  • The Pax Like Big Butte

    ….and they cannot lie.

Take the bat cave and across the bridge to head upstream. 4s turn at Butte and return. 5s take a left on Waumsetta, a left on Old Spring, and a left on Butte to return. 6s continue to Hickory, a left on Cherokee, a left on Waumsetta, a right on Old Spring, and a left on Butte to return.

  • True North

Twelve stallions of the new year started their running resolutions on the right foot. After Fudd recalibrated his internal compass based on the local beer shop as a reference point, off we went.

Along the lake, across the parking lot and up Boatwright. Take Edgehill to Three Chopt and continue North. A left on Horsepen and a right on Normandy put us in new territory to be boldly explored.

Upon Normandy’s intersection with Patterson, cross and veer right onto Sweetbriar. 4s take a left on Woodberry to Horsepen and through the fraternity gate to return to the lake.

5s and 6s continue down Sweetbriar to Rock Creek, a left on Baldwin and a right on Westham Pkwy. 5s turn on Lakewood and 6s on club Vista both leveraging College to return to the baseball field entrance. A quick route around the lake and the course was covered.

  • Just the Tip

Five post xmas spider run stallwarts stared at each other for a bit before instructions were shared and off we went. One did his own thing whereas the others did the prescribed 5 mile route.

    The Route

    • By the lake, over the pavilion, right through the path
    • University to Ralston to River
    • River to Glenbrooke
    • Up Summit
    • Right on Glenbrooke to finish the loop
    • Back the way we came

Not a lot of takers for runners this AM. YHC thought there may be a few more that wanted to burn off some xmas calories. Extra dose of hills this AM. Job well done to those who posted.

Five milers had christmas storytime of yesteryear. Storytime was going great until YHCs story of shutting the door on a new puppy’s tail when YHC was 10 or 11. Luckily for the dog, just the tip was caught, requiring a half dozen stitches. Apparently Saab didn’t appreciate the story as his dinner almost resurfaced.

Great to catch up with Boberry and to hear of the number of hams he basted and baked this year. Livin’ high on the hog!

    Have a great day gentlemen.

    Splinter out.

  • Light the Menorah

10 regulars arrived in various modes of transportation for a painful but spirited Spider Run. YHC posted the routes on slack, essentially 4s and 5s run up four different hills to Three Chopt and the 6s take one next 4 other hills, add a thumb with the bat cave and you’ve got yourself a Menorah run. Agreed, this makes no sense at all. But we ran a bunch of difficult hills and it was good. Fight me.

Prayers to our brother Pucker and the Gorman family as they celebrates the life of his mother.

Merry Christmas! There I said it!

Seriously though T-claps to the 6s for tackling those hills, praise Jesus.

  • Kotters Don’t Like Owls Either

Sixteen spiderlings gathered on campus, wondering if there was still time to sign up for F3 secret Santa. The route was tried and true… Spider Run’s version of Grooooooooove.

    The Route

    • Through the bat cave, across the bridge, and head upriver
    • 4s turn around at Rivercrest (a little heavy)
    • 5s turn around at Cherokee (a little heavy)
    • 6s go up Rustic, left on Oakleaf, left on Elm, left on Hickory, back down to the river

Numbers, names, announcements, YHC took us out.

Apparently every time Shakedown comes back from an extended Spider Run break, he walks into intervals. Sorry to disappoint today! As Pucker said it, it’s about as flat as you can get at Spider Run.

Welcome back to Moon Pie after a one year hiatus. Turns out he came back out because he found running by himself near St. Chris to be too scary for him. An owl dive bombed him a few weeks back and he just knew he needed to find a group to run with. Never fear Moon Pie, the owls clearly are scared of us!

Everyone loves running across the river. The traffic was loud and plentiful today, otherwise it was an enjoyable run. Thanks to all you guys for showing up every week, even if it’s becoming arctic-like.

    Announcements

    • Last day to sign up for F3 secret santa is today
    • 12 days of xmas at No Toll next Tuesday. Let’s try to do something special at Spider Run next Tuesday to honor the tradition. Sign up!
    • Watch out for those potholes on Hickory!

  • Mind the Sack

15 runners and two canines launched promptly, on time, and without any questions except one existential query.

Up the hill to campus and take a left to the main entrance and a right up Boatwright knocking out many of the hills up front. Take the sassafras cut through and pick up Three Chopt taking a left on Patterson.

Begin the tour de Westham meandering through the rolling hills. 4s turn left on University to return around the lake. 5s pick up Ridge to Country Squire and back to University to return around the lake. 6s pick up Westham Station (plus Overlook) and return via bat cave.

Prayers to Fudd’s friend and Pucker.

    Hitchhiker took us out.

  • You Breathe Too Much

Fourteen Beaver Moon gazers gathered to share Thanksgiving driving stories as a means to delay launch this AM. Launch was not delayed. Instructions were shared and off we went for:

    Announcements

    • Great year for Breaking Bread. Thanks to Oyster for coordinating and all the people who volunteered. 2024 slots are open.
    • HDHH on 12/6 @ the wonderfully smelling Final Gravity @ 6PM. Lockjaw will be there.

    Moleskin

Mumblechatter was at a minimum until everyone warmed up this AM. As the 5s emerged from the cave, stories started about the power of breathing. Bodos may not be our resident pulmonary specialist; however, he has studied a lot about breathing. Singular takeaway from this AM, don’t breathe too much.

Many a comment about the November Full Moon, a.k.a. The Full Beaver Moon. No beaver sightings this morning but we were all looking!

For all y’all holiday travelers. Make sure you double strap your roof torpedo before heading out on the road!

    See ya!

  • Pre-Turkey Trot

Twenty tryptophan trekking titans turned loose at various times to attempt to all finish a 10k by 0615. The route was well rehearsed and published in advance. Most everyone got it. One group left at 0510. After Saab recognized the stranger standing beside him, Hutton called 0515 and a large group took off. Four more of the fast gobblers took off at 0525.

    The Route

    https://onthegomap.com/s/fmrolial

    My watch had exactly 6.2.

    Moleskin

Great to see a wide variety of the region’s best join us at Spider Run today. Always good to catch up with the broader PAX. Best to all with their Thanksgiving Day festivities and celebrations.

    Announcements

    • Faceplant has the Q at Dogpile on Saturday. Turns out it is his Dogpile VQ he’s been planning for 6 years. Seems suspicious but he did offer to buy breakfast for anyone that brings an FNG. So bring an FNG, get a free breakfast. No questions asked. Saab already claimed the person at the corner of Parham & Patterson.
    • Know a great man that needs some assistance? See Fudd’s post on Slack.
    • 6am @ Mary Munford this Thursday for an authentic Virginia lesson on thanks and giving.
    • HDHH 12/6 @ 6PM @ Final Gravity. Humidity is guaranteed to be high.

    Have a great week everyone

  • No Lockjaw, No Splinter, No Problem

For the first time since the dog days of summer someone other than Lockjaw or Splinter showed up at Spider Run with a route to run. YHC joined twelve guys at the lowest point in the Tuckahoe Area (not an official measurement) to run around the hills of Westham on a beautifully cool and crisp morning.

    The Thang–

Everyone to College Road via the baseball field parking lot. Right on Lakewood and left on Wood. This should all be very familiar. From there, Aha!, it takes a bit of a change…instead of the normal right on Baldwin, everyone went left…and we took that to Woodberry. Left on Woodberry.

The 4s-Take a left on Sweet Briar…to Stuart Hall. Left on Stuart Hall and a left on Baldwin. Baldwin to Westham, to Baldwin…right on Wood, left on Lakewood…then back to the flag.

The 5s…They went Woodberry to Hollins. Left on Hollins then right on Baldwin to the top up to Patterson. Back down Baldwin to Westham. Westham to University to College to the parking lot…back to the flag.

The 6s…They went left on Baldwin after Hollins…right on Rock Creek…left on Forest and then right on Spottswood. There’s a loop on Spottswood to take that more or less dumps you back out on Forest. Left on Forest, right on Rock Creek…right on Baldwin. Then pick up the 5s trail on the way back to the flag.

Full disclosure…I think YHC days of running 6 in 45 minutes are pretty much over. The crew had a brisk pace this morning and I wasn’t really close to running 7:30s. Anyway, I think 6 mile routes are worth brining up…but know there may be an extra minute or two at the end that you wait for YHC to come trundling in.

  • Back Third of the Spider

    • 6s right on Westham, left on Woodberry, left on Sweet Briar, left on Baldwin, right on Westham
