  • Old Glory’s Initial Flight at W-Dog

A lucky number 13 warriors of the gloom (some of whom knew what they were getting) broke free from the blissful comfort of the warm sack and posted at W-Dog for a Hump Day beatdown that was an old faithful that has just not graced W-Dog yet….it was an Old Glory.

After a brief introduction, YHC grabbed Old Glory, illuminated his headlamp and headed towards the road and down towards the bridge.  We hooked a right on Pump House Rd. and ran around the back of the AO and up the hill to the field in front of the Carillon – a little over 1 mile for those counting.

Plank for the six and Old Glory instructions were given — a timed exercise (20 minutes on the clock) and the goal was to complete as many “laps” as possible in that time.  Since our field is about 1/2 the size of the fields at NoToll, YHC decided to define a “lap” as follows (forgive the lawyer in me):

    • Perform 20 Merkins at the Carillon-end of the field (near the flag)
    • run the outside line of the field to the far end of the field and perform 20 jump-squats
    • run the outside line of the field back to the Carillon-end of the field and perform 10 Burpees
    • run the outside line of the field to the far end and perform 20 WWII sit ups

When time expired, gather back at the flag and plank for the six.

Unearth Old Glory and form up in a single-file line for a 1-mile (maybe a bit more) Native American run with the front man always carrying Old Glory.  Route was exiting the Carillon field away from the amphitheater to the alternate exercise circle, right to Rugby Road, Right on Rugby Road, Right on Park Drive and quick left on Blanton Avenue, Right on Trafford Road, Right on Spottswood Road (around the VITA Trail area), Right on Shirley Lane and straight across Park Drive back to the gathering spot.

Re-plant Old Glory and have 3 minutes of Mary with LBCs x20 IC, American Hammers x20 IC and Flutter Kicks x20 IC.

COT, Number-rama, name-a-rama and YHC took us out with a blessing for our continued health and the ability to keep getting out into the gloom, for the strength to carry us through our day and for the Sky-Q to watch over all our friend and family and those struck by yet another natural disaster with the earthquake in Mexico City.

    NMS:

For those on Twitter, you knew what was coming and you posted anyway…kudos.  For the rest of you, by the time you posted, your fate was sealed and it was too late.

Strong work by everyone, but Sippy destroyed the W-Dog version of the Old Glory.  Swirly and Tobit were both hot on his heels, but when Sippy lapped YHC he looked to be getting stronger by the lap.

YHC paused for a brief moment to check his watch and a Skinny-Bitch-Bleeder blur went flying past me.  Strong work Bleeder.

Super strong work by WOJO gutting out the Native American run at the end.  Way to push it brother.

When you are LIFO, it is nice to have a partner – Circle K and Ollivander managed to get their opening 1-mile in (albeit different from the PAX) and find the PAX a few minutes into the exercise portion and they jumped right in.  Nice job guys.

Personally, I think Old Glory travels well and worked great at W-Dog!  Nice job men.

    No more Gumbo for you!

  • Center the Sippy Cup and get ready for some ladders

21 brave men gathered in the misty fog for a little bit different WDog beatdown.  The workout went something like this:

Mosey to the far circle for:

COP: Helicopters, DQ, Imperial Walkers, Arm Circles, Merkins.

Sippy Cup Crawl.  Bear crawl to sippy cup in center of circle, 5 merkins, Crawl Bear back, 5 merkins  Repeat with crab walks and military crawls.

Mosey to the stage for ladder #1.  Squat jacks.  10, 20, 30, 40 seconds of squat jacks with a 15 sec rest between, then 50 seconds of Burpees, followed by 40,30,20,10 of squat jacks.

Mosey to the rusty cage for partner pullups 1-5 and then chinups 5-1.

Mosey to the stage for ladder #2.  Elbow plank (same 10,20,30,40, etc pattern as above).

Mosey to far circle for ladder #3. Merkins, same pattern as above.

Mosey back to flag for announcements and COP (YHC took everyone out).

    Announcements.

Talk to TYA about a movie  viewing (Parent Trap) this weekend that his daughter is planning as a fundraiser.  Last chance to sign up for ReeseStrong5K this weekend.  Convergence on Sept 30th.

    Moleskin.

The misty air made for an interesting, particularly dark and gloomy morning and made the haunted playground noises we’ve been hearing lately a bit more creepy.  Does anyone know what is making that noise?

Today’s workout was designed to be light on running for those post-BRR hurting legs. There was a lot of groaning today during the intervals.  Squat Jacks were tough, Elbow plank was deceptively hard, and the merkins were a real crowd pleaser this am.

Welcome to FNG Chernobyl a friend of Sabotage, who was named in contrarian fashion because he has environmentalist John Muir on his licence plate.

It was a pleasure to serve you men this am!

  • Mutiny aboard the SS Lab Rat

Eighteen strong battled off the fear of showers to post for what they thought was to be a Lab Rat Q.  Three from the Tuckahoe nano-region conspired and planted the Ghost Flag promptly at 5:27.  Splinter commandeered the Q and, after verifying Lab Rat was ready, promptly departed @ 5:30.  Mosey to the semi-lit area to the south of the Carillon for COP.

    COP
    SSH x20
    Don Quixote x10
Arm Circles 10x 5x, forward and backward
    Copperhead Squats x15
    Merkins x10
    Flutter Kicks x10

    The Thang
Quick mosey to the wooden stage for a variation of touch a tree.  Partner up with one partner repeatedly muscling up on the stage while the other partner touches a corner of the Carillon.  Second iteration was lunges and two corners.  Third iteration was jump squats and lap around the Carillon.  Plank up in between sets.  Pass to Lockjaw for segment 2 of mutiny.

Slip over to the rusty cage to pick up our favorite leaking coupons.  Everyone grab a sack and head back to the front of the stage for 4 corners with a sack.  20 of each of the following 4 exercises with your sack.  Sit ups, squats, military presses, tricep extensions.  Run between corners carefully toting sack to the next station.  Repeat a second time with 12 of each exercise.  Pass to Honeydo for mutiny v3.

Slug our sacks back over to the rusty cage and deposit them where they belong.  Partner up for 2 sets of 8 jerkins.  Al Gore while everyone finishes.

Run sackless to the front of the Carillon for a tribute to the BRR.  TYA correctly announced that there are 36 legs in the BRR.  Honeydo took the opportunity to complete 6 sets of 6 burpees, alternating between the top and bottom of the Carillon.

Jog to the near circle for some mary including APDs, heels to heaven and closing with american hammers.  Give it all you got back to the flag.

    Moleskin
Tuckahoe chatter over the past week has been centered around the appropriate and best usage of the previously acquired Ghost Flag.  Upon noticing sequentially planned Lab Rat Qs this week, the opportunity seemed too good to pass up.  Honedo, Lockjaw and Splinter conspired to take one off Lab Rat’s hands.  TClaps to Lab Rat for handing over the ship so peacefully.

There were a few questionable noises arising from the gloom during COP.  This time not from a PAX member but something in the ether.  YHC was comforted to find out that Swirly had a bead on the source of the noises and they were always under watchful eye.  Securing the AO doesn’t stop once the workout starts.

Everyone, YHC included, loves a good sack joke.  The best of the day must have been when Hutton was running back to the rusty cage with his ruptured sack.  His sack was leaking contents all over the gloom.  Be well brother.

Honeydo, as always, took it to another level with the 6×6 burpees.  Way to bring the pain at the end of the workout.

Lab Rat – enjoy the Ghost Flag.

Always a pleasure to lead, especially when unexpected.

    Moleskin:

YHC is not sure what was the  most amazing thing  this morning – the cool weather – Flashdance  being on time – or Upchuck being back at a workout?  TYA and Labrat seem to think it’s Upchuck being back cause they both thought that dude quit … Welcome back Upchuck… Hey Flash – keep it up man (see it’s better when your on time ) weather man we love you keep it coming baby!

The morning was spent in the Theatre – YHC felt the pax needed some culture 🙂 ….. Little mumble chatter during the warm up – something about Saab being real careful during the windmills 🙂 take it easy Saabski .. As the pax was beginning the dips ladder Labrat noticed some lights on in a car – he thought it was Hardywood’s ride so word made it’s way to the other side of the theatre to Hardywood – who somehow got over to check it out while we were all on the same set/step (dude is fast) good news is it was not his car – nor was it Conspiracy’s, Saab’s, Flashdance’s, or anyone else’s – must have been someone from the running group – (bummer) looks like they will be running home….

The Dora took longer than expected – YHC had at least two more fun things planned that we could not squeeze in today – oh well – next time fella’s.. Not much running this morning since there is a WED HILL run tonight ! But we got some good arm/shoulder and Ab work in – well done dudes..  Thanks for letting me take the lead this morning – it’s always a pleasure !

Announcements : BRR 1 week away baby ! – Wed Hill run / meeting tonight 5:30 -RUN/ Beers/ Water/Food/Fellowship – if your not doing the BRR you are still welcome to join in – so come on out – @ TYA’s  house ..

Reese Strong – Crab picking – please respond the the 2nd Preblast Circle K posted – we need head counts so we can order the crabs/ oysters / beers etc…. So please sign up – all are welcome. Please sign up for the run too – do the 5k the hard way – a regular 5k – the 2.0 run whatever – just do it – and support a great cause !

Convergence : Sept 30th – out at Gridiron 6-8 come on out and celebrate 3 years of F3 in RVA!

See Conspiracy if you are interested in joining a group from his church heading down to Houston on a recovery mission – and please keep those folks in your thoughts and prayers at this time.

1 more day in the 100 mile monthly challenge – go get it boys !

    See y’all in the gloom..

  • The Power of 3

18 men left the fartsack to better themselves in the gloom and this is what transpired:

Mosey to far end of the Carillon field.  Line up facing the Carillon for Invisible Jumpropes x 10 IC.

Minibeast in the middle of the COP.  Run the length of the field stopping at the 25, 50, 75 yd line to perform three of the called exercise.  First exercise – merkins.  Plank when done in the same line we started.

COP exercise DQ x 10 IC

Second leg of mini beast exercise LBCs x 3.  Plank when done in the same line.

    Copperhead squats x 10 IC.

Third leg of mini beast exercise Burpees x 3. Plank when done.

Mosey to front of Carillon.  Partner up.  Both partners perform 50 WWII situps.  Run to bottom of steps for wheelbarrow up steps.  Lunge across top and run back to start.  Repeato x 3.

Mosey to Rusty Cage.  5 hanging leg lifts, 5 pullups, 5 jerkins=1 round.  Complete 3 rounds.

Mosey to hill behind amphitheater for Jacobs Ladder.  Run to other side of hill and complete 1 flutterkick, 1 Freddie Mercury, 1 heels to heaven.  Run to other side of hill and increase reps of each exercise to 2.  Repeato up ladder to 7.

Mosey back to VSF for 2 MOM.  Exercises included APD, American Hammers, LBCs.

Numberama, Namearama, YHC took us out with a prayer.

Announcements – Wed. hill run this week will meet at the Pump House Parking lot for a run on riverside drive.

Moleskin-  YHCs favorite number is 3.  So the PAX completed the 3 COP exercises, 3 Mini beast exercises, 3 times around the Carillon, 3 sets on the Rusty Cage, 3 exercises in the Jacobs Ladder.  You would not think that incorporating the number 3 in a beatdown would produce such a smokefest.  The PAX crushed this smokefest this morning.  Oyster started the morning off by notifying YHC that he was ten seconds late getting started.  To keep him honest, YHC made sure we went ten seconds long this morning.

Sorry for the short BB, but YHC has a full day.

    MOLESKIN

YHC arrived just past 0500 to find the AO was only partially secured.  There was someone sleeping in a car and a big Family Dollar truck blocking the road.  YHC assumes Swirly told the driver to post or get the hell off the AO by 0530.  As the PAX was ready to depart the SF, the truck was gone.  TYA requested a route this morning that included the little blue stations along the way.  YHC can’t confirm if TYA had to stop.  Mumblechatter was plentiful this AM, but the only thing that sticks out to YHC was someone talking about toenails that look like pickles.  The PAX was complementary of YHC’s Smurf Jacks.  YHC appreciates, but Opus is the king and one true Smurf.  Nice to have Clavin back suffering through the humidity and a pleasure to meet Dexter and Wojo for the first time.  In the Lab Rat tradition, YHC apologizes to Saab for the many knee bending exercises.  Despite no stops at Bleeder’s pool, the PAX was drenched by the end, hopefully a good sign.  Thanks for allowing YHC to lead.

    NMS

SOJ takeover week continued this AM on a beautiful August morning at WDog.  The weather was clear and a brisk 63 degrees, quite the contrast from yesterday at No Toll.  As such, YHC felt the need to spread the PAX far and wide to see as much of this great AO as possible.  Upon 5:30 a PAX of 11 took off toward the Carillon to get the party started.  On the way, a figure appeared out of the dark asking questions about F3, so we asked him to join the fun as his car was parked right next to where we were going to start.  After a quick disclaimer and a fair amount of chide and mumble chatter the COP got started.  Hillbillies were welcomed as a staple for SOJ takeover week.  A lot of hopping and giggling ensued during this part of the workout.

The burp around the clock was something that YHC had tried initially on a business trip to Chicago with Lockjaw last year.  It was originally performed around a rather reasonably sized sun dial.  Performing this around the circle to the east of the Carillon was a bit more of a chore.  Bleeder had no trouble leading through this exercise with his abnormal superhuman bear crawling skills, the rest of the PAX were fairly taxed as they pushed through with a strong effort.  Dr. Phil mentioned that in Greensboro we call this something that looks good on paper.  YHCs response to that was the original plan called for a reversal of time by crawl bearing back around the circle and performing donkey kicks at each interval, but an audible was needed.

The mosey to the amphitheater was fairly quiet with little fanfare and mumblechatter with the exception of inquiring of the FNG (Valet) of his connection to F3RVA (friend of Splinter who was MIA).  Once the PAX was in the amphitheater, Lab Rat requested Swirly to provide a vocal performance, upon which Swirly reminded everyone of the Queen medley he performed upon doing Freddie Mercuries at DogPile recently.  Much to the dismay of the PAX an encore performance was not provided this AM.

The Rusty Cage was a bit murky and dark this AM, but around 6AM there was enough light to get the PAX safely there and perform the 6 Pack.  Circle K was disappointed as this exercise was explained as there was no evidence of col beer included.  The PAX effectively crushed the pull ups though and completed in enough time to get in some more burpees and finish strong with American Hammers.

YHC had never Qd before at WDog and YHC thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to utilize a lot of the great amenities at this AO and have a lot of fun with the great men and 2.0s of F3Rva.  It was a pleasure and privilege to take the lead this AM.  I am honored and humbled to the PAX for indulging my leadership and other antics this AM.  Thanks for letting YHC lead.

Welcome to Valet.  You crushed it this AM and YHC looks forward to seeing you again soon SOJ.

The Story: YHC arrived to the AO with the temperature gauge reading 70 and thought man we have had some great weather for workouts these last few days… YHC was glad to see some folks roll in this morning. We had a small crowd for WDOG but that did not deter us from showing the rather large Seal Team group what we are made of. Nope Nope Nope – there was no fight or competition (unfortunately) but Oyster was ready – atta baby Oyster – points for your file buddy.. Oyster was leading the way on a Indian Run Mossy and the Seal team was coming right for us – instead of moving Oyster stayed strong lowered his stance and plowed right through them – YHC had flash backs of his coaches screaming follow your block Hardy!!! YHC lowered his shoulders and center of gravity grabbed the back of Oysters shirt  and split that whole through the Seal defense – freaken awesome….

Bootleg gets the lion heart award for the day – that dude was pushing – giving it everything he had this morning – very well done dude! Sippy Cup is back – just in case you all were wondering – dude is a beast! Flipper crushed today’s upper body beatdown as one would expect – atta baby Flipdog!

Don’t know if any of you have ever partnered up with TYA during a partner leg toss but holy sh%5$3t!!! That dude will take your legs/feet whatever the hell he can grab or push and freaken destroy you – it brings partner leg toss which is a good ab workout to a whole new level… Well done TYA – my abs are aching..

Shout out to Depends and Dexter – way to bring it today guys – keep up the good work.

Announcements : Wed Hill run tonight 5:30, OBT in town tomorrow night 6PM The Veil, Lot’s of stuff happening in Sept- BRR, Reese Strong, Crab Picking, Convergence. 100 miles is the challenge in August – sign up and go get it !

Flipper took us out with some thoughtful and encouraging words !

A pleasure to lead this morning guys – See y’all in the gloom…

  • Power Tools not Raccoons

16 stalwarts and 1 FNG arrived at WDog for a beatdown YHC was hoping was as good as Flipper’s greatest beatdown ever or at least as good as the tribute.  Swirly described some strange animal noises coming from near the amphitheater and suggested we stay away from there, noted.

Mosey to the traffic circle for some SSH, DQ, Arm Circles, Copperhead Merkins, LBC

Mosey to the Rusty Cage – 3 dead hang pull-ups (arms fully extended) run to fire hydrant for 10 Bobby Hurleys  Repeato x 5

Partner up and grab 1 Sandbag per group.  Mosey back to the fire hydrant for a brief Lazy Dora.  P1 does 10 squats with sandbag, P2 Al Gore, switch up to 60 total, P1 10 Overhead press P2 plank up to 60 total, P1 WWII w/ sandbag P2 hold 6”  Plankarama waiting for those that needed to retie their bag.  Catch me if you can back to the sandbag pile – P1 run with sandbag P2 3 burpees and run to catch up.

Mosey to the Carillon for an abbreviated “Assault on the Carillon” 5 burpees, run to up the stairs 10 derkins, 10 donkey kicks repeato until Q calls time

Mosey back, past the circle where there was a nice ring of cones another workout group had left, to a spot of some well manicured grass that could have been used for a putting contest but for us Mary.  Start with the YHC favorite Crunchy Frog, then 1-leg Alabama Prom Dates, Freddie Mercuries, and American Hammers.

Back to the flag where YHC took us out.

    NMM

Welcome FNG Rounders, named before we were able to hear much about who he is or where he is from.  Hopefully you’ll be back soon.  Great to see Depends back out too in his 5 week work trip to Richmond.

Swirly and TYA heard some strange noises when they arrived early to secure the AO.  Thinking it may have been someone trapping or torturing a raccoon or other animal they advised keeping our distance.  As we approached the circle and amphitheater we realized it was only someone setting up the stage.  Maybe TYA needs to spend more time on his job sites to familiarize himself with the sound of power tools.

The dead hang pullups and Bobby Hurleys are YHC’s subtle way of attempting to get the PAX to work on form, preparing for Toga’s absence.  Extend those arms and get that squat low to touch the ground.  Also, it’s never to early to work on the jumper to prepare for a March Madness Q.  Glad to have Gumbo back in the mix working out all the gumbo and beignets consumed on his round trip to Louisiana.  While the sandbags are there and intact we might as well use them, thanks Lockjaw.  As Viral can attest, just make sure they are tied up well first.

As I said in the COT, I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this group.  A little like the quote “you don’t know what  you’ve got until it’s gone”  with F3 you don’t know what you were missing until you have it.  F3 has helped push me to be better physically, mentally, emotionally and as a leader and for that I am thankful.

If you are a podcast listener, which many of you are now, I suggest you check out Art of Manliness.  They just released a podcast with OBT and Dredd on F3.  YHC has not been able to listen to it yet but I expect it will reinforce what we already know and reinvigorate everyone to give away this gift we have been given.

    Everything is coming up Rosie.

    Announcements:

  • When a triple check goes bad

18 strong, with 1 FNG and one relocated pax, came out to WDOG on a relatively cooler morning. Here is what went down:

COP – SSH, Merkins, Heels to heaven, Don Qs (or ridiculously slow Don Qs if you’re Viral), Russian Soldiers.

Partner up for Shoulder Presses:  20 Shoulder Presses then Wheelbarrow to center of circle, switch and Repeato.

Mosey down to bottom of Rugby for Triple Check to break in newly laid asphalt. Run, WWII situps, and Carolina Dry Docks.

Run down PumpHouse, stopping for 5 burpees each light until bottom of Love Hill. Head up Love Hill alternating Bear Crawl, Crab Walk, and run. Gather up at top for 25 Merkins then head back to flag. 3 min of Mary then 20 Merkins.

NMS- Things are as they should be- YHC saw Sippy Cup running to the AO in the Gloom. After the COP the Shoulder Press sets to start were not pretty. YHC admits his explanation was poorly done, YHC went to demo a shoulder press and instead we just got started. The PAX did figure it out eventually, except for BT & Viral. YHC had no idea what you 2 were doing but whatever it was, it is not legal in at least 15 states.

After that failure of YHC, it was followed up with another by calling for maybe the longest triple check ever. All were pleased when the audible to 2 rounds was called. Lots of good mumblechatter though from the PAX while on the ground waiting for the runners to return. Apparently WoJo had never done CDDs, which is ironic given his name. Plus we got to introduce WoJo to Bobo along the way down PumpHouse.

The crab/Duck/run combo up the hill was a blast and afterwards Flipper’s mind was racing with ideas about taking on Love Hill without running at all. Pax you’ve been warned.

Glad to have Circle K in the pax and get to pray with him in the COT. YHC will be at the visitation tonight and I know many pax will as well. TAP brother. Also Welcome Dexter!

    Silent Assassin signing off.
