  • A Slaughter at Heartbreak Ridge

A lucky 13 posted for another round of Ultimate with Fudd. The field was wet but spirits were high as we moseyed to the field, set up the cones, warmed up, and then attempted to separate into teams. This turned out a bit different as YHC had intended…….initially, 2 “captains” were selected (Bodos & NTB) and asked to pick players. The intent was to have two teams of similar ability. However, Captain Bodos revolted at this, saying, “I’m not doing that!! I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings!” Fair enough and noted for next time. So instead, the PAX that happened to be standing in closest proximity to the two captains coalesced around their leaders and separated for the match. It just so happened that all of the skinny, fast, young players happened to be standing around Bodos and most of the older, fat, slower players (YHC included) were standing near NTB. No surprise with what happened next…….

Exercises: If a team scored a goal they did 15 SSH’s…..the team scored against had to do 5 burpees. Bodos’s team roared to a quick lead, scoring 4 goals in maybe 10 minutes. Hops (F3 C’ville), High School Musical (F3 Cary), Bodos, and Pinto were the standout players. Hops in particular was as fast as greased lightning and his team took to the strategy quickly of just throwing it as far downfield as possible and expecting him to streak down and catch it, which he did 9 times out of 10. Bodos amazed everyone with catch after catch that defied belief, often diving or leaping headlong with a disregard for his body that would have no doubt injured many of the other players present. After his team scored the 5th or 6th goal, Hops seemed to slow down, no doubt out of pity for the other team, as we started to see less of his streaks downfield.

NTB’s team did score several goals despite the MANY burpees they had been completing between kickoffs. There were several noteable plays, including a burst of speed from Gumbo to catch a long pass that reminded everyone of Bodos or Hops. The rest of the team did their best, and we were all smoked by the end, despite the lack of goals scored. Final score was around 10-2. YHC perceived that there were some hurt feelings as players moseyed back to the VSF, but at least everyone could agree that a good workout was had by all.

Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Ultimate tournament at NoToll on Aug. 6th.

    Never stop chasing the Wabbit!

Then over to basketball hoops. 10 HRMs at each hoop with bear crawl & lunge between. 2nd round was Jump Squats.

  • Groaning Ridge

8 HIM’s with an appreciation for cool temps and hard things assembled at Heartbreak for the annual DYH summer tour Q. No frisbees or cabers, just a classic ride on the pain train. Here’s what the aged vet witnessed as he stood saluting the shovel flag for the duration of the beatdown:

    The THANG:

    Mosey BTTF for COT:

    • Counterama # 8

    • Announcerama (see Below)
    • YHC took the PAX out in Prayer

NMS:  Aaaahhhh yes, good old Heartbreak Ridge where once upon a time I did my VQ. Love these fellas. That said, it was disturbing to start the day with the sound of Senior Frog repeatedly grunting his own name – perhaps the Q might have better explained the Morning Call routine before we started? That’s OK, he made up for it by “complementing” the OPUS reps, which if you think about it, are really just super slow burpees. The KILO-Dora (1000 reps) didn’t disappoint and we covered a lot of distance and time completing it, really only leaving about 13 minutes for the 21’s. After hearing the chorus of groans that issued from the PAX upon learning of our final destination, the Q decided the AO might be better called “Groaning Ridge” …but it was a solid burn to end our time, and the PAX appreciated it, even though they hated it. The Summer Tour continues! SYITG another time soon. Yours AYE! ~DTH

    Announcements (SEE SLACK!)

    • DRY JULY – join us, give something up, get stronger and healthier!
    • Book Club – 7pm tonight at Dunkin (Pump & Patterson)
    • Thur, July 4th Convergence, Forrest Hill Park – FIELD DAY (bring your families!)
    • Next Tue West End Lunch & SOJ 2nd F
  • Live Free or Die Hard

In the 4th installment of the franchise, and the first to take place on the 4th of July and not during the Christmas season, some terrorist group creates chaos by messing with communications, transportation and electricity. I tried to prepare our group of nine for those circumstances.

We moseyed to the front of the school for some warmups on SSH, IW, DQ, Merkins, Plank Jacks and LBCs. We then went around the fence at the bus loop and took on the hill between schools. Like the movie (and life), this hill has its ups and downs. We did 11’s of Jump Squats and HRMs and the exercise you started with depended on whether your birthday had occurred or not. That made some uncomfortable. This was a long set of 11s.

We then ran to the back blacktop and worked on modes of transportation: bunny hops, bear crawls, crab walks, lunges and running and we did different versions two times.

To eventually work our way back to Heartbreak Ridge, and thinking of the summer, we hit the softball field and did 7’s of burpees and merkins.

We then moseyed to the top of Heartbreak Ridge and reenacted an elevator scene wear McLane takes out the attractive double agent Maggie Q. We crawl beared down the hill and ran back up twice.

After moseying back to the flag, we did some flutters, reverse crunches and LBCs to end the day.

I don’t think we learned anything today but we did get about 2 miles in. A good day to die hard is coming.

Prayers for my father-in-law John and Wildcat.

Enjoy the day and thanks for letting me lead.

  • What happens at the Jerkin gym

11 West End Gentlemen and 2 Southsiders set off after decisions were made by the Q and others to forego the gloves. An uneven prime number threw off plans for triple checks or Dora. After a warmup highlighted with proper Hillbillies, the real fun began.

Heartbreak Hill 6 pack – Jump Squats at the top, HRM at the bottom. Next to the jerkin gym where Whitesnake skipped and did a lap to heal his wrist (no word whether the injury was from solo jerkins). Partner up for decreasing ladder of 5-1 jerkins. Half a lap to the bleachers for Lindsey – Bench Kicks and lunges.

Repeato – back to the hill for a 6 pack of V-ups and Monkey Humpers. Jerkin Gym – 5 to 1. Lindsey – Bulgarian Split Squats and WWII. Close with some Mary.

Great to be out at Heartbreak with the Fabulous Gypsy and others. The namesake hill and jerkin gym are 2 of my favorite spots so we had to visit those twice. Despite his graceful fall yesterday, Pigskin was back out for more, he may have been slightly slower but Atilla kept him company. This may not have been a tough enough workout for Senor Frog who could not be heard hacking at all this morning, he has a routine in the morning that does not include the jerkin gym. Despite being assured that Ultimate frisbee was unlikely, Honeydo was not there to enjoy the benck kicks.

West End 2nd F Lunch – today at Firehouse Subs in Innsbrook

3rd F book discussion @ Dunkin – #5 of Jordan Peterson’s rules, come to discuss the rule, maybe not the writing style

    2nd F @ Snuff’s 7:45 pm, in Bon Air – See Slack for details.

Prayers for Fudd’s sister and others with relatives that are struggling with illness.

Thanks for letting me cross the river to lead, always a pleasure to see familiar faces in an unfamiliar location. SOJ takeover continues this week – Locals holding down the fort at SOT/MOT, Crossing, and Ruckhenge, get some strong SOJ energy at WaThaHuk, giddy up at First Watch, sing along at Wdog, and bringing some flowers on a Manndate.

  • He’s got Wilfred Brimley Thighs

A terrific ten found it sunny and 70 to start at Heartbreak this morning. After rearranging our normal parking around the 200 extra buses in the parking lot we did:

COP on back blacktop: SSH, Don Qs, Imperial Walkers, Helicopters, Merkins, Flutterkicks, Scorpion Kicks.

Partner up for Dora 123: 100 Derkins, 200 Jump Squats, 300 Benchkicks. Over to tennis courts for 4 rounds of wheelbarrows & 10 Derkins. Mosey down to Jerkin Gym with a stop along the way of the tunnel of love on the bars. 4 rounds of 7 Jerkins. Finish up with a few trips up & down Heartbreak Hill to give Last Call his $s worth.

Announcements: Ruck on Thursday afternoon for D-day 80th. 2nd F Tuesday lunch on the 11th at Firehouse. Prayers offered up for Fudd’s sister and Splinter’s mom.

NMS: Solid PAX with Last Call making his Virgin post at HBR. He was impressed with the options and space at Heartbreak and we only covered half the AO. Atilla was nursing an injury but still pushed through. YHC was hoping Senor Frog might spill some merlot on the pavement at the end but he was just doing his normal hacking. Some solid mumblechatter as Last Call visited the Jerkin Gym for the 1st time, hence the BB title.

  • Die Hard with a Vengeance

Nine movie fans were super happy to take part in another Die Hard morning at Heartbreak. We started with a review of Die Hard and Die Hard 2. That started with running up and down Heartbreak Ridge 8 times and doing a warm up exercise in between including Cherry Pickers, Ukrainian Soldiers, Imperial Walkers, Hillbilly’s, Merkins, Copperhead Squats, and Arm circles (each direction separately). With the stairs to the 9th floor blocked, we hit the ventilation shaft and Bear crawled up the hill and ran back down twice. We separated those with an ode to Die Hard 2 and some Bird Dogs and then Plank Bird Dogs.

The basic premise of the third Die Hard movie is solving riddles to stop a bomb. I had three riddles (two from the movie and one I made up) and Burpee Bombs planned if the riddles were not solved correctly.

First riddle was from the movie and involved a man going to St. Ives. It is a riddle hidden in a math problem distraction. Like John McLain, the Pax failed and did not have Zeus (Samuel Jackson) to find the simple solution. We did ten burpees to light the fuse and then went to the baseball field and split up on the bases. Home plate was the timer at ten burpees while each base also did burpees until relieved by the previous base. Roughly 40 burpees later, it was time for another riddle.

The second riddle involved the school name change 8 years ago (which the Pax got-Byrd) but did not connect it to the next location, the basketball courts. Another Burpee Bomb exploded. We partnered up and one partner did an exercise at the wall while the other ran to the opposite end and did ten burpees before coming back to switch. We rotated through exercises and 9,8,7,6,5 burpees until we finished. 45 burpees later and rounds of flutters, reverse crunches, LBCs, peoples chair with milkers, heals to heaven and jump squats and we had one more riddle from the movie.

“What has four legs and is always ready to travel?”. Lighthouse got the answer (An Elephant) so we went back to the flag and never got to 100 burpees. Old Handshake was sad: “More Burpees” he said. Instead we did some Plank Jacks, LBCs and SSH to end the morning.

The first of the non-Christmas themed Die Hard’s, Die Hard with a Vengeance is a great movie. None afterwards are worth a watch so I will need to wait until Christmas time for a Die Hard only Q. I think we can defeat Hans Gruber and his crew again. Heartbreak Ridge will be waiting for us, maybe with some snow next time.
