  • Eph 4:29 Hoedown

Nine-man PAX in the frigid gloom.

Theme was the power of words, for good or ill, and the exhortation from Ephesian 4:29 to get rid of foul talk and replace it with speech that builds others up.

Exercised in snow and on pavement.

    No prayer requests or announcements.

Highlight: Crunchy Frog’s penguin slide down the icy slope

  • Is anyone going to Hoedown?

Fortunately, the answer was ‘yes’. Given the rain, and with the snow on the ground, we opted for the covered walkway and stayed dry. We did a ‘Hot Tater’ and dreamed of 67-degree weather in Florida.

Actually, I’m hoping for a decent snow. Since I moved here 3 and half years ago, we haven’t had much snow. I’m hoping the rain doesn’t wash it all away.

Upchuck started us off with: (this is roughly right)

    • 35 SSHs in cadence
    • 10 Monkey Humpers in cadence
    • 15 Imperial Walkers in cadence
    • Stretch (touch the ground)
    • Cobra
    • 10 Reverse crunch in cadence
    • 10 WWIs in cadence
    • 3X: Bear crawl to the break in the railings, 3 merkins and mosey back

    1-800 took over:

Triple check: This was harder than it sounds. We had to pick 2 other partners. Very challenging. The other challenge was remembering to rotate thru the 3 exercises. It takes a Harvard education to do this correctly.

    • Partner 1: Bernies up the walkway to the door and moseys back (touch door lightly so as not to set off the alarm)
    • Partner 2: Merkins
    • Partner 3: Squats

11s up the covered walkway to the doors

    • Jump squats
    • WWIIs

    Pigskin finished:

To the wall under the covered area by the gym

    • 15 People’s chair air press in cadence
    • 10 BTTW Hand touch in cadence
    • 10 Mike Tyson OYO
    • 10 BTTW Australian Mountain Climbers in cadence
    • 15 Donkey Kicks OYO
    • 10 BTTW Toe Taps in cadence
    • 10 Mike Tyson OYO

    To the Railings

    • 10 single count Bulgarian split squats: right leg back
    • 10 single count Bulgarian split squats: left leg back
    • 10 single count Derkins
    • Repeat above except 9 single count
    • Then 8 and so on down to 1

    Finished with some Mary

    • 15 Crunch Frogs in cadence
    • 15 Heels to heaven in cadence
    • Plank, right arm and/or leg high
    • Plank, left arm and/or leg high
    • Elbow plank to count of 45
    • 6-inch leg lift to count of 60

    Announcements:

The Bridge on Saturday, January 25. See Fudd (not Fud, Fudd). This is a ‘halfway house’ (my choice of words) to ease inmates back into the outside world. As the saying goes “every saint has a past and every sinner has a future”. We all have regrets, it’s a part of life. Dedicate yourself to forgiving the ‘f-ups’ of others as well as your own ‘f-ups’. I think it helps when we think of these things as ‘opportunities to learn from experience and get better’.

Tomorrow at Heartbreak Ridge, the Q sign-up sheet has Honeydo with a “?” mark. Will we be pencil rolling up the Ridge? Scorpion Kicks in the snow? If you want to find out, show up!

    1-800, Upchuck, Pigskin

  • Easy as One, Two, Three

14 gathered for an end of the year Hoe Down Monday morning beat down.

Mosey to Bodos’s office complex parking lot for a standard Introduction, Disclaimer and Warm Up. SSH, DH, DQ, EW, US, MERK, LBC

Mosey to Rustique Salon & Spa for a Triple Check. MERK, LBC & Timer runs around Walgreens.

Mosey across the street to Cocoanut Jewelry. Looking down said shopping plaza for potential Yoga girls to gawk-at, at Zinger Fit YHC noticed 54 structural walk way poles he could potentially put to good use. Something Simple, Something Easy. Easy as One, Two, Three. So YHC quickly formed, in the back of his reptilian brain, an articulate plan of action. ONE Burpee, TWO WW2, THREE Merkins at each of the 54 structural support poles. Sounds easy enough….

YHC had to call an “audible” at pole 42 just shy of Bistro804. Something about only having 5 minutes to make it back to the flag.

Mosey back to the Flag.. With 1.25 minutes to spare. “I figured we had time for a few more poles.” Names & Numbers. A few discussions concerning New Years Resolutions. 1. Read more books. 2. Use less profanity. 3. Join Oyster at Breaking Bread.

    No Prayer requests.

Announcement- JAN 1 Dog Pile Convergence. See Slack. Gypsy Q.

Thank You Bodo’s for praying for us.

Thank You Pax for letting me Q!

  • F3 Cribs S1E1

A cool dozen emerged from the warm enclosure of their idling cars. The clock strikes 530 and off we went with a short mosey to the small teacher’s lot. The circle was small to preserve warmth, and got even smaller with the Ukrainian Soldiers bringing us in nice and snug.

A jog down the road and up west drive got the blood flowing as we transitioned into teams of three for triple check. Run the loop, monkey humpers, and box cutters. Though the little dog noticed us with barks, no angry neighbors shouted out the time of day.

Over to YHC’s house for two sets of 20 PLTs. Mosey down to the shopping center and form a circle for a ring of fire with Mary. Dealer’s choice as we worked the abs.

Mosey back to the AO with some 11s – Bulgarian squats and derkins. Now let’s finish with BTTW – last man standing. It came down to Bodos and Pigskin and Pigskin prevailed.

    YHC took us out.

Announcements – Welcome Salt Lick to F3 Richmond. He joins us from the middle of Texas.

Excellent 2nd F coffee and a tour of Bodo’s pad. A spectacular space and an office that is exactly what you would imagine Coffee and discussion rivals none. Who will take us on next month’s tour?

  • Fellowship through Fitness

0500 when the alarm went off YHC would head the sound of steady rain outside there was a strong pull to stay in the Fartsack. The idea a wet and cold muffin top was not high on the list, but after YHC Fartsacked last week after writing “Hawt Potato” on the Q sheet YHC knew it couldn’t be done twice in a row.

YHC pulled into the parking lot at 5:28 and saw one lone vehicle, Vandalay. YHC was happy to not be alone, it almost 7 years YHC has avoided being a solo poster and today wasn’t going to be the day.

We opted to keep things dry. We moseyed from Hoedown down to First Watch and did various exercises. YHC has never had a one-on-one conversation with Vandalay and it was a great opportunity to get to know him.

    Announcements – none

Prayer Requests – Fudd’s sister (Mary), Roger Rogers M, YHC’s M’s Cousins daughter, Charlotte.

NMS – Great morning, YHC is glad he posted.

  • 4 Corners on Repeat

Four regulars showed up for this week’s edition of Hoedown. No one had signed up for the queue but someone had put down “hawt potato” which the PAX seemed to think meant Handshake would be joining. At 0530 with no sign of Handshake, the PAX set off for what would be a hot potato.

We moseyed to the Third Church parking lot across from the school where 1-800 lead warm up that included SSHs, DQs, Dead Man Hang, Arm Circles, Merkins, LBCs.

We then moseyed behind the church over to the lot between the church and office buildings. 1-800 called a Four Corners: 10 jump squats, 20 carolina dry docks, 30 monkey humpers, 40 2-count american hammers. Oyster then called a reverso.

EF Hutton took the queue and we moseyed back to the school and around the back to the upper field. We had a quick interlude of three rounds of a PAX member doing pulling ups while the rest held plank. Being popular today and the PAX wanting to keep together, another Four Corners. 10 HR Merkins, 20 Imperial Squats, 30 WWIIs, 40 SSHs. Then, reverso, but freddie mercuries instead of WWIIs.

Marv took over and led us down to the black top for another Four Corners. 5 burpees, 20 LBCs, 30 APBs, 40 SSHs. Reverso, but bear crawl the shorts, swap LBCs for American Hammers and APBs for Hello Dollies..

Mosey down the drop off circle with a stop for 10 jerkins. 20 donkey kicks on the wall, then back up for 10 more jerkins and return for a final 20 donkey kicks.

Mosey back to the flag for a quick round of mary.

    Marv took us out.

  • Cold Weather Gloves season

Eight strong started their December off in the Gloom and were met with temps in the 20s.

COP of basics. Mosey down Hepler with some stops along with way for Merkins, WWIIs. Get to end of Hepler. Partner up for Dora123: 100 Merkins, 200 Jump Squats, 300 LBCs. Mosey across Forest over Spottswood. Stop for more Merkins, Heels 2 Heaven. End up in 3rd Parking lot. Bear Crawl halfway, run to end then Merkins. Repeato x2 but Crab Walk & lunge.

Back to parking loop. Double check of run loop & Ball2Wall, Peoples chair. Finish with 3 min of Mary. YHC took us out.

NMS: Was great to see Senior Frog waiting when YHC pulled in. Sounds like he had a long eventful trip to the South Pole, congrats SF! Oyster was pestering Bodos to setup a meeting with the Mayor Elect to petition for some heated-outdoor Pickleball courts in the City. Good to have Vandalay out at Hoedown.

  • Crisp, Clear Morning in Tuckahoe

6 RVA Pax and 1 downrange from Valdosta, GA gathered in the gloom for this week’s edition of Hoedown. With no one on the Q sheet, YHC said he had a plan so off we went.

Mosey to the closest Third Church parking lot for warm up that included Dead Man Hang, Don Quixote, Arm Circles, Merkins, Freddie Mercuries.

Mosey to the far Third Church parking lot for a Triple Check. P1 runs around the lot. P2 does squats. P3 does WWIIs.

    Next, Four Corners. Corner 1 – 10 Merkins. Corner 2 – 20 jump squats. Corner 3 – 30 monkey humpers. Corner 4 – 40 side straddle hops.

Mosey back to Silverspring for parked car bingo. 2 burpees for pick up trucks.  5 merkins for each SUV.  5 squats for a car/crossover/wagon.  After completing the loop down Silverspring and connecting back to Forest, the PAX agreed that the neighborhood has entirely too many SUVs.  YHC believes the merkin count hit 80 merkins by the end of the loop.

Mosey back across Forest to Tuckahoe for 11s.  The pax picked Carolina dry docks and American hammers.

With a few minutes left, mosey to the flag for some mary.  Exercises included APBs, Heels to heaven, WWIs, leg lifts, spelling HOEDOWN with your legs.

  • We Were All “Who’s This Guy?” Once

As I was sitting in my car at 5:27am in the otherwise empty Tuckahoe Elementary Parking lot I began to wonder what I was going to do if no one showed up to Hoedown on this November Monday. Do I do a workout by myself out of spite (kinda like Conspiracy did that one time he was late and TYA immediately bolted up Kingscrest at Munford)? Do I go home and go back to the sack? Maybe I just go for a run, although I’m not wearing my running shoes? What’s the protocol here?

Fortunately, three other west enders showed up, including Vandelay, who apparently was talked into coming by some guys at Libbie Market over the weekend. Good work by those guys getting Vandelay back in the saddle…and also well done talking someone into going and not showing up yourself. It has been a bit light at Hoedown lately.

The Q itself wasn’t all that noteworthy.

Basic COT to begin with…some dead man hangs, a runner’s stretch, arm circles, 25 2 count side straddle hops.

Down to Lindsay, partner up. Pretty simplistic run to the top and back while the partner is lunging, bear crawling and crab walking.

Same deal on Paris next to Lindsay.

Same-ish deal on the soccer field at Tuckahoe…except it was dips and pullups while YHC unsuccessfully tried to kick a soccer ball into the goal.

Some donkey kicks and American Hammers to finish.

In between we knocked out fifty two-count Mercans. Here Here.

Quick Pigskin appreciation post– When Pigskin first came out to Hoedown, it was definitely a “Who’s This Guy?” situation. His in cadence included numbering in all different kinds of languages, including, but not limited to, Spanish, German and could that be Russian? It was a lot for the guys at Hoedown to take…we’re not into change and, by and large, it isn’t a group that calls a ton of attention to themselves. To jump out and start speaking Russian on your first day requires some intestinal fortitude…but there he was, all 70 years-ish old making us all look like out of shape schlubs as he sprite-ed around TES hammering away burpees like he was doing 12oz curls.

I’m inspired each and every day I work out with Pigskin. I’m come to enjoy the multi-lingual cadence counting, it’s pretty charming when you think about it…Shaka Smart would always say “Variety is the spice of life!” Russian language is spice, for sure. You tell me that age 72 I’m running around a snobby west end elementary school in the dark before the sun rises and I’ll absolutely take it right now, no questions asked.

This Thursday I’m heading to Charleston on a business deal and I plan to workout with those guys somewhere down there. I guess, on that morning, I’ll be “that guy” of the “who is this guy” fame. Maybe I’ll brush up on some of my non-existent Russian.

  • Three dudes and the frozen food truck

Light crowd at Hoedown this morning where three dudes gathered to kick off the week.

After a fantastic COP, a burpee 5 min drill, several Dora’s, a together triple check and 150 too many Supermans we wrapped up with some announcements and YHC took us out.

Sorry to those who missed the fun. There was a Bodosmobile sighting in the church lot but no Bodos today. The frozen food truck was all up in our business during warm up, must have been a new driver. The rest of the morning’s details are classified.
