  • Keeping the Peace for all Pickleballers

On the eve of Easter, 11 of our finest mature gentlemen converged on an Easter themed workout. We noticed two unmarked cars and a marked car gracing us with their presence. Was it for us? No it was for the following Pickleball tournament.

COP: More jumping than usual. Inivisible jump ropes, SSHs, HRMs, MCs, DQs, FMs. Mosey to field.

E1: Partner 1 broad jump burpees, other partner runs most of the way down the field and back. Switch until both reach the destination.

E2: Partner 1 bear crawls, Partner 2 bunny hops switch at 25 yards at 50 yards do lunges until the end.

E3: Wheelbarrows switch at 25 yards, run the last 50 yards.

E4: Dora with 100 merkins, 200 WWIIs, 300 jump squats. Mosey to back of school.

The main event. The Easter egg hunt while crabwalking. This took a lot less time that I anticipated. Tater came out as the winner with 9 eggs. Free coffee for him. Mosey to chin up bars.

10 chin ups 20 dips, 8 chin ups, 20 dips, 6 chin ups, 20 dips, 4 chin ups, 20 dips, 2 chin ups, 20 dips. Mosey to home base.

Triple check with wall sits, flutter kicks and run around most of the parking lot.

Ended with a few ab exercises and stretching.

Don’t forget the CSAUP in early May. See slack for details. Also, Whitesnake’s Pixies tribute band, Here comes your Band will be at the Canal Club tonight. Prayers for Fudd’s family, Roger Roger and me. I am doing pretty well though. Good job White Deer with your attempt to recruit a police officer to join F3, even while we were doing APDs. Thanks for letting me lead.

Fireman Ed – let’s see how bad the Jets mess up the draft this Thursday!

  • Really Roscoe?

Instead of attending RVA’s own Monument Ave 10k today, we did a run-heavy beatdown.

After Fudd’s dog, Roscoe, made a beeline for my shovel flag and proceeded to piss on it, we were ready to begin.

Warm up: Run around the parking lot (high knees, butt kickers, karaoke).

Circle up for COP: Disclaimer, SSHs, Arm Circles, Cherry Pickers, DQs, Mt Climbers, WWIIs, & Merkins. Recover. Enough of that: Let’s roll!

Line up on the saturated Gridiron.
25 MH on the 25 yard line, run back to the start.
Repeat and add 50 Shoulder Taps on the 50 yard line, run back.  Repeat, add 75 LBCs (we got nice and soggy here)…
finish with 100 SSHs. Roscoe had a ball running all over the place, when allowed. Besides his antics within 30 seconds of showing up, he was a perfect gentleman otherwise.

    Next up: Track Attack
Run the track twice.  If you get passed, do a Burpee.  This was gonna be fun, in my mind.  IRL, we just ran around the track twice.

    Eye of the Storm
Audible to a parking lot instead of another saturated field.  5 Jump Squats in the center between each corner exercise, which the Pax picked in random order (20 Merkins, 20 AHs, 20 Lunges, 20 Plank Jacks).  Just for funsies, we did it twice.

Triple Check in front of Short Pump MS
P1 runs loop.  P2 Balls to the Wall.  P3 WWIIs.

Mosey BTTF, but we stopped for 5 burpees OYO.  Mosey, stop, 5 more burpees.  Mosey, stop, 5 more burpees… I think we did about 40 burpees in total.  Some grumbles here.  I let Chum know that we ran out of time and got off easy.  I had a 100 burpee Dora planned.  There’s always next time.  And I still have the ghost flag.

Circle up for some Mary (FMs, Heels to Heaven, finish with 60 second elevated leg hold).

    Names.
    Numbers.
Announcements: Piglet has another little piglet joining the litter on Tuesday, 4/15/25, as his M. will be induced at 12pm. Prayers for a healthy M and baby piglet. Century Classic 2.0 May 2-3.  Don’t think about how Completely Stupid And Utterly Pointless it is – just sign up.
Prayer requests: prayers for GomerPyle’s upcoming (possibly?) knee surgery.  Prayers for Fudd’s wife’s cousin, Hannah, who at only 23 yo is facing serious health concerns.
Moleskin: If you’re breathing today, you have something to be grateful for and the ability to do something for someone else.  Make it happen.

    SYITG!

  • The Great 8

For those non-hockey fans, Alexander Ovechkin just tied Gretzky for the most goals ever. Sooooo we did a lot of things with 8s after a brief warmup.

Ovi-Ab-Beast on a 120 yard field: 8 sets of Abs, 6 times. WWIs, WWIIs, Heals to Heaven, Crunchy, Side Crunches, and American Hammers

4 Corners Prostitute Style: 8 Burpees, 16 Merkins, 24 Carolinas, 32 WWIIs. (For those at home, that’s 56 Burpees)

Lindsey of Step Ups and Squats (30-10, 20-20, 10-30)

Arms with 8 Pull ups and 16 Dips, followed by 7 Pull ups and 14 Dips, 6 and 12, etc.

    Lots of stretching…and coffee time

  • Fifty Two

I Q’d on my birthday. 10 Pax descended on the friendly confines of the land of pickleball but no pickleball for this crew.

COP: DQs, DMH, ACs, merkins, FMs. Mosey to main field.

E1: 4 corners cumulative with 13 HRMs, 26 heels to heaven (3 sets of these were kinda rough), 39 jump squats and 52 SSHs. Mosey about 50 feet.

E2: Doras with 52 burpees, 104 2 count flutter kicks and 208 LBCs. Mosey to benches

E3: 4 sets of 13 derkins with 13 2 count step ups. Mosey to burpee hill.

E5: After PAX tried to convince me that the hill was renamed LBC hill, I told them we had so far only done 26 burpees so we needed to do 26 more. We accomplished that OYO in 4 sets. Mosey to chin up bars.

E6: 3 sets of chin ups and tricep dips. First set 10 and 20, second set 9 and 18 and the third set 7 and 14. Mosey to playground.

E7: Triple check with shoulder taps, WWIIs, and lunges across parking lot and run back. For some reason this exercise had some grumbles. Finished with stretching.

Prayers for Pinto’s friend and his family, Fudd’s sister and family, Roger Roger and me. I am doing well overall (praise god) but prayers that I can manage a medication side effect. It was good to go to coffeeteria and we even had someone ask Chum and Jville for help to try to fix a large car dent with a suction cup. Enjoy your weekend and thanks for allowing me to lead.

  • Cliff Notes

See Cliff Notes discussion about St. Augustine at the bottom.

    COT

For no particular reason, I wanted to learn little bit about St. Augustine. Most of the following is copied out of Wikipedia.

St. Augustine is from North Africa. St. Augustine Florida, the oldest city in the US is named after him.

St. Augustine lived from November 13, 354 AD – August 28, 430 AD

Augustine is the patron saint of brewers, printers and theologians.

    • He helped formulate the doctrine of Original Sin. (I’ve heard Original Sin described as “The Only Empirically Verifiable Doctrine of the Christian Faith”.)
    • Augustine took the view that, if a literal interpretation contradicts science and humans’ God-given reason, the biblical text should be interpreted metaphorically. While each passage of Scripture has a literal sense, this “literal sense” does not always mean the Scriptures are mere history; at times they are rather an extended metaphor.
    • While not breaking down the conditions necessary for war to be just, Augustine coined the phrase in his work The City of God. In essence, the pursuit of peace must include the option of fighting for its long-term preservation. Such a war could not be pre-emptive, but defensive, to restore peace. Thomas Aquinas, centuries later, used the authority of Augustine’s arguments in an attempt to define the conditions under which a war could be just
    • Augustine was among the earliest to examine the legitimacy of the laws of man, and attempt to define the boundaries of what laws and rights occur naturally, instead of being arbitrarily imposed by mortals. All who have wisdom and conscience, he concludes, are able to use reason to recognize the lex naturalis, natural law. Mortal law should not attempt to force people to do what is right or avoid what is wrong, but simply to remain just. Therefore “an unjust law is no law at all“. People are not obligated to obey laws that are unjust, those that their conscience and reason tell them violate natural law and rights.

    Dear Lord,

We thank you for the wisdom of the ancients. Much of what we wrestle with today, learned people wrestled with long ago. Amen!

  • Grid Iron St Patrick’s Day Weekend

11 of us gathered at Grid Iron, not knowing it was about to be a St Patrick’s Day theme with some familiar exercises…just with some “Oh” or ”Ohhhh” reactions.

Warmup and then to the soccer field for a modified 4 Corners…the Four Leaf Clover. 5 Burpees at midfield every time and 25 Merkins, Carolina Dry Docks, Squats and WWIIs at each corner. But the “Oh” was to add a Burpee at the end of every exercise, in addition to the 5 at midfield. (29 total Burpees).

Then we took a break (that means Abs). 4 sets of 25: WWIs, Crunchy Frogs, Plank Side Crunches, and the new O’Merican Hammer (later called the Irish Hammer) which is a two count ‘Merican Hammer but dropping your back to the ground on the third county for a sit up, then coming up again.

Mosey to the other field with the hill for 7’s (American Hammers and Merkins). Then a Dora of 100 Merkins, 200 Lunges/Squats, and 300 Heal Raises. Took another break (more Abs) for 4 sets of 25: Side Crunches, Heals to Heaven, and Knee Ups. Then an O’Lindsay (Modified Lindsay): 30-10, 20-20, 10-30: Steps up with a Knee Raise at the top, and Dips with 1 leg raised.

Some stretching, and then headed to the wall for 30 Mike Tysons between 15 People’s Chair, Milkers, and Muhammad Ali’s. Finished with more stretching…and we’re done. Gypsy said we had about 1.5 miles between all of those Abs and Chests. Nice!

Great work by the PAX today, and welcome to Gridiron Tailspin.  Needless to say Tailspin and Gomer hit it off given their common bond of having served our country.  Thankfully White Deer did not make him hate us. YHC usually is dragging on Saturday after a long week.  No different today.  Therefore, it is obvious that YHC must hate himself for this beat-down.

Lunch on Tuesday at Joey’s.  Continued prayers for Fireman Ed and Roger Roger.

God is good all of the time!

  • Almost Never

A dozen posted for the final GridIron in February. Mosey from the old parking lot to the nearby new one. Spread out within the parking grid and jog forward and back across a few spaces for a five minute warmup. Circle up nearby for some of the usual, including SSHs, IWs, DQs, Merkins, and so on.

Jog to the nearby covered pickleball courts for mobile Super 21 starting with one Merkin and one Reverse Crunch on one side of the far covered court. Move to the other side of the court and finish two of each. Mosey to the second covered court and add reps. Continue through 21 reps of each exercise. Break at 5, 10, 15, and 20 reps with called core exercises.

Return to the parking lot for starfish variant, starting near the center of the lot and moving OYO to each the four corners for 15 reps each of four exercises, including Carolina Dry Docks and Squats followed by one Burpee on a pass back through the middle on the way to the next corner. Repeat, but with 20 reps each.

Return to the pickleball area, spreading out on the bleachers for Step Ups and Dips. Return to the main parking lot for COT. Coffee at the usual spot after.

  • No more hate

We had 15 HIMS attend Chicharon’s first Queue. He celebrated turning 40. He also brought a FNG from Michigan.  FNG was presented with the title of Diesel. We did activities in sets of 4 including 4 corners, 40 count Lindsey, and 4 burpee marches. We celebrated the end with no more hate and now a decade of silence.
