  • UpChuck Does Not Hate the Pax…

Ten PAX joined up in four groups of four or two groups of eight or sixteen groups of one to break the monotony of the Quarantine, experience some human interaction, and find someone to talk to. The PAX chose this week’s number-challenged Dogpile. With YHC having the Q, accurate counting, per usual, was not only optional, but discouraged…temperatures and weather were a seasonally perfect sunny and 70. Here is, with some editorial license and a solid dose of suspension of disbelief, more or less what happened.

Mosey to the intersection of Park and Blanton, then down Rugby to Wilbon to the “far circle.” Couple of loops around the circle to bring in The Six.

COP included the following exercises, all with different numbers of reps.

    SSH
    Dead Man Hang
    Its
    Helicopters
    LBCs
    Reverse Crunches
    Scorpion Kicks
    HRMs

    Mosey to the Amphitheater Stage

    Dora 1-2-3 (or 100-200-300)

    100 WWIIs (1 count)
    200 Reverse crunches (1 count)
300 Flutter Kicks (2 count…right leg up and down = 1, or 2, depending upon how each PAX counts them).

“Runner” bear crawls up the ramp to the Stone Wall, then runs back to their partner on the stage by a route of their choice. Those worried about interception on the return trip by a modern-day King Herod were advised to return to the stage by another route.

PAX did flutter kicks x50 (4-count) for The Six.

Probation gave us an abbreviated 100 count.

Mosey to the Ha’ Penny Stage

    Touch-a-Tree

Like a baseball game without the National Anthem, a YHC Q would not be complete without Touch-a-Tree.

Round 1: Touch 3 different trees. Return to Stage. 5 burpees, 20 What-cha-ma-call-its.

Round 2: Touch 6 different trees. Return to Stage. 10 burpees, 40 What-cha-ma-call-its.

Round 1: Touch 9 different trees. Return to Stage. 15 burpees, 60 What-cha-ma-call-its.

    Mosey to the Great Lawn

    Four Corners (PAX Choice)

    10 HRMs
    20 LBCs
    30 Monkey Humpers
    40 SSHs
    SSHs for The Six. 4-Count x 40

Mosey to the Forgotten Lane on Love Hill

Partner up. Partner 1 runs to the gate and back. Partner 2 performs the following exercise until Partner 1 returns.
    Round 1: Bear crawl
    Round 2: Broad jump burpee
    Round 3: Lunges

    Mosey to the Near Circle

    Ring of Fire

    PAX Choice of 5 merkins…

    Chuck Norris
    Diamond
    HRMs + Shoulder taps
Stop, Drop, and Roll (Fire Drill, or whatever those are called)
    Burpees
    Cockroach Merkins (crowd pleaser)
    Just Do a Normal Merkin
YHC probably missed a type or two.

Mosey BTTF – the PAX turned this into a Jail Break, so 1 Minute Remained for…

    …Finishing the Ring of Fire

    Shoulder taps
    Some other type of merkin
    Werkins
YHC missed at least one type.

Number-a-ma, Name-a-ram-a, YHC took us out.

    NMS:

The PAX takes intense interest in YHC’s counting, in both style and substance. YHC enjoys this very much. YHC has decided to publish the Show Schedule for various counting styles. Touch-a-Tree will be available at all events, subject to change.

March: Lawrence Welk Day (Uh-one, two, three…)
    April: Dark
    May: Apparently, Militant Counting Day
June: Only Those Who Post Know (Perhaps Flatline’s Swedish Chef will make a cameo)

YHC also enjoys addressing questions from the PAX during his Q’s. In today’s version, some of the PAX expressed a desire to understand the difference between a 1 and 2-count flutter kick. YHC confesses that he has No Idea (Different Guy). This is a distinction that was not covered during YHC’s formal education nor during YHC’s stint at Q-School, which YHC did not in fact attend. TYA has graciously dedicated the entirety of this week’s Office Hours to comments from the PAX on this subject (every other Thursday, 9:00-9:01 a.m.).

YHC congratulates everyone who ran from their home on the south side to ET’s, then back to Dogpile, and then back home. Solid.

YHC also wants to congratulate anyone who ran for 26 minutes without stopping. YHC is impressed. Hat’s off also to the PAX who keep each other going. Well done.

Last note: each morning, the PAX gets together in a closed park (“Park closes at dark”), on the grounds of a closed school (“Fields Closed”), or runs on public streets. Other than a mythical unicorn-creature called “Sarah,” YHC is not aware of anyone messing with the PAX. Not a police officer, nor a citizen has done so in YHCs 4 years. A fitness instructor tried once to inhibit the PAX with a line of query regarding government licensing, but was repulsed by TYA’s swift employment of the phrase,”We’re done here.”

Perhaps this is because the PAX are many in number. Or, perhaps because The Gloom is super early. Or, perhaps because the PAX are super-buff, or graciously out-going, or frequently sporting matching bad-ass black, logo-ed F3 uniforms (or, in TYA’s case, a logo-ed “unitard”). If our purpose is to push our fellow man toward greater Accountability and Leadership in our community, YHC asks each man to think about how each of us can help build a society where a man going for a jog can be, for him (or for a her), a harassment-free way to enjoy one’s life, rather than have it taken away.

    Announcements:

Deuce is organizing a Memorial Day Murph. YHC thinks Deuce said 6 a.m. at Dogpile. Please correct YHC if that is inaccurate. 1 mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats, 1 mile run.

    UpChuck spits the bit.

  • Frank Abagnale

10 PAX happened to form a circle around a man known as “Swirly” for something called a “Hot Potato” Q. Shortly thereafter, a deuce of Deuce and Probation formed a PAX of 2 with no worry of legal intervention for the 5-0 were pursuing Seymour on the Nickel Bridge and looking into an All Points Bulletin issued for a 5’8″ white male, light brown beard, bald, and sporting “Virginia” paraphrenalia, who responds to the names “Jason” and “Marmaduke.”

Here’s what went down, more or less:

    COP, Swirly-Style:

    Dead Man Hang
    Stretch-to-the-Sky
    DQs
Mix of Wilson’s Wife, Fuddski, Yankee Aggressor, Southern Gentleman, and that devilish 3-inch “hold it” thing. 10 4-count merkins made for the icing on the cake.
    Flutter kicks
    Alabama Prom Dates
    LBCs

Kick it to Vinny for some traveling…mosey to the Pipe Line Loop for a Monstah Dora

    100 Flutter kicks (meh)
    200 jump squats (good burn)
300 merkins (ok, didn’t see that coming)

    Al Gore for da’ Six

Flip it to Bone Thugs for Frank Abagnale (was that a VQ as well?)

Every now and again, someone who has the Q nails it. To put it another way, there are home runs (over the fence, a common Q achievement) and then there are HOME RUNS (hit the Facade at Yankee Stadium or the Warehouse at Camden Yards). That dude NAILED IT.

Bone Thugs called a version of Catch Me if You Can, only this was a single jack-rabbit being chased by the PAX (all ten of them). Vinny has dubbed this “Frank Abagnale,” after the check-kiter popularized by Leonardo DiCaprio. Once caught – nay, IF caught – 5 HRMs for each PAX member.

    Runners:

Vinny clearly has a criminal past. Brother can run like he stole something.
YHC, bum knee and all, should stick to white collar crime.
Hardywood was the John Rambo of the group, running off-road, up-hill.
Bone Thugs showed his newly found fleetness-of-foot
Somewhere in there, YHC believes that Hitchhiker and Snuff each smoked a bunch of the PAX.

    That was awesome.

YHC took the PAX home with a Garbage Can Medley…20 ab exercises of each man’s choosing at each of 5 trash cans…run the traffic loop after each round.

Second time through, YHC took recommendations on which exercises were the most challenging…then the PAX did those on Round 2.

    Some kind of toe-touching-V-up-murderous combination
    Hardywood’s sitting arm-circle torture
Bench kicks (apparently, these are permitted even when Honeydo is not present)
    American Hammers
Burpees (a lesser known ab exercise)

    Mosey back to the Flag

Number-am-a, Name-a-ram-a, YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

F3 is sponsoring a Hire-a-Dentist fundraiser…get in touch with Seymour or Deuce for directions on how to get your teeth cleaned and make a can of COVID-19 aerosol for a single co-pay.

Deuce is also sponsoring a Memorial Day Murph…run a mile, 100 pull-ups, 200 merkins, 300 squats, and another mile run, all with a 20 pound pack. See YHC for suggestions on how to make-your-own 20-pound pack.

Keep the folks who are having stress and anxiety during the pandemic in your thoughts…patience and mental support are the watchwords for good leadership these days.

A nudge by Corporate early in the week to fill a gap in the Q sheet was just what YHC needed.  Far too long and few DogPile Q’s highlight YHC’s file.  Great to have Flatline back out in the gloom.  He remains the F3 Covid Czar and instructs the PAX to watch how things go in Sweden with herd immunity.  Though he hopes for a halfcourt shot vaccine in 8 months he suggests that everyone forget about sports and concerts for a really long time.  On a far less serious note, ask Gomer to demonstrate his new and improved version of Gorilla Humpers and ask Hardywood to show you his Real World audition tape.

  • Keep your distance and your feet moving!

14 warriors posted for Dogpile this morning and here is how it went down.

Mossy – Warm up : bunch of fun exercises to get the blood pumping and the body stretched out.

Track Work : partner up keeping 6ft apart 🙂 run to the first obstacle – 5 merkins – next obstacle 5 LT. Dans all the way around the track – plank up when finished.

Theatre : Dips ladder down 18-1 – incline merkin ladder back up 1-18

Burpee Shuffle : run in place burpee calls each pax member.

Ring of Fire : 5 merkins pax choice all the way around circle

    Mary : cross leg lifts, rosalitas , APD’s 6 inches – superman

    Mossy back to the flag!

Excellent work this morning guys – thanks for allowing me to lead. Evidently there was some slack talk and possibly some concern over YHC having the dogpile Q under restrictions from the Governor. Hey no worries guys the Governor understands when your the Q it’s your call 🙂

There is no question we have had to adapt and modify our workouts. YHC certainly misses the rusty cage and partnering up but we have all figured out how even without those things we can still get a helluva beatdown in.

Remember to shoot DTH an email when you can. Gomer is taking the lead on starting another run on Friday’s in the west end Deep Run Park – see him for details. We are going to have one helluva 3rd F once this damn virus is behind us – stay tuned for that dudes 🙂

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter even under the circumstances we each have a lot to be thankful for and as Gomer said when he took us out today – let’s remember that and step up and be that person that reaches out and helps his fellow man out. (Thanks for taking us out Gomer) . You know fellas the world is in desperate need of our leadership right now so let’s give it to them and make this world a better place .

    See y’all in the gloom.

  • “Good things come to those who wait….but only the things left by those who hustle.”

You know those guys who get into a position of no real authority at all (think mall cops, meter maids, first time Q’s), and think the rules don’t apply to them?  Those guys disgust me.

As I write this extremely delinquent back blast, the thought has occurred to question F3’s intelligence as a whole to give this responsibility to guy they nicknamed Probation, but I digress.  This morning Handshake informed me there’s also a rumor circulating that Swirly can pick off a field mouse from 300 yards away with the right rifle and from that distance it’s hard to tell the difference between my head and a field mouse.

So 14 warriors showed up at Dogpile this past Saturday for a dual Q with Hitchhiker and YHC at the helm, and this is how it went down.

First, Hitchhiker requested we number off, 1 & 2.  Hardywood requested we all brush up on our Korean so we continued with “Hana” (1) and “Dull” (2).  Hitchhiker took his Magnificent 7 and here’s the story as I heard it:

First, they moseyed through the Bump House to get to the crop circle East of the Virginia War Memorial Carillon Tower for some warm-ups, about a mile run.

    The warm-ups were as follows:

    Arm circle x10 (both direction)

    DQ x10

    Helicopters x10

    American Hammers x20

    LBC x 20

    Merkins x10

Second, polar bear crawl to intersection, 10 LBC at the intersection, run down the hill, 10 burpees, Bernie Sanders up the hill, and 10 merkins.  3 rounds.

Third, they moseyed to the long field in front of the Carillon tower.  Then it was Dora with one partner run to the end of the field and back while the other partner was doing the following: WWII x100, American Hammers x 200 (2 counts), LBC x 300.

Lastly, they moseyed to “mixing bowl” behind the Amphitheater. Total 11s. 10 burpees and 1 merkin on one side, run into and out of the mixing bowl to the other side, repeat the same exercise, and ran back to the other side, did 9 burpees and 2 merkins. Due to time, we ended up doing up to 8 burpees and 3 merkins.  At the beginning of the exercise, Bodos asked Hitchhiker, “Are you mad at us?” To which he responded “No! I was soooo happy to be outside and exercise with PAX in a gorgeous weather during the Stay-At-Home period.”

They moseyed back to the flag.

    Probation’s Lucky 7’s:

I took my crew of 7 hard charging heroes for warm-ups in the grass circle next to Caroline tower ( I know there’s probably a cooler term for that location I’ll be made aware of shortly).

    Warm-up

Being that this was my first Q, starting off strong was important.  In my mind we were to start with side straddle hops.  After sounding off, there was some confusion as to what I actually said.  The PAX insisted I said merkins, not side straddle hop, which was their excuse for all dropping to the merkin position while I remained standing.  Sensing the spirit of mutiny building, rather debating I apologized and moved on.  A potentially terrible situation was avoided and instead a symphony of sweat ensued that looked a little like this.

    Warm-Ups:

    15 side straddle hops

    15 Imperial Walkers

    15 3 count LBC’s

    15  Kimchi’s

    15 Merkins

    Thang 1

Taking the field in front of Caroline Tower we did 7 rounds running up and back, doing 7 reps every 25 yards on the way up:

    7 Merkins

    7 Mountain Climbers

    7 Squats

    7  WWII’s

    Mosey to Fire Hydrant

    Thang 2

Pairing up, partner one elbow planks at fire hydrant while other partner runs to pull bars and back, doing the following workout at the pull-up bars.  This was done for….wait for it……7 rounds:

    7 Pull-ups

    7 Squats

    Mosey to stone wall:

    Thang 3:

Partnering up, 1st partner did donkey kicks while other did merkins.  Went for 4 rounds due to time.

The entire PAX converged at the flag for Ring of Fire.  7 reps of the exercise of choice, we went through 13 exercises.

We had a FNG, Laughing Gas’s son, who was given the incredibly awesome name of Cobra Kai.  Welcome Cobra Kai.

We ended with me using a website to randomly generate a bible verse for the group.  It was Matthew 6:34:  “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.”  Bodos closed us out in a prayer.

  • Whoopie, Viagra and Social Distancing at DogPile

YHC is always excited about a Dogpile Q and did some homework in anticipation of a large crowd and keeping our workout groups to 10 or less people, with 16 showing up for a nice cool morning for a workout this was going to be easy. YHC immediately had everyone number off 1,2 1,2(this took a couple of times as we kept going 1,2,3,4…you know it is F3 after all!) so we had 2 groups of 8! Awesome, ready for the fun to begin and here is how it went down:

    The THANG part 1

Group 1 (Timer) went to the crop circle East of the Tower for some warmups (SSH, Russian Soldiers, DQ’s, LBC,s Alabama Prom Dates(it was still dark), merkins and helicopters. We started at the top with lunges to intersection, run down the hill, 20 LBC’s, bernie saunders up the hill and 20 merkins, repeat with Karaoke up the hill(switching half way, ) and third rotation with Bernie Saunders up the hill. This being completed we moseyed to long field at the tower to relieve Group 2

Group 2(AMRAP) started at the long field with COP warm ups then did 4 corners around the entire field.

Corner 1 – 10 burpees runs to Corner 2 for 20 merkins run to Corner 3 for 30 squats and run to Corner 4 for 40 2 ct flutter kicks. Rinse and repeat waiting on Group 1 to switch.

We switched and Group 2 was at the Triangle and Group 1 long field at the tower. Group 1 had a lot of mumble chatter during this rotation hence the title of the BB, as we did not have ET’s to sit and catch up, this was great to joke around and get in some of the Fellowship F!

    The THANG Part 2

With both groups completing the rotations we hand out the next cards with the following:

Group 1(Timer) mosey to the bowl behind the Amphitheater for 11’s. Starting at the wall 10 donkey kicks, bottom of hill 5 merkins, top of the other side we did 1 2 count ball dippers(YHC said Bonnie Blairs and that started a discussion of how many speed skaters could we name…I think we got to 4). ran to bottom of hill 5 merkins, to wall, 9 donkey kicks. We got to 8 donkey kicks and 3 Ball dippers stopped so Group 2 can have some of this fun and moseyed to the cage to relieve Group 2.

Group 2(AMRAP) mosey to cage and round 1 was 5 pull-ups, 10 merkins and 15 squats, round 2 was 5 Jerkins, 10 WW2 sit-ups and 15 2 count American Hammers. Back to round 1 then 2 if possible.

Group 1 performed Round 1 and 2 at the cage and moseyed back to pick up Group 2 at the bowl to return to the flag.

    COT

We return to the flag for namerama and numberama and announcements. The group took a knee and YHC took us out.

Last Resort is a new AO on Mondays starting at 5:30am, had 6 F3 vets and no FNG’s, will keep going and hope to get some FNG’s as last week was a 40 degree rain morning.

  • Socially Distant Beatdown

23 hand-washing, mask-wearing, self-quarantine-rs posted for our first social distancing beatdown of the Covid-19 era. Temps were sunny and 70. The pax did the following, more or less:

Slaughter-ish Starter (all in-cadence, Lawrence Welk style):

    3 merkins

    11 SSHs

    19 flutter kicks

    3 merkins

Happy birthday to Mr. Lawrence Welk, who would have been 117 this week. He taught YHC the art of calling cadence.

Mosey to the Amphitheater for COP:

    SSHs x19

    IW’s x10

    DQ’s x10

    Helicopters x10

    Merkins x19

    LBC’s x19

    Something else x10

Assemble on the Stage for Self-Quarantine (1 hour workout entirely on the stage).

Correction: YHC remembered that Wilson does this every September.

    Ascending Medley

Starting at the bottom, do 10 monkey humpers and 9 reverse crunches on each step.

Early finishers hold decline merkin plank on the top step, mixing in assorted ups-and-downs

    Descending

    Partner up. Remain socially distant.

Partner 1 runs down to bottom step, while

Partner 2 performs (Not) Wilson’s Boxing Cockroach (do it solo!) at the top step.

When partner 1 returns, swap places.

Attempt to have each partner run to each step (18, then 17, then 16, etc).

Speaking of Wilson (and, YHC thinks…Nancy Lopez) and Social Distancing, Wilson and NL showed up at the 06:30 a.m. point of the work out having been unable to find the PAX, who had been hiding in plain sight AT THE BOTTOM OF THE AMPHITHEATER.

Early finishers hold decline merkin plank on the top step, mixing in assorted ups-and-downs.

Mosey towards the Great Lawn, but stop short for…

    (Don’t You Dare) Touch-a-Tree:

Somehow, Touch-a-Tree has become the most complicated of F3 rotations.

To paraphrase Corporate, “How is this hard for people? You touch a tree.”

    YHC agrees.

Remaining socially distant, form teams of 3.

Rounds of 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 trees. As with any triple check, each man does all three parts. Exercises for rounds 10 and 8 were squats and flutter kicks

Exercises for rounds 6 and 4 were something else and LBCs (who knows?)

Exercises for round 2 were burpees and burpees.

EF Hutton led the early finishers in some planking.

Mosey to the Great Lawn for 4 Corners:

    Corner 1: Merkins x19

    Corner 2: Snow Angels x19

    Corner 3: Flutter Kicks x19

    Corner 4: SSHs

When done, run it back in reverse.

Short mosey to the front of the Carillon for some Mary

    Box cutters x19

    Rosalita’s x19

Group Mosey BTTF (Handshake has only one speed)

Number-am-a, Name-a-ram-a, YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

Great to have Sippy back. He’s running a Go-Fund-Me to get a new front tooth. Pinterest is hosting a site with his options.  https://www.pinterest.com/cj5013/gold-teeth/

Apparently, Bodo’s canceled God (or, at least, in person services) for his parish. (A small handful of) people are losing their minds. Given the circumstances, let’s all remember how challenging this unprecedented situation is.

Let’s keep all of our friends, neighbors, and colleagues struggling with how to deal with Covid-19 and its implications in our prayers.  Patience, kindness, leadership, and understanding to everyone. Keep calm and mosey on. And, remember, this is real.

    NMS:

YHC signed up for this Q some months ago anticipating a March celebration of Lawrence Welk. Life intervened. Somehow, what YHC had planned just didn’t seem quite right, so YHC reconsidered the following:

“Self-quarantine on stage.” Wilson already does that.

“Prison cell quarantine in a parking space.”  Issues: a) there are no marked spaces at Dogpile and b) Chum already does this.

Who would have guessed that all of the really good “pandemic-themed” Q options would already have been taken?

  • 48 Months, 1461 Days – all 1 day at a Time

28 gloom warriors fought the blustery winds and dominated Dogpile this morning. Gumbo had been missing from the Dogpile menu for quite some time, but it came back with a vengeance today. Today’s flavor was:

Mosey around the normal COP circle and down into the amphitheater for COP, including:

    • SSHs x48 (one for each month Gumbo has been with F3)
    • DQs x14
    • LBCx x61 – 1461 days with F3
    • 1 Burpee OYO – 1 day at a time baby
    • Jazzercisers x10
    • Tempo Merkins x10
    • Hold Plank, down to Elbow Plank, then Alternating Shoulder Taps x10
    • Freddie Mercuries x10

    Meal Time (The THANG)…

    Step Aerobics –

    • On the way up 4 box jumps on each step
    • Coming down 4 Derkins on each step
    • Plank-o-rama for the SIX

    Rosie’s Rapid Fire Rando-rama

Mosey behind the amphitheater to the fire hydrant area for some Rosie’s Rapid Fire Rando-rama exercises, all IC x10 and fast pace, including:

    • Hello Dollies
    • Rosalitas
    • Flutter Kicks
    • APDs
    • American Hammers

    Triple Check #1

PAX 1 – run from fire hydrant to the rusty cage and do Burp-Ups (3 first round, 2 second round and 1 third round)

    PAX 2 – jump squats

    PAX 3 – box cutters

    Triple Check #2

Mosey down to the pipe loop for the next triple check. Hold six inches, then 90 degrees, then 45 degrees for the SIX. Triple Check was:

PAX 1 – run pipe loop

    PAX 2 – mountain climbers

    PAX 3 – Freddie mercuries

    NMS:

It has been a minute or two since Gumbo attended Dogpile, much less took the Q and served up some spicy goodness. It was great to be back. Everyone pushed hard today. That wind was no joke, but we got our miles in and even put in a few minutes of EC (my bad).

Well done guys. Thanks for letting me lead.

    No More Gumbo For You!
