, a nice feature of summer F3. Today’s “route” was a reprise of a workout led a few years ago by a Mr. Hard E. Wood, most recently of Amelia, Virginia. YHC was thinking through various memories of his 5 years with F3, and a couple of workouts came to mind. This memory was hazy, mostly because it involved several moments of actual or partial passing out (and we might have done something like this twice). According to Sippy Cup’s recollection, the original beat down was awful (meaning: miserably good), and included Sippy Cup carrying YHC (for sure, that happened). YHC maintains that Sippy must have been impaired or possessed, because Sippy only agreed to carry YHC as Sippy momentarily believed YHC and he were of comparable size. Sorry, pal.

Flatline reminded the PAX that tomorrow is the 77th Anniversary of the landings in Normandy (“D-Day”). As many of you know, YHC’s father (b. 1924) was part of that generation (and entered Europe across those beaches in the fall of 1944, long after the fighting had moved on). This is a good week to remember the various sacrifices that generation of men and women made for our country and their fellow humans. In fact, this weekend is also the anniversary of the various naval and air battles at Midway in 1942, a series of events which halted the tide of the war in the Pacific. Throughout that conflict, whether at home or overseas, each person had a role, whether large or small, in advancing the cause.

Let’s take a moment to ask what role each of us can contribute to the benefit of society in 2021.

  • Beach Week with Gomer

3 studs rose early to meet the dawn, work off some calories, and prepare themselves for Beach Week (suns out, guns out). According to the 18 year olds preparing to graduate high school, this is how far the group ran:

Robinson to Boat Lake to Paddle Boat (yes, these are the real names) to AA Blvd., to Blanton, to Garrett, to Rugby, to Pump House, and then back up Park to hit Dogpile from the reverse slope.

Normal route on the way home, joined by Sippy Cup.

Numbers, Names, and YHC took us out with a reminder to work hard on our patience (specifically on YHC’s patience).

NMS: Going to Beach Week with Gomer and his friends sounds pretty fun. Going with Gomer and his son doesn’t sound too bad either.

Reminder: be present with your children.
