  • The Night We Saw Them All

A PAX eclipsing 40 ditched all common sense for about 18 hours to receive a plentiful helping of each of the three Fs.  This was the F3RVA Century Classic.

YHC has conversed with a number of individual PAX members about their experience, taking notes during the event and thinking about how to transcribe all of these memories into a backblast.  There is no way YHC could do the stories justice by attempting to capture them for the collective PAX.  Then, after chatting with Lockjaw and the (sober) Ronnie, it became clear.  Treat the backblast as a living backblast.  YHC will make no attempt to capture the essence of this workout, only setting the stage for each and every PAX member to capture it for himself.

My memories are collected below.  I encourage everyone to add to this list by commenting with your favorite memory.

Leg 1:  Trying to contain my energy for the CSAUP while stuck in traffic for opening night of the squirrels game
Leg 2:  Praying for Saab on Meadowbridge and Atlee Rd.  Kudos to all that ran that leg, a true game of frogger
Leg 3:  All the Mechanicsville PAX member who were not running, companion running with the actual runners.  Kudos!
Leg 4:  The Creek parking lot is great for fellowship.  This truly felt like a tailgate parking lot.  The energy, games and conversation were all electric.
Leg 5:  The headlamp on my run reflecting all the pollen flying through the air with me initially thinking it was raining.  30 minutes later realizing all that pollen was being sucked into my lungs at an incredible rate.
Leg 6:  Hearing of TYA and Swirly questioning if YHC actually marked his legs of the course and me telling them where they can shove it.
Leg 7:  Realizing how peaceful and quiet the city can be when when you are in it and surrounded by trees.  The new moon highlighted the stars and all their brilliance.
Leg 8:  Showing up to Hoedown and having Ronnie greet us after his enjoyable evening.
Leg 9:  Marv almost taking out another animal with his running shoes.
Leg 10:  Thinking about how comfortable it is to try to sleep on the top of a picnic table.
Leg 11:  Watching the back and forth between Saab complaining about not being able to sleep and Upchuck for waking him up.
Leg 12:  Waving to the UR security guard while sitting in a white van with 4 men laying on the ground.  He waved and continued by.
Leg 13:  Marv learning that Fudd was going to show up only for leg 18 and would still get a tshirt.
Leg 14:  Seeing Lockjaw drive 20 in a 45 on Charter Colony so he could stay between the lines.
Leg 15:  Reminding Marv that Fudd was still sleeping.
Leg 16:  Hearing of a certain individual’s multiple escapades to the bathroom at a singular Wawa.
Leg 17:  Making the van take a 3 mile detour to Wawa so YHC could get a breakfast hoagie, thus missing the final hand-off.
Leg 18:  Pulling into Dogpile, realizing it was almost over and thinking the whole experience was too fast.

This humble correspondent would like to thank everyone involved with making this event successful, especially those listed in the QIC list.  Without it, this would have been a completely stupid and utterly failure of an event.

    Splinter out.

  • Masonry 101 at WDOG

16 aspiring Brick Masons took on WDOG this morning to perfect their skills at the art of Masonry.  As soon as conditions became 70 and sunny at 5:30am, YHC’s tailgate was dropped and coupons were acquired.  Let’s Mosey!

Mosey around to the far end of the Carillon field for:

COP w/ coupons!  All in cadence

    Arm Circles  x 5 big/5 small forward/backward

    Helicopters x 10

    DQ’s x 10

    Russian Soldiers x 10

    Copperhead Squats x 10

    Hand Release Merkins (HRM’s) x 10

Place coupons down on ground to give them a rest.

    Mosey to Amphitheater for:

    Escalating Incline Merkins

1 on first step, 2 on second step, increase by one all the way to 18 on top step.

    De-escalating Dips

18 on top step, 17 on next step, decrease by one all the way to the bottom.

Mosey back to Carillon field and reacquire your pair of coupons for:

The BEAST with coupons in hands

Mosey back to Shovel Flag for:

COT, Numberama, Namearama and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

CSAUP is upon us.  Think about tapering, sleep schedule, etc, etc.

Slurpee has Breaking Bread next Sunday, April 22nd.  YHC is helping, but we need at least one more, please.

2.0 friendly Roller Coaster this evening at the top of Hillcrest at 5:30pm.

Please keep Lab Rat’s father in your prayers!!

    NMS:

Since CSAUP is upon us, YHC thought it would be a good idea to change things up a little and rest the lower body and concentrate on the upper body.  To make things more interesting and somewhat fun, YHC decided to incorporate coupons into most of the workout.  YHC had planned some Rusty Cage fun, but time ran out.  Maybe next time!

There was much mumblechatter from Lab Rat and from a (sans gloves) TYA.  During the Beast, YHC overhead a couple PAX trying to decide whether a certain number was still considered a prime number.  Not sure what that was all about.  Whoever was running the Beast right by the cones was absolutely “killing it”!  Correct YHC if YHC is wrong, but YHC thinks it was Circle K.  YHC was trying to keep up with him to no avail!

YHC also heard some discussion about Hardywood’s new group of Groupies at No Toll.  YHC did not get a chance to get the details, but  YHC is sure that it was a funny story!

YHC could hear one or two of the PAX hitting their coupons together throughout the morning trying to play a tune.

YHC would like to let TYA know that the bricks are available for his next project or for repairs to MARV’s house.

Way to work this morning gentlemen!  That was impressive!

YHC will see some of you this evening and the rest of you at CSAUP!

    “Time to taper” -Lockjaw

    Have a great Wednesday all!!

  • Rubbin’ is Racin’

12 stalwarts saddled up for today’s edition of W-Dog.  The horse-mounted police in Byrd Park tell the story this way.

    COP:
Mosey to the first traffic circle.  Russian soldiers, SSHs, DQs, Johnsonville Hillbillies (flair required), LBCs, flutter kicks, and t-release mercans.  Quick stretch of the belly…mosey to the Great Lawn.

    Elevens:
    Snow angels and squats

Short mosey to the Pull Off at the end of the Great Lawn

Curb Crawls…1 mercan at the first curb…up to 5 mercans

Mosey to the Triangular or Quadrangular Shaped Roads (recently the site of The Cooper) for Wild Pony Races:
First rider jumps on back of partner, who runs the clockwise through the warm up circle loop and back to the end of the access road.  (This is easier to understand in person than on paper).  Partners switch at their leisure.   Each does 5 boo-yah mercans at each switch.  Repeato 3 times, changing directions every now and again.

Mosey to the side of the Bell Tower for Touch-a-Tree
    10-8-6-4-2…partner one touches trees while partner two exercises…first two rounds…LBCs…3rd and 4th rounds…flutter kicks…5th round…burpees.

Mosey back to the flag.  Number-am-a, Name-a-ram-a, Vinny took us out.

    Announcements:
YHC’s friend and neighbor 2-Can has crushed his personal goals for fitness and dietary improvement.  This is a BIG personal accomplishment – nothing easy about this.  Every one of the PAX should pat our brother on the back when you next see him.  Well done, my friend!

Last week of The Healing Place…YHC would like to see a few new guys out there on Saturday.  What’s easier after a Hardywood Q at Dogpile than running a few miles to support some guys working to address their personal demons?  YHC is looking for a few good men to make it out one more week…if you have not been, plan for it, run it, and join us at ET’s afterward.

CSAUP…if you are not running, please volunteer to staff a Party Stop along the route, drive a van, etc.  You don’t want to be “that guy” who misses this event and does not understand the inside jokes for the next several months…no, you do not want to be that guy.  Come join the PAX, even for a short while.  If you can’t make it, Mr. Holland is hosting an event at 6:00 a.m. Saturday, April 14, for those with a guilty conscience…it’s called Dogpile.  Come out and help him through his first Dogpile Q!!

    NMS
YHC arrived early to find Old Reliable / Big Blue in place.  This gave YHC a chance to catch up with Swirly on baseball, hockey, and other matters.  YHC and Swirly also discussed the re-emergence of Seal Team at Spider Run.  A new boot camp has started for them.  On the one hand, YHC continues to marvel at the financial success that comes from indoctrinating new fitness enthusiasts.  On the other hand, YHC continues to marvel at the financial success that comes from indoctrinating new fitness enthusiasts.  There is a dark part of YHC’s personality that wants to post large “Why are you paying for something that we do for free?” signs at each Seal Team workout.  Perhaps that is why YHC has not been invited to Seal Team.  C’est la vie…before we knew it, the parking lot starting filling and it was time for a free workout.

Always good to start the Q with a special request…Ronnie has been easing back into F3, and he asked that the Q go easy on him.  Ever eager to please, YHC offered to let Swirly Q in order to accommodate this request.  Ronnie opted to keep YHC as the Q.

Nice work on the Wild Pony Races this morning.  YHC can’t quite determine whether the PAX love this, hate this, or generally have a love-hate relationship with this.  Offshore was heard to say “rubbin’ is racing’” while carrying (Kubota????)…that’s the spirit.  And, glad to find YHC didn’t destroy Oyster’s back on this one.  Way to dig deep…210 pounds of Chatterbox on your back is no joke.

Nice to have Paddy Mayo visiting again…good to partner with you on the Touch-a-Tree, and YHC will welcome you back anytime…YHC has also contracted to publish a horticultural study of the park for any future guests from NC.  Dang, brother, where DID YOU RUN TO in order to find 8 and 6 trees?  Brother did some CSAUP training in there somewhere.  Nice work!

Lastly, great effort this morning, fellas. Always a pleasure to lead this group.

  • Double Nickel

12 brave souls emerged from the fartsack for a beautiful March morning.  Weather is turning to springtime finally and the temperature was a perfect 70 and sunny for the workout

    The Thang

Mosey towards the road to the lake.  COP.  55 SSH, 30 arm circles, 10 windmills.  Mosey across the street and towards the lake.  Partner up for the Double Nickel.  First partner runs to the light, does five burpees and returns, second partner doing exercises.  Exercises are 55 hand release merkins, 155 jump squats, 255 WWII setups, 355, SSH, 455 LBC.  Mosey a few feet and grab a curb for curb crawls.  Ascending and descending to 5, repeating 5.  Exercises are incline and decline hand release merkins.  Mosey back towards the shovel flag, stop at intersection for five hand release merkins.  Circle up for ring of fire, 5 hand release merkins a piece  Final exercise is american hammers x 55.  Mosey to the flag and TYA took us out.

    NMM

Birthday Q’s are always fun, that and I haven’t been to Wdog in a bit.  That made for a great return for me.  I really love the AO as there are so many things to do there and the variety makes the workouts interesting.  Theme of the day centered around the age.  Usually I don’t really give a hoot about how old I am, but for some reason, the double nickel has been really bothering me.  Being the numbers guy, I keep doing the stupid math.  for example, I am as close to Wheelbarrows age as I am to 82, I am as close to Splinters age as I am to 71.  Shit, that f$5k’ing old.  But, not a lot you can do about it.  I’ll keep the same philosophy I’ve been using for years.  Do as much as you can do now, hit it hard, and try to be in at least as good a shape next year as you are today.

On the double nickel, we broke up into pairs.  As everyone was pairing up, I ended up being the odd man out.  No problem, I teamed up with Swirly and Sippy (not a bad pair of dudes to have on your team) and jumped into the exercises.  It all made sense to me until the COP when we counted off and had an even number of guys (12).  How the heck was there an odd man out when there were 12 guys there.  Circle K thought he was the odd man out as well and joined one of the other teams.  Note to self.  When Q’ing if you can count the guys out there, you might avoid having two odd men out.

The double nickel was a long exercise and took us about a half hour to complete.  it was not, however, the exercise that got the most complaints.  The incline hand release merkins were tough.  There were two challenges.  First, you definitely had to look out for the dental work.  Too quick a movement or the wrong positioning of the body and you were in trouble.  Second, pushing up your whole upper body from an incline position is challenging. YHC had to rely on a kipping motion to be able to get his body off the ground after the first several rounds.

TSB (my daughter Leigh) and MLWK (my lovely wife Kay) surprised us with breakfast and OJ at the end of the workout.  I couldn’t have been happier to see them out there today.  It is the little things in life that make you feel special.  My daughter thinking of doing that for me and them both willing to get up at 530 to pull it off is something Ill remember for a long time.

Theme of the day is Urgency.  We always think that we can do something tomorrow or in a year.  Live life today.  Acknowledge the precious time you have in life and use it to the fullest.  What a blessing that we have the capability and means to do just about anything we want.  Seize the day!

    TYA OUT

  • First Day of Spring

15 F3 studs greeted the first day of Spring by venturing into the 70 and sunny gloom.  Due to oxygen deprivation, I think this is what we did:

Mosey to Carillon field to circle up around the F3RVA Success Donut sponsored by Holland Family Chiropractic and presented this morning by Woodfin.  (Both Big Blue and Little Blue cars were with us this morning)

Exercises included : Invisible Jumprope, DQs, Arm Circles (front and back), merkins and LBCs.

Mosey to corner of field nearest Carillon facing the short side.  One Pax member flips tire 5 times while PAX performs various exercises.  PAX flips tire entire length of field.  Exercises included running forward and backwards, bear crawls and crawl bears, running to opposite corners of field, merkins and LBCs.

Mosey to amhphitheater for Self Destruction. First step = 1 merkin, 1 LBC, 1 squat.  Increase reps for each step all the way to top.  Mosey around circle for the six.

Mosey to Rusty Cage.  3 sets of 5 pullups and 5 jerkins.

Mosey back to the circle for Burpee Shuffle and WWII Ring of Fire.

Announcements – Too cold for announcements.

Numberama, Namearama, YHC took us out with a prayer.

Moleskin : YHC woke up at 0430 on the first full day of Spring, with thoughts of warm weather, birds chirping and heavy dew on the grass.  Just to prove who is really in charge, the Sky Q had rain, sleet and snow planned for the first full day of Spring.  YHC was making his morning coffee knowing full well there would be about 15 of his F3RVA brothers in search of a beatdown, no matter the weather conditions.  We even had a F3 visitor from Jacksonville, FL join in on the winter weather fun (Welcome PomPom, feel free to visit anytime).  YHC arrived with the F3RVA Success Donut Transport Vehicle in tow with 3 minutes to spare, to find a group standing in the drizzle, just as YHC had imagined.  During the mosey to the Carillon Field for the COP, Saab noticed the F3RVA Success Donut and sighed, followed by expletives.  And with that, Saab continued his menstration by not approving of any of the COP exercises YHC called out.  YHC is here to please.  When YHC was planning the beatdown, YHC anticipated flipping the tire the length of the field would take much more time.  However, the PAX crushed the field by flipping the F3RVA Success Donut like it was a Dunkin Donut.  No worries, YHC had some optional pleasantries up YHC’s sleeve.  Self Destruction ate up the perfect amount of time and proved to ensure the entire PAX was covered with ice crystals from head to toe. About this time furingthe beatdown, the sleet began falling heavy and the PAX could feel the ice pellets bouncing off their faces while performing the LBCs. (Additonally, D@#$ that grass on the steps was cold.)  The PAX completely destroyed themselves and there was still plenty of time for more beatdown fun.  Off to the Rusty Cage where the PAX, again made easy work out of pullups and jerkins.  Returning to the circle for made sure the PAX got a complete body workout.  I think we taxed every muscle group sufficiently this morning, as YHC is ready for a long winter nap.  (But it is the first day of Spring).

During the mosey back to the flag, Swirly mentioned that the PAX had just accomplished more than some people will accomplish all week.  YHC does not know why, but that thought has been stuck in YHCs head all morning.  With the help of the PAX, F3 men DO accomplish more than most people.  We get up early, get energized by a good beatdown and continue to accomplish tasks, goals, and challenges throughout the day at our jobs, with our 2.0s, and in our homes.  It all starts with F3 at 0530.  NO LONG WINTER NAPS TODAY, YHC HAS MUCH TO ACCOMPLISH ON THE FIRST FULL DAY OF SPRING.  YHC would like the thank the PAX for the inspiration.

Flipper – You are welcome for the new clients.

  • Get It All Out

15 super studs went from the bullpen to the mound to come save the day.  It was 70 and sunny from the start.  According to legend it went a little something like this.

Long mosey to the front of the Carillon for a COP certified to eliminate mumble chatter.

    IC:

    • 10 SSH regular, 10 SSH right leg up, 10 SSH left leg up
    • 10 Hand release merkins (HRM), 10 HRM right leg up, 10 HRM left leg up
    • 20 Mark Spitz
    • 20 WWII Situp

    Aaron Neville

Mosey to the rusty cage.  Complete 10 pull ups (any means necessary) then run to the fire hydrant to comeplete 1 burpee.  Repeat this until 1 pull up and 10 burpees. Mosey back to Rusty Cage

    Color Me Bad

All pax hang on the rusty cage.  The first man to let go begins hand release merkins in cadence.  As men let go they join in the cadence.  Bootleg and Shakedown were the champs with Vinny “don’t call me Testaverde” taking over the cadence and bringing in till 25 HRM were completed.

    Luther Vandross

For a modified dora/triple check.  One man planks, one man runs from the stage up the hill and back, the other man starts doing burpees.  Rotate as a team until 100 burpees complete.

Numberama, namerama, YHC lead us out.

Now that is how you get it all out!!  WAY TO BRING IT FELLAS!!!!  This was a monster effort and YHC threw everything but the kitchen sink at you.  Absolutely awesome!! TClaps to Handshake for his second post! Vinny has got to get some kind of award for being the fastest person to go from FNG to grizzled veteran!  Swirly was done so fast with his elevens that there’s a 50% chance he went back in time.  YHC was greatly pleased to seen the pax sharing their burpees during Color Me Bad.  In addition to a genetic defect, this makes YHC’s heart enlarged.

Go out there and be super fellas.  Normal is for chumps.

    Hardywood

  • Yelp……..Review This!

11 men posted to W Dog this morning with YHC looking to utilize the AO to its fullest. Good to see Sabotage in the gloom this am and Vinny posting after his virgin W Dog workout! 0530…time to mosey.

COP- Invisible Jump Rope x 15,  Don Quixote x 10, Copperhead Squat x 15, Freddie Mercury x 15,  LBC x 15. And to keep with tradition, YHC had several  counting moments when Swirly was not sure if the exercise was continuing or ready to halt. And YHC, threw out a few Sloth numbers for Hardywood.

Mosey to Byrd Lake for Merkins and Mountain Climbers at every light pole. x5 Merkins and x 10, 2 count Mnt Climbers at every light pole. Arms were on fire at the end!! Planks while PAX members finished.

Mosey to The Lawn….PLT. Each PAX members does 100 PLT at their own pace. Swirly and YHC each did 25 reps, 4 sets. Swirly, thank you for pushing the workout. Vinny….alone already but way to finish!

With a few minutes to spare, AYG Lawn Sprint toward Carillon. Time expired!!

Number-ama, Name-r-ama. Announcements—TYA is heading to Spartanburg, SC this weekend with Swirly, Saab, and Circle K as pit crew. TYA running 100 mile race, Saturday 0800. Kick ass TYA!! Breaking Bread was awesome, per Kubota. 8 residents attended but no yelp review!! YHC will have to work on that.  Hardywood to us out!

NMS- Great to see Sabotage out this am at the gloom. It has been awhile but hope all is well and look forward to seeing him in the gloom soon. Vinny-way to post after Dogpile and way to push. Keep posting and results will show!! Swirly-way to push YHC during PLT. Safe travels this weekend brother!!  EF Hutton–short sleeves were perfect this am. Has Hardywood ever worn long sleeves? And, if you have print Kodak pictures-sorta new and even better old, find them and look at them!! I promise they are still awesome!!

Thank you for following this am! F3 RVA is an awesome group of men who continually inspire me to be a better man!! Only those who post understand! God Bless.

    Loud and Proud,

    Flatline

  • Bear Crawl Doping

Eight fine gentlemen emerged in the waning gloom for a Splinter led beatdown @ WDog.  Huddle up around the flag while waiting for Hardywood to put his shoes on, then away we went.  It went something like this:

Long mosey to the east side of chigger hill for COP:

    20x Smurf Jacks
15x Russian Soldiers (or Hillbilly soldiers for one)
Typical routine for arm circles forwards and backwards
    20x Mountain Climbers
    10x WWI situps

    The Thang
Slow saunter over to fountain lake for 10+ minutes of merkins.  Gather at the southeast corner and run to the 1st light post and complete 2 merkins.  Run back to the start and repeat 2 merkins.  Run to the second light post and complete 4 merkins.  Run back to the start and repeat 4 merkins.  Continue as many light posts as you can get to in 10 minutes, doubling the merkins at each light post.  Stopped shortly after 10 minutes.

Work our way back to the VITA loop, stopping at the nearest corner.  Bear crawl counter clockwise on the loop to the first station then complete 10 jump squats.  Keep working our way around the track until YHC said stop.  Audible after the first 50 yd bear crawl (because that sucked) to alternate between lunges and bear crawls.  Quick audible to stop the mayhem after 4 stations.

Run, reportedly in the wrong direction, to the end of light post row (Boulevard & Trafford).  Escalating burpee light posts.  Start at 1, adding 1 burpee for every light post you get to.  Continue to the end of the sidewalk.

Run back to the flag, stopping for some pole smoker indian run with flutter kicks as the idle station.  Exchange pleasantries with our peer workout group before circling up for COT where YHC took us out.

    Moleskin
What a wonderful day to be out in the gloom.  With the light and temperatures increasing in the morning, the gloom doesn’t quite feel so gloomy.  The PAX was highly appreciative of the cardio friendly workout today.  Apparently the PAX did not appreciate YHC calling out 5 minutes left during 10 minutes of merkins.  Bodo’s wondered if that meant 5 minutes left in the workout.  Alas, much more to do.

Bear crawl stations on the VITA trail seemed like a good idea but was quickly modified due to overwhelming sucky-ness.  Even Honeydo was thankful for the audible there.  Apparently he has been working out with the Russians the past few weeks as his bear crawling form was top notch.

Swirly was itching to provide advice to our peer group on how both partners can benefit from certain exercises.  Glad he stayed on the straight path back to the flag.  Great catching up with you today Swirly.

    Announcements
    – CSAUP planning is in full effect.  Lobby your team captain for your ideal legs.
    – Breaking Bread this Sunday.  See Kubota.
    – Healing Place Saturday after Dogpile.  See Honeydo or Upchuck.
    – Prayers to all our PAX members going through grief or anxiety.

Apologies to any LIFOs that may have been out there.  No chance you would have found us today.  Enjoy the day fellas.

    Splinter out.

  • Two of US

Lockjaw’s 11 came forward for a rare Lockjaw Q of WDog.  Here is what transpired.

Mosey to the far large circle in front of the Carillon for COP.

    • Helicopters
    • Don Quixote

    • Find 4 trees, then 5 while partner does scorpions.  Switch between sets.

    • 20 plerkins x 2 for each partner

Line up behind Keymaster and indigenous people run back to the VSF.

    YHC took us out.

    NMS:

A Velentine’s Day special partner workout.  The title of the backblast refers to a Beatles deep cut song off of “Let It Be” that I randomly stumbled across on the radio this morning.  This is my favorite song from “Let It Be” and the song supports the partner theme while the album title supports moving on to new chapters in life, so it really fits.

My father-in-law passed away last night.  I really appreciate everyone who has reached out with care and support in recent weeks.  In times like these, one really takes account of what they have and these relationships are some of the best.  Thank You.

Go forward today and be the best version of yourself.  Be patient, thoughtful, and live for the day, leaving nothing for tomorrow.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw
