  • Swirly Ball

18 strong – tackled Mary this morning and here is how it went down.

COP: SSH, Helicopters, Windmills, IW’s, LBC’s APD’s, Flutter Kicks

Polarbears : Polar bear ( bear crawl every 5 steps Merkin) to the gate – 20 donkey kicks lunge back – plank. Repeat 3 times replace lunge with – Russian Solder – then Karaoke.

Swirly Ball : Break up into to teams – shirts and skins – 9 on 9 for some back yard football – Swirly style… Offense has 4 downs to make it to the end zone. Receivers are allowed to throw the ball in any direction after they catch it to keep the play alive before they are tagged. Defense has to do 5 merkins for every offensive completion – offense has to do 5 merkins for every dropped pass. Turn over on downs – 10 merkins – interception 10 merkins Touchdown defense has to do 20 partner leg toss.

Highlights : YHC has been wanting to bring out Swirly ball for a while just to change things up a bit. YHC always enjoys the Q’s that involve games or the pax playing around in the grass/mud like a bunch of boys. As the pax gathered this morning YHC was discussing with Bleeder that if there not enough guys showing up YHC would adjust the game plan. During the polarbears Bleeder announced to YHC (Hey dude you know we got 18) 18 was YHC’s minimum number for Swirly ball – therefore it was time to play ! We mossyed on over to the field and broke up into teams shirts and skins… The shirts had a slight advantage cause the field/ball was really wet… Anyway here are the highlights of the game: First Freaken play – Long Bomb – Marv to Grunt TD! and just like that the skins were doing partner leg toss… YHC thought wow my kid is fast and where the hell is the safety all at the same time – but whatever time to regroup … The game was tight for the rest of the time period – both teams moved the ball but no other TD’s were scored – Yep a 7-0 game ( we all did lot’s of running and merkins) . There are some outstanding plays/player awards YHC needs to report. The play of the game was the hail mary pass Marv to Grunt (however after further review the offense was off sides so the TD is called back – (Just Kidding)..  Pele gets the big hit of the game – Pele playing the middle line backer position  freaken leveled Ronnie – Ronnie made a hell of a catch but just as he did Pele put his ass on the ground – Boom! Viral ans Swiper get – best hands award 🙂 just kidding guys I know that ball was slippery Viral – Swiper your drop was pure fear and nobody blames you dude cause Bleeder was coming full speed and was inches away from trucking you – I have know idea how he was able to stop himself but am glad he did cause if he would have hit you at that speed you may have ended up on the tennis courts. Gomer Plyle and Rosie get the tip drill award (that ball YHC threw you two dudes kept alive by tipping it in the air for 5 freaken minutes .. incredible   (The play that almost was)   – YHC 15yard pass to Flipper – Flipdog catches turns and throws a beautiful pass that drops right over the left shoulder of Cottonmouth who was booking down the side line towards the end zone – and aaaaahhhhhh incomplete – son of a bi….&&**% Cottonmouth that would have tied the freaken game man …. Just kidding bro – good try – whatever ….

The time seemed to fly by today guys – it  was fun pretending to be Southpaw’s age out there today – And great job Southpaw – glad to have you on the skins team dude..  YHC always enjoys leading this great group of men and while this was in no way one of the typical Swirly beatdowns it was a hell of alot of fun ! You can bet YHC will be bringing this back !

Thanks to Bleeder for taking us out.

Circle K’s Father’s funeral today @ 3pm Our Lady of Lourdes

    See y’all in the gloom..

  • Are We Gruntled Yet?

21 warriors rose to meet the challenge of a new day.  According to legend it went a little something like this.

COP SSH, IW, LCB, FM X 20 IC, Merkin X 10 IC

Modified 4 Corners – Complete exercise at each corner on the way out and back, adding a corner each round.  Plank in between each round.

The exercises were the following: Corner 1 20 Decline Merkins at , Corner 2 20 WWII Situps, Corner 3 20 Dips, Corner 4 20 Burpees

    • Round 1 – Corner 1
    • Round 2 – Corner 1, Corner 2, Corner 1
    • Round 3 – Corner 1, Corner 2, Corner 3, Corner 2, Corner 1
    • Round 4 – Corner 1, Corner 2, Corner 3, Corner 4, Corner 3, Corner 2, Corner 1

Leg Ladder – Mosey to tennis courts.  This is a modified suicide workout.

    • Hop on 1 leg across 1 court and complete 10 (2 count) American Hammers, run back to start.
    • Hop on opposite leg across 2 courts and complete 10 (2 count) American Hammers, run back to start.
    • Hop on opposite leg across 3 courts and complete 10 (2 count) American Hammers, run back to start.
    • Hop on opposite leg across 4 courts and complete 10 (2 count) American Hammers, run back to start.

Bearly Alive – Partner up at soccer field.  One partner runs to the opposite end and the other partner starts to bear crawl.  Partner one touches the opposite side and runs back to partner.  Upon meeting back up complete 2 boo-yah merkins and switch.  Completion is when the length of the field has been bear crawled by the team.

Hermanos En Fuego – Partner up for a modified Ring of Fire, partners get on opposite sides of the circle.  All men in the plank position.  First team bear crawls to middle and completes 10 Boo Yah merkins the crawl bears back.  Next team goes until the entire squad has complete.

Numberama, Namerama, COT, Viral took us out.

Moleskin – On Tuesday afternoon YHC checked the Q sheet to see how much espresso and Ibuprofen for WDog. Much to the surprise of YHC 45MOM was sans Q.  The timing was great, as after a week at the beach YHC was ready to get back into action.  Big shout to Wilson  and Swiper for slaying it on the modified 4 Corners. Grunt and Scrappy put on a burpee clinic.  Hermanos En Fuego was well received.  Great to see the sons and dads team up and show the strength of their respective gene pools.  Kudos to Gumbo for jumping in with YHC for a second helping of Boo Yah merkins.

After careful consideration an adjustment has been made to our newest member of the tribe.  Cabbage Patch was a guest of Shake Down.  He introduced him as a gardner and the rest of the description was lost from there.  Several names were thrown out, before settling on Cabbage Patch.  One thing we do not do is settle.  The Commission on Special Naming Projects revisited the name.  The thought process went like this.  Gardner -> Red Hot Chili Peppers -> Crotch Sock -> Blood Sugar Sex Magic -> Sugar Sock.  Welcome Sugar Sock.

News – Please keep brother Circle K in your thoughts as his father has entered hospice.

    Be super,

    Hardywood

  • Chutes and Ladders

YHC is a little late getting the BB out because he was fasting before doctor’s appointment this morning, and after the event, the YHC was living up to his F3 name.  Now that all is well and YHC is properly hydrated, here’s what went down:

24 gamesmen entered what had to be one of the more pleasant glooms in while.  There was a nice chill in the air and light dew on the grass for the VQ.

Mosey to the blacktop for the COP

SSH x 10 x 2 – there was a lot of chatter (and laughter) from the PAX about the Q’s unique, yet stylish SSH form; Q saw others imitating it, which is taken as the highest form of flattery.

    Imperial Walkers x 10 x 2

    Hillbillies x 10 x 2

    Arm Circles

    Don Quixotes x 10 x 2Mosey to

Mosey to tree line at far end of field for a game of “Chutes & Ladders.”  PAX climbed the ladder by running to each tree to perform an exercise, increasing by one at each tree, until they reached the top of ladder at the 10th rung, and then they worked their way back down the ladder with a different exercise decreasing by one each rung.Ladder #1 – Jump Squats up the ladder, and 2-count mountain climbers down

Mosey to monkey bars for AMRAP in seven minutes of “LabRat-etta” Dora.  PAX partnered up for 3 merkins, 4 plank jacks, and 5 2-count American Hammers while the other partner ran to the pull-up bars and back.  Despite the number of ladders the PAX had already climbed, they crushed it!Mosey back to the flag for a quick Ring of Fire before Numberama and Name-o-rama.

Mosey back to the flag for a quick Ring of Fire before Numberama and Name-o-rama.

    Announcements –

TYA reminded everyone that the new F3RVA regional website is going live on July 1.  Be sure to comment on BB to help with your information transferring to new site.  Names will migrate, but will need to reset password. Special thanks to Splinter, Swiper, Swirly and others for their work on the new F3RVA site.

Viral also reminded everyone about F3 RVA July 4 Convergence; check the BB.

YHC wants to thank everyone for their support on his VQ event, including the clown car from the Southside; great to meet some new PAX.  YHC was pretty nervous, couldn’t eat the night before, had fitful night sleep and was up for good around 3:00am, but all was well once the chatter started during the COP.  Also, a huge shoutout to Hardywood who helped plan today’s AO, planted the flag, and was pretty damn persistent in EH-ing this VQ; thank goodness!

    Respectfully submitted,

    Cottonmouth

  • Next Stop, Lady’s Lingerie

19 men entered the gloom to start the day by working up a good step.  This is what went down:

Mosey to far corner of school grounds for quick disclaimer and straight into the workout.  10 merkins and run to corner at Cary.  10 LBCs.  Continue to run Cary around school grounds to next corner.  10 Caroline Dry Docks.  Continue run to Grove corner for 15 flutterkicks.

Mosey to blacktop near flags for The Escalator.  Floor 1 – run to fence, 5 merkins, run back.  Floor 2 – Floor 1 +Run backwards, 5 LBCs, Run backwards. Each successive floor you complete the floors below.  Floor 3 – Kareoke and 5 WWII situps, Floor 4 – Lunge, Floor 5 – Polar bear down and run back.

Mosey to corner of track for Progressive Four Corners. Corner 1 5 boxcutters, 10 merkins, 15 WWII situps, 20 flutterkicks.  Increase exercise count by 5 at each corner.

Mosey to tennis courts for 1 Suicide.

Mosey back to the flag.  Numberama, Namearama, TYA took us out with thoughts and prayers for F3 brother (Cheech, John Flanagan) in SC who was hit by car while running.

NMS – What better way to start a humid day, than with a beatdown that kept the PAX moving the entire time.  YHC selfishly wanted to test the legs this morning after last nights Hill Run, in an effort to prepare for the BRR.  Mission accomplished, as I am typing this, my legs are smoked.  The PAX can thank Cottonmouth for The Escalator returning.  Yesterday morning at WDOG, he was talking about his first F3 workout, where The Escalator was introduced to F3RVA.  He said he was smoked then, but he crushed it this morning.  Great work Cottonmouth.  When YHC started the beatdown without a COP, the PAX was confused with TYA asking about the warmups.  YHC response was 10 merkins and run a city block.  The PAX caught on quickly and we still made a big loop around the school grounds.  (Sort of like a COP.)  With the constant movement involved in today’s beatdown, not much mumblechatter from the PAX, but everybody crushed it this morning.

    Welcome to Flat Tire (FNG).

    Circle K

  • Beast Bound and Down, Loaded Up and Truckin

18 thought the rain was over and thought today would be a dry workout.  The humidity and this workout proved all wrong….

COP – SSH, IW, Don Quixote

Mosey back to the soccer field for the Beast:  Monkey Humpers, WWII Situps, Burpees, Copperhead Squats, Heels to Heaven, Scorpions

Onward to the tennis courts for the Triple Check: Plerkins and running the length of the court.

Back to School: Lindseys – 30 Donkey Kicks, Bear Crawl out to the track and 10 Mountain Climbers, Mosey back and repeat til the split is 10/30 (increase and decrease by 5).

Quick Mary – APDs, Dealers Choice for American Hammers (Marv), Merkins (Tu-Can)

Back to the flag where Circle K took us out.

    NMS:

The Beast kicked off with a little mumble chatter this morning, but by round 3 (burpees) silence came over the Pax.  (Note to self, open with burpees earlier in the Beast).

It also appears that Keymaster carries his dog in the back of his wagon.  Circle K is a big fan of large dogs.  K9 + Colbeer = Circle K nirvana.

We may be on to a K9 friendly concept Q.  Perhaps Labrat will run with that…

    Announcements:

    • C-Ville needs you! – Labrat is looking for members of the Pax to take a leadership role and help establish that AO.  See him for details.  It’s a great AO.  Not a single hill or anything resembling one.
    • New F3RVA website launching July 1.  See the new site for future backblasts and announcements.
    • Upchuck has a golf tournament on August 8 for a good cause.
    • VQ week is coming up soon!  Lot’s of open spots.  If you haven’t Q’ed, sign up before Corporate instates the VQ draft.
    • Lockjaw will Q the July HDHH.  It will be a proper send off for Toga.  More information to follow.

    Lockjaw

  • A Light Workout… Monkeying Around

21 warriors rejected the mediocrity of the fart sack and stormed into Mary Munford Elementary school for a light workout that went something like this…

Mosey to far field next near the tennis courts and circled up.

    COP (all IC)

52 SSHs, 10 merkins, 20 imperial walkers, 10 merkins, 10 mountain climbers, 10 merkins, 15 don quixotes, 10 merkins, arm circles, 10 merkins

    THANG

Mosey to the path next to the tennis courts. Partner up. Each partner sprinted in opposite directions around the field and returned to the starting location. Each partner then took off in opposite directions to do exercises at each tree (5 two count mountain climbers at one tree, 10 LBCs at the next tree). 10 booyah merkins when the partners met up along the way.

    Mosey to the tennis courts

5 merkins, bear crawl to the middle, 10 merkins, bear crawl to the corner, 15 merkins, bear crawl to the next corner, 20 merkins, lunge to the middle, 15 merkins, lunge to corner, 10 merkins, lunge to the starting location, 5 merkins.

Mosey to the monkey bars for monkey bars version of a ring of fire. Each person did the monkey bars both ways and returned to the circle while the PAX did 1 minute of dips followed by 1 minute of derkins (and rotated back and forth – one audible for heels to heaven before going back into dips and derkins).

    Mosey back to the SF… 52 SSHs…

Numberama, Namerama, Announcements. Spit took us out.

    NMS

The DaVille takeover continued this morning with YHC and Spit rolling in early to see the blue truck and a noble crew already camped out in the parking lot. YHC found out quickly that the ground at the AO can provide ample challenges for planting the SF. TYA observed from the car and later shared that he saw a lot of humor in the flag-planting scene. The SF did get planted and the festivities then began.

YHC expected some good trash talk as things got underway. Podcast 52 effectively poked the bear and fired up the DaVillians to bring some pain at the AOs all over the RVA. TYA let us all know that there was going to be a bunch of “light workouts” this week on the podcast (noted with a smile by YHC). He then applied the pressure right away this morning when he said, “What time do the workouts begin in Mechanicsville?” at 32 seconds beyond 5:30 am. YHC took the hint and we fired up the beatdown.

The mumble chatter was alive and well on the mosey over to the field. YHC adopted Abacus’ use of 52 SSHs to kick things off in honor of Podcast 52. YHC did not “pull a Carpenter” (another TYA quote) and go all the way to 100 but that may happen in the near future… YHC also used his approach to the merkin in the COP and brought a total of 100 merkins over the course of the warm-up. YHC heard someone say, “that was some serious pain in the circle of pain!” Goal achieved…

The PAX went to work on the sprint around the field and then the exercises at the trees. They carried the momentum into the tennis courts where the pain was increased by the bear crawls and merkins. Mumble chatter all but died at that point.

The real fun came when YHC led the PAX over to the monkey bars for a different version of “ring of fire.” The monkey bars provided a challenge but the non-stop dips & derkins brought more fun to the morning. YHC could hear the grumblings of muscle failure all around the circle. It was a glorious time shared by all.

It was an honor to lead this morning at 45MOM. YHC continues to realize the great opportunities that come with visiting other AOs. The new connections and reconnections are priceless. The new terrain is also a major plus. The DaVille Takeover has provided all of the above. YHC is looking forward to continuing the fun on Saturday morning at Dogpile!

    Announcements:

COP – SSH, Merkins, Box Cutters, Don Qs, Imperial Walkers.

Burpees up Westmoreland- Burpee at each tree up to Cary.

Head to field for AMRAP Laps- AMRAP of a named  exercise then run length of field. Exercises were Merkins, Heels to Heaven, CDDs, WWII situps, Merkins again, Flutterkicks, Tuck Jumps.

Burpees along Cary- Burpee for each tree. Lunge down Commonwealth to Tennis courts.

Go length of courts – Bear Crawl and Lunge, then Crab Walk and backwards run. then sprint the courts.

Triple Check- Plerkins and Run courts.

Mosey to Basketball courts for Mary- American Hammers, Box Cutters, Alabama Prom Dates.

Back to the flag. Viral took us out.

NMS – Great Pax this morning. Mumblechatter was reduced with TYA leaving after the COP. Hope you feel better.

Good to see some Kotters back at Mary including Pelosi 5.0 and fireman Ed. Viral was especially excited to have another Jets fan in the PAX, surely he will EH him into his local Jets-fan support group at some point.

Merkin count was roughly 145 or so, your mileage may vary. A good start for the June monthly challenge.

The Plerkins were a hit as always. They really are the perfect Triple Check pairing.

Announcements – Fudd’s Party, F3 Cville. BRR is 3 months away.

This is YHC’S 2nd 45Mom Q. Wanted to go back to where it all started for YHC 2 years ago this week. Here’s to many more with this great group of men.

    NMS

While TYA has brainwashed us into believing that it is perpetually sunny and 70 in F3RVA, there’s always a little excitement and apprehension driving to a workout in the middle of any ridiculously stupid weather. Your Humble Correspondent drove through a monsoon to get to 45MOM and wondered how many people were as stupid as he? These are the sorts of workouts that YHC always remembers most … the cold ones, the snowy ones, the slushy ones, the torrentially soggy ones … no one remembers a Beast in 55 degree weather on a clear fall morning. These are the sorts of workouts that make us the men we are striving to be … well done all!

Upon arrival, the rain was coming down in slow but very fat drops and no one was anxious to get out of their car. As YHC went to plant the shovel flag, YHC walked by Sabotage in The Brooklyn Beamer (probably listening to Flute Loop) and he rolled his window down and asked “Hey yo, we’re all just going to Denny’s … … right?” YHC won’t say he didn’t think about it …

The rain really started pounding down and it was time to mosey. There was lots of mumblechatter from the PAX about not using the pavilion for the COP and the rain intensified. Doesn’t the PAX know that such complaints always seal their doom? Like any good Q, YHC then decided to ensure maximum soakage by making sure we had time for some work on our six in the COP and some super soggy Hand Release ‘Mericans.  Dear PAX, YHC will always cherish your howls as rain lashed down during LBCs. Later on, the Tunnel Puddle of Love was just icing on the cake, although Bleeder pointed out he probably would have done it first just to get everyone to hate him. Not sure who did it during the PoL but someone(Swirly? Bleeder? Grunt?) was doing their best to remove a whole arch of the tunnel by forklifting it from underneath. YHC didn’t see … did it work?

The rain started letting up during during the Double Dora, but since the AO is so flat, the standing water all over was amazing, huge sections of the running track turned into lakes, especially the side by Commonwealth Street. YHC is pretty sure TwoCan was ready to get out his water skis on our laps around the track.

Other than YHC chirping “Don’t forget to bring a towel!!” during Triple-Check, YHC didn’t get to hear much mumblechatter so please call it out in the comments. Partially it was because of the rain, partially because YHC took some prescription cough medicine before arriving and partially because YHC blocked out Toga questioning YHC’s virility during “six inches.” It’s okay because Toga is just getting in as much mockery as he can before moving The Togas to Nashville at the end of this summer. Be sure to give Mr. Grumpy your best barbs before he leaves us to get the Nashville PAX in line with Corporate’s high standards.

    Great job everyone! Viral Out.

  • Righty Tighty / Lefty Loosey

Twenty-two gentlemen and scholars showed up on an all together pleasant morning for 45 Minutes of Mary on 18 May.  It was the two year anniversary of Bleeder inviting MARV to F3, so MARV took the occasion to Q his second ever boot camp style work out (there’s been quite a few Q’d runs).  A quick shout out to Loose Goose, who was missed today, and who led my first Q two short years ago.

    THE THANG

We live in a right-handed world.  Scissors, most golf club sets, clippers for any type of tree trimming, they are all made for those that are right handed.

As a card carrying member of the proud to be left-handed party, I’ve heard my fair share leftist jokes…my favorite being “hey, you are standing on the wrong side of the ball” when I’m on the first tee about to enjoy a round of golf.  Yeah, really funny.  I’ve never heard that one before.

For that reason, this morning’s Q went in reverse as we circled up in the normal spot located in the northwest corner of Mary Munford’s Elementary School.

Yes, but instead of the normal side straddle hops, Don Quixote’s and LBCs and the like, as lefties are sometimes known to do, we went backwards.

PAX ran to the shovel flag (or where the shovel flag normally would stand…I guess I need to get myself a shovel flag) and immediately did…

    21 American Hammers
    21 Freddie Mercuries
    21 Alabama Prom Dates
Spelled out with our legs the names (in ALL CAPS) the last three VCU Head Coaches (Shaka Smart, Will Wade and Mike Rhoades)
Ring of Fire…running in place and knocking out three mercans on “Go”. 22 times around the circle…so a total of 66 mercans to start, for those keeping score at home.

Now may be as good of time as ever…there’s really no significance to the number 21…I was somewhat of a Roger Clemens fan growing up, but only to the extent that anyone else that followed baseball in the mid 80s was. I think I’ve written before that I was #42…21 is half of that…maybe next year I’ll have the stones to do 42 American Hammers to start.

    On with THE THANG…

My freshman year, we heard legendary stories about the seniors (who had just graduated) getting caught after curfew one year on a road trip. The Monday that they returned from the three game series they had to run 20 minutes of “Bat Poles” which involved running with a weighted bat over their heads from foul pole to foul pole. In the spirit of those guys, and my left-handedness, whenever the PAX moseyed or ran, we did so with our hands in the air as if we were carrying those hated weighted bats. This was fun for about :21.

Following the beginning Ring of Fire we moseyed (with imaginary bats in full tow) to do four corners. Northeast corner was five pullups, northwest corner was 10 dips (either on the bar or on the ground), southwest corner was 10 mercans, southeast corner was 10 leg pull ups. We would run from each station with our arms above our head.

The conclusion of Four Corners led us to the west side of the tennis courts where we proceeded to do a set of agilitities, running the width of the four courts. Halfway through the set, both on the way and way back, we paused to do an exercise.

First set– Butt Kicks / 3 burpees
Next set — Russian soldiers / 10 monkey humpers
Final Set — Karaoke / holding your leg up in baseball balance position for 10 seconds

This time seemed as good as any to do a sprint back and forth on the width of the courts. We learned that one of the reasons UVA Baseball went 2-22 in the ACC in 1994 was because the position players had to run 18 60 yard sprints during the course of a game and they were exhausted.

Next up was something relatively new…manual resistance arm workouts. PAX paired up and did the following with their partner adding manual resistance…

Side Arm raises with resistance on the way up and down
Front Arm raises with resistance on the way up and down
    Curls

When asked after the Q what Corporate thought of the manual resistance exercises, corporate replied “yeah, that stuff is really good for toning the muscles.”

This will be the last time we do manual resistance for awhile, I’m thinking.

The PAX picked up their invisible sand bats and ran back to the northeast corner for the “left-handed ring of fire”…as we finished with…

    15 Monkey Humpers
    15 Donald Quixotes

    MOLESKIN

As confirmed by Swirly, Mary has never been the setting of an Old Glory.  OG is simple yet effective.  YHC remembered Flashdance’s mini OG VQ and how challenging the shorter distance between exercises proved to be.  For an additional bit of fun, YHC thought the PAX might be motivated by the opportunity to earn a reward by killing (passing) TYA.  YHC could lie and say it was spontaneous, but the selection of TYA as the big game of the day was premeditated after hearing last week’s Colonial 70 podcast.  The glowing yellow shirt worn by TYA further confirmed YHC’s selection and made TYA a fairly easy target like Cecil the Lion tied to a tree.  For much of the workout though, TYA was able to evade the stalking PAX. However, in the end Flipper, SAAB, and a few others bagged their trophy.  For the rest of the PAX no participation trophy, just gloom. Sorry, YHC is no millennial and doesn’t roll like that.  Great to meet a couple of the newer members of the PAX and to see a few guys YHC hasn’t seen in a while.  As always, thanks for the opportunity to lead.
