  • Ropes and Ladders

10 redwoods posted for another edition of Batteau. Summer is back in RVA, and we got right to it.

Mosey to field near the stone house for warmup COP: SSH, Don Quixote, Russian soldiers, hillbillies, imperial walkers, Spider Man twist, scorpion twist.  Following this, the merkin timer was in the house for 10 merkins every five minutes (regular, close grip, wide grip, Bruce Lee, regular…).

Mosey to the steps North of the circle for merkin Jacob’s Ladder to seven.  Mosey back to field for seven ascending heals to heaven rolling to squat jumps (1 leg raise to 1 jump squat, 1-2, 1-3…).

Mosey to parking circle for a game of “Who can skip rope?”  One member of the PAX jumps to 100 while the PAX completes an exercise.  Some of the exercises chosen: Capt Thor, merkins, LBC, crab cakes, lunges, some other stuff…

Mosey back to field for Death by Burpee= start at 5 burpees and go up by one each minute.  The winners made it to 15.

Mosey back to flag for COT and Cottonmouth took us out.

NMM:  There were lots of outstanding performances in what was truly a random collection of COPs.  Do you ever go to a buffet where everything looks good but nothing really goes together?  You end up walking away with pizza, smoked salmon and banana pudding.  YHC had been storing up some of these little jewels (see Death by Burpee), but then there was the jump rope laying beside the shovel flag at 0500.  Why not involve that somehow?

Honey Do crushed Jacob’s Ladder for team one, and Wheelbarrow never vacated the lead for team two.  Someone clearly found the old East German medicine cabinet.  There was a total lack of mumble chatter or derision from the heals to heaven with jumps, but everybody got to be Chatty Kathy when the jump rope came out.  YHC really thought it was going to be tough for the PAX to try and pair the right exercise with the speed of the jumper.  It turns out that everyone could pretty much manage 100 in short order.  Slurpee even got cocky and called for burpees, but YHC vetoed him because of what was coming next.

Death by Burpee did not disappoint.  Cottonmouth was surprised to learn we were ascending and not descending when the PAX was reminded that they were on 9.  We also started at five because there are few things worse than a PAX standing around with nothing to do and little to talk about (If you’ve been to a Mechanicsville workout, you know what that’s like.).  It was also good to keep good form until about nine, and then it was all sprawling and flopping to get done and catch your breath before you’re back at it.  Swirly definitely made it to 15 with no time to spare, and Flipper may have made it under the wire as well.  Strong Work!

    Stay Classy,

    Toga

Mosey to the bottom of some steps in this giganic A/O with so many TYA toys that one can spend a week at the A/O and still not cover all the possibilities.

    THANG

    Mosey to the pond:

    Lunge Run

Partner up, with a ghost to join the Partner Bs

Partner A runs up to the stairs, while partner B lunges up the hill. Once Partner A comes back down the hill to Partner B, Partner B runs up the hill and Partner A begins his lunges up the hill. Repeat till both reach the top.

    Ping – Pong

Go to the stone wall across from the pavilion.  Two (1 and 2) at Point A, Two (3 and 4) at Point B (20 yrds down) and One (5) at Point C (20 more yrds down). PAX 1 goes from point A to point B backwards – relieves PAX 3 and starts to do Merkns. PAX 2 does step ups, PAX 3 does Merkins till PAX 1 gets to point B, then he goes backwards to Point C – backwards, and does step-ups there.  PAX 5 does step ups till PAX 3 got to Point C then he goes to Point B bacwards. PAX 4, who has been doing Merkins the whole time, goes to Point A backwards. PAX 2, who has been doing step ups the whole time, goes to Point B backwards. PAX 1 then continues to point C…

Once 400 Merkins was completed, we then wrapped up and moseyed over to a field with picnic tables.

    Indian Picnic Table Run

PAX takes the back picnic table and carry it to the front of the other two tables. PAX then traverse on top of the picnic tables to the beginning of the picnic tables. That PAX then carry together this table to the front this line of picnic tables and repeat the process.

Once enough time was spent on this Indian Picnic Table Run the PAX traveled back to the flag via the easy route.

    FAV 5

Each PAX member called out and led the PAX in 5 of their favorite choice of pain

    • Abacus – – Hillbillies
    • Flipper – – Heels to Heaven
    • Slurpee – – Merkins
    • The Carpenter – – 2 Count American Hammers

    1 Minute Clock of Merkins

    COT/Namorama

    NMS

It has been a long time since this YHC was anxious before he went to bed. But this Q caused a fair amount of anxious wonder in the YHC. No need for a clock today as YHC woke up 2 minutes before his alarm was scheduled to go off and tickle the M out of her sleep.  Gently and like a mouse YHC slithered out of the room without any sound or ripples in the air allowing M to feast in the world of dreams. Mission 1 accomplished.

YHC, having scouted out the north side of the AO, arrived early to scout the north side of the AO. Impressed by the vast array of toys across this fruited plane, YHC smiled as the sun dotted the air with more and more light.  After his brief scout of the AO, YHC came back and saw 3 regulars discussing mundane topics around Old Glory.  A smile leaped on YHC face as The Carp got out of his car and approached the chatter around Old Glory.  Talk of other potential PAX members raged as the time to start approached. No such luck, many a member embraced the lure of the fartsack this fine Monday morning.

Da’Ville counting started in earnest as we began with some SSHs.  However, Qing afford little opportunity for YHC to ensure a boisterous beginning of Da’Ville counting south of the River.  All is good, as each counting method still gets us to what we want.

The hill leading to the pond was impressively long and provided a good grade in two separate places. The legs enjoyed the work with the quadriceps enjoying most of the fun.  Chatter was strong on the lunge cycle to deny the pain a place at the table.  However, quietness ruled the air as the PAX worked their way up the hill in a run/jog/walk leg of the effort.

Ping – Pong was a crazy mess as the PAX had only 5 versus 6 or more.  We sorted out some rhythm by the end, but it wasn’t pretty. Yet pretty tough.

Indian Picnic table run was a great exercise as it worked many different muscle groups and required coordination and team work.  At the end it was discussed how pleasurable it would be to race each other getting a set a picnic tables across a field.

  • Progressive Day

Four strong Batteau regulars allowed for a guest Q on a cool but humid Monday morning.  The PAX convened, dodged a few raindrops then went along our merry way.  Mosey to the bottom of the bowl for a beatdown that went something like this:

    COP
Arm circles (10 small, 5 large).  Forward and backward.
    Merkins
    Copperhead Squats
    LBCs
    Hug and Loves

    The Thang
Mosey back up the north side of the bowl to the lone tree on the west end of the string of 6 trees.  Start a progressive tree line.  Run to the first tree and complete merkins.  Run back to the lone tree, then run to the second tree for squats, stopping at the first tree for more merkins.  Run back to the lone tree then run to the third tree for dry docks, stopping at the first tree for merkins and the second tree for squats.  See how this works?  Exercises were merkins, squats, dry docks, lunges, burpees, monkey humpers.  Progress through all 6 trees.

Slow saunter down to the bottom of the bowl and face towards Forest Hill for a progressive variation of touch a tree.  From the bottom of the hill, run up and touch a tree.  Run back to the bottom for 20 dips.  Second iteration, run up and touch the same tree, this time complete 10 merkins at the first tree then run back down to the bottom.  Run up and touch a second tree then run to the bottom for 20 more dips.  Third iteration, run up to the first tree for 10 merkins, back down then up to the second tree for 10 WWII, back down then up to a third tree and back down for 20 dips.  See how this works?  We completed 4 rounds/trees with merkins, WWII, monkey humpers, burpees.

One foot in front of the other up the hill to the miniature playground with an obscene amount of mulch.  Quick station work with 5 pull ups, WWII and derkins with feet up on the swing.

Jog to the last tennis court for mary.  25x LBCs, American Hammer, Flutter Kicks, Freddy Mercuries.

Back to the shovel flag for COT.

    Moleskin
YHC was thankful for the opportunity to lead at Batteau today.  Being not extremely familiar with the AO, YHC stayed relatively close to home.  The progressive tree line was awesome, except that the run back to the lone tree was slightly uphill.  BT loves to hump the monkey.

The progressive theme for the day was unplanned until we reached the touch a tree section.  Everyone pursued the tree the furthest up the hill, expecting the rule that you can’t touch the same tree twice.  Why not touch that tree every damn time?  EF Hutton thought he was getting off easy.

Who would have thought that the playground could be so diabolical?  Swirly called it correctly stating “you know derkins suck when you look forward to pull-ups”.  Way to power through it boys.

Mary was a refreshing end to the workout where everyone loves to do the hammer, especially Bleeder.  I bet he has some parachute pants he could pull out for an upcoming workout.  The imprint of the punisher on the tennis court after mary was a reminder of how far we pushed ourselves today.

The progressiveness of the workout was keenly demonstrated when YHC invited the PAX to go out in the world and be better wives.  Apologies, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Monday morning at Batteau never fails to infuse the week with solid energy.  With sunny and 70 weather and a red-sun rise, Batteau delivered again.

YHC enjoyed catching up with Wedding Singer on the loop run.  Great to see you out there for a boot camp.

YHC apologizes to Flipper.  Traditionally, F3 has been a place where most PAX try to leave work behind.  YHC fears that the popping of his back during reverse crunches may have been taken as a non-verbal solicitation of services. YHC will ask his back to crack quietly in the future.

Good luck to Swirly’s 2.0s in their softball game this week – way to make it to the state tournament.

One final note: Swirly smoked the 3 laps around the lake – well done.  Nice to see you back at or close to full strength.

    MOLESKIN

YHC arrived to see EF Hutton pulling his shovel flag from the trunk of his car, YHC asked if he had signed up in the late hours of Sunday evening. Hutton responded “no,” but he had a few thoughts on the ride in this morning. Wheel Barrow pulled in behind Hutton, his name was not on the Q sheet either.

Flipper was just a few minutes late, with his keen sense of hearing, he determined where a deer was eating leaves, and where a squirrel was playing with it’s nuts and where 5 PAX members were counting in cadence on the tennis courts. Sitting in Silence, if you are a LIFO is the best thing to do to help figure out where the PAX is located; unless of course, there is a Sugar Shack nearby.

Swirly determined that the summer fashion selection he had picked out for Batteau this am would need to be augmented by some thicker clothing; however, running to the AO makes everyday start Sunny and 70!

AS the PAX saw the city employees drive into Forest Hill Park, everyone considered how the compensation and severance package for the City must be pretty good; which inclined Hardywood to suggest a new Mayor Candidate for 2020. A F3RVA Coup d’état for the city of Richmond:

    When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made.
    All the world wonder’d.
    Honor the charge they made.
    Honor the Light Brigade.
    The Noble Six Hundred.

Swirly and YHC were first to arrive at the AO, and at 0530, YHC and Swirly were still the only two people at the AO, Swiper arrived just as the SSH were commencing, Flipper was not too far behind him.

As the PAX rolled through our pain and torment this morning, YHC could not remember Swiper’s name, to the point when YHC handed the Hot Potato off to him, YHC had to ask his F3 name; at which point YHC said, “it’s all yours,” at which point Swiper continued to tell me his real name, and the remains of his life story; YHC had to be slightly more clear. “The PAX is now going to do whatever you tell us to do.” Swiper made the decision to run back towards the Flag, so he had time to contemplate what brutal exercises he could inflict on THE PAX. Lock Jaw, Swiper may need a lesson from you on how to count.

As the PAX wrapped up after an excellent take out from Flipper, Swiper was sharing a story of how he was much more of a runner, which was clearly demonstrated during the Dirty McDeuce, Swiper’s wife had commented that his arm wrestling ability was much better now that part of his workout regime included upper body exercises; keep getting after it Swiper.

    Bleeder Out.

    Moleskin-

great job today guys. Thought the numbers might be low due to the weather on a Monday, YHC was happy to see ol’ trusty Swirly kicking around the AO as usual so it wouldn’t be a solo job. Good way to start the week, nothing too flashy, just get the blood flowing after the weekend.

Congrats to the Blue Ridge runners, way to go. Sounds like quite the course. YHC also ran a half on Saturday, half a 10K. It was glorious.

With no one signing up for the Batteau Q this am, YHC rolled with a Hot Potato Q. Always interesting to see what is going to happen when that is announced, All Q’s did a great job beating the pollen infested snot out of the PAX during our 45 minutes.

Post Workout, with the sun rising over the trees, Hardywood discussed the finer points of Thomas Jefferson’s literary genius; with all of Thomas Jefferson Accomplishments and Authorship of many documents; Hardywood found it interesting that TJ only wrote one book: Notes in the State of Virginia. a Footnote in the book was that the weather in the spring is always Sunny & 70.

Mosey back to where the Shovel Flag should have been. Numberama/Namerama….COT YHC took us out.

Moleskin:  Many of you know that YHC has been involved this year in the Dog Show arena, from the many clips YHC has received from Best in Show he is sure you are aware.  I am happy to announce the return of the Top Dog.  Swirly probably after much bartering and probably fibbing convinced his Ortho to let him back out. Not sure who has Swirly’s file but that goes in it, way to battle brother. This was a last minute Q for sure as I checked the Q sheet at 5:30pm yesterday and it  was open.  So theme was last minute idea. (throw me a bone)

Tails were wagging over the thought of bear crawling up that damn hill. YHC considered the shock training collar but only a few barks and the pax went after it. Really proud of Cotton Mouth, this was not a beatdown for the faint at heart and he killed it.

As always it was a pleasure to lead today!! Just Remember; Why does a dog lick himself?  Because he can!!!
