See Cliff Notes discussion about St. Augustine at the bottom.

“My favorite song is ‘Blowin in the Wind’ by Peter Pollen Mary.” I didn’t come up with that, so don’t blame me.

    COT

For no particular reason, I wanted to learn little bit about St. Augustine. Most of the following is copied out of Wikipedia.

St. Augustine is from North Africa. St. Augustine Florida, the oldest city in the US is named after him.

St. Augustine lived from November 13, 354 AD – August 28, 430 AD

Augustine is the patron saint of brewers, printers and theologians.

    • He helped formulate the doctrine of Original Sin. (I’ve heard Original Sin described as “The Only Empirically Verifiable Doctrine of the Christian Faith”.)
    • Augustine took the view that, if a literal interpretation contradicts science and humans’ God-given reason, the biblical text should be interpreted metaphorically. While each passage of Scripture has a literal sense, this “literal sense” does not always mean the Scriptures are mere history; at times they are rather an extended metaphor.
    • While not breaking down the conditions necessary for war to be just, Augustine coined the phrase in his work The City of God. In essence, the pursuit of peace must include the option of fighting for its long-term preservation. Such a war could not be pre-emptive, but defensive, to restore peace. Thomas Aquinas, centuries later, used the authority of Augustine’s arguments in an attempt to define the conditions under which a war could be just
    • Augustine was among the earliest to examine the legitimacy of the laws of man, and attempt to define the boundaries of what laws and rights occur naturally, instead of being arbitrarily imposed by mortals. All who have wisdom and conscience, he concludes, are able to use reason to recognize the lex naturalis, natural law. Mortal law should not attempt to force people to do what is right or avoid what is wrong, but simply to remain just. Therefore “an unjust law is no law at all“. People are not obligated to obey laws that are unjust, those that their conscience and reason tell them violate natural law and rights.

    Dear Lord,

We thank you for the wisdom of the ancients. Much of what we wrestle with today, learned people wrestled with long ago. Amen!

  • Grid Iron St Patrick’s Day Weekend

11 of us gathered at Grid Iron, not knowing it was about to be a St Patrick’s Day theme with some familiar exercises…just with some “Oh” or ”Ohhhh” reactions.

Warmup and then to the soccer field for a modified 4 Corners…the Four Leaf Clover. 5 Burpees at midfield every time and 25 Merkins, Carolina Dry Docks, Squats and WWIIs at each corner. But the “Oh” was to add a Burpee at the end of every exercise, in addition to the 5 at midfield. (29 total Burpees).

Then we took a break (that means Abs). 4 sets of 25: WWIs, Crunchy Frogs, Plank Side Crunches, and the new O’Merican Hammer (later called the Irish Hammer) which is a two count ‘Merican Hammer but dropping your back to the ground on the third county for a sit up, then coming up again.

Mosey to the other field with the hill for 7’s (American Hammers and Merkins). Then a Dora of 100 Merkins, 200 Lunges/Squats, and 300 Heal Raises. Took another break (more Abs) for 4 sets of 25: Side Crunches, Heals to Heaven, and Knee Ups. Then an O’Lindsay (Modified Lindsay): 30-10, 20-20, 10-30: Steps up with a Knee Raise at the top, and Dips with 1 leg raised.

Some stretching, and then headed to the wall for 30 Mike Tysons between 15 People’s Chair, Milkers, and Muhammad Ali’s. Finished with more stretching…and we’re done. Gypsy said we had about 1.5 miles between all of those Abs and Chests. Nice!

Great work by the PAX today, and welcome to Gridiron Tailspin.  Needless to say Tailspin and Gomer hit it off given their common bond of having served our country.  Thankfully White Deer did not make him hate us. YHC usually is dragging on Saturday after a long week.  No different today.  Therefore, it is obvious that YHC must hate himself for this beat-down.

Lunch on Tuesday at Joey’s.  Continued prayers for Fireman Ed and Roger Roger.

God is good all of the time!

  • Almost Never

A dozen posted for the final GridIron in February. Mosey from the old parking lot to the nearby new one. Spread out within the parking grid and jog forward and back across a few spaces for a five minute warmup. Circle up nearby for some of the usual, including SSHs, IWs, DQs, Merkins, and so on.

Jog to the nearby covered pickleball courts for mobile Super 21 starting with one Merkin and one Reverse Crunch on one side of the far covered court. Move to the other side of the court and finish two of each. Mosey to the second covered court and add reps. Continue through 21 reps of each exercise. Break at 5, 10, 15, and 20 reps with called core exercises.

Return to the parking lot for starfish variant, starting near the center of the lot and moving OYO to each the four corners for 15 reps each of four exercises, including Carolina Dry Docks and Squats followed by one Burpee on a pass back through the middle on the way to the next corner. Repeat, but with 20 reps each.

Return to the pickleball area, spreading out on the bleachers for Step Ups and Dips. Return to the main parking lot for COT. Coffee at the usual spot after.

  • No more hate

We had 15 HIMS attend Chicharon’s first Queue. He celebrated turning 40. He also brought a FNG from Michigan.  FNG was presented with the title of Diesel. We did activities in sets of 4 including 4 corners, 40 count Lindsey, and 4 burpee marches. We celebrated the end with no more hate and now a decade of silence.

  • Sleet covered Gridiron, can’t stop Pigskin

Here is what went down on this beautiful Feb morning. Mosey to the covered Pickleball courts for warm-ups: side straddle hops, Don Qs, helicopters, LBC’s, Merkins. We Attempted a four corners, cumulative with five Merkins, 10 jump squats, 15 LBC‘s, 20 reverse crunches. The area was  just too small to really make work so we mosied over to the bus loop: 26 pole smokers and 26 Merkins. Next: Triple check: American hammers, squats, and runner as the pacer. Mosey towards Striker Park with a  stop at the pull up bars, three sets of 10 pull-ups and 15 dips. Mosey over to striker Park soccer field. We divided into two teams since it’s a Super Bowl weekend. four vs four with tater as the full-time quarterback, so he didn’t injure himself. The field had a nice layer of sleet covering it which proved to be slippery and made for an entertaining game. Piglet was the star of the day scoring three touchdowns. Highlight of the day was Pigskin’s kickoff return for a touchdown while juking out three opponents avoiding the tags. The game ended with a Handshake 200 yard touchdown run on a slight diagonal path outrunning the opponents and scoring a touchdown(hmmmm) about 100 yards out of bounds. We laughed and enjoyed ourselves in the sleet and cold, escaping without any additional injuries. We headed back to the flag and finished with 26 merkins and 26 reverse crunches to complete the “52” needed because Atilla complained when we left the bus loop that I didnt hit my 52 of each.  Numbers & Names, I took us out in Prayer. J-ville joined us a coffee afterwards. Thanks for allowing me to lead and coming out for my 52nd birthday Q. F3 has truly been one of the best things in my life and I am grateful for this body of men. See you in the gloom!

  • ‘Merican Merkin Hammer

Twelve of us were at Grid Iron this morning, prior to a post F3 workout of moving Pinto in to his new crib (I know I’m old if I still use “crib”).

After a brief warm up we headed to the turf field for:

Cardio- 100 yards of Burpees every 10 yards, followed by 50 yards of Ukrainian Soldiers

Abs- 5 rounds of 20: WWIs, Crunchy Frogs, Merican Hammers, Side Crunches and some crazy leg lift and arm reach thingy

Cardio- Double Grinder-Triple Check of 50 yards with Dips and Carolina Dry Docks and then Step Ups and Lunges

Abs (again)- 5 rounds of 20: WWIs, Heals to Heaven, Reverse Crunches, Merican Hammers, Box Cutters

Arms/Abs- Finished with a modified Ring of Fire of 5 Merkins of your choice, followed by 20 ‘Merican Hammers, followed by round of Gomer’s Up/Downs, then 20 ‘Merican Hammers, and finally Ring of Fire of Merkins again.

  • Deflation, hole insertion, jacking, nut

Sicko. We are talking about changing a tire here. Helping our dear friend Tater fix a flat.

Poor Tater popped a tire wall at the local recycling drop off. Nevertheless, he was waiting for a Heist beatdown, flat tire and all, at good old Grid Iron.

Warmorama: Lap around the frozen soccer field. Circle up for SSH, CHS, Deadman hangs, butt string stretches, LBCs, Roscos Mom, merkins, Wilson and Fudd.

Thang 1: Mosey to Mt Pigskin for 11s. Start with one squat. Up Hill. 10 merkins. Work to 10 squat and 1 merkin. 20 second count from Bluemoon.

Thang 2: Worked our way to pullup bars. For a triple check. Took a little while to figure this out with 11 dudes, but no problem. Runner to bridge and back (about 75 yards or so). Partners 2 and 3/4 did dips and pullups. The cold bar didn’t bother me because I have both heated gloves (Savior Heat) and SOJ gloves (Axeman tractor supply).

Thang 3: Worked our way to pickle ball courts for a nice Dojo Dan martial arts session. Kicks, punches, etc. Nice way to recuperate for what came next: Four corners, prostitute style with the following exercises:

    1. 5 burpees (you end up doing 35).
    2. 10 merkins
    3. 15 SSH
    4. 20 squat jumps

Lots of grumbling, but it’s good for you after all ! I think Hermey gave us another 20 count.

Thang 4: Guys started shedding some hats, and jackets at this point after putting in the work. With the next 10 to 15 minutes we did step ups on the picnic tables, two minute wall sit, 1 cool down lap around the soccer field, followed by some stretching.

    Numbers/Names.

    Frozen Triangle in two weeks.

Pray for guys in the Pax going through a rough patch and/or on IR.

Moleskin: Great team effort fixing a flat. Shutout to Hermey, Pigskin and Bluemoon for providing a helping hand to Tater. The combination of past experience and YouTube lead the way. I do not think we will beat Nascar any time soon, but it is a start.

Solid coffeerama at Bux. Thanks to Tater for covering coffee. Great seeing Fireman Ed and Chumbucket.
