  • 21 Honored 21

Twenty-one brothers, including Hardwood (more on this in a minute) posted to honor the 21 year anniversary of those who gave their lives in the shooting at the Appalachian School of Law. (January 16, 2002). It was a moment I will never forget, and these are three people I will aways remember.

Each year, I lead this Q for entirely selfish reasons. It is annual cleanse, of sorts. We start off by taking a knee and learning about Angela Dales, Thomas Blackwell and Dean Anthony Sutin. After that, we run a Silent Mile. For me, I reflect on Angela, Tom, Dean Sutin and their families. For the other PAX, I invite them to reflect as they see fit. A mile in silence is powerful, likely more powerful than it sounds. For me, it is one of the most meaningful experiences each year.

After the mile, silence is broken. Today we embarked on a modified Hardway. On the field was a Compound BEAST. SSHs / Carolina Dry Docks / Jump Squats / LBCs / Imperial Walkers / Burpees. In order, each round.

Touch-A-Tree: Three speed rounds of 7 / 5 / 3 while partner held coupon plank.

    BTTF

Announcements: The Crucible needs continued support and will be moving to The Healing Place, as they embark on their annual Monument Avenue 10k training. See Shakedown for more details.

NMS: Today was a very important day for me, but it really started last night. I received numerous calls and texts from brothers who could not be there today. In combination with who did post today, it means the world to me. I could say you all have no idea how much this means to me, but the great thing about my brothers in F3RVA is that each of you truly does know and understand how much this means to me. Today does not happen without each of you beside me, with me and behind me. The support you provide is immeasurable.

Special shoutout to Hardywood who is in D.C. for his kids climbing competition, but who ran for one hour, from 6-7, all around D.C. in honor of today. Goose bumps, brother. Goose bumps.

After today’s workout, I received a text from one of you who has a daily devotional. Today’s devotional happed to be Psalm 55, which starts: Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught at the voice of the enemy, at the stares of the wicked; for they bring down suffering upon me and revile me in their anger. Wow! How poignant is that?! Now, verse 22: Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.

It is truly amazing how God works. Last year, our workout was in the shape of a heart. This year, one of our brothers has a daily devotional exactly on point. The power is real and undeniable.

Try to live each day to the fullest, as all our days our numbered. Try to remember Angela, Tom and Dean Sutin, as examples of who to live for. People who made the ultimate sacrifice. Find those people who drive you to thrive.

This morning was perfect. I could not have asked for anything more.

  • Swirly-esque 8 Years

16 gloom warriors showed up at the AO to see what Swirly had in mind to celebrate 8 years of F3. Due to Swirly coming down with Covid, Swirly made a call to the bullpen and YHC took the Q. According to the deer at the edge of the woods that watched the entire workout, this might be what transpired:

Mosey to the first circle for the following: Invisible Jumpropes, DQs, Merkins and LBCs.

Mosey to the poles beside the road. Hold six inches while the first PAX perform Heels to Heaven Native American style until all poles were used. Others exercises performed included Freddie Mercury’s and LBCs.

Mosey to Amphitherater for Self Destruction. 1st step=1 vup, 1 SSH and 1 merkin. 2nd step increase number of reps to 2 and so forth all the way to the top of amphitheater.

Mosey to Rusty Cage and perform 1 pullup, run to fire hydrant for 1 burpee. (Say hello to the deer) Repeat increasing the number of reps of each exercise. YHC got to 8 reps and audibled to get to some more of Swirly’s favorites.

Numbers / Names Rosie took us out

    NMS:

Welcome to our newest vict…., I mean FNG now named Arnold because his kids (F3 names) are Hons & Fronz.

Congrats to EF Hutton and Oyster for making it to 300+ AO’s this year, well done

YHC had set two goals for this year, 100 Merkins a day for the year (made it to March) and 100 Q’s. Today was the end of YHC’s Q count with todays Q being 100. Thanks to all the brothers that have showed up (like a Doozy Q or not) you keep coming back. YHC’s goals for next year are going to be run, run, run Marathon (by November) a couple Triathlons and connect with Mudslide on at least one Spartan race.

Set a Goal: If you make it great, if you don’t try again or try something different. This group of guys should be there to support you in achieving your goal and to encourage you if you don’t.

  • Who can bust a nut in 8 degrees temps?

Eight eager PAX were ready to get going early to get the blood flowing on Christmas Eve, with the PAX count equal to the temperature of 8 degrees at the start. We did:

COP: SSH, IPs, Hillbillies, Don Qs, then Boomer Pyle joined us late so 10 burpees.

Down to the amphitheater for a Dora 123: 100 Merkins, 200 Reverse Crunches, 300 Jump Squats while other PAX runs to top and back. Mosey over to Rusty Cage. 5 rounds of 6 pullups & 10 WWIIs. Then partner up for 4 rounds of 7 Jerkins.

Mosey over to bottom of Rugby and partner up again. Alternate bear crawl up hill to top while other partner runs ahead and back. Finish up on Burpee road with 1 burpee per light way out then 2 burpees on the way back. Mosey back to frozen flag for few seconds of mary then done. YHC took us out.

NMS: Way for the PAX to answer the bell on a challenging morning when the pull of the fartsack was strong. This is the coldest post YHC has done in 7 years doing F3 but the PAX pushed hard and we stayed warm. Respect to Mudslide for the double dip!

BB title goes to the unnamed PAX who loudly busted a nut while we were at the Rusty Cage. Only those who post know. Mr Rogers proved his commitment to the SOP-Life by joining YHC in shorts. Only the last few minutes did we regret this decision. Boomer Pyle took 10 minutes to get his Jitterbug to get a picture to memorialize the fun we had. Coffee at Libby Market was a blast as always. Enjoy the day and Christmas tomorrow and take a moment to reflect on the great gift we have of F3RVA!

    Moleskin:

The Q energy was strong this morning boys. YHC was coming in hot this morning and was worried he would lose the Q. With that we started about .30 early and somehow lost Hitchhiker who was LIFO but he found us on the bridge. We covered a bit of ground today and earned about 3.5miles (A bit more if you did Breakfast club). I knew Mudslide was crossing the river and paying some tolls for his first visit to Dogpile. I wanted to show him some of the AO but left plenty for the next visit. Welcome (FNG) Falkor, who was HL by Probation and Mr. Rogers.

2nd F at Libby Market was much needed as always. According to Gomer, stop looking at the minimums and go for the Maximums.

    Announcements:
See Slack. A lot of events coming up:
Sunday – An evening with Honeydo. Bring the Fam to Fudds
Tuesday – 12 days of Christmas. No PTO , SL will be honored for this day.
Wednesday – HDHH at Final Gravity
Saturday – The Bridge – plenty of room in Fudds car unless YHC is going (???)

  • It’s Dogpile……you need to lock your car.

10 fairly tough, middle aged dudes fought off the pull of the fartsack to post at RVA’s finest AO for a Fudd inspired beatdown. Here’s what transpired, more or less…..

Plant the flag and mosey to the field in front of the Carillon. Line up on the baseline and start jogging north at a slow pace….switch to buttkickers, high knees, karaoke facing East then West, then Bernie Sanders, then stop about 3/4 of the way down. Turn around and start lunging back, after a while face east and start lunging sideways back and forth while facing east, then west, then east, then skip back towards the Carillon to the baseline where we circled up for COP:

SSH’s, Merkins, WW2’s, DQ’s, arm circles, Imperial Walkers, Hillbillies

Mosey to the Rusty Cage, but stop halfway around and either plank or follow Fudd while he runs back to his vehicle because he forgot to lock it. Fudd and gang return, pick up the plankers, and then mosey to the Cage for 11’s……pullups and WW2 situps next to the 2 trees that are on the way to the fire hydrant.

Mosey to the wooden stage behind the Carillon to retrieve coupons, then mosey to the amphitheater for some block work:

    • Each PAX ascends the amphitheater steps, stopping to do 1 manmaker (blockee with an overhead press at the end) at each level on the way up. Stop at the top level and plank for the 6
    • Descend and do 2 squats with block on every level. Plank at bottom for 6.
    • Ascend and do 3 block curls on every level, Plank at top for 6.
    • Descend and do 4 block swings on every level……do flutter kicks while waiting for the 6.

Take the blocks back to their home under the stage. Mosey to the fishbowl, Crawl bear down the hill, do 20 merkins OYO at the bottom, then bear crawl up the other side. Mosey back to the flag for Mary:

    • Freddie Mercuries, Hello Dollies, Flutter Kicks, LBC’s, Crunchy Frogs, finish with 2 rounds of Supermans

Numberama, Namerama, Announcements, Prayer Concerns, YHC took us out.

    NMS

Mumblechatter was fairly high today which is fairly standard with a Fudd Q. Perhaps the 3 year hiatus in CO has folks wondering if Fudd remembers how to Q? When we started the warmup by running down the field, the PAX were highly skeptical as COP had not been accomplished yet. Equilibrium was restored to the world when YHC finally finished that evolution and declared that COP would take place and promptly started the SSH’s………I guess you can’t have a proper beatdown in F3RVA without SSH’s in the COP. Who knew?

The PAX were quite vocal with their moral support of YHC at other times today……they were very appreciative when planking while YHC mosied back to his car to lock it, and were also very happy that YHC searched so earnestly under the stage for the blocks (they had been moved to a different corner).

TClaps to Wilson, Honeymoon, and Oyster for making the trip across the river. Wilson posted while hoping that we wouldn’t run too much. He lucked out today as Fudd is trying to rest his leg a bit from the PT work he’s been doing as part of his recovery from the stress fracture. It was great to have Bleeder out and glad to see he’s on the mend somewhat from his various ailments. TClaps as well to EF Hutton for doing the Breakfast Club mosey Lone Ranger style. Circle K was kind enough to stop by COT while on a hike with his dog and Gomer Pyle joined us for coffeeteria at Libby Market as he is nursing a torn miniscus.

    Announcements:

Dec. 18th – An evening with Honeydo at Fudd’s house (9605 Gaslight Pl)

Dec. 24th – TYA Q at the Bridge. Several Clown cars are being planned.

    Prayer concerns:

Kudzu’s (Fudd’s son) friend Emily is recovering from surgery

Remember and be in prayer for those that are hurting this holiday season, those that are depressed, and those battling addiction. The holidays can be a hard time for many folks.

Great job today fellas! It was an honor and privelege to lead, as always.

    Never stop chasing the wabbit!

    Fudd

  • Magnum PI Day 2022 – Building Bridges

27 guys, including two FNGs posted for the 2022 version of Magnum PI Day. There was some overtime (maybe some false advertising – under investigation), several sweet staches, some great Hawaiian shirts, and lots of great energy and fellowship. This episode transpired like this:

COP 2 – here’s your broga – mosey up the long road to the parking area at the end of the field for COP – Hillbillies, Imperial Walkers, Alternating Shoulder Taps, Plank, Ankle Taps.

    • Prayers for Bootleg and his family taking care of his FIL.
    • Continued prayers for all those dealing with illness, injuries and obstacles

NMS – Jay spoke to us a bit about The Bridge and their ministry. It is great work. Jay’s words were inspiring. Most of all, I thought his point about the importance of us giving our time and showing the guys at The Bridge (and everyone that we come in contact with) that we care about them is invaluable. Spreading our energy and positivity is infectious and the impacts ripple tremendously – more than financial donations ever can. And, as Jay mentioned, making it a habit is key and that is what F3 instills. I am so proud to be a part of this group. You men are Awesome.

Huge thanks to everyone who participated in this effort and Magnum PI Day. Special thanks to Vinny and Kubota for their energy and leadership. Well done men!

    No More Gumbo For You!

Great to have Emoji back in town too. Wonderful way to start any day, but extra special to start my birthday with this fine group of men and some wonderful fellowship and motivation…and a small helping of fitness. So grateful and thankful for all of you and this group. Keep doing good work!

No More Gumbo For You! and, GEAUX TIGERS!!

  • Pre-Blast – Return of the Frozen Triangle

Nothing on the calendar in January? Looking for an excuse to hit some new AOs? Never participated in a homegrown F3RVA CSAUP? Want a morning of 1st and 2nd F wrapped into one? We’ve got the answer to all of these questions and more, the Frozen Triangle.

The cold weather is now upon us and with it brings the return of RVA’s own CSAUP, the Frozen Triangle. January 21, 2023, 6am at Dogpile, we all know there is nothing else going on at that time of day on a Saturday in mid-January. Go ahead and put it on your family shared calendar, set aside your bag balm and chafe free shorts (SOP), tell your M you’ll be back late, your kids they’re on their own for breakfast, plan to let your dog out before you go because you are not going to want to miss this one.

We’ll travel between three (Triangle) AOs by your method of choice (run, bike, drive, rent a scooter…), workout, repeat a couple of times with provisions provided along the way. Replenish the tank with some 2nd F food and drink upon returning to Dogpile. This is open for any and all PAX to participate in some or all of this one of a kind event. This is not an annual F3 tradition in the mold of the Forest Hill Loops, F3 yearly anniversaries, or holiday convergences. It’s better because you don’t know whether this will ever be done again so you shouldn’t miss out on this one with hopes that next year will be your year.

If you have any questions about how much fun you will have or how many FNGs you should bring, ask any one of the 44 previous participants in the original Frozen Triangle or check out the backblast and comments – https://backblasts.f3rva.org/2017/01/22/inaugural-f3-rva-csaup-and-its-not-even-noon-yet/ No really you should check out the backblast, Saab is a Hall of Fame BB author, alongside DK and Marv.

More info to follow as we get closer to the big day. Anyone looking to help out should get in touch with Gumbo or YHC and we’ll be happy to dole out some tasks. We’re so good at passing things off to others Honeymoon doesn’t even know that he has volunteered to supply water for the event.

Looking forward to a morning of mumblechatter, fun, with some 1st F mixed in.

    Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Shameless plug – December 20, No Toll – Annual 12 Days of Christmas workout – don’t miss out.

  • Team Work Makes the Dream Work

4 men and a couple of 14 yo that keep showing up ventured out into the gloom to see if it would be a beautiful day in the neighborhood. What transpired is as as follows:

COP: Arm circles, cherry pickers, DQs, side-Straddle hops, mt climbers, WWIIs, and Merkins.

    The Thang:

Burpee Back Mountain – partnered up for a Dora.  100 burpees.  Timer ran up and down amphitheater steps.

Quadruple Check Choo Choo Train – Everyone got a coupon. The original idea had to be modified big time due to low numbers at DP today.  P1 was the engine of the wheelbarrow, while P2 held P1’s feet, while P3 lunged behind (with the coupon). Since this was a Quadruple check, we all performed each task 4 times. This experiment taught me that a triple check is better than a quadruple check. Next, we tried a double check. P1 murder bunnied from Penny Stage to the lamp post, P2 walked and followed P1 with the coupon overhead, P3 again lunged behind (with the coupon). Everyone kept their coupon as we moseyed through the woods.

Due to differing fitness levels, various injuries, the Pax began to work as a unit. Some ran with a coupon. Some walked with 2 coupons. Some got to the next point without making their injuries worse (success!).

Triple Check at the Pipe Line.  Timer ran the pipeline loop.  P2 did AHs and P3 did 4 squats (with the coupon) x 4 curls x 4 overhead presses (repeato).

I had much more suffering to dole out, but the clock struck 6:54am, so we moseyed back up to the Penny Stage, again coming together as one mighty force that had mere minutes to get some coupons back to their appropriate place.

Native American run BTTF for COT.  Numbers.  Names.

Announcements: Loops at Forest Hill Park on Black Friday. Apparently, the reigning champ is Sippy Cup with 7 loops. Who’s gonna best him? Anthrax?

Prayer requests: Chippendale asked that we pray for his son, a UVA student, as the student body is still dazed from their recent tragic event. YHC took us out.

Final Thoughts: May we each continue to grow stronger, in all ways, so as to benefit ourselves, our families and our communities. May we not fall into paralysis when faced with the numerous tragedies that continue to befall our nation and the world. May we each do our part to improve the small portion of the world that we inhabit.
