River Road & Ridge

  • Special Operators, Albeit in Training

Seven night stalkers moved further, faster, and fought harder in the latest edition of First Watch. Conditions were 70 and sunny. According to their leader hiding in the bushes, the following might possibly have happened:

Mosey from the parking lot to the back of RRC, Baptist.

Whoa – on coming car split the PAX. Leader in front on one side of the road, six PAX on the other. Q proceeded to perform one burpee at each speed hump. Meanwhile, being mentally alert, physically strong, and morally straight, the PAX determined to catch up, or, failing that, attempt a mutiny: the oft-mentioned, but rarely attempted, “We’ll just stop running and see whether the Q noticed.” Well aware of their shenanigans, YHC moseyed to the next corner in the parking lot, veered left, and took refuge in the bushes. After some time, along came a walking PAX of six, wondering aloud how 215 pounds of Manhood had disappeared into The Gloom. Boom – trap sprung. The predators becoming the prey.

Mosey back to the front of RRC, Baptist, for the COP

SSHs, DQs, IWs, reverse crunches, WWIIs, HRMs…and mosey 5 feet west to the steps.

Dora 100-200-300, with a twist. Grab a partner.

Partner 1: Run to the bush on River Road.

    Partner 2: Exercises. 100 derkins, 200 four-count flutter kicks, and 300 SSHs.

Twist: each time the partners switch, perform 5 Boo-Yah mercans. Harder than it sounds, but the PAX showed the world that they are specially selected and well-trained.

Mosey to the back of RRC, Baptist for Elevens. Much discussion of the best method for achieving the objective. YHC enjoys feedback. Frankly, YHC deserved some after an exceptionally poorly laid out exercise. Adapt. Overcome. But, always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and esprit de corps of the group.

WWIIs and snow angels. Bernie Sanders up the incline in the parking lot. Run back down. Better training. Fight with all your might. Give it 100 percent and then some. Under no circumstances embarrass yourself.

Slow mosey back through the parking lot. 5 LBCs at every handicapped space, totaling about 30 LBCs and 5 WWIIs on the last space.

Burpees at each speed hump on the way BTTVSF. Numbers, names, and Handshake took us out.

NMS: World’s longest triple check May 6 at Godwin. Boot camp, ruck, and run in circles. Find some teammates and one injured dude. Gomer has the details.

Good chatter today. YHC needed some good laughs, and the PAX delivered. Coffeeteria hit the spot, albeit at 6 a.m.

    UpChuck spits the bit.

  • RESPECT

So Fireman Ed is now 50. 14 stallions including the Fireman (who isn’t a Fireman) converged for a coupon disc golf extravaganza this morning at the wee hour of 5. Ed showed up around 4:45 to find a Woodfin truck and thought “Handshake is early” but it was the great Senor Frog. Once all the PAX gathered we did the following:

COP: DMH, HRMs, FMs (until multiple PAX sounded the gaseous trumpets), ACs.

Partner up. One partner has the coupon the other has the discs. Mosey to Club Vista.

Catch me if you can. P1: 5 burpees P2: Mosey with coupon. Switch once P1 catches up to P2. I was amazed with how fast the PAX were going with coupons. A couple looked faster with the coupon than without.

Mosey switching the coupon, drop off coupon go to hole 1. Hole 1 – Throw bear crawl and throw then bear crawl until you get the disc in the basket. Guessing about half par and half above par. Lunge to hole 2.

Hole 2 – Same as hole 1 but throw then bunny hop. after hole is complete 3 burpees per shot. Mosey to hole 18.

From the basket, wheelbarrow with partner to tee box or close to tee box. Throw shots back to basket. A direct hit was made to Handshake as he was going for his shot. It distracted him enough that he had trouble finding his disc. 10 merkins per shot after completing hole.

Mosey back to Club Vista Lane. Catch me if you can with 5 WWIIs. Then share block and go back to home base. Finished with American Hammers, Mountain Climbers and 50 APDs (getting me ready I think).

Announcements: Curahee anniversary with workout plus run/walk teams, Whitesnake goes Bluegrass event April 22, Friday is Ramm gears for amateurs with Huffys or other not so fancy bikes, and something I forgot (since I am 50).

It was great to have a nice turnout to celebrate a milestone. Thanks Kubota for the coupons and balloon. This is the third time in the last year plus that I have done disc golf at First Watch. It may be repetitive, but I enjoy it. Enjoy Spring and hopefully I will see you soon.

  • First for the First

10 crazy ruffians arose long before the dawn was even contemplating the new day to exercise and tell jokes. Here’s what went down:

COP on the front church patio after a mosey. Dead man hang / helicopters / DQs / Russian Soldiers / Imperial Walkers / APDs / LBCs / Hand Release Merkins / Planks to Peter Parkers/ Plank Jacks / Elbow Planks/ Pickle pounders not to be confused with Chicken Peckers / Plank. SSHs 21s- 5 Burpees

Dora in the back lot. 100 Jump Squats / 200 Merkins / 300 2x Flutters. Parter runs to half point, bernie back, full lot, bernie back.

Wall exercises: Wall sits with body taps / Dirty Hookups/ Donkey Kicks, all IC

Triple Check back at the starting lot: P1 Squat Thrusters with coupon/ P2 Reverse Crunch / P3: Run the loop

COP: Up Downs x20, end with some yoga

NMS: Happy to be received as a First Watch stepchild and lead my first Q at this auspicious AO. Apologies to the Pax for the swearing and hard driving, but better it comes out with the Pax than at the church. Upchuck made an incognito appearance at some point and left a case of Yuengling for Kubota, but disappointingly Kubota did not share with the pax. Thanks for the opportunity to lead!

  • Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell

Nine Brutus-wannabes avoided Q-regicide and the weather report to post at FW in better than expected temps. Our FNG ran to the AO (avoiding the ride with Kubota or just wanted to warm up, we’ll never know) to borrow a pair of gloves and off we went:

COP: SSH, Don Qs, Imperial Walkers, Merkins, Flutterkicks, LBCs. Off to covered area of main lot for Triple check: HRMs, Heels2Heaven, and run loop. Then 2 round of 4 corners:

Rnd 1: 10 Burpees, 20 Flutterkicks, 30 Jumpsquats, 40 SSHs. Rnd 2: 20 Merkins, 30 WWIIs, 40 Mtn Climbers, & 50 Jumpropes. Instead of running between corners there was Bear Crawl, Lunge, Bernie Sanders. Back to FW parking lot: Run the lap stopping at every jut-out to do a Burpee but add 1 burpee more each one.

Finish with 3 rounds of 20 PLTs and 90 seconds of Mary. YHC took us out.

NMS: Welcome Finkle! You know someone who runs to a 5:00 am AO his 1st workout is our kinda dude, even if he knows handshake… Solid work by all PAX, Bodos appeared to be upset there were no cinder blocks to destroy. There is still some confusion as to the actual powers of a Site Q as Kubota continues to push the boundaries towards totalitarian authority. Rumor has it he will start to require all Qs to pre-submit a weinkie for his approval. Appropriate that on the Ides of March the Bard once wrote: Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

  • Bodo’s does not break any blocks; Handshake hocks loogie on self.

Another typical Wednesday morning at First Watch brought 8 chilly regulars into the 5am gloom. YHC called for headlamps, Last Call exclaimed “What!?” Time to warm up, let’s go!

Mosey around the parking lot to the tiny triangle park for:

    COP:

SSH’s, Imperial Walkers, Ukranian Soldiers, Merkins, Hand-Release Merkins, Crab Cakes, LBC’s, Helicopters, DQ’s

Mosey down S. Ridge, evade the paperman in the pick-up truck, breath in his exhaust and commence all the way to the bottom.

Oh look, there are 7 blocks lying beside the road.

    Partner up!

Timer runs down Westham Station and turns around at the three full trash bags beside the road and runs back to partner who is doing exercises.

    Round 1: Curls

    Round 2: Bench Press

    Round 3: Overhead Press

All 7 blocks must go back up to the AO parking lot (~.5 mile uphill, of course)

Keeping same partners, Partner 1 carries two cinder blocks while Partner 2 completes 40 LBC’s and then runs to catch up with “two cinder block carrying partner.” Switcheroo until back at YHC’s truck.

Deposit blocks and circle up for:

    Honeymoon Suite:

APD’s, Suzanne Somers L&R, Pickle Pounders, Diamond Merkins (for Honeydo, missed you!)

Four minutes of “Broga by Last Call” to finish us out.

Numbers, Names, Announcements and Fudd took us out!

    NMS:

YHC is pleased to report that all blocks made it back up to the truck in one piece, even with Bodo’s posting! Handshake couldn’t shake a loogie loose while doing APD’s and had it boomerang right back on his face. Carrying two cinder blocks back up the hill had it’s challenges. Double shoulder carries turned into Farmer’s carries for some of the PAX. “Proper Diamond Merkins” which consist of putting your nose in the middle of the Diamond, are tough but rewarding. A rare FW morning twilight was witnessed this morning. Bodo’s asked how many times one must post to FW in order to Q. Answer: When you put your name on the Q Sheet!

Well done fellas and way to work. Coming back up that hill sucked!

    SYITG!

  • All Lions, no Lambs

Twelve spring seekers convened under the lamp light eagerly awaiting today’s First Watch Q. Would headlamps be necessary? Only if desired. Welcome the 8 year Kotter and the first time FW-er then off we went. Longer mosey around the triangle then west on River to the typical convening spot in front of the church for:

    COP

    • 20x SSH
    • 10x Helicopters (with an audible suggested for Upchuck)
    • 10x DQs
    • 15x Arm Circles both directions for our first time watcher
    • 20x Hillbillies (slow to fast)
    • 10x Mountain Climbers
    • 10x Freddie Mercuries
    • Probably something else in there too

Short mosey to the back parking lot via the carpool road, stopping at each speed bump for a courtesy burpee.

    The Thang

Partner up for touch a tree. Partner exercises while other partner touches 3 trees. 4 rounds. Merkins / bear crawl, skip / jump squat, run / WWIIs, run / burpees.

Skeedaddle south on Ridge, stopping for 2 more burpees, then heading east on River to Country Squire for a game of 2 forward, 1 back. Two mailboxes forward running, 10 merkins, 1 mailbox back backward running, 20 LBCs. LBCs for the six. Continue 5 times until we meet at S Ridge.

Native people run back to the parking lot.

Triple check. APDs, plank, 10x burpees as the pace car. BTTVSF.

Numbers, names, difficulty renaming an 8 year Kotter, then YHC took us out.

    Moleskin

Lively bunch this AM as is usual for First Watch. Great to have Machismo out for his 1 year anniversary and Jelly (temporarily renamed to Billy Ray) after an 8 year hiatus.

Sorry (not sorry) for all the running. You all know YHC enjoys cardio.

    Splinter out.

  • My First…Again

Gumbo was on the menu this morning for the first time (but not the last time) at First Watch and it was a seating for 11. These are the side dishes and accoutrements served along side the Gumbo:

0530 and time to Mosey – right out of the parking lot and YHC may or may not have gotten lost or disoriented in the darkness. Nonetheless, we completed our mile and stopped at the corner of S. ridge and Country Squire for COP, including:

    • Deadman Hang
    • Helicopters
    • Jazzercisers
    • SSHs
    • Tempo Merkins
    • LBCs
    • Flutter Kicks

Triple Check – Runner, Imperial Squat Walkers, Box Cutters. Round 1, runner goes up S. Ridge a bit. Round 2 runner goes up Country Squire. Round 3 runner does 10 burpees.

Mosey up S. Ridge to Triangle for Triangle of Fun: 3 Burpees at point 1, run to point 2 3 Burpees, 10 2-ct mountain climbers and run to point 3, 3 Burpees, 10 2-ct mountain climbers and 20 Hello Dollies. Back to point 1 and plank for six.

Mosey to parking lot for 4 corners – 10 merkins, 20 2-ct Freddies, 30 squats, 40 LBCs. Plank-o-rama and then reverso 4 corners 40 – 30 – 20 – 10 same exercises. And, some references to American Pie – Flo still has no idea what that is.

    3 minutes of Mary

COT, Numbers, Names and YHC took us out.

Great morning men. Great to take the Q at a new AO – a VQ of sorts. The energy even woke me up 15 minutes early this morning…and that’s early.

Lots of mumble chatter and some hard work put in. All with plenty of time for coffee afterwards.

    Thanks for letting me lead.

    No More Gumbo For You!

  • Return to the Taint

Nine men took on the hills of First Watch covering roughly 2-2.5 miles with some exercises along the way.

    • Alabama Prom Dates

    Numberama, Nameorama, COT

    MOLESKIN

Coincidentally it was a year ago tomorrow that YHC took the PAX on its first trip to visit the Devil’s Taint.  This time no men were lost or left behind.  The only thing left was a trail of exhaust from the paper boy and the remnants of Splinter’s Valentine’s Day ribeye.  Fudd can attest.  Special thanks to Kubota for the commemorative chain.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

Help Mr. Rogers Saturday unload and organize at Virginia Home for Boys and Girls 11am

  • China is Always Watching

A group of 9 stargazing enthusiasts rose early to gaze into the abyss and discuss various forms of aerial surveillance. Here is what is currently trending on tik tok.

Short mosey to the front of the church for introductions and disclaimers. Warm Ups included helis, DQ’s, Jazzercise, WWII’s and a short shavasana. Tales were shared and personal space was violated but everyone seemed warm.

COP 1: Everyone was in position to bring back a Doozy inspired crowd favorite, Mankillers. Calves burning so lets mosey back to the launch to collect coupons out of Kubota’s secure vehicle. Short mosey to the southern most tip of the park.

Triple Check Bonanza: Numbers were perfect to perform a variety of 3 legged exercises. 1st round: Curls, WWII’s, Timer runs to the stoplight and back. 2nd Round: Block Press, Heals to Heaven, Timer Lunges to 1st mailbox, Bernie back. Mosey back to the parking lot for 3rd Round: Manmaker Burpees, Flutter Kicks, Timer Runs to the end of the lot, Bernie back.

Return coupons to the secure vehicle, circle up for quick bit of Broga and shavasana.

Numbers, Names, Announcements, Prayers. YHC took us out.

    No announcements recalled

NMS: Perfect conditions filled this morning. Splinter was limber and aware enough to avoid a collision with an incoming PAX member on his premile jaunt. Mumble Chatter is always strong at the Watch including a variety of topics such as horticulture, satellites, space stations and home renovations. Daily goals for the monthly challenge achieved. Well done fellas. Great job in starting the day strong.

  • First Class Workout

The cold rain could not stop 8 wide awake gentlemen of the 5am gloom from getting their money’s worth! After Splinter falls in line and Handshake revs his engine in the middle of River Rd, the following may have happened:

    COP in front of church:

Dead Man Hang, Reach for the Sky, DQ’s, that’s enough, let’s go!

Since Splinter ran his Feb 1 continuous mile right before the workout started, the PAX will:

Run a continuous mile through the River Road Hills neighborhood ending at the entrance of $$$Windsor on the James$$$

While in WOTJ, at each mailbox (there were plenty) conduct different exercises depending on what the house number is on the mailbox. To be brief, there were many HR Merkins (front sides get wet), several Burpees, a lot of WW2’s (backs get wet), some Heels to Heaven (backs get wetter), just enough Lt. Dan’s, and some Suzanne Somers just so the PAX could get their sides wet.

After making the turn past Governor Gilmore’s house and back up to the entrance, the PAX headed back to the parking lot.

    Partner up for:

    Partner 1 elbow planks

Partner 2 lunges 15 paces and turns around and lunges back to partner.

Partner 2 then completes 10 Plerkins on Partner 1’s back.

    2+ rounds

    Back to VSF for:

Numbers, Names, Announcements (none, its raining) and YHC took us out!

    NMS:

The backblast title is taken from a Spider Run route that Marv created named “First Class Run.” Only those who have ventured into Windsor on the James will know. YHC admits, this morning sucked!!! YHC will bet anyone that the streets in WOTJ were wetter than any other street in Richmond. Take my word for it! The PAX can blame Splinter for coaxing YHC into dishing out Suzanne Somers in order to get everyone’s sides soaked.

80 WW2’s + 20 Heels to Heaven = 100 Abs Exercises and 1 continuous mile for all the February Challenge entrants!

2+ miles total. Still a tougher workout than WTH! 🙂

Way to work this morning, Men!

    SYITG!
