  • Curls for the girls

7 prime PAX joined in a post twister Heartbreak Ridge edition.   Warmup with 20 SSH, HC’s, wide grip Merkins & LBC’s.   Start it up with a 4 corners – 20 each compounding for calf raises, jump squats, flutters & mt. climbers.   No longer will our biceps be ignored at Heartbreak – concrete props allowed for 30x “curls for the girls” while the PAX held plank.  Mosey to the walkway for a 2x backwards bear crawl up / rail crawl down followed by 30x decline WWII on the ridge.      Since there happen to be 131 fence posts around the track infield, it was fitting that we partnered up and ran 1 lap including 131 Merkins and 131 bench kicks (where was Honeydo?) and a 2nd lap with 131 American Hammers.   Wrap-up with 30x additional curls alternating while the crew ran hills on Heartbreak Mini.    Bulging biceps – complete.

  • A fitting location to remember 9/11

Seven Stalwarts showed up to carry the shovelflag around and enjoy the fog. First we did a lap with the flag in solidarity with the other RVA AOs. Then we did:

COP- Ssh, Don Qs, Helicopters, Merkins, Reverse Crunch, Imperial Walkers. Mosey to Pemberton ES side to check out new construction. Totem pole leg raise then Burpee Arrow loops and back to QMS. 5 Box Jumps & 10 Derkins.  More rounds increasing each by 5.  Stop for 25 WWII Situps.

Down to Jerkin Gym- 4 sets of 8 Jerkins. Then 3 times up Heartbreak Hill with Jumpsquats at top. Back to Jerkin Gym for 2 more sets of 10 Jerkins. Back with Flag & some Mary.

NMS- Vinnie made sure all the AOs kept Old glory on display this morning. YHC thought of some theme ideas to remember 9/11 but instead for a standard beatdown. In the COT YHC was glad to bring up Alysia Burton, a fellow WM grad from my year, who died on 9/11.  She attended Byrd MS and when they renamed the school recently there was talk of naming the school after her. YHC thought it a nice tribute to honor her memory at Heartbreak Ridge along with others.

The trip to Pemberton side of the AO was uneventful as there isn’t much there so why not knock out 30 burpees. The Jerkin Gym grass had recently been cut so all our shoes got covered in grass. Mumble chatter was light as the humidity took it out the Pax.

Announcements – Convergence 9/22 and Csaup run next month on 10/20.

  • Track Beast, The Hard Way

A PAX five strong arrived for the first day of school: “lunch packed up, shoes tied tight, hope I don’t get in a fight…”

While this morning’s beatdown was short on obscure trivia, YHC did his best to make up for it in sweat and effort, as we did things The Hard Way. Here’s what went down:

Mosey down beside the track for COP: SSH, Helicopters, DQ, LBCs. Mosey on track to a 50-yard line for a Track Beast…

Track Beast works the same as any other beast, just with more running. Stations at each corner and 50-yard line, and PAX performs six of the given exercise at each station, completing a lap in the process. Since we were doing it The Hard Way, each exercise compounds on the previous, so that each station on the final lap had:

    • merkins
    • squats
    • WWIIs
    • mountain climbers
    • American hammers
    • burpees

Time was called as PAX worked to finish up this final round – which means the might roar of the Track Beast will be heard again at Heartbreak Ridge. Unfinished business and all that.

    MOLESKIN

Couldn’t think of a better way to start a new school year than taking the Q this morning! YHC is really getting into these intensive 45 minute-long activities that the PAX has to really push to complete! As Fall approaches and the heat and humidity subside a bit, this will be a bit more tenable. But in the meantime, keep the sweat rolling.

Shout out to Loose Goose for staying the course amidst a tight squeeze or two.

  • “Any Questions?” “…why…”

Eight young gentlemen showed up ready to take on another Tuesday, only to find that they had no fearless leader. Not to be undone by this captain-less ship, a hot potato Q was called. Here’s what YHC can remember:

    LOOSE GOOSE

COP: invisible jump rope, Russian soldiers, kickbacks, LBCs. Mosey across parking lot for curb crawls (merkin escalator 1-11 on each end). You vs. You in deciding to crawl bear on return trip or turn around.

    GARBAGE PLATE

Parking-lot-tracers-meet-indian-runs: Each man holding plank in a parking spot, last man runs tracers to the front. Continue across until PAX is all on the wall @ People’s Chair. Back across to finish up.

    FLANGE

Partners: 100 donkey kicks, 200 LBCs, 300 side straddle hops. One man running the hill while other working on the numbers.

Mosey to Jerkin Gym, for escalating sets: 6,7,8

    MR HOLLAND

Mosey to Heartbreak Ridge. Time was short, so PAX had to fit in as much as possible! Partners, then partners form groups of 4. One team partner carries up HBR, other team @ bottom for PLTs. Switch until you’ve done everything, time permitting.

Mosey to flag, numbers, names, ‘nouncements.

YHC has little by way of sentimentality or snark this morning. Way to work, men – and well done on all the impromptu beatdowns from each Q.

  • Curiosity Mounts

Crushed box of Newports. Opened wrapper wrapper.  Do I really want to look?  Never.

Maybe? No. I dont need to see that.  Not again.

    Curiosity builds.

Just a quick scan.  Yes, there it is.

What glorious events previously occurred in this place?

Aiming to improve our Middle School reputation, 6 stalwarts are ready for another school year and we gathered in the cool morn at Quioccasin Byrd Middle School.  This is how it went down.

    NMS

Ahh middle school- who doesnt yearn for those awkward years.  I have never understood why that is something you are supposed to say,  YHC really doesnt yearn for those days.   After a summer away, YHC returned to school to fulfill the 5th step in the Troop Leading Procedure (thats RECON as any institute grads will tell you). On my QBMS recon last night the parking lot was clean.  Apparently the parking lot got some use last night as the Western Wildcats and their parents enjoyed first practice of the season.  Perfect practice makes perfect in the Wildcat nation!  Lets get it on!

Minimal mumble chatter today since we dropped right in without a COP.  YHC wanted to make sure that we all got a good tri workout so I started with AMRAP dips.  YHC wanted to level the field a bit for what comes next, we still have no idea how many we can do – but its a lot.   No more soccer arms.

YHC has been thinking about how typically we are neglecting the lats and upper back – and how tough that is to do outside.  Curious how the PAX like the lat pulls on the short cage.

    Great work from everyone today.

    Reputation improved?  Check!

  • Heartbreak Ridge secured by Henrico’s finest

6 studs came out to Heartbreak Ridge on a cool, almost fall-like, morning. We did:

COP – Invisible Jumprope, Don Qs, Helicopters, Merkins, Flutterkicks. Mosey to Honeysuckle Hill.

Triple check – Donkey Kicks, Squats, and Bernie Sanders up Honeysuckle hill. Head to tennis courts- Wheelbarrow from baseline to net, 10 Derkins. Each man does 4 times. Over to basketball court.

10 WWII situps each hoop, bear crawl between hoops. Down to Jerkin Gym. 4 sets of 8 Jerkins. Benchkicks sets of 30, 35, and 40.

Heartbreak Hill- Up, 10 Merkins, and down. 5 times. Back to Jerkin Gym for AMRAP set. Back to flag, some Mary, then Atilla took us out.

NMS – YHC forgot he had signed up to Q until EF Hutton reminded him last night at Punisher. On our initial mosey a police car sped by and hit his siren announcing the whole AO had been secured, which was important since this was Rosie’s first post at HBR.

We started actually at 5 but Mr Holland got in at the COP to make it a perfect 6 pax. We had 2 more of Henrico’s finest pass while on Honeysuckle hill. YHC has not Qed enough with the summer tour so he wanted to get in his favorites: Donkey Kicks, Wheelbarrow, and Benchkicks.

Everyone brought it this morning. Bromance keeps getting stronger,  Phonics and Rosie set the pace, and Atilla was happy to hit the Jerkin Gym. Rosie was impressed we have a specific Jerkin set for us. Mr Holland was glad for the Jerkins to match his sleeves Guns Out look.

Heartbreak Hill always sucks, but even more so when your shoes weigh 5 lbs with the dew.

Announcements – 6pack CSAUP and endurance CSAUP in October. Labor day convergence with Daville taking the lead, albeit at a Henrico AO.

    Silent Assassin signing off.

  • Solid Start to a Tuesday

Five strong redwoods ignored the mighty force of the fartsack to embrace any and all challenges that lie ahead on this last day of July 2018, which like many lately appears to be void of sunlight.  Here is how it went down:

    • COP
      • 25 SSH
      • 15 IW
      • 10 cherry pickers
      • 10 2x merkins
      • 25 2x LBC
      • 15 arm circles (10 small/5 big) – each direction
    • Mosey to black top for four corners – 10, 15, 20 & 25 reps at each corner followed by 10 burpees in between exercises
      • WWII sit-ups
      • Squats
      • Merkins
      • 2x flutter kicks
    • Mosey to HB Hill for 10 hill runs
    • Mosey to the jerkin gym for 3x 8 reps
    • Mosey to the bleachers for 25 bench kicks, run ½ track to other bleachers for 25 more bench kicks
    • 5 bernies
    • COT with YHC taking us out

Welcome to F3 Mannschaft.  Of Austrian decent, the German futbol fan had a strong showing on his virgin posting.  T-claps to Seymour for bringing this FNG into the fold.

YHC got a text from Loose Goose at 4:45 am lamenting a long night of little sleep with small children, which lead to his absence.  Hopefully he can lead a 2.0 workout in Glen Gary tonight to ensure deep sleep from his little warriors.  See you later this week Loose Goose.

Bromance continues to regularly post despite shoulder issues.  Good work and happy healing!

Finally, the transformation of Mr. Holland in the last year is another highlight of the day.  It helps to still be in the hate zone, but that boy is getting after it.  He even challenged the swift-footed Seymour on the hill runs…impressive!

Good work by the PAX.  It was a pleasure leading this group.  As always, enjoyed the fellowship that comes with a shared beatdown!  God is good all of the time!

  • MSA

5 brave posts to Heartbreak Ridge for a Garbage Plate VQ this morning.  Those with kids know how much time you spend just moving stuff around (MSA) the house.  Today was MSA Heartbreak Ridge.

The pax warmed up with 15 x SSH, 10 x HC, JL, merkins.  MSA kicked off passing a pile of bricks down the pax line while doing squats.  First person goes to end of the line after passing all the bricks and the pattern continues in true Native American style.   After about 90 brick squats each, mosey to the retaining wall for 30 x dips & donkey kicks.

Next on to triple check MSA with monkey humpers, flutter kicks and a run to retrieve a book from the Quioccasin little free library.   After emptying the little free library and finishing the triple check, group MSA books back into the library.  Pax left the library better than we found it and added two books.   That’s just what we do at Heartbreak Ridge.

Mosey to choose your own adventure on the far side of the school – each could travel the length of the bus lane doing either 23 x burpies, 46 x squat jumps, or 60 x merkins.  Followed up with 30 inclined WWII’s with a partner on Heartbreak Hill.   Traversed to a bear crawl beast on the upper basketball courts with 6xSSH’s at each stop.  Finally made our way to the track & wrapped up a MSA morning by transporting 105 golf balls from the bottom to the top of Heartbreak Ridge, carrying 1x forward or 2x Bernie style.

Great morning – super humid.  Well done by all.  Thx to Mr Holland for a brief cameo ~6:20.

  • We DID do 10 Burpees

    Then we had fun….

12 12 year olds showed up for play time at Heartbreak.  We skipped most of the workout stuff and went straight in for the kill….if “the kill” means playing a game.  6 on 6 meant lots of running and nowhere to hide.  Workout was gotten.

Geez, this morning was a blast, even though I once again was on the losing end until the final score.  Everybody that posted is ready for another round of ULTIMATE, we just have to figure out when. I am not going to give a breakdown of the game, because it won’t do it justice.  Keep your eyes peeled for the next ULTIMATE “workout”, as we need to get them in quick before the daylight fades on us.

    Lab Rat apologizes…

  • Ok, Ok we will stay off the field

Six strong, including a FNG, made it out to HBR to see if the fields are in better shape. We did:

Mosey to top field, botched disclaimer then COP of SSH, Don Qs, Merkins, Flutterkicks Scorpion Kicks, and Imperial Walkers .

Head over to DK wall for Dora 123. 100 Donkey Kicks, 200 Jump Squats, 300 LBCs. Head down to Jerkin Gym. 4 sets of 8 Jerkins. Then over to benches for 3 sets of Benchkicks and Derkins. First set: 40&10, then 35&15, 30&20.

Head back to Heartbreak Hill – Up, 15 WWII situps, then down. 2 more times up, decreasing WWIIs by 5. Then Jerkin Gym again: 4 sets of 5.

Back to flag for mary, then Atilla took us out.

NMS – YHC wasn’t sure what kind of pax we would have with several regulars out but ended up with perfect 6 Pax number. Welcome Kasem, our FNG who EF Hutton EH’ed. Nice work this morning, all without losing your keys.  YHC was sure to avoid the football field that now has 2 signs on it saying stay off unless approved. Not a lot of mumblechatter as the temperature was in charge. At least with the lack of rain the grass was dry and no bugs were out.

YHC screwed up in the COP by welcoming everyone to Hoedown, wrong day. Then apparently on the hill runs YHC said only 2 times up but when we did a 3rd time Hutton said he appreciated the challenge.

Garbage Plate still hates Benchkicks. Bromance put in good work and Atilla was his steady self.

Announcements – Convergence tomorrow. Be there at 7 at Tredegar.
