  • A window of dryness

7 eager gents arrived for what was promised to be a monsoon event at Heartbreak. Instead, it was a dry, rather civilized 38 degrees. Here’s what went down:

Mosey to the front of the school for some SSH, Russian Soldiers, Arm circles, Merkins, and hill billies.

Next, head to the parking lot for a BEAST. Burpees, copperhead squats, merkins, monkey humpers, SSH and ___Squats (can’t recall the name – Attila’s request).

Mosey to the back of the elementary school and break up into two teams. First team does catch me if you can with 10 merkins (2 rounds). The other team was sent for AMRAP pull ups and dips. Then the teams switched exercises.

Head to the driest part of Heartbreak, an uphill paved slope, for 5 minutes of Mary so we could catch our breath.

Then, the world’s most unorganized triple check. It was supposed to be wall sits, donkey kicks and running to the fence. What ensued was something else. After a few rounds, I put the triple check out of its misery, and we headed back to the flag for some final SSH to run out the clock.

Announcement: HH at Kindred Spirit on 2/1/21 to celebrate end of dry January.

Numberama, nameorama and Handshake took us out.

I wore my waterproof hiking shoes and brought a rain jacket after the hype on the pre-game texts. All for not. I believe we managed to stay completely dry above the ankles. See you next time.

  • Return to Twin Team

After being dormant for several months, four returned to Twin Team for a Friday beatdown. Here’s how it went.

Mosey to the bus loop. Helicopters, DQs, 10 SSHs + 10 Merkins x 3, squats.

Mosey over for a modified curb crawl. 15 jump squats, crawl to opposite curb, 20 2-count toe touches on the curb, crawl bear back. Repeat 3 more times.

Mosey to the football field. 1 member presses (what appeared to be) a hurdle made from 2x4s. 2nd member performs jerkins on the steeplechase hurdle. 3rd member curls a propane tank. 4th member was the timer running up to the top of the bleachers and back. Rotate and repeat 3 times.

Mosey to the edge of the parking lot. 20 dips on the crew boat trailer, 20 squats, 15 merkins, run around the parking lot. Repeat 3 times.

To the base of the hill. Crawl bear to the top 3 times.

Back to the flag. Modified ring of fire.

    That was it.

  • The Last Resort

Many familiar faces and a few missing usual suspects, 12 warriors showed up to brave the cold and dark of the gloom and here’s how it went down. With no one on the Q sheet, YHC was graciously penciled in to fill the spot.

    CoP

The PAX moseyed over to and circled in the loop near the Caroline Tower for some side-straddle hops, dead man hangs, arm circles, merkins, and LBC’s.

    The Thang:

    1. The Probe: PAX moseyed over to the field at Caroline Tower and we ran through an routine I like to refer to as Beast’s less painful but still uncomfortable cousin, the Probe.

Run downfield and back stopping at 25 yd, 50 yd,75 yd, and the end zone doing 7 5 reps of each exercise. (PAX immediately pushed back when 7 reps or 49 burpees was suggested for first round so we modified to 5 reps)

    Round 1: Burpees

    Round 2: Hand release merkins

    Rouind 3: Heels to heaven

    2. Touch a Tree

PAX grabbed the coupons and paired up for rounds of 10,8,6,4,2 touching trees and exercises:

Between tree runs were 10 reps of curls, standing presses, and abyss merkins…..on repeat. Once we got to 6 trees we switched to 5 reps each on repeat.

    3. Triple Check

PAX moseyed over near a short distance for a triple check with our coupons for 3 rounds of 3 exercises.

    1. Squat Thrusts holding coupon
    2. Flutter Kicks with coupon held up behind head.
    3. Pace car ran to the pull bars for 10 pull-ups.

PAX moseyed to the flag and finished up with a ring of fire. YHC took us out with a prayer. Grateful to be out there with such a great group of guys. God bless you all.

  • To Know that Honey is Sweet

10 of Richmond’s finest converged in the darkness at 0530. Here’s what transpired:

COP in the near Third Church lot: Floppy Arm Twists // Deadman hangs // DQs // Cherry Pickers // Imperial Walkers // Russian Soldiers // APDs // LBCs // Crabcakes // Tempo Merkins // Plank Jacks // Pickle Pounders // SSHs. Mosey to middle lot

DORA with a Coupon: 100 Alternating Block Merkins // 150 Squat Thrusters (switch to Squats halfway through) // 200 Block Windshield Wipers. Mosey to Field behind TES

TRIPLE CHECK: P1: Dips on the bench // P2: WW2s // P3: Karaoke to the Bars, 5 pull ups, Karaoke Back. Round 2: Karaoke. Round 3: High Knees.

COP: 5 Burpees, rest for 5 seconds, 5 Burpees, rest, 5 Burpees, rest, 5 Burpees.

Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out.

NMS: Hanshake challenged YHC to quote Jonathan Edwards in the Q today. So here we go:

“There is a difference between having an opinion that God is holy and gracious, and having a sense of the loveliness and beauty of that holiness and grace. There is a difference between having a rational judgment that honey is sweet, and having a sense of its sweetness. A man may have the former, that knows not how honey tastes; but a man can’t have the latter unless he has an idea of the taste of honey in his mind.”

Clearly Edwards was referring to how different a set of exercises looks on paper, as compared to actually performing them. YHC made this mistake in believing that the originally directed 200 Squat Thrusters was a good idea. Appreciate the patience of the Pax on the audible.

  • Breakin Bread and Watchin Bucs

YHC obviously didn’t think the Bucs were going to make the NFC Championship when he signed up for Breaking Bread. But people are more important than football so who cares?

WARMARAMA : grab 2 pounds of spaghetti, marina sauce, French bread loaf of garlic bread, and Caesar salad mix

THE THANG : make spaghetti, garlic bread and Caesar salad mix for 7 PAX while watching the Bucs on iPhone beat the Packers. FIRE THE CANNONS

Drive to Southside Health Center. Miss the turn. Do U Turn into abandoned gas station. Turn into wrong entrance for Southside Health Center and feel like a prick for making Barbara come down with her coworker to grab the food from my truck. But Barbara and coworker were very appreciative anyways.

On drive back, watch Bucs on iPhone at red lights and while YHC waits for a shrimp basket at Skrimp Shack.

    DONE

COT : Great experience delivering a meal to Medical Respite. Barbara is a great woman and ambassador for them. Super easy to work with.

  • wolves of tomahawk

    COP

stretches, SSHs, merkins, and a lot of mumble chatter about the recent election results

    THANG

pair off, one is a runner and the other is merkins. rinse and repeat but with dips then WWIIs. No herme Q is complete without MMA training. Parking lot front kicks, lunge front kicks and some lunge jabs. Martial arts done, head to light pole alley. A variety of upper, lower, and mid body exercises.

The troops killed it and we had some time for donkey kicks and wall sits. Half way around a Mary 615 am hit.

Name and numberama, Prayers, announcements (see Nancy’s post in slack)

Pleasure and a privilege to lead such a fine group of men.

    • Notes:
      • Kudos to Spit for completing the 12K

      • Remember to keep hydrating gents. Winter workouts can dehydrate you just as quickly as summer workouts.
  • Qinches

13 able bodied middle aged dudes (maybe upper middle age for several) showed up in the cold morning for a beat down. After being amazed at another high attendance morning, the Fireman Ed’s Q went like this:

COP: Two laps with some jogging, karaoke and Bernie Sanders. Honeydo was a casualty of the severely fast pace of the old folks and took a slight tumble. DQs, 3 punitive burpees, CP, ACs, Fred Mercuries

    Exercise 1: Start with 10 merkins, then 10 merkins, 20 WWIIs, then 10 merkins, 20 WWIIs, 30 jump squats, then 10 merkins, 20 WWIIs, 30 jump squats, 40 2 count mountain climbers, then add in 50 2 count flutters. Finish with 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10 of the above assigned exercise.

Mosey to drop off loop for a Tabata style routine with 45 seconds on and 15 seconds off of the following exercises:

Burpees, Heels to heaven, elbow plank, HRMs, LBCs, Plank jack, Carolina DDs, 6 inches (read as Qinches to one person), SSHs, wide grip merkins, APDs, Crab cakes, Suzanne Somers, helix squats. After completing the sets we moseyed around the school to the front.

Next exercise was 10 donkey kicks, then 15 DKs, then 20 DKs, then 25 DKs.

Mosey to parking lot. 20 American hammers, merkin ring of fire, 3 punitive burpees, DQs and CPs, sorry PAx no SSHs:(

Closed in prayer with no announcements (none of us could remember what was going on – the beauty of getting old).

Considering the difficulties that this world, nation and locality are experiencing it is good to have a group that can come together and do something positive. Let’s help someone else this week.

    God bless,

Fireman Ed (Robert Saleh’s older thinner brother).

  • A Discourse on Meritocracy and Bucket Filling

Two strong stallions braved the chilly (yet somehow 70 sunny) weather to get a pre and post Dogpile run/mosey. Kept the pace good enough to get excellent discussion on medieval systems of governance, books, habits, and what’s popular on YouTube in South Korea.

Early Bird was closed again so, no biscuits for you!

In every interaction, are you filling that person’s bucket? Or are you dipping from it?
