Tuckahoe Elementary

  • Hoedown back to RVAs darkest AO

Eight PAX set their alarm correctly to the new DST and found warmer temps awaiting them. We started with:

COP in the Gaga Pit: SSH, Don Qs, Derkins, Flutterkicks, Scorpion Kicks. Mosey to Tuckahoe Shopping Center. Pleasants Hardware was close so we did Wheelbarrow across lot and back. Head over to Kuba Kuba Dos for:

Dora 123: 100 Donkey Kicks, 200 Merkins, 300 Jump Squats. Then 3 sets of 30 PLTs. Head back to TES, to back field for: Airborne Jerkins on the Monkey Bar Rings: 4 Sets of 8. Head to blacktop lot: Bear Crawl across, 25 WWIIs, Crawl back then 20 more WWIIs. Finish up with Freddy Mercurys and American Hammers. COT & YHC took us out.

NMS – Good to see some Hoedown originals back out this morning, even better when Lockjaw and Saab run in to the AO. The DST change reminded everyone how very dark TES is in the morning so we spent a good while off campus.

After Kubota pointed out the new Gaga Ball pit he was not here to break it in this morning. We learned the pit fits 8 snugly, that is about max capacity. Not much to it besides ability for Derkins and the reverberation of Saab groaning on the Don Qs are much clearer.

YHC wasn’t planning on wheelbarrows until Fireman Ed reminded him of a previous Q where we did those right in the Zing Fit lot and had to dodge cars pulling in. The Pleasants Hardware part of the lot has less traffic but the lot is wider.

Lots of partner work this morning. The Airborne Jerkins worked well but the PAX had different methods of getting their legs on the mans shoulders. YHC was not ready for the first round where Handshake grabbed the rings, vaulted his legs up and onto YHC’s shoulders in one graceful move.

Annoucements: Roger Roger VQ is tomorrow at Heartbreak Ridge. Will he test out the Jerkin Gym mud? Use the Cinder Blocks? Dare to go onto the Football Field? Post tomorrow morning to see what he has planned!

  • Ed’s Random Number Generator

8 above average PAX including myself braved the 35 degree somewhat breezy conditions to get a good workout.

The workout went something like this:

Warm-up: Mosey to the Rite Aid and do 25 side straddle hops, 10 Don Quixotes, 13 LBCs, 7 forward arm circles, 6 backward arm circles. Honey Do was remarking on my odd counts and asked if I had a random number generator to which the answer is yes.

Exercise 1: Doras with 100 merkins, 200 jump squats and 300 two count flutter kicks while the partner runs around the Rite Aid.

Exercise 2: Cross the street. Same partner. Partner 1 does 5 merkins, partner 2 bear crawls, Partner 1 catches up to partner 2 and they switch.

Exercise 3: Go to the driest ground in RVA; otherwise known as Bodos’ backyard. Share 100 PLTs.

Exercise 4: Using what little I know about the NFL combine (did you see that a 260 pound defensive lineman ran a 4.41?) I had the PAX try 3 attempts at the 40 yard or meter dash (Offshore and Garbage Plate appeared to be the fastest) and then try 3 attempts at the 60 yard or meter shuttle. Kubota did a Forrest Gump like over run on the first attempt (Stop Kubota Stop). Upchuck made a failed attempt at recasting the “Hi Roger” event from a couple months ago.

We finished with 25 plank jacks, 30 American Hammers, 25 2 count mountain climbers and 25 side straddle hops.

No announcements of note and the Fireman closed in prayer. It was good to see Splinter back in action.

  • Run ahead, young bull – I will walk

7 redwoods gathered for a Pacific Northwest spring day contemplating 70 and sunny thoughts and the upcoming bikini season.

After determining that no one signed up to Q, hot potato was the call.

Handshake – Mosey to first third church parking lot COP, 10x Russian Soldiers, 10x Copperhead Squat, 10x Imperial Walker, 10x 2 count Merkin, 25x LBC. 11s : Flutter Kicks and Merkin. Freddie Mercury for the 6.

Fireman Ed – Mosey to far parking lot. 4 corners 10 Burpee, 20 WWII, 30 Jump Squats, 40 LBC. Plank for 6.

Garbage Plate – Mosey to Bodos secret playground (jk) for oblique workout. Plank 30s. 25x left plank drops, 25x right, 25x oblique V up left, 25x right. 75% parking lot sprint, backwards run back.

Gomer Pyle – complete running workout 50% sprint, backwards run, 75%, 100%, 100%. Mosey to Tuckahoe parking lot. Bear Crawl to 12 arrows, 10 WW2 Situps on each arrow. Deep Al Gore for 6 + 30s. Mosey to jungle gym. 30 Pullups, 50 Merkin OYO. Mosey to flag. YHC took us out.

    Did I miss anything, gents?

    NMS

Discussion and reminders about GroRuck special events. Get ready boys! The NoVA Patriots are showing. Happy hour friday. Dredd is Q at a 7a DogPile. Leadership school follows. Then a casual evening stroll with friends – and a few stops along the way. Definitely will be a great event. Check out the pre Blast.

On the first mosey, Handshake seemed to be distracted by another running group. YHC seriously thought he was going to pass them so that the PAX could show their impressive forms, but then we ran across the street for the parking lot and COP. Later that same group came by during the bear crawl, but MOST of the PAX were too intensely focused on their summer goals to notice. Having run with that group in the daylight, YHC abides.

Which brings me to the parable of the day:

YB: Hey old bull, lets each run down this hill and get us one of those heifers.

OB: That’s a great idea, you run ahead young bull. I will walk and get the rest of them.

  • So I went to meet the President.. Again.. (VQ)

On the 140th year since Washington’s Birthday was made a Federal holiday, 10 brave men (at the minimum, all of them Vice Presidential caliber) took the field at Hoedown.

Observing mid-30s temps and a waning drizzle, the clouds parted, and off we went into 70 & sunny weather..

    Fun Facts from YHC:

    • Technically, the federal holiday is “Washington’s Birthday”. Many states have adopted the inclusion of other presidents into the holiday. Thus, ‘President’s Day’ is generally considered a day to honor incumbent and past presidents.
    • Washington’s actual birthday is 2/11/1731 on the old style calendar. When the British Empire adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752, his birthday was updated to 2/22/1732. However, the holiday is observed between Feb 15-21, never actually on Washington’s birthday.
    • How weird would it be to have your birthday change when you were 20 years old?? On second thought, I guess everyone was doing it, so..

…today’s workout paid some respect to Feb. 22nd (new calendar) and the 11th (old calendar).

    COP:

    • Side Straddle Hop x22
    • Windmill (no love for Russian soldiers on President’s Day) x22
    • Imperial Walker x22
    • Hatchet* x11

*New exercise, the Hatchet, aka Jack Merkins
Plank jack followed by a Merkin. Repeat
(named for GW’s cherry tree transgression, which has since been determined to be #fakenews)

Run North on Forest, West on Spottswood, bear left onto Silverspring, to lot behind 3rd Church.

Bear Crawl 1-2-3 (Dora’s obnoxious neighbor who stays up late partying)
Grab a ‘running mate’ (aka partner) and alternate bear crawl across the parking lot while the non-crawler is completing:

    • 45 Hatchets (for 45 current & past presidents)
    • 200 Mountain Climbers
    • 300 Copperhead Squats
    • When done, crab walk race your partner to other side, perform 10 burpees, repeat until PAX is done.

This led to some fun discussions of which partner would be running at the top of the ticket, and who would be the Veep.. Feel free to post results in comments.

Back to Last: Run to the END of the Tuckahoe blacktop, then back to last. Repeat until entire PAX is present.

    Prayer

    NMS:

I am incredibly thankful for this group.
Started a journey late summer to figure out a workout routine before baby #3 arrived, and here we are. Grateful to Don Draper for telling me about F3.

This group means more to me than I can express. Forged new friendships and have been encouraged and challenged (by both the PAX and myself) to build new disciplines in my life.

Thank you to all who encouraged me to VQ.

As I mentioned in prayer, make sure we are leaning on each other for encouragement / prayer when we have a need or are struggling with something.

    • If you need something, anything, talk to one of your brothers here.
    • If not, share what God has done in your life with someone this week.
Be bold, be strong, be courageous!

With that, Second Bell rings and Greenbow heads out to go catch baby boy #3.

  • Hoedown Hot Potato

One tractor, one car, one extreme J-E-T-S fan, one stock brokerage firm, one brand of vodka, one plate full of garbage/food and one secret agent attacked a hot potato at Hoedown this morning.  All the other regulars must have stayed up late watching the media circus crush the little girl from CBS trying to interview Brady after the game.

    Here’s what we did:

    Kubota Q:

Mosey around the parking lot waiting for a LIFO Loose Goose to join us and then head down to the bottom of Lindsay for:

COT, Numberama, Namearama, Announcements and Loose Goose took us out with a nice prayer to get our week started right!

Slurpee has next TWO Breaking Bread Q’s!  WOW!  He will need help, so please volunteer to help him.

    NMS:

Great work by all this morning.  A lot of running for a Hoedown Q (2.1 miles on my Garmin).  Saab ran to and fro the AO.  It was great having Loose Goose post at Hoedown.  One of the longest and hardest 11’s that anyone can perform.  Very little mumblechatter.  The Super Bowl was not Super enough to talk about.  Beautiful morning and great group of guys working hard together.  That’s about all you need.  Have a great week to all and See You In The Gloom!

    Kubota

    keep posting!

  • Perfect temps for January

Eleven eager men came out to Hoedown for the start of Super Bowl week.  38 degrees felt warm to many PAX some were still having flashbacks to last week’s 14 degree Phonics beatdown.  We did:

COP:  SSH, Imperial Walkers, Don Qs, Merkins, Flutterkicks, Hillbillies.

Head to Bodos parking lot:  5,10, 15, 20 of:  HRMs and V-Ups.  Then 2 sets of 30 Wilson’s Boxing Dying Cockroaches (time for a better and shorter name!)

Head to other lot for 4 corners of:  10 Burpees, 20 HRMs, 30 Jump Squats, 40 WWII Situps. Bear crawl between each corner.  Mosey to TES back field, partner up.  3 rounds of Run field & 5 Pullups.  Other man does Donkey Kicks.

Down to Triple check loop for Triple check:  B2W, Freddy Mercurys, and loop run.  Finish up at flag with 25 American Hammers.  Announcements:  Time to sign up for Growruck!

NMS – Great to have Gomer Pyle back from his mission trip and back in the Gloom!  Would have been nice to have 1 more Hoedown regular attend to get us to the magical 12 but we got after it anyway.  High 30s temps is just about perfect weather according to several PAX, don’t get too sweaty and still hands do not freeze.

Several PAX lamented the 30 WBDCRs after V-Ups, it is Super Bowl week so YHC wanted to get a head start fighting off the gluttony of the big game on Sunday.  On the Donkey Kicks the lights came on literally as soon as we started.  Way to get the week started men!

  • In Tuckahoe, its always 70 and sunny!

Eight men including 4 with bare knees posted at Tuckahoe Elementary School for an 18 degree beatdown on Martin Luther King Day.  This is what occurred.

    NMS

YHC enjoys his yearly trip to other nano regions on Martin Luther King today.  Because of the temperatures, the plan was to keep the heart rate up the entire time regardless of Fudd’s opinion of the exercise.

A few observations from this morning.

    • 50% of those that posted this morning were wearing shorts.  The Tuckahoe region was at 33%.  Those travelling from outside the Tuckahoe nano region were at 100%.
    • Although many of us were likely watching football last night, there was little to no discussion of this today.  This might be explained by the little mumblechatter today.
    • While we were all likely sleeping, a lunar eclipse occurred.  Not a mention of this today.
    • YHC always considers Hoedown as the darkest AO.  This did not seem to be the case today possibly because the moon.
    • The blacktop at Hoedown is awesome.  The size reminds me of the one at Mary.

Dr. Martin Luther King would have turned 90 on January 15.  I’m always amazed at what Dr. King accomplished in only 39 years and inspired by his courage.  Recently, I heard the song “100 years” from Five for Fighting and realized I had passed the “45 for a moment” verse.  I believe I was around the “33 for a moment” verse when the song was released.  Both Dr. King and this song makes me reflect on my life and the many things that are to come in the future.

YHC really enjoyed the trip today.  It’s great seeing the guys from Tuckahoe.  You all did a great job!  Thank you as well to Gumbo for making the trip.

  • The Art of Naming FNGs

We have 18 strong PAX including yours truly; that includes 3 FNGs which is awesome.  We went to work on a somewhat mild winter morning.

    Workout went something like this:

Warm up:  16 Side straddle hops (in honor of the Bears score, poor Cody Parkey), 15 forward arm circles, 15 backward arm circles, 20 LBCs and 25 Freddie Mercuries

First Exercise:  Mosey to the Rite Aid after figuring out how to best navigate the Ridge Road crossing.  Do 4 corners – start with 10 burpees, then next corner 10 burpees and 20 WWIIs, then 10 burpees, 20 WWIIs, 30 jump squats, and lastly 10 burpees, 20 WWIIs, 30 jump squats, and 40 2 count flutter kicks.

Second exercise, reverse back the 4 corners with 40 2 count flutter kicks, 30 jump squats, 20 WWIIs and 10 burpees.  I sensed the FNGs were thinking “Wow these dudes are serious”.  After some planking activity we proceeded back to the front of Tuckahoe.

Third Exercise:  Get a partner and split 100 Merkins on the bike rack, 200 step jumps and 300 2 count flutter kicks, one partner exercises while the other runs to the start of the teacher’s lot.

Last exercise:  Handshake led the group with a merkin ring of fire.

Announcement:  Olivander is handling Puppy Pile which is scheduled for 1/26.  Closed in prayer.

Musings:  The Fireman was amazed at having 18 PAX and this was his first time picking names for FNGs and this morning we had 3 of them.  The first names went without too much trouble (Welcome Bernanke and Scrum) but on the 3rd name we got stuck on Dell and then Viral starting talking about a “dude” in the old Dell Commercial.  So I thought why not go with Dell dude which in hindsight sounds pretty lame.  The Dell “dude”‘s name is Steven by the way.  So there were lots of mumble chatter and laughter at the Fireman’s expense about how bad a name that was.  Well smarter minds prevailed and the 3rd FNG is Escobar.  Welcome Escobar!
